120.3 The Septuagint: A Corruption or the Original Text
Transcript URL: https://share.descript.com/view/ahzMpx5Oq3mWelcome to the third episode of the Septuagint series on History of the Papacy podcast. We are joined by Garry Stevens host of The History in the Bible Podcast (historyinthebible.net). In this episode, we'll be exploring the intricacies of translation and the role of different languages in the process. As we know, the Septuagint is a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, which was done around the 3rd century BCE. The story goes that 72 Jewish scholars were tasked with translating the Torah into Greek, and miraculously, all of their translations were identical. But why did the Jews even need a Greek translation of their holy texts? The answer lies in the historical context of the time. After the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek became the lingua franca of the eastern Mediterranean, and many Jews who lived outside of Judea found themselves more comfortable speaking Greek than Hebrew. Furthermore, the Greek language had a particular richness and flexibility that allowed for better expression of certain Jewish concepts. Overall, the Septuagint is a testament to the power of translation and the way that language can shape our understanding of the world. In the next episode of our series, we'll explore the impact that the Septuagint had on early Christian theology. The Separation of Crime and Church?
Transcript URL: https://share.descript.com/view/r8haLwiepXaIn today’s episode, we have a collaboration between the History of the Papacy and Organized Crime and Punishment Podcasts. We will discuss the complex relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and organized crime in southern Italy and the United States, focusing on the mafia groups such as La Cosa Nostra in Sicily, the Camorra in the Campania region, the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria and the 5 Mafia Families of New York City. Despite the Catholic Church's opposition to secret societies, the mafia organizations have shown a unique affinity for the church and its practices. While these criminal groups may be seen as at odds with Catholicism, they often identify as Catholic and maintain strong ties to the church. The discussion also touches upon the broader concept of the separation of church and state, noting that in many parts of the world, including Italy, the fusion of religion and governance is more prevalent. Transcript URL: https://share.descript.com/view/bbpvEtR771fIn this episode, we delve into the topic of Papal Infallibility, examining the differing views of minimalists and maximalists on the subject. Our guest for this episode is Shaun Blanchard, professor and Catholic theologian. Join us as we discuss the historical development of the doctrine of Papal Infallibility, which holds that the Pope is protected by the Holy Spirit from teaching error on matters of faith and morals. We explore the two opposing views on the extent of this infallibility - minimalists who hold that it only applies to specific pronouncements made ex cathedra, and maximalists who argue that it extends to all papal teachings. Shaun helps us to understand the dogma of infallibility and how it relates to the authority of the Church. We also examine the concept of conciliarism, which holds that Church councils are the supreme authority in matters of doctrine, and how it relates to infallibilism. Throughout this conversation, we provide historical examples of how the doctrine of Papal Infallibility has been applied, including the definition of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX in 1854 and the definition of the Assumption of Mary by Pope Pius XII in 1950. Key Battles Of American History - An Unsettled World Germany and the Allies 1918-1930
bonusThe roots of the Second World War in Europe lie within the First World War. The 1919 Treaty of Versailles formally ended the war between Germany and the western Allies, but the geopolitical situation it created was far from stable. Ten years later, the Great Depression made things even worse. In this episode preview from Key Battles of American History (the first in the World War II in Europe series), James and cohost Sean McIver discuss the unsettled state of Europe between 1918 and 1930 and the gradual fracturing of the uneasy peace that it enjoyed. To continue listening to Key Battles of American History, check out the links below!Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3nCfZZySpotify: https://spoti.fi/3nIwO5cDiscover more episodes of Key Battles of American History:Mexico and Texas (1836-1844): https://apple.co/3mbDEjd / https://spoti.fi/3U6ASIJZachary Taylor’s War (1845-1846): https://apple.co/3nNvNJf / https://spoti.fi/3U71E3CWinfield Scott’s War (1847): https://apple.co/3zwZ25v / https://spoti.fi/3GdgqjBIntroduction to Key Battles of World War II in Europe: https://apple.co/3GfVAA5 / https://spoti.fi/3zwGEK3See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

119.34: Reasserting Authority: The Background of the Syllabus of Errors
Transcript URL: https://share.descript.com/view/MwVfrA5Xox3The Syllabus of Errors was part of a larger effort by Pope Pius IX to address what he saw as a growing secularism and liberalism in Europe during the 19th century. This period saw the rise of secular ideologies, such as nationalism and socialism, as well as the growing influence of scientific and philosophical rationalism. In response, Pius IX sought to reaffirm the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church and to reassert its authority over society. The Syllabus of Errors itself was a list of 80 propositions that the Catholic Church considered to be false, dangerous, or heretical. These propositions covered a wide range of topics, including religious freedom, separation of church and state, modernism, and the role of the papacy in society. Many of these propositions were drawn from previous papal encyclicals and other official Church documents, while others were taken from secular sources, such as political speeches and newspaper articles. The Syllabus of Errors was not well-received by many Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Some saw it as a rejection of modernity and progress, while others saw it as an attempt to impose Catholic teachings on society. Nevertheless, the document remained an important symbol of Catholic orthodoxy and papal authority throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Join us next time as we explore the impact of the Syllabus of Errors on the Catholic Church and its teachings. Professor Roach provides insight into the Norman conquest of England and how it affected the