Episode 116a: The Spanish ReformationDescription: The Protestant Reformation really got kicked off in 1517 when Martin Luther nailed his iconic 99 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral. At this time Spain and the Spanish Empire was the most Catholic of Kingdoms. Those two facts don’t tell the entire story though. Inside of that Most Catholic of Kingdom of Spain, there was an idea of reforming the Catholic church that would take many different routes. Some would run parallel with Luther’s Reformation, some would intersect and others would collide. All of this is in the shadow of the Spanish Inquisition. This is a very fun episode for me. It started off with an email from a listener who corrected me on a point I made about the history of the Christian liturgy. It turns out, the listener is a university academic, who has written papers on the foundations of the Christian liturgy. Well I just had to have Professor Andrew Messmer on the show. New information coming out from the academy is always really exciting, especially when it reassesses older theories and ideas. Description: For this episode, we have a really fun collaboration with another papal history podcast, Pontifacts with Bry and Fry. The history of the popes of Rome is such a nearly infinite topic, which is great because the institution can be looked at in many different ways. I take more of a scatter shot approach. I pick and choose and follow threads in interesting directions. I like the politics, philosophy, theology and big picture of the Church and its leadership. Pontifacts takes the approach of providing biographies of each pope and evaluating them. I think that is really great and I am very glad to be able to collaborate with two people who are extremely passionate about a topic I am passionate about as well. Episode 108 Fratelli Tutti Papal Encyclical Description: Papal encyclicals are a big deal and they don’t come out often. Encyclicals are the way the popes of Rome push out their big new teachings. Francis I has been pope a little over 7 years by this point in October 2020 and has just published his third Papal Encyclical. Francis’ encyclicals are whales too.
