After a Summer break, Tripp and Bo catch up for 18 minutes - then they get down to business! "We Are All One": Human Rights Campaign Panel Discussion From the Wild Goose Festival

One of the highlights of Wild Goose Festival 2013 was a panel discussion organized by the Human Rights Campaign and hosted by Dr. Sharon Groves, the director of HRC's Religion and Faith Program. In Groves words, "2013 will go down in the history books as one of the most pivotal years for religious leaders working on justice issues. People of faith in unprecedented numbers were instrumental in bringing about the tremendous gains the LGBTQ community has enjoyed, culminating in the Supreme Court decision to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). People of faith also saw the gut-wrenching losses to sacred Civil Rights legislation, most particularly in the Supreme Court’s other decision to dismantle the Voting Rights Act, for which many have given their lives. The effects of these two decisions rest heavily on our collective conscience and forces us to recommit to Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin’s core organizing tenet that 'we are all one.'" Sub-titled "Southern Faith Leaders Re-framing the Work for Freedom and Justice," the panel included Caitlin Breedlove, co-director of Southerners On New Ground (SONG); Bishop Tonyia M. Rawls, founding pastor of Unity Fellowship Church in Charlotte, NC; and Rev. Dr. T. Anthony Spearman, Senior Pastor of the Clinton Tabernacle African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Hickory, NC. 10 Dirty Secrets About Being a Minister w/ Greg Horton

There are things only ministers know about being a minister. They aren't all pretty & they can even lead you to leave the church and possibly the faith. You get to hear 10 Dirty Secrets About Being a Minister with our guest and ex-pastor now a skeptic Greg Horton. Greg Horton was one of the inspirations behind starting the podcast. I have stalked him online for a long time and then we got to have some fun in person on my visit to Oklahoma. It was turned into this popular episode of the podcast. Way back when he had a podcast called 'the Parish' on the wired parish podcast network. Back then he was an emergent Christian and has since left the building. Throughout his journey I have loved following his blog, hearing about his undergrad religion and ethics students, and thinking through some of the serious criticisms he has leveled against the church. Plus he also does some wine reviews. In this Episode Greg and I discuss his top ten list of things about being a minister you just don't know or understand until you discover it on the ground. I had a great time talking with Greg and hope that where ever you are in your own relationship with the church, the faith, or ministry you appreciate Greg's openness. I did. TNT: a Homebrewed Stew of Topics

This edition of the Theology Nerd Throwdown is a smorgasbord of subjects - a cornucopia of concepts - a torrent of topics... you get the idea. First up is the 30 second definition blind challenge when Bo has to define 3 terms or concepts. This week's words are: anointing, perichoresis and glossolalia. Then we chat with Micky Jones about the concept of post-cynical christianity suggested by Jim Wallis. We take a little break for the High-Gravity broadcast and then pick up with the Bible & Tillich, Hegel, and Process. Our guest this week was Jonnie Russell who guest blogged last week. He was visiting for the High Gravity conversation. One production note: Bo forgot to bring the Mp3 call with Micky for Tripp to hear - so he is commenting blindly. THEN something went wonky with the sound and Bo's audio on the call to Micky was muted so all of Micky's comments were edited together to sound like a unified piece. Blogs that will be tied into this episode will be: Micky's post on post-cynical christianity Bo's pentecost's initial aim and historic drift a Radical Theology cliffs-note Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. John Dominic Crossan on God & Empire! [Barrel Aged]

With over 5 years of interviews under out belt - having gone from just friends listening to 50k - realizing that there are a ton of people who can't get the best interviews from the past - let us introduce you to Homebrewed Christianity Barrel Aged podcast. I will be re-releasing the best interviews from the early days, super-short new intros, and hopefully doctored audio. Let me know what you think of the idea. If enough people want to early stuff I will make the series it's own stream and get the first 100 interviews out so newer Deacons can download them. The first coming out of Barrel Aging is Crossan's first visit to the podcast. It was first released in April 2008 but the conversation is still packed full of Biblical Prophetic thunder in Crossan's awesome Irish accent. If you enjoy the episode let us know & go pick up the book God & Empire in paperback. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Here are some things that you will want to connect with: Katharine Sarah Moody (co-organizer of the conference) introduces Caputo. She is a great tweeter - you will want to follow her. Tony Jones posted the 13 points on his blog. Subverting the Norm is a website you will want to keep track of for upcoming opportunities to connect. Emergence, Panenthesim, Science & Process Theology with Joseph Bracken S.J.