papacy, as well as the role of Norman popes, such as Pope Leo IX and Pope Urban II, in shaping the papacy. The Normans were not just military conquerors; they also had a significant impact on the arts, culture, and architecture of the regions they conquered. Professor Roach discusses the Norman style of art and architecture, which was a blend of Norman and local influences, and how it spread throughout Europe. The papacy was not immune to the Normans' influence, and Professor Roach highlights the ways in which the Normans shaped the papacy, including the creation of the Norman kingdom of Sicily, which became a significant ally of the papacy in the struggle against the Holy Roman Empire. The Normans played a crucial role in shaping the history of the papacy and Europe as a whole. Professor Roach provides valuable insight into the Normans' impact and their legacy, which continues to this day. #HistoryOfThePapacy #Normans #MedievalHistory #EuropeanHistory #PopeLeoIX #PopeUrbanII #NormanConquest #NormanArchitecture #NormanArt #NormanKingdom #Sicily #HolyRomanEmpire #Podcast. 119.28: God Is Dead, How Friedrich Nietzsche and the Catholic Church Clashed Over Modernity
In this episode of the Civil War Center Podcast, host Andy Lucien delves into the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, specifically his critiques of Christianity and the Catholic Church, and how they relate to his Nietzschean Framework. Andy also compares Nietzsche's world view to that of Fyodor Dostoyevsky. First, Andy provides a brief background on Nietzsche, explaining his rejection of traditional morality and his belief in the concept of the "Übermensch," or Superman. Andy then focuses on Nietzsche's critiques of the Catholic Church and Christianity, discussing his famous statement that "God is dead" and how he believed that the Church's focus on morality limited individual potential. Next, Andy explains the Nietzschean Framework, which emphasizes individualism, self-creation, and the pursuit of power. He discusses how this framework differs from traditional morality and how it can be applied to modern life. Finally, Andy compares Nietzsche's world view to that of Dostoyevsky. While Nietzsche rejected traditional morality and focused on the individual, Dostoyevsky emphasized the importance of religion and community. Andy discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each philosophy and how they relate to the human experience. #Nietzsche #CatholicChurch #NietzscheanFramework #Dostoyevsky #Philosophy #Individualism #Übermensch #Superman #Morality #Religion #Community #CivilWarCenterPodcast Today’s Guest: Andy Lucien of the Civil War Center Podcast https://thecivilwarcenter.com/ You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: [email protected] https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Begin Transcript:See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

119.27: Finishing The Risorgimento: Italy Tries to Create an Empire and Fails
Today we're continuing to discuss a pivotal moment in Italian history: the Risorgimento. This was a period of political and social revolution that ultimately led to the unification of Italy as a single nation-state. One event that occurred during the Risorgimento was Italy's attempt to build an empire in Ethiopia. In 1896, Italy invaded Ethiopia in an effort to expand its territory and influence, but they were met with fierce resistance and ultimately suffered a devastating defeat. This was a major blow to Italy's imperial ambitions and marked the end of their attempts to colonize Ethiopia. Despite this setback, Italy continued to try and build an empire, but they were met with repeated failure. These attempts were marked by military defeats and diplomatic failures, which ultimately led to the country's decline as a major power. The Risorgimento was an important period in Italian history that led to the country's unification, but it also highlighted Italy's failed attempts to build an empire. 119.25: Pizza, Pinocchio and the Papacy: Finding the Very Best and Very Worst of Italy
Today we will be discussing the Risorgimento, the best and worst ideologies in Italy, Pinocchio as a metaphor for Italian unification, and of course, pizza. The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. This period saw the rise of many notable figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo di Cavour, who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy. When it comes to ideologies in Italy, there have been both positive and negative influences on the country's history. On the positive side, the liberal and democratic ideals that emerged during the Risorgimento have had a lasting impact on Italian society and politics. On the negative side, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini in the early 20th century had a devastating impact on the country and its people. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can also be seen as a metaphor for the Italian unification. The character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy can be seen as a metaphor for the transformation of Italy from a collection of separate states to a unified nation. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions. Whether you're a fan of traditional Margherita or a more unconventional topping, there's a pizza for everyone. #Risorgimento #ItalianUnification #Pinocchio #Pizza #ItalianCulture Today’s Guest: Joseph Pascone, Host of Turning Tides Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/turning-tides/id1653316649 You can learn more about the History of Papacy and subscribe at all these great places: http://atozhistorypage.com/ https://www.historyofthepapacypodcast.com email: [email protected] https://www.patreon.com/historyofthepapacy parthenonpodcast.com https://www.gettr.com/user/atozhistory Beyond the Big Screen: Beyondthebigscreen.com The History of the Papacy on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6DO2leym3kizBHW0ZWl-nA Get Your History of the Papacy Podcast Products Here: https://www.atozhistorypage.com/products Help out the show by ordering these books from Amazon! https://smile.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1MUPNYEU65NTF Music Provided by: "Sonatina in C Minor" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Funeral March for Brass" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "String Impromptu Number 1" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) "Intended Force" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Agnus Dei X - Bitter Suite Kevin MacLeaod (incomptech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Begin Transcript:See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
