Youth Ministers, the Niebuhr Revival, @pastormark & Other Goodies #PYM14
Jonnie, Tony Jones & I were lucky to bring the Homebrewed Christianity heat LIVE at the Progressive Youth Ministry conference. This episode includes some of the excitement that was had. It kicks off with a tasty interview with DePaul professor of religion, theo-blogger & Moltmaniac Scott Paeth. We discuss his new book (which is awesome and easy to read) The Niebuhr Brothers for Armchair Theologians, the Hauerwasian Mafia, and the future of progressive Christian ethics in America. Then Tony Jones and I had a serious battle of au contraire mon fraire... Tony Jones did not win. That was great BUT... little did we anticipate Jonnie would secretly orchestrate his victory with a statement that blew our mind. If that wasn't enough we had Trey Pearson of Everyday Sunday & Carter DJ-ing the show & post-pod dance party...oh yeah that happened... Our wonderful host 4th Presbyterian & John Vest were amazing & even arranged to have some delicious Revolution Brewing & Goose Island beer at the celebration. Chalice, the TNT publishing partner, also did some awesome give-away fun at the event. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Why Write a Liberal Theology? w/ Douglas Ottati
Why write a liberal theology? That's a good question & we got an interview size answer! Buckle your theological safety belt because this episode is going to get seriously awesome. If you remember Dr. Ottati's last visit to the podcast then you are already excited! Professor Ottati is the Craig Family Distinguished Professor in Reformed Theology and Justice Ministry at Davidson College in North Carolina. He is one of the best communicators I know. Not only is he a top-notch nerd but he has a strong love for the church and bringing theological goodness into local congregations. PS. Ottati rocks the name game with a level of skill that rivals Jurgen Moltmann's fun with Tony Jones and I. Phyllis Tickle LIVE 3D & Au Contraire Mon Frère II
Phyllis Tickle was at Fuller Seminary for a talk about her new book "The Age of the Spirit". She then came over to (a)Spire to have a pint with us. This was no ordinary pint! Tripp brewed 'The Grain Emergence: a 500 year rummage ale'. We do some Q & R with Phyllis - then Barry Taylor chats with her. Then we played "Au Contraire Mon Frère II" with Tripp and Tony. Round 3 will be in Chicago at the Progressive Youth Ministry Conference later this month. This is a rough-cut edit. That means that a couple of swear words made it through the filter ... and that some things removed for public conception. We want to thank Andy and his team plus all those who helped to make this event happen and to those who came out and made this an amazing night. PS Claire also brought some amazing home brew. That was tasty. We also want to wish Phyllis a Happy 80th Birthday!! Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. TNT: Tripp's Timed Process Responses, Drugs & God as 'He'
Ahmed (@woodylovesJesus) & Tim 'the Elder of Hops' (@timothytalks) visit the throw-down! This TNT was recorded after the Hobbit LIVE video-cast with Gregory Walter. Suffice to say, it was a rowdy affair. We start with a 3 minute challenge for Tripp to answer each of Process Theology's big concerns. The 3 of us then judge him after each round. The 2nd question relates to drugs and tragedy. The 3rd question is about the gender of God. You might want to skip to the 8th min when the action really starts. In minute 38 we change things up. The Hobbit, Smaug, & Weak Power w/ Gregory Walter
Who doesn’t love J.R.R. Tolkien, the mythology of Middle Earth, and getting to see Smaug (the most EPIC of all dragons) on the big screen? If Led Zeppelin can sing about it and nerds can roll 12 sided dice about it, then it must be pretty awesome. On Thursday February 6th we hosted a live video streaming podcast with Gregory Walter to nerd out about Tolkien’s world. It was an amazing conversation in which you get convo about the book, movie, and all the Middle Earth mythology. Our guest is Dr. Gregory Walter, a professor of religion and Pro Grade Hobbiter. He is a professor at St. Olaf College and was recently on the podcast to discuss his new book Being Promised: Theology, Gift, and Practice. At the end of the podcast we realized our mutual love for the Hobbit and this podcast idea was born! You can check out the video HERE. Gregory's list of the essential Tolkien texts can be found HERE. Theological Legend Michael Welker on Constructive Christology
Who is Jesus Christ for us today? Is there a way to even attempt to answer the question with intellectual credibility? One of Germany's greatest theologians, Michael Welker, is on the podcast discussing his new book God the Revealed: Christology. In the book and on the podcast we discuss the quest for the historical, theological engagement with the natural sciences, the cultural shifts in the church, atonement theories, our shared love of Whitehead, and a bunch of other nerdy bits of goodness. It was a real honor to get to talk with Dr. Welker. I have read so many of his texts over the years & have long admired his work. The creativity of mind and clarity in his writing are always impressive but in this conversation it was the depth of his faith and love of the church that struck me. I hope you all enjoy the conversation as much as I did and share it far and wide so I can talk him into coming back on the podcast. Last week's 2013 Year In Review show took longer than expected - so we had to break off this conversation into its own episode. First, Bo talks with Tripp about a 'Kind' of Conservatism. Then Micky and Bo chat about gendering God. You may want to check out Bo's old post on Calling God She and She Who Is Not as well as Elizabeth Johnson's Barrel-Aged podcast about the Quest for the Living God. Promise, Gift, and Postmodern Theology... oh and the Hobbit with Gregory Walter