Jesuit Philosopher and Theologian Joseph Bracken is our guest this week on the podcast. He recently retired from Xavier University & was honored with an amazing tribute - Seeking Common Ground - which includes articles from John Cobb, Catherine Keller, and more. In this episode we take a tour through Bracken's influential career working toward common ground between religion & science, Aquinas & Whitehead, and Religious Pluralism. I can't tell you how much I enjoy reading and talking with Father Joe. Off the mic he is one of the most amazing nerds I have met & in conversation he has a quick & sensitive intellect. On top of all the nerdiness you even get to hear a little inside Jesuit scoop about the new Pope Francis I. Check out Bracken's previous visits to the podcast where we talk Trinity & Process and then my favorite - Christology! I am sure you are headed to Amazon to get a Bracken book. Nerding Out in the OKC!

This is a live Theology Nerd Throwdown from my visit to Oklahoma City. It was hosted by the local Mutiny Reading group under the leadership of Damien Parks and Todd Littleton. During the evening I talked for an hour about Philosophers loving on Paul, played some tunes, & then got GET interviewed by Greg Horton! Greg Horton was one of the inspirations behind starting the podcast. He had a podcast called 'the Parish' on the wired parish podcast network. Back then he was an emergent Christian and has since left the building. Throughout his journey I have loved following his blog, hearing about his undergrad religion and ethics students, and thinking through some of the serious criticisms he has leveled against the church. Plus he also does some wine reviews. Greg is an intelligent hard a$$ and it was a real honor to get taken to task by him. He wasn't as rough as he was with Paul Young so I only hope next time I get the harsh treatment! When I got back from OKC I had over 5 hours of audio from the live podcast and the follow interview with Greg. What you hear is the 90 minutes of the fun. Then evening was lubricated by the Mad Farmer Brewing extraordinaire Charlie who brewed up my Midnight Saison recipe - Dasein! Whips, Tables, & Hermenutics oh Kirk!

Bo and I reunite their bromance in the Homebrewed Bat Cave after some summer vacationing. There were some brews, delicious cigars, HBC Deacon Shout Outs, & two very giggly theology nerds. We had plans to respond to a respond to a bunch of awesome Deacon sent questions...BUT the good Dr. Daniel Kirk got us distracted. Kirk recently blogged about a past episode of TNT “Nerd Out: Leaving Church, Packing Heat, and Metaphysical Violence” and had some pretty serious questions. In his post "Empire & Cross" where he asks: So, my lingering question for the metaphysics of the non-violent, non-coercive God is this: what do we make of the other parts of the story that make Jesus, and Jesus’ God, look like those forces of coercive power we otherwise see Jesus repudiating? Are those simply bad readings of the passages in question? Or, do we exercise a revisionist hermeneutic in light of [parts of] the Gospels? Bo and I attempted to respond. We definitely had fun...so much fun I ended up telling a story about explosive bowels. We hope you enjoy it! Theology Nerd Throwdown Takes the UCC to Alcatraz!

Bo and I were invited to the United Church of Christ Annual Gathering to rock the Theology Nerd Throwdown. We were joined by Erin Wyma, Thea Mateu, Mary Sue Brookshire, and Dave Palmer. Best of all they secured us a space at the Alcatraz Brewing Company for the late night theology party. There were about 40 UCCers and local HBC Deacons in attendance and then an Orange County brewery that packed full of people who had this conversation show up on there Friday night out. We must give a big shout out to Deacon Billy Steele for coming all the way from North Carolina to be there in the flesh! In our conversation we discussed Obama's kill list, women in ministry, the growth of progressive churches, gay and polygamous marriage, partisan divisions, and prophetic preaching among other topics. You will notice that these UCCers go silent like MSNBC when I give President Obama a hard time but after that they were rather open. A couple of the Deacons in attendance said afterwards "this is what liberal Christians sound like." Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Secularizing Christianity with John Cobb

The one great world religion is killing the planet on the backs of the poor. Will the church let this death-dealing faith, economism, win? John Cobb is here to challenge the church with a progressive missiology. One in which the church is called to join God in working for the salvation of the world. What do we gotta do? We need to combat religiosity and secularism by secularizing Christianity! This is the first part of session four from the emergent village theological conversation. John's first appearance was posted here and here where he discusses Christology and the Common Wealth of God. Profano Theology with Barry Taylor!

