S1 Ep 982SUFB 982: Climate Change Is Causing Species Pull Towards The Poles
A review study looked at 540 studies that involved marine species populations with respect to warming. Species near the poles are becoming more abundant compared to species near the equator. S1 Ep 981SUFB 981: The Lonely Conservationists
Trying to attain a career in Marine Conservation or Conservation, in general, is very difficult. There aren't many jobs available and there is little funding. There are many people struggling, but the struggle can be lonely as the business is very isolated with fieldwork in remote areas for long periods of time. One young conservationist had enough and decided to let her feelings out. What happened next was inspirational and gave birth to the website: https://lonelyconservationists.com/ Link to article: https://news.mongabay.com/2020/03/overworked-underpaid-and-lonely-conservationists-find-a-new-community-online/ Turn On The Light Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/turn-on-the-light/id1498940763 Tell us about your career struggles in the Speak Up For Blue Facebook Group: http://www.speakupforblue.com/group. S1 Ep 980SUFB 980: Chile MPA Home To A Large Increase In Humpback Whales
A great Mongabay article describes a 5-fold increase of Humpback Whales in less than two decades in a Multi-Use Protected Area in Chile called the Francisco Coloane Multi-Use Marine And Coastal Protected Area. In 2003, 40 Humpback whales were observed in the MPA compared to 190 individuals in 2017. The same study revealed a feeding area for the Humpback Whales was in a 15 square km area that was closed to fishing. A huge success. S1 Ep 979SUFB 979: Preparing For Interviews For A Career In Marine Conservation
The last segment in the Marine Conservation Career series covers the topic of Interviews. I LOVE doing interviews. Connecting to people is my jam! S1 Ep 978SUFB 978: To Cull Or Not To Cull? That Is The Question.
At some point in your Marine Conservation Career, you will face the question of whether one species is worth more than the other. Science alone will not be able to answer the question. A team of interdisciplinary scientists may be able to answer the question; however, the results may not agree with the moral stance from the public. The article that I cover today explores this idea using grey seals and cod on the Atlantic coast as an example. Link To Article: http://theconversation.com/what-lives-what-dies-the-role-of-science-in-the-decision-to-cull-seals-to-save-cod-131298 Do you think grey seals should be culled to help the cod population? S1 Ep 977SUFB 977: Self-Quarantined? You Can Still Live For The Ocean
We are living in unprecedented times, where the Coronavirus has taken over our lives to the point where many of us are living in self-quarantine and practicing social distancing. People are buying up tons of toiler paper and disinfectant wipes to ensure they do not catch or spread the virus. Others are hoarding all sorts of products. The amount of purchasing can lead to the wasteful use of some products so I wanted to create this episode to ensure we are still living for a better Ocean by thinking sustainably with our wallets during these uncertain times. S1 Ep 975SUFB 975: Which Pacific Salmon Species Will Adapt Well To Climate Change?
