S1 Ep 955SUFB 955: Using Collaborative Efforts To Conserve Fisheries

Marine Conservation is all about collaboration because collaboration leads to results. This episode presents a recent case where adaptive management, collaboration among government, research institutes, and citizen science groups show great results for a Nassau Grouper aggregation in Little Cayman. Find out how an aggregation site for Grouper spawning tripled in size within 10 years. Link To Article: https://scripps.ucsd.edu/news/collaborative-conservation-approach-endangered-reef-fish-yields-dramatic-results Do you think this solution could be applied to other aggregations sites around the Caribbean Sea? S1 Ep 953SUFB 953: Scottish Coalition Calls For Trawling Ban Within 3 Miles Off Coast

Our Seas Coalition has called for Scotland to ban trawling within 3 miles of the coast to ensure the sustainability of fisheries for the future. The Coalition is made up of various stakeholders including marine ecotourism firms, fishing communities, salmon conservationists and others. There are other fishing groups that oppose the ban as they feel the current system of voluntary closures and other measures will suffice. S1 Ep 952SUFB 952: Changing The Way We Label Foods And Make Them To Save The Environment

Climate Change is destroying our planet and altering our Oceans. There is no doubt about it. We need to change the way we live and we need leadership from governments and corporations to help us change. One company is leading the charge to help us change the way we choose our food by providing carbon footprint labels on their products so you can see the impact your food has on the environment. Quorn is a company that makes meat alternative foods and wants to help its consumers make better choices in the food they choose to eat to protect the environment. Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jan/09/quorn-to-be-first-major-brand-to-introduce-carbon-labelling In keeping with the food theme for today's episode, I read another article on how one company is creating food in a lab from bacteria and water to offer a FarmFree experience. Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/08/lab-grown-food-destroy-farming-save-planet Will these changes radicalize the food industry and save the planet? S1 Ep 951SUFB 951: Episode 1 - Marine Pollution With Dr. Judith Weis

I'm taking you back to my first episode on the Speak Up For The Ocean Blue Podcast because we are less than 50 episodes away from hitting 1000 episodes. In my first episode, I spoke to Dr. Judith Weis about her new book (at the time) entitled "Marine Pollution." It's a great book that breaks down marine pollution sources and effects on the environment in a digestible manner. Podcasters say that your first episode is your worst episode. Do you think the same? S1 Ep 949SUFB 949: Australian Fire Origins And How The Fires Are Affected By The Ocean

The Ocean influences the climate and when the Ocean changes in temperature, then the climate changes. Unfortunately, climate change is making the Australian wildfires worse to the point where the entire country seems to be on fire...and it's only going to get worse over the weekend. Listen to the podcast to find out how the Ocean is inducing the wildfires and what needs to happen to stop the extreme fires from happening again. S1 Ep 944SUFB 944: Australian Heat Wave Is Causing Mass Fish Kills In Western Australia

Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites. Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early. Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action. I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future. S1 Ep 941SUFB 941: Science Communication Should Be Proactive Rather Than Reactive

Often times, science communicators are trying to undo the damage caused by a documentary or a certain President that spews utter garbage that is wrong on a specific environmental subject. S1 Ep 937SUFB 937: We Need You To Speak Up For The Ocean Blue

I had a thought about science communication the other day. I noticed that it's always the same people that speak up for conservation. The people who speak up are great, but it's always the same people. I feel as though we need new people to start speaking out. Great Thunberg is relatively new to the game and she has done a great job in speaking up for doing something about Climate Change. In January 2020, I will focus more on helping people to Speak Up For The Ocean Blue. This includes teaching an online course for Duke University on podcasting for environmental science. If you or the organization you are working for are interested, then sign up here: http://www.speakupforblue.com/duke. Are you ready to Speak Up For The Ocean Blue? S1 Ep 936SUFB 936: Indonesia May Not Blow Up Illegal Fishing Boats Anymore

Indonesia is known for its beautiful beaches and clear ocean waters that are visited by millions of people every year. They are also known for blowing up boats who fish illegally in their waters, or so they used to be...maybe...we aren't sure yet. A new Fisheries Minister is contemplating the rule of blowing up boats is they are caught fishing illegally and replace it with boat seizures that are either auctioned off or given to local fishers. Some environmental groups are worried that the latter won't be much of a deterrent for illegal fishing. What say you? S1 Ep 935SUFB 935: Mako Sharks Not Fully Protected From Fisheries