Deacons I am thrilled to let you all in to a live HBC house-show & yard party with your favorite British PoMo theological and cultural super star Barry Taylor (check him on the podcast, with Peter Rollins on the Apostle Paul and at Theology After Google). The show is almost an hour and a half of interactive theology, inappropriate religious jokes, guitar strumming, Pop Culture commentary, & curse word Bingo (Barry will explain…I hear lay people at his church invented it). If you can't imagine course language and thick sarcasm being use for something fruitful then please don't listen. Pete Rollins may have his Pyro-theology but we got Profane Theology. This was recorded September 30, 2011. We discuss Scot McKnight's King Jesus Gospel, Peter Rollins, Mark Driscoll's Thug Jesus excitement, reality TV (and Christianity), Phyllis Tickle, Mel Gibson's love of the Jewish people, the Passion of the Christ, Rob Bell, Love Wins, Rick Warren, Shane Hipps, techno-noise, AC/DC, the Star Wars religion, changing religious data, skulls, and trash art. Dr. Barry Taylor is the Associate Rector at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Beverly Hills, California. He also teaches theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary, where he is the Artist-in-Residence for the Brehm Center, and he teaches advertising and design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, topics that were part of his theological doctoral study program. He writes and plays music, usually with friends, occasionally for money – his songs have shown up in a few movies, and he has composed a couple of soundtracks for largely over-looked films. He has written a few books: A Matrix of Meaning with Craig Detweiler, A Heretic’s Guide to Eternity, with Spencer Burke, as well as his latest, Entertainment Theology. The Crazy Gay-Hating Minister, Generational Hating, & Tony Jones' Love of Nothing

Theology Nerds Get READY to Throw Down! This week Bo and I have a blast nerding out with abandon. During the episode we enjoyed the Art of Darkness & some Rocky Patel cigars. This episode is hockey style, coming in three periods. 1. The Crazy Gay-Hating Minister, Same-Sex Marriage, and Church\State battles. This conversation kicked off with the rumble Rev. Charles L. Worley stirred up with his hate speech & Bo's big question post 'Is This Even Christianity?' Check out the podcast I recorded with fellow UCC minister Erin on homosexuality and the church. 2. Generational Hating and Radical Orthodoxy frustrations. Deacon Andrew Tatum wrote an amazing blog post 'Generational Blackmail or Tepid Pseudo Spirituality?' in response to a less-than awesome post (but generative question) by James K.A. Smith. Since we recorded the question Barry Taylor joined in the conversation with style. Oh and many thanks to Sarah for calling in. 3. Creation Out of Nothing, Moltmann & Process thought! In this section we discuss the Creatio ex Nihilio squabble Tony Jones started, my response, and the recent HBC podcast episode with 6 theologians debating Creation Out of Nothing. The end of the show is brought to you by the letter 'T.' Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Learn more about your ad choices. The initial panel includes: Philip Clayton, Claremont School of Theology view/download paper Monica A. Coleman, Claremont School of Theology view/download paper Catherine Keller, Drew University view/download paper Michael Lodahl, Point Loma Nazarene University view/download paper Richard Rice, Loma Linda University view/download paper Marit Trelstad, Pacific Lutheran University In the past week Tony Jones picked a little fight over Creation Out of Nothing by quote bombing me with Moltmann, I responded and Tony retorted. Nerd Out! Leaving Church, Packing Heat, and Metaphysical Violence

Why are people leaving Church? Rachel Held Evans blogged it, Bo shared it, and now we discuss it. Andrew Sullivan's post that got the conversation started 'Christianity in Crisis.' In this conversation Tripp discusses three good reasons people are leaving the church Majoring in the Minors Lack of Intellectual Integrity Lack of Ethical Integrity and then questions the impact of age programed ministry through college on the decline of the church. Why does Tripp have gay friends at Acts 29 churches? Then we move on to discussing Jesus and his disciples packing heat. Bo previously blogged all the verses where Jesus mentions swords and then he 'Walter Wink's it' by discussing turn the other cheek. Tripp then wonders about metaphysical violence and Process philosophy. We concluded by getting a little sermonic about the Biblical logic for universalism! Existentialist Philosophy, Politics, & Theology with Paul Capetz