Pacific Salmon species love cool, clean waters and they are able to enjoy those waters all throughout British Columbia, Canada. Glacial retreating due to warmer air temperatures has revealed many suitable habitats for Pacific Salmon species; however, those glaciers are getting smaller and some have stopped revealing suitable habitat. It's all due to Climate Change that increased the speed of melting. Less habitat is a bit of a concern to researchers. Some Pacific Salmon species will not do as well in warmer conditions. Listen to the episode to find out which species will do well and which ones won't. S1 Ep 973SUFB 973: How To Write A Proper Cover Letter For Marine Conservation Jobs
The times of a single-page cover letter are over. In Marine Conservation, your cover letter needs to include specific information that will help the person reviewing your application to decide whether you warrant a closer look (i.e. an interview). I give you tips on how to write a cover letter that will get you closer to getting the interview. It worked for me. Once I started using this strategy, I was able to get more interviews on applications that I submitted. Do you use the same strategy when writing your cover letter? S1 Ep 972SUFB 972: Throwback To Episode 8 - Climate Change And The Ocean
Do you remember when the Senator brought the snowball onto the Senate floor to demonstrate that Climate Change was not real? I sure do. You will find out my thoughts about the event on this Throwback episode to episode 8, my first solo/non-interview episode. It was a time where President Obama declared Climate Change as the biggest threat to the United States. That claim was backed up by the Navy, NASA and other scientific associations. However, Republican politicians were fighting any claim that Climate Change was real...and nothing has changed except that the Republicans are now in charge. S1 Ep 971SUFB 971: Protecting The Safety Of Women Within Academia With Chelsea Gray
This episode may be the most powerful episode that we have ever published on Speak Up For The Ocean Blue podcast. It's all because of my guest today, Chelsea Gray, a PhD student who studies basking sharks. Unfortunately, we are not discussing Chelsea's PhD today as Chelsea will be telling us about something that happened to her a couple of years ago that was terrible. She will also be telling us what happened after as she tried to seek justice. You have to listen to this story to believe it. Do you think your school will protect your fellow graduate students? S1 Ep 970SUFB 970: How To Know You Qualify For The Right Job
It's quite frustrating when you spend so much time applying for a job and then hear nothing back as to whether you go an interview or your application was even close. I was able to find success in applying for jobs where I received interviews. There was a point in time where I was getting a lot of interviews. IT was all in how I applied for the job. S1 Ep 969SUFB 969: Throwback To Interview With NY Sea Grant
The Sea Grant program has always been an important program for citizens that live within a Sea Grant state. The program conducts programs that are focused on finding solutions for state problems. In this throwback episode, Bill Wyse and I discussed the programs related to the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy. Also, there is a clip of my oldest daughter, who was 7 at the time, telling me about her favourite animal...that choked me up a bit. Do you know what your Sea Grant program does? S1 Ep 968SUFB 968: Saving Indonesia From Plastic Pollution
Indonesia has the second-largest amount of pollution entering the ocean and its citizens are tired of it. They want the government to implement better waster management systems. The movement for a better system is driven by the youth of Indonesia, which has worked with the government to recently ban plastic bags, styrofoam, and plastic straws in July 2019. More needs to be done though. Listen to the episode for more information. S1 Ep 967SUFB 967: Figuring Out Your Marine Conservation Career Path - Update
It took me a while to figure out my Marine Conservation Career Path. 18 years to be exact. I experimented quite a bit with jobs in different sectors, but I never really found the job that equalled my passion for Marine Conservation. Full disclosure, my path was restricted to being a Marine Biologist living in Ontario, which required me to be creative. That creativity spawned this very podcast and fulfilled my passion and path for my Marine Conservation Career. There are many of you in the audience who are following in my footsteps. You are not looking to follow your career path in Marine Conservation because all you are doing is searching for ANYTHING in Marine Conservation. It's the same way I started my career. It's time we change that. I talk about setting your career path to ensure that you know exactly which jobs you need to fulfill your passion. S1 Ep 965SUFB 965: SeaWorld Pays $65 Million In Settlement Due To Blackfish Movie
