Ep. 33: Some Crazy Stories From a Vet Tech; Meet Karen Scherrer, RVT
EKaren Scherrer has been a registered veterinary technician for 25 years this month. Ironically, she is officially retiring after spending the past 10+ years of focused effort for supposed major animal welfare organizations, as she has been consistently disappointed in the real-life scenarios that have played out behind the scenes. The most recent scenario was her experience helping to rescue a historic retrieval of 4000 beagles from a research breeding compound. She has worked in every aspect of veterinary medicine imaginable, from the now-closed Wildlife Way Station, feeding donuts to bears, tube feeding newborn squirrels, restraining caymans while doctors searched for a vein to high-kill shelters, zoos, small animal hospitals, equine rescue, mobile medicine and traveling to multiple separate catastrophic events. Within one year, Karen practiced along a spectrum from living in a tent following Hurricane Katrina, opening makeshift shelters at abandoned senior centers in Louisiana, and perishes she can not even pronounce. She also scrubbed in on neurosurgery cases and traveled to perform anesthesia in general practices as a mobile surgery technician with a board-certified surgeon. Hands down, her favorite area of practice has been the LA zoo. Karen is married to a board-certified small animal surgeon who she met while working as a mobile technician, and even behind the mask and cap, he still called her. They have a 15-year-old daughter, two angelic Golden Retrievers, and live in Carlsbad, CA. Topics covered in this episode: Working in mobile surgery as a veterinary technician Jaw-dropping malpractice stories from the road PTSD and trauma from the workplace Where have we gone wrong with veterinary culture? She is an advocate for animals, technicians, and change in the veterinary field as a whole. Her goal is to make others think outside the box and challenge old ways of thinking by trailblazing new ways of doing things in her life and her businesses. Being a Pet Consultant/strategist, she discusses a vast array of information; everything from routine care, surgical procedures, tech questions, and more. Bringing digital pet care courses is something new that she has introduced, to make care accessible even though many changes have occurred since the beginning of 2020. Ep. 25: LaBoit Clinic, Hospitalization On a Mobile Basis, and Corporate Practice; Meet Dr. Seely Rotigel
EDr. Seely Rotigel graduated from Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994 and is a small animal mobile vet. After graduating, she then worked at 2 "land clinics" for the next 8 years then decided it was time to do things her way and started the Visiting Vet Mobile Vet Clinic 20 years ago. She opted to go mobile (after fuming in her office, upset about some current clinic policies and flipping thru a vet magazine and seeing a Laboit ad) because it was an economical way to start a business and had a great client following. Seely lives in the SW Michigan area with her wife, 4 cats, 1 dog, 8 chickens, 19 pond fish, 2 horses, and 2 mini donkeys. If she wasn't allergic to animals, she would have more! Ep. 23: Mobile Vet Care In Arusha, Tanzania: From Rabid Lions, To Anthrax, To Fundraising, Humanitarianism, Welfare Education, Spiced Tea, Hot Chocolate, and Banana Wine; Meet Dr. Evarest Maguo With Elang'ata Agrovet
EDr. Evarest Maguo has been a veterinarian for over thirty years, and in 1997 he established his own veterinary practice and mobile clinic, along with his wife, Mrs. Evelyne. They are both experienced in agricultural services, environmental work, and the provision of veterinary care and animal welfare education. Evarest has been working as a vet since 1990 and holds a degree in Environmental Science and a Masters in Zoology. He is supported by his wife Evelyne, who has a certificate in agriculture and livestock and currently operates their agricultural and vet supply shop. They also have an on-site shelter that they use to house and treat a range of animals that require specific care. It is their end goal to re-home these animals to good homes. Their clinic and shelter are in Sekai, Arusha and they also offer a mobile clinic service in Arusha and nearby areas. Interview Answers: Ground nuts Yes, I was born in Dodoma, but I have been in Arusha for three-quarters of my life. I did my Veterinary training in Arusha as well. There are some other vets in Arusha, but they do not offer a mobile service. We are also very committed to improving animal welfare, whereas most vets in the area are not as passionate as us here at Elang'ata Agrovet. The tribe that I originate from in Dodoma is called the Go-go tribe and they are livestock keepers, and with my late brother also being a vet, I became very interested in animals from a young age. As I grew up, I entered a livestock/ agricultural secondary school to pursue my interest in animals. After school, I then went to vet college in Arusha, once I graduated, I was employed by the government in 1990 as an animal welfare inspector for several years. I then decided to retire, and start my own company in 1997, and so Elang'ata Agrovet was born! There are two areas to the vet, and mobile clinic and a stationary clinic. Mobile services are beneficial because I can take in my surroundings of the animal, and through this, I am able to gain a better understanding of why the animal may be ill or sick. Sometimes, it is obvious that people that take their animal to eh stationary vet sometimes do not tell the full truth, and so it is difficult to tell why the animal may be unwell. Participation by the whole family of a given client is important because I can educate more people, and more people become accountable for the animal's health at the same time. When funding opportunities are available, we also try to carry out vaccination clinics, outreach programmes, education programmes. What is it like being a vet in Tanzania – To be a vet here is challenging because sometimes you want to reach a lot of people, but you can be, and usually are incredibly restricted