Søren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Jean-Paul Sartre, Karl Barth, & Paul Tillich all make an appearance in this podcast. So sit back and get ready for a nerd-filled fiesta! Prof. Paul Capetz & Deacon Stephen Keating join Bo and I in the Homebrewed Christianity HQ in Redondo Beach on a rainy St. Patrick's Day morning for a podcast. We had a blast! You will enjoy this podcast...if you are into philosophy, history, political ranting, Tillich's theology or existentialism hitting the pews then this is the podcast for you. Paul is an amazing historical theologian, Presbyterian minister, my favorite Calvinist, and dear friend. He was on the podcast for Calvin's 500th birthday, joined John Cobb for our special 101st episode, and explained how a Calvinist gets pumped about Process Theology. THANK YOU..."Secret Deacon" who had JR Cigars deliver some yummy sticks to me. That was awesome. I love it when the Deacons call in and I love it when they donate on PayPal but this 'secret deacon' invented a new form of encouragement - mailing me GOOD cigars. Both of those WE ran the sound system and they sound like gold! This podcast begins with Jack Caputo & Philip Clayton wrestling with religion and Christainity. Then Peter Rollins starts to insurrect things and Jay Bakker helps us get our preaching legs underneath us. Bart Ehrman on Jesus' Existence, Apocalypticism & Holy Week

Bart Ehrman is back on the podcast talking about his newest book Did Jesus Exist? Don't worry the answer is YES! In the conversation Ehrman responds to the popular nonsense of the 'mythicists' who attempt to argue Jesus didn't exist. Like Dan Brown's conspiracy theory, the mythicists may get some followers online but they don't have much of an intellectual case and this top notch atheist leaning New Testament scholar is here to set them straight. Of course that was just part of the conversation. We also discuss the apocalypticism of Jesus, Holy Week, fundamentalism, plays the 'name game' with NT Scholars and then answer Jay Bakker's question. It was a real pleasure to talk with Ehrman and we hope you enjoy it and share the Brew! Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Philip Clayton on The Resurrection, Trinity, Eschatology & the Predicament of Belief

Homebrewed Christianity is thrilled to share the first piece of audio from the Emergent Village theological conversation with philosopher and theologian Philip Clayton. Even more than that we are pumped to announce our first Homebrewed Christianity Theo-nerd Book Party March 15th! BUT FIRST... you can't imagine how thought provoking this podcast is. Philip Clayton gives his first public talk about his newest book The Predicament of Belief which he recently published with friend and President of George Washington University Steven Knapp. As conference coordinators Bo and I challenged Phil to press Process Theology to address those three theological concepts that make most liberals run - the Resurrection, the Trinity, and Eschatology - and he agreed! Not only is the presentation engaging and provocative but the challenge to speak credibly about our faith is a challenge Philip and Steven see impacting the church. Here's how they put it in the book... When church leaders can no longer presuppose a securely shared fabric of beliefs, they rely increasingly on extrinsic motivations: professional musicians, high-tech services, attractive social programs, and the like. The trouble is that reflective persons recognize that such initiatives are no longer tied to compelling and persuasive beliefs about what is ultimately the case. When those beliefs become merely metaphorical or poetic--or worse, when one finds oneself using language one no longer believes but vaguely feels that one ought to believe--one begins to wonder about the raison d'etre of the entire institution and its practices. Is it surprising that many have the sense that (in John Cobb's words) "what we do and say does not seem to be terribly important." (HT: Scot) Since this was a live event the beginning of the podcast may be hard to follow as Phil is commenting on a collection of rather humorous pictures of Jesus but at minute 14 to the end it is straight out theologizing. In this podcast you will hear Philip address... * Divine Action, the Jesus Seminar, Peter Rollins and the Resurrection * Christological uniqueness, particularity, kenosis, and adoptionism * Religious Language, the reality of God, and spectrum of certainity * Self-giving love and feminism * Religious Pluralism Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Mark Scandrette on Experimenting with Truth this Lent