It's a new year and time to meet a new theologian! Gregory Walter is a professor of religion at St. Olaf in Minnesota and author of Being Promised: Theology, Gift & Practice - one of the 5 books on the Theology Nerd's Christmas list. In our conversation we discuss Luther, Derrida, phenomenology, Jungel, and a bunch of other goodies. Greg's book is pretty awesome. It's ground-breaking, less than 100 pages, nerdy and practical.... plus the cover pic is stylish. I had a HUGE blast talking with Dr. Walter. When you get to talk about a book you enjoyed, get side tracked on Jungel, and discuss the Hobbit it's called a podcast victory! I can't wait for his next visit to Homebrewed. That is just a bit of what is in store for you in this special Christmas episode! Tripp planned on just getting a TNT segment out of his chat with Adam... then they just kept talking... and it turned in to a Christmas present for all the Deacons. Dr. Adam English, author of The Saint Who Would be Clause and Remixing Theology, is professor of Religion and Philosophy at Campbell University. Quest for the Living God w/ Elizabeth Johnson
The 20th century was an amazing time for the doctrine of God. All of a sudden the church unleashed a bunch of voices previously silenced to hear their testimony, explorations & experiences of God... and theology got so much better. Legendary Catholic Theologian - Elizabeth Johnson - is on this episode of the Barrel Aged Homebrewed Podcast. We discuss her book Quest for the Living God which is simply one of the best introductions to theology I know. It is super readable, intellectually honest, and energizing for the theo-nerd brain. Marcus Borg, Tony Jones, & the Resurrection w/ Jonnie #NerdOut
Jonnie joined my in the HBC Headquarters in Redondo Beach. In the podcast we start discussing the resurrection exchange between Marcus Borg & Tony Jones [aka ToJo] & then end up on the necessity of a physical resurrection, atonement, eschatology, evangelical's Easter concern, and Pannenberg. Attempting to fill in for the BoDaddy is a difficult task but Jonnie did a pretty good job. I think I will let him back on the TNT w/ the BoDaddy so Bo can make sure we actually stay on topic. You will notice I actually start a couple lists of theological options and then get distracted by Pannenberg and John Cobb. The BoDaddy is a pro and knows to limit such theological temptations. During the podcast we drank the Burning Bush IPA and gave a shout out to 350.org for climate change info. In the podcast we discuss these books: 1) Bodies and Souls, or Spirited Bodies? & Beyond Liberalism and Fundamentalism by Nancey Murphey 2) Jesus: God & Man by Wolfhart Pannenberg 3) Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time by Marcus Borg 4) Old Testament Theology by Gerhard von Rad Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. Faith + Gender + Sexuality + Film = Level Ground Film Festival
Get ready for a conversation about sexuality and film with evangelicals. Chelsea McInturff, Samantha Curley, and Ryan Bell visit the HBC headquarters in Redondo Beach to chat up the planet's first film festival exploring faith, gender and sexuality. Not only will you hear about the upcoming film festival and how you can support it, but you will hear the story of how a Seminary student group came to kick-off the Level Ground film festival. Fuller is the largest Evangelical seminary in the world and the first to sanction an official LGBT student group, One Table, started by Samantha and Chelsea. The community developed there birthed the Level Ground Film Festival. Check them out on facebook. Follow the podcast, drop a review, send feedback/questions or become a member of the HBC Community. John Caputo on the journey form Radical Hermeneutics to the Weakness of God [Barrel Aged]
With over 5 years of interviews under out belt - having gone from just friends listening to 50k - realizing that there are a ton of people who can't get the best interviews from the past - let us introduce you to Homebrewed Christianity Barrel Aged podcast. I will be re-releasing the best interviews from the early days, super-short new intros, and hopefully doctored audio. This is the second episode of John Caputo's first visit to the podcast. It was an EPIC conversation you are sure to enjoy. It's like meeting JC again for the first time! Make sure you check out the amazing bloggers engaging Caputo's newest book The Insistence of God on a Homebrewed Book Tour. Kirk Have I Loved But Tripp?
Daniel Kirk is on the podcast. The most sensational Theo-Blogger, Homebrewing, Fuller Professor of New Testament, and fellow Wake Forest Demon Deacon [he also went to Duke and UNC Chapel Hill but I forgive him for that... Go Deacs!] is on the podcast with a bunch of topics he's looking to settle with me. We had an amazing local for this conversation... only Orange County's greatest brewery... the Bruery. Not only is the Bruery in my Top 10 list of Craft Breweries but Deacon Brian White is one of their master of the taps. Kirk's previous visits to the podcast include this LIVE one from Mark Scandrette's house party in San Fran with Philip Clayton and a sweet discussion of Easter recorded during Holy Week. Reza Aslan LIVE 3D Event!
Reza Aslan, New York Times #1 BestSelling Author of Jesus: The Life And Times Of Jesus Of Nazareth recorded a live Podcast with Tripp and Bo. As you will hear, Reza rolled with our rowdy style of theological zesty-ness. We want to thank the Loft LA for hosting us and The Young Romans for providing great music for the evening. TNT bonus track: Young People & the Church
In this bonus track Bo chats with Micky Jones about the now infamous Rachel Held Evans post on CNN Religion about young people leaving the church. Then Bo and Tripp chat about what the topic means as youth pastors at Mainline churches. These two conversation were originally recorded earlier this summer as part of a bigger conversation that never came together ... but instead of just getting rid of the audio, we wanted to use your responses to frame a future episode of the TNT.
