Son muchas las analogías entre el Cretense y el Manchego. Caballeros andantes a su manera, heterodoxos en todo, únicos e irrepetibles, emparentados por la familia de Jerónima de las Cuevas, y más que probablemente hermanos en el misterio. España y Oriente, Grecia y Bizancio, están presentes en ambos. Y asimismo, ambos hicieron de la locura, o de la extravagancia, un artificio para salvarse de un mundo chato y opresivo, abiertamente hostil.