What one change could you make that would change your life forever? What would it look like to take a vow with friends and make it an experiment this lent? During those 40 days leading up to Easter our deepest need for change won’t be addressed by eating fish on Fridays instead of cow flesh or giving up chocolate until Easter. Perhaps what we need is something like the watchfulness Jesus encouraged — or what Gandhi called Experiments in Truth: practices that respect the bodily nature of human spirituality and transformation. (Check out his freshest book for more details) In this special episode you will hear Mark Scandrette lay down the challenge. It was recorded live at my home in preparation for some Lenten experiments with some friends and my high schoolers in confirmation. Just among my friends there are some taking a fast from all critical speaking (including self-directed criticism), meat & alcohol (I'm one of these), gossiping (I would have linked to them but...), and all media (which means they will be behind in the podcast episodes come Easter). Just this past week's time of sharing was pretty powerful example of how much one can learn and change in the right type of community. Any way, I'm sure you can imagine when you hear the conversation. Be sure to check out some VIDEO from Mark's visit here. For more audiological Scandrette check out his first and second visit to the podcast. Then there is the Homebrewed 3D event with Philip Clayton and Daniel Kirk we recorded in Mark's house. The Evolution of Adam with Peter Enns

Peter Enns, author of the new book Evolution of Adam, and professor of biblical studies at Eastern University in St. Davids, Pennsylvania sits down with Tripp for an action packed conversation about Adam's lack of a belly button! Ok, may be not BUT they do discuss how Israel, Paul, the early church, and Christians today relate to that powerful story of the first human. Insights from science, the results of historical research, and hermeneutical questions abound throughout the conversation. More importantly for many of our listeners will be Peter's sensitivity to our more conservative Christians fears surrounding this issue and some of his sage like advice in moving forward. This conversation is blastand we hope you enjoy it, share it, and send us a shout out by clicking that button on the right side of the post. This book isn't the first time Peter has been in evangelical hot water and probably not the last. Peter is not scared of controversy but from what I can tell it comes right out of his evangelical commitment to scripture. On his blog Rethinking Biblical Christianity he just replied to Kevin De Young's 10 reasons to believe in a historical Adam with precision and a generous account of what has a rather harsh, unkind, and (for me at least) nonsensical defense of an incredulous assertion. James McGrath's response was also pretty awesome. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Learn more about your ad choices. Mutants and Mystics with Jeffery Kripal: HBC episode 134

Whose ready for some mystical, mutant, comic book, and science fiction fun? I know I am! Prof. Jeffery Kripal joins the podcast this week to philosophize about his love for the paranormal and mystical part of human experience. In doing so he turns to the wonderful world of comic books and science fiction but not as a reporter or historian but as a place where deep metaphysical issues and religious questions are being addressed through pop culture. I have been thrilled to share this conversation ever since we recorded it. While many of our regular listeners won't be able to go everywhere Jeff goes philosophically...Gnosticism & psychedelic drugs... I am confident his cultural exegesis and mapping of mystical narratives will have you entertained and intrigued. Mutant Linkage... * Mutants & Mystics was a Patheos book club so there are a ton of blog reviews, a Kripal interview, round table, sample from the book, and more...check it out. * Ryan Parker has the most uber-awesome review of the book * If you dig the interview check out Jeff's podcast The Impossible Talk Podcast where he and his film making partner Scott Hulan Jones have "sophisticated, open discussions of and lectures on the paranormal and anomalous dimensions of American culture." Coming to Jesus with Daniel Kirk & Philip Clayton: Homebrewed Christianity 3-D

What does coming to Jesus look like today? We may not have the answer but we do have a seriously fun and enlightening conversation. During the American Academy of Religion a herd of theology nerds gathered in the home of Mark Scandrette - Jesus Dojo extraordinaire - for some live Homebrewed Christianity podcast fun. Daniel Kirk (New Testament Prof at Fuller Theological Seminary) and Philip Clayton (Philosophical Theologian and Dean of Claremont School of Theology) were our featured contributors but the crowd Deacons who gathered made the entire experience a blast. On top of the podcast we all enjoyed the wonderful food provided by the Scandrette family, the huge bottle of Bullet Bourbon from Rebekah, 3 amazing homebrews from Kirk, and some great questions at the end. We hope you enjoy the live brew. If you dig it you should make plans to join us February 12 at Claremont for John Caputo going 3-D or holla about hosting a show in your own home\bar\church.
