S34E18 - WSSA Presentation: COVID-19, Employee Perspectives, and the Shifting Nature of Work

In this HCI Podcast episode, Dr. Jonathan H. Westover (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonathanhwestover/) shares his presentation and Q&A from the World Social Science Association Conference, titled: "COVID-19, Employee Perspectives, and the Shifting Nature of Work." See the video here: ???. Presentation Abstract: "The purpose of this research is to understand employee perspectives on their work characteristics and conditions, particularly related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the future of work. Working conditions impact job satisfaction, which has been defined as “a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the appraisal of one’s job or job experiences” (Locke, 1975, p. 1304). People tend to measure job satisfaction by comparing aspects of the job they have with those they want (Locke, 1976). Job satisfaction is related to the value that one places on specific aspects of a job, such as autonomy, pay and benefits, challenge, growth, or meaningful work, and the degree to which such elements are present. The value one places on these various job characteristics may differ based on gender, age, personality, occupation, context, or other factors. This study examines various job characteristics and working conditions with an emphasis on COVID-19 to determine how managers and leaders can better support and develop their employees. "This presentation will summarize a series of studies comparing job satisfaction and its determinants across 37 countries, based on data from the most recent wave of the International Social Survey Program. This research explores various work-life balance factors, job autonomy, and meaningful work indicators and the related considerations for managers as they work to design work (including remote work) during the COVID-19 pandemic. "Well-designed jobs, that provide meaning and purpose to employees, the autonomy to determine how they perform their work, and that provide for various work-life-balance benefits are proven to drive higher levels of worker satisfaction and engagement, which has enormous benefits for both workers and their employers alike. These benefits include increased productivity, innovation and creativity, and less job turnover and absenteeism." Please leave a review wherever you listen to your podcasts! He was also completely unaware of the full impact that stress would eventually have on his physical, mental, energetic, and emotional wellbeing. A lack of awareness of the impact of high stored stress loads kept him from ever manifesting his dream. Please leave a review wherever you listen to your podcasts!
