Starting with World Made by Hand in 2008, Kunstler has written a series of science fiction novels conjecturing such a culture in the future. Kunstler so gives lectures on topics related to suburbia, urban development, and the challenges of what he calls "the global oil predicament" and a resultant change in the “American Way of Life.” He has lectured the TED Conference, the American Institute of Architects, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Association of Science and Technology as well as at numerous colleges and universities, including Yale, MIT, Harvard, Cornell, University of Illinois, DePaul, Texas A & M, West Point, and Rutgers University. HS 182 - Capitalism, Fascism, and Today's Economy Compared to the Great Depression with Devin Foley
A lot of people compare today’s economy in the U.S. with the Great Depression. High unemployment figures that seem to be unrelenting, deflation and inflation, and various bubbles provide some interesting similarities. Jason Hartman and returning guest, Devin Foley compare the historical events with today’s events, including government policies and programs designed to prop up the markets and ideally create jobs. Hear more at: www.JasonHartman.com. As Devin points out, based on historical and present figures, the programs and wars that the government implies will help the economy do not in actuality pull us out of recession or depression. He also talks about other common myths about market corrections and other attempts to right the economy. Devin stresses that economic freedom rather than government interventions, while requiring an adjustment period initially, would ultimately result in recovery, with more realistic prices and a sustainable economy. “When government is taking big steps and big actions and getting very involved in people’s lives based on how people are voting,” warns Devin, “that’s a dangerous proposition to get into. That’s not something that’s going to lead to long-term stability.” Devin and Jason also talk about solutions to the U.S.’s current predicament. Devin is co-founder and president of Intellectual Takeout (www.IntellectualTakeout.org ). In his role, he oversees content development and marketing, works with academics and experts to assure quality, and publicly promotes the site. Prior to co-founding Intellectual Takeout, Devin served as the Director of Development at the Center of the American Experiment, a state-based think tank in Minnesota, where he was responsible for meeting a $1 million annual budget. He has roughly eight years of fundraising and policy experience working for candidates and non-profit organizations. Additionally, he has been on 100.3 KTLK as well as Talk of the Nation on NPR and was named a 2011 Young Leader by the American Swiss Foundation. Devin studied history and political science at Hillsdale College in Michigan. There he met his lovely wife; together they have three kids and live in Stillwater, Minnesota. These moments can be used as a method to promote the company’s values, purposes and agenda, while bringing about higher employee engagement and winning in the marketplace through improved growth. Touch points involve using the head, heart and hands to connect with and transform employees through listening, understanding and helping people advance their interactions in a significantly more effective way. Doug explains the “contribution profile,” which is asking, “How can I help?” Listen at: www.JasonHartman.com/podcast for details. Practitioner Douglas R. Conant delivers a critical and transformative message for today’s times: Anyone, anywhere, can expand their influence and improve their results. Under Conant’s leadership, Campbell reversed a precipitous decline in market value and employee engagement — with much recognition since, including the prestigious 2010 Catalyst Award. A key driver is Campbell’s success model: Winning in the workplace, winning in the marketplace, and winning in the community and doing it all with integrity. Conant joined the company with 25 years of experience with three of the world’s top food companies — General Mills, Kraft, and Nabisco. A native of Chicago, he earned his BA degree from Northwestern and his NBA from the Kellogg School of Management. HS 169 - Supreme Court Victory Against Gene Patenting with Genae Girard
Genae Girard and her lawsuit against Myriad Genetics may just have altered the course of humanity. Genae was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit against the U.S. Patent Office and Myriad Genetics, who had been allowed to patent human genes that were associated with breast and ovarian cancer, then monopolize the testing procedure. Genae was in her early 30's and diagnosed with having a gene (BRCA) that leads to cancer. When she asked for a 2nd opinion, she was told that not only was Myriad the only company that could do the test, but even they would not retest her. Gene Patents Incredibly, this was allowed to go on with the blessing of the U.S. Government. In fact many other companies had patents pending for all different kinds of human genes that have been voided due to Genae's lawsuit. The Unanimous Supreme Court decision in June of 2013 said, among other things, that it is unconstitutional to patent anything that exists in nature. The justices also said that what Myriad had done by creating this monopoly hurt every woman who had the same diagnosis as Genae. They had been able to call all the shots in this field, including which insurance they would accept and had banked all the data relating to their diagnoses. What the Supreme Court Ruling means The ruling broke the monopoly of Myriad Genetics over this incredibly important test. They had been charging an astronomical $3,500 just for the test, but with competition now allowed again, the price should drop to $150. Possibly more importantly, other companies will not be able to patent parts of the human body. How this will effect a mega multinational corporation like Monsanto, who has patented their seeds, has yet to be seen. But needless to say, Genae and her co-plaintiffs have changed the world.

In November of 2002 just two weeks after the birth of his daughter Lindsey, Mark found himself the intended victim of an attempted carjacking while approaching a traffic light on E. Fletcher Ave. in the Suitcase City section of Tampa, FL at 6:20 am on his way to work. A well known drug and crime infested area bordering the University of South Florida, Mark passed through the area every day. Luckily on that November morning he was carrying a Glock 36, 45 caliber handgun resting in a Sidearmor Kydex IWB holster. When the criminals… both of them…found themselves unable to get into the vehicle stopped just off of his left bumper, they turned their attention to him. Watching the frightening events unfold in front of him and happening at a frantic pace, Mark un-holstered his weapon and leveled his 45 at the criminal standing just feet away from him and approaching his vehicle. When confronted with a gun pointed directly at his chest, the closest attacker waved off his partner and both men retreated to their vehicle. Fleeing like the cowards they were, Mark was able to make it home alive that day. That frightening experience became the subject of his first column with Concealed Carry Magazine titled “The Importance of Carrying Your Gun 100% of The Time”, now listed as one of Concealed Carry Magazines “Best of”. Eleven out of 50 states have now introduced resolutions into their state legislatures calling on Congress to pass Marcy Kaptur's H.R. 129 to re-instate Glass-Steagall, and South Dakota has become the first state to pass the resolution through both houses.Jason interviews Michael Kirsch of LaRouche PAC about the efforts to reinstate the act. These resolutions have broad bi-partisan support, as the matter or bankruptcy reorganization of the banking system is a matter of national prosperity. These were inspired by normal citizens contact their elected representatives with the great need for action, and the more state legislators which can be inspired to put pressure in this way on Congress, the better. Glass-Steagall will enable the commercial banking system, though with a shrunken but purified capital, to become an agency of a national credit system guided by a chief lending institution for national infrastructure projects and associated industries. Listen for more information at: www.HolisticSurvival.com. Michael has written for a new credit Bank of the United States to lend for national industry and agriculture, modeled on the system of public credit of Alexander Hamilton, Mathew Carey, and John Quincy Adams, and Roosevelt's Reconstruction Finance Corporation's industrial loans. A video presentation of the history is available. It would broaden and define the guiding boundaries of the economy as a permanent coordinating agency for credit agreements, rather than serve as a special emergency institution.