SeaWorld has been through a lot since the release of a documentary that exposed the truth behind marine mammal captivity. Blackfish was released in 2013 and caused SeaWorld to change its business practices surrounding Orcas; however, they were sued for allegedly downplaying the effect of Blackfish on their reporting to investors. They had to pay quite a bit of money but potentially got off without admitting to being guilty. Now, Seaworld is starting to earn money again after promoting free beer in Orlando and rides in California. They still have Orcas but they don't do shows nor do they profit off of the Orca reproduction business because it is now illegal. No Orca shows confirm that the best way to see Orcas is in the wild with a reputable Whale Watching outfit. S1 Ep 962SUFB 962: Turks And Caicos Losing Their Conch To Over-Fishing
The Turks And Caicos are overfishing their conchs and tourists are worried that they can't get their conch for dinner anymore. That was a bit sarcastic. Unfortunately, the demand for conchs outside of the beautiful Islands of the Turks and Caicos is driving the population to extinction and people are calling for an All-Out Ban on fishing for the once plentiful mollusc. I am very happy to present to you Alex Tilley, who I interviewed in episode 4 about his organization called Talking Oceans. Much of our conversation covered the manner in which marine conservationists should approach helping local communities in foreign countries. We also discussed how Talking Oceans was approaching Science Communication. I was able to catch up with Alex at the International Marine Conservation Congress in Malaysia a couple of years ago, where we chatted about his new endeavors and being a father living in East Bangor. S1 Ep 959SUFB 959: Sea-Level Rise Will Reshape The US Coastline And Increase Migration Inland
We know that Sea-Level Rise will reshape the world's coastlines physically, but it is rare that we see studies that predict how local communities will be reshaped from a socio-economic perspective. A recent study out of the University of Southern California did examine how inland counties and cities could be impacted by coastal migrants moving away from their flooded homes. S1 Ep 956SUFB 956: Coral Fish Attracted To Healthy Coral Reef Sound
What type of music do coral fish like? Well, a group of researchers from the University of Exeter found out recently. The researchers probably didn't play Stairway To Heaven to attract young juvenile fish to coral reefs; however, they did play the sounds of healthy reefs to attract young, vibrant fish to unhealthy reefs in hopes that it would activate something within the reef to start its way back to good health. The noise worked because fish came to the reefs more than they did to reefs where no noise was played. Listen to the episode to find out why, and find out what noises constitute a healthy reef. S1 Ep 953SUFB 953: Scottish Coalition Calls For Trawling Ban Within 3 Miles Off Coast
Our Seas Coalition has called for Scotland to ban trawling within 3 miles of the coast to ensure the sustainability of fisheries for the future. The Coalition is made up of various stakeholders including marine ecotourism firms, fishing communities, salmon conservationists and others. There are other fishing groups that oppose the ban as they feel the current system of voluntary closures and other measures will suffice. S1 Ep 952SUFB 952: Changing The Way We Label Foods And Make Them To Save The Environment
Climate Change is destroying our planet and altering our Oceans. There is no doubt about it. We need to change the way we live and we need leadership from governments and corporations to help us change. One company is leading the charge to help us change the way we choose our food by providing carbon footprint labels on their products so you can see the impact your food has on the environment. Quorn is a company that makes meat alternative foods and wants to help its consumers make better choices in the food they choose to eat to protect the environment. Link to article: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jan/09/quorn-to-be-first-major-brand-to-introduce-carbon-labelling In keeping with the food theme for today's episode, I read another article on how one company is creating food in a lab from bacteria and water to offer a FarmFree experience. Originally, I was going to do an entrie episode on the State of the Ocean in 2019, but I was worried it would be too depressing. Therefore, I decided to add the outlook of the Oceans for 2020 in the same episode to inspire hope. Do you agree with my assessment of the Ocean in 2019 and my outlook for 2020? S1 Ep 945SUFB 945: Tips On How You Can Take Climate Action
I thought I would name some ways that you can take climate change action at home so that you know you are living for a better Ocean. In this episode, I talk about reducing/eliminating single-use plastic; buying second-hand clothes; and, buying inexpensive technology to reduce your home energy demand. Do you have more tips? S1 Ep 944SUFB 944: Australian Heat Wave Is Causing Mass Fish Kills In Western Australia
Australia is undergoing an unprecedented Heat Wave and it is causing mass fish kills along the Western Australian Coastline. Air Temperatures above 50C are occurring for over 5 days, which has never happened in this region since they started monitoring air temperature in 1993 via satellites. Higher temperatures do occur during the summer, but not until mid-summer in February. Higher temperatures in December worry researchers as they have never observed these temperatures this early. Higher temperatures and mass fish kills make you wonder why more governments are not taking more Climate Change action. I hope that protests such as the Climate Strikes will inspire more people who want action to reduce Green House Gases will run for office in the near future. S1 Ep 943SUFB 943: An Audience Message And A Comment
