On this episode I am joined by Dr. Sam Cunningham, President of the Texas Bighorn Society (www.texasbighornsociety.org) at the 2023 Hunt Fish Podcast Summit held at the Warren Ranch. The history of the bighorn sheep in the Lone Star state has been a rocky one with the species being completely extirpated by the early 1960s. But with help from groups like TBS, state wildlife biologists from Texas and other states and other conservation groups like the Wild Sheep Foundation, the Bighorns are being reintroduced here in Texas and are making a great comeback! Although there are still a lot of hurdles left to overcome with disease, private land fencing, invasive species such as Audad and even human destruction of water guzzlers, the sheep are surviving and increasing in numbers. Sam and I had a great discussion on this and how you can get involved and help with their mission. Be sure to check them out online at their website and on social media. They have some great opportunities to get boots on the ground and improve habitat and more, along with numerous ways to contribute to the cause.