by the money made available. We get very little government funding which makes it difficult to provide a service. There is also very little awareness of animal welfare in Arusha and Tanzania, so even in the Police, for example, it is very difficult to regulate new animal welfare legislation. Sometimes I feel like I am the only one that knows! Again, some concepts of animal welfare are completely new to Tanzanians, re-homing for example – people are not educated in re-homing of animals and its benefits, so it makes it difficult to re-home dogs at the shelter. We treat a range of animals big and small! Day-to-day work usually includes chickens, donkeys, cows, cats and, dogs. I am prepared to answer a call for any animal! -We sometimes do joint vaccination programmes around the national parks here, including the Serengeti! We vaccinate animals around the national parks, which in turn decreases the transmission rate of diseases like rabies into safari animals. Everything! Surgeries such as neutering and spaying, amputation etc, vaccinations, diagnosis, pregnancies, artificial insemination and many more! Rehabilitation, continuous treatment, antibiotics etc. In Tanzania, we have a lack of even basic medical equipment that we need daily, not to mention the lack of state of art equipment. We have no x-ray or ultrasounds, which means we must diagnose every single case visually. There is also a lack of specific drugs for specific diseases. This means simple treatment, such as the use of antibiotics, is not as efficient and targeted as we would like. As mentioned, there is a lack of general funding and support from the government, which really is the cause of a lot of the issues we have here. There is also a lack of knowledge and education of animal welfare leading to a lack of care and poor animal welfare. This is where outreach and education funding can be so important. Country infrastructure can also make things difficult. There are some very difficult areas to access, and rising fuel costs certainly don't make things easy! Many locals also do not have the money to provide proper care for their animals, and I cannot afford to give out medical treatment for free, unfortunately. Question not quite understood – can you please elaborate? Y

Ep. 3: In Loving Memory of Dr. Steve Weinberg, Musician & House call Vet Legend of Los Angeles
In loving memory of Dr. Steve Weinberg 1959-2022 This special episode is meant to be a memorial in loving memory of Dr. Steve Weinberg. Steve was one of the original house call vets in Los Angeles. I did this interview with Steve in March of 2021. I'd been referring cases to his practice (911Vets, which then became PriVet Pet Care) for years and we'd become friends on Facebook, knowing that we were both musician vets. At the time, I was preparing content for the House Call Vet Academy, my online course. I decided to start a series of interviews for the course that turned out to be the pre-cursor to this podcast, and the inspiration. I interviewed many house call vets in different niches, to demonstrate for course participants all of the ways that we can do this work, and to show just how brilliant, innovative, and awesome the members of our community really are. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to connect with Steve face to face for the first time because of this interview and to have a live conversation. During that conversation (off the record, once the recording was finished) he told me that he had been diagnosed with neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer a few months prior, and that he did not know how much time he had left. Shortly after this conversation, we started to collaborate musically. I recorded on flute in a song he wrote called "Legacy" that was to come out on his next album. We had an awesome time recording and playing music together with the help of Steve's son, Zak, who is an incredibly talented professional music producer. After we had so much fun and realized we could create a lot more beautiful music together, we decided that we would collaborate again in creating the music for this podcast. The acoustic guitar music at the beginning and end of this podcast was composed, performed, and recorded by Steve while he was in and out of the hospital in the last few months of his life. I'm beyond grateful that he sent over the parts of the music he'd finished recording, and that his "musical DNA" will always be a part of this project. He called the song "Just Trying to Help," as the veterinarian's theme song for the House Call Vet Cafe podcast, in light of the suicide crisis in veterinary medicine. The plan was that he would layer on mandolin, hammered dulcimer, my playing on flute, house call veterinarian Jessica Fragola playing fiddle, and house call veterinarian Brandy Nunez on synthesizer … to weave recorded tracks of each of us into the music, one instrument at a time in each episode that we released until the music was complete. Steve was incredibly excited about this project, and we'd been talking about it every few days for months. He was super excited about being interviewed on the podcast as a regular guest, and he was planning to have his house call practice PriVet sponsor the project. He even named our nascent musical ensemble the "House Call Vet All Star Band." Steve wrote out a flute part for me to record just a few weeks before he passed away. He was in the hospital when he wrote it. It hasn't been recorded yet. I plan to honor his memory by having him as a guest on the podcast through this interview we recorded almost a year ago. I will continue to celebrate his life by completing this musical project we started together, no matter how long it takes. I feel very blessed and honored to have been able to capture this interview, some of Steve's wisdom, and his story. I'm so grateful to have had the chance to get to know him in the last year of his life, as not only a colleague but as a friend. He was a manifestation of vision, talent, humor, and true kindness. May his memory & his music be a blessing for all of us in our veterinary community & beyond.
