S1 Ep 465 Marathons In 5 Days, Fasted
Alex McDonald is just an ordinary guy. He's not an elite athlete, he's not a doctor, he's just following the science. Alex has gone deep into the science behind ketogenic diets and has followed this way of life eating a low carb and now carnivore diet for more than a decade. He set out to prove the power of fat adaptation by completing a challenge no one has ever done before, running 5 marathons in 5 days, all completely fasted. Alex's final meal was on the eve of the first marathon and he didn't eat again till day 5 after the fifth marathon. He only drank water and consumed salt. He tracked every data point from calories used to his glucose levels, his ketones, he completed a full blood panel before and after as well as a full body scan before and after the challenge. This is hard data! Alex has proved that we have a huge amount of energy stored on our bodies in the form of body fat - around 100,000 calories, which is way more energy than you need for 5 marathons over 5 days. In this episode Dr. Chaffee and Simon chat with Rory Bland who describes himself as just a dude with food intolerances on a mission to heal his gut, nervous system and regenerate the soil. Rory is 33 and has had major health problems since he was 3 years old including asthma, grommets, constantly sick with glandular fever and bronchitis which led to long stints on antibiotics, severe acne, chronic fatigue and joint pain. Rory's own struggle plus the death of his father at a young age sent him on a health journey which began with vegetarianism and veganism. Rory even lived in a yoga retreat, shaved his head and wore all white for a while! On a vegetarian and vegan diet Rory's health only got worse. Rory was so desperate for a solution that when he discovered the carnivore diet he thought 'why not?' and decided to do 24 hours of carnivore "as a joke". To Rory's surprise, he felt really good. He extended it to 30 days and hasn't stopped since. Within 2-3 days Rory's joint pain was way down. Then his skin started to glow. At the 6 week mark he was full of energy and healthier than he'd ever been. Rory's career background is in social media and he's taken this knowledge and applied it to his own Instagram account which has grown to 158,000 followers in only 6 months. At 50 years old he is at the top of his game and pushing the boundaries of what mainstream science and endurance experts think is possible. In 2006, Sean founded a supplement company which advocated the usage of carbohydrates… In 2013, after losing his father to Oesophageal cancer, Sean started to "look out of the box" and see a correlation between the high carb, low fat diet and lifestyle diseases such as cancer and cardiac problems which plagued both sides of his family and most of the developed world. Going keto (and often strict carnivore), Sean stopped stuffing his pockets full of carbohydrate gels and kept riding his bike. His lifelong struggle with his bowel movements were resolved and his overall health improved. He has gone on to achieve incredible feats of endurance on his bike and is recording all his data proving that the mainstream dogma that you need carbohydrates for endurance is BS.