I love hearing from the audience on how the podcast has affected you in different ways and/or what you thought about the podcast/episode. I decided to talk about a message I received from a listen about how the podcast has affected her life. I love positive stories like this. I also discussed feedback from another listener on Monday's episode (episode 941), where I used eating lifestyles as an example for the point I was trying to make about Science Communication. The listener made some great points and I gave them my response. Let me know whether you agree with me or your fellow listener? S1 Ep 941SUFB 941: Science Communication Should Be Proactive Rather Than Reactive
Often times, science communicators are trying to undo the damage caused by a documentary or a certain President that spews utter garbage that is wrong on a specific environmental subject. Science communicators need to work at getting ahead of specific subject matters to ensure that the proper information backed by scientific evidence gets out to the public before other people manipulate the science in order to prove their point. S1 Ep 940SUFB 940: What Will Energy Look Like In The Future
I was listening to an episode of a podcast called Oppo (it's a Canadian political podcast that I listen to on a regular basis), where the main topic was on Nuclear Energy. S1 Ep 939SUFB 939: Ocean Conservancy And NFL Team Up To Protect The Oceans
Four NFL Athletes are using the program called "My Cleats, My Cause" Initiative to spread awareness of Ocean Issues by wearing custom-designed cleats to show their love for the Ocean. I LOVE this cause as the NFL is arguably the biggest sport in the US, North America, and maybe even the world (the Superbowl is the biggest sporting event in the world). S1 Ep 938SUFB 938: Declining Oxygen Levels In The Ocean Due To Climate Change
Research has shown that Oxygen levels are declining in the open ocean and along the coasts all across the world. This research does not paint a pretty picture for the future of our oceans as deoxygenation is going to negatively affect biological and biogeochemical ocean processes. S1 Ep 937SUFB 937: We Need You To Speak Up For The Ocean Blue
I had a thought about science communication the other day. I noticed that it's always the same people that speak up for conservation. The people who speak up are great, but it's always the same people. I feel as though we need new people to start speaking out. Great Thunberg is relatively new to the game and she has done a great job in speaking up for doing something about Climate Change. In January 2020, I will focus more on helping people to Speak Up For The Ocean Blue. This includes teaching an online course for Duke University on podcasting for environmental science. S1 Ep 936SUFB 936: Indonesia May Not Blow Up Illegal Fishing Boats Anymore
Indonesia is known for its beautiful beaches and clear ocean waters that are visited by millions of people every year. They are also known for blowing up boats who fish illegally in their waters, or so they used to be...maybe...we aren't sure yet. A new Fisheries Minister is contemplating the rule of blowing up boats is they are caught fishing illegally and replace it with boat seizures that are either auctioned off or given to local fishers. Some environmental groups are worried that the latter won't be much of a deterrent for illegal fishing. What say you? S1 Ep 935SUFB 935: Mako Sharks Not Fully Protected From Fisheries
I had the wonderful opportunity to create a podcast segment for my friend and fellow podcaster, Clay Groves who hosts the Fish Nerd Podcast. It is a podcast for Recreational Fishers to share fishing stories, have some fun, and discuss conservation. Clay took part in National Podcast Posting Month (NaPodPoMo), where he posted a podcast episode every day during the month of November. Clay asked me to submit a segment for his podcast. I recorded and submitted an episode of a recent article written by David Shiffman (https://earther.gizmodo.com/it-s-pathetic-world-fails-to-protect-one-of-the-most-e-1840056618?fbclid=IwAR2ofmNDQnPQtnpCsqiXOtwQOKXnTnIdxlqW5PKt-LYLhfyweXBylRIGMQ8) on the rejection of advice from scientists to protect mako sharks during fisheries such as tuna. S1 Ep 934SUFB 934: Overcoming Barriers To Science Communication
We had a slight problem that we never encountered here on the Speak Up For Blue Team: We were asked to take down an episode because our guest's boss was worried that the information that was discussed briefly on an episode was going to affect the future funding from a grantor. We didn't agree with the boss, but we didn't want our guests to be put in a more difficult position than they were already in. The Speak Up For Blue Team (with 7 podcasts) has communicated a lot of science, but we encounter barriers from time to time. In this episode, I give you some ways to overcome those barriers and give reasons why there shouldn't be any barriers at all. Do you encounter barriers to Science Communication often?