I had the wonderful opportunity to create a podcast segment for my friend and fellow podcaster, Clay Groves who hosts the Fish Nerd Podcast. It is a podcast for Recreational Fishers to share fishing stories, have some fun, and discuss conservation. Clay took part in National Podcast Posting Month (NaPodPoMo), where he posted a podcast episode every day during the month of November. Clay asked me to submit a segment for his podcast. I recorded and submitted an episode of a recent article written by David Shiffman (https://earther.gizmodo.com/it-s-pathetic-world-fails-to-protect-one-of-the-most-e-1840056618?fbclid=IwAR2ofmNDQnPQtnpCsqiXOtwQOKXnTnIdxlqW5PKt-LYLhfyweXBylRIGMQ8) on the rejection of advice from scientists to protect mako sharks during fisheries such as tuna. Today's episode is that segment. I wanted to share it with you as I thought it was important. S1 Ep 934SUFB 934: Overcoming Barriers To Science Communication

We had a slight problem that we never encountered here on the Speak Up For Blue Team: We were asked to take down an episode because our guest's boss was worried that the information that was discussed briefly on an episode was going to affect the future funding from a grantor. We didn't agree with the boss, but we didn't want our guests to be put in a more difficult position than they were already in. The Speak Up For Blue Team (with 7 podcasts) has communicated a lot of science, but we encounter barriers from time to time. In this episode, I give you some ways to overcome those barriers and give reasons why there shouldn't be any barriers at all. Do you encounter barriers to Science Communication often? S1 Ep 931SUFB 931: Ocean Plastic Clean Up Is Happening, But We need To Focus On Education

Educating the public on how to change their behaviour from using single-use plastics to using more sustainable alternatives is the key to reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in the Ocean. We keep seeing articles about people trying to clean up the Oceans. There are even companies that are built off of this premise; however, cleaning the Ocean is our last ditch effort and does not mean the Oceans will ever be clean from plastic. We need to stop plastics from getting into the Ocean by refusing single-use plastic. The best way to do this is to focus on educating the public and change their behaviour. S1 Ep 926SUFB 926: Seagrass Protection And Restoration Required To Mitigate Climate Change

You may have seen a plethora of articles and political announcements on tree planting to mitigate (reduce) climate change by absorbing more Carbon Dioxide. As news broke about the destruction of the Amazon Rainforest a few months ago, scientists reiterated the need for trees to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2), a Greenhouse Gas (GHG) that contributes to Climate Change. However, trees aren't the only plants that absorb CO2. Seagrasses may even be a better plant type to absorb the GHG. In this episode, I discuss the benefit of protecting Seagrass habitats and how countries should consider restoring these useful habitats to help attain the goals set out in the Paris Climate Change Agreement. Link to article: https://www.unenvironment.org/news-and-stories/story/seagrass-secret-weapon-fight-against-global-heating?fbclid=IwAR1_cqwRzYiyCk-KYKAn3I4r20NZeSR-wEMrrsgy4WAbCBhfHvNxyQPWVQY Do you think more countries should implement the protection and restoration of Seagrass habitats? S1 Ep 920SUFB 920: MPA In Antarctica Rejected For 8th Straight Year

Members of the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) met to discuss a number of marine topics for managing the Antarctic. Unfortunately, a Marine Protected Area that would protect 1 million square kilometres of the East Antarctic was not agreed upon because some member nations did not agree with the lack of a research monitoring plan (which is normally implemented after the designation of an MPA). There are a number of countries that have either banned or plan to ban single-use plastics as their citizens are demanding that we stop adding plastic pollution to the Ocean. Consumers are also demanding that manufacturers create more options for less waste of their products such as refill stations; however, some manufacturers are not quite sure if their consumers are ready for refill stations based on attempts in the past. S1 Ep 907SUFB 907: Does Doing What You Love Require A Marine Conservation Career

As I reach my mid-career point, I often reflect on how my career has impacted the Marine Conservation community. Did I help solve some problems for people? Did I provide the resources that I thought were important for people to succeed in Marine Conservation? These are the questions that I probably should have asked myself 20 .years ago when I was starting my career. I don't have regrets in my career as everything I did lead me to a point in my career where I feel that I am having an impact on Marine Conservation; however, I am not getting paid a career-type wage to do Marine Conservation podcasting and I don't feel guilty about it. You know that guilt. It's the guilty feeling that you get when you think of working in a job/career that might be able to make you money to pay the bills, but it's not in Marine Conservation. The guilt you feel when you think of doing anything but science, the subject that you paid a ton of money to learn for 4, 6, 10 years (and still paying off!). It's the same guilt I felt when I considered leaving the paid career of Marine Conservation to podcast for Marine Conservation and impact more lives than I ever could think about doing in my full-time job. Letting go of the guilt made me happy! Take a listen to the episode for more details on how to let go of that guilt.
