We are joined by Garry Stevens host of The History in the Bible Podcast (historyinthebible.net). In this episode, we'll be exploring the intricacies of translation and the role of different languages in the process. As we know, the Septuagint is a Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, which was done around the 3rd century BCE. The story goes that 72 Jewish scholars were tasked with translating the Torah into Greek, and miraculously, all of their translations were identical. But why did the Jews even need a Greek translation of their holy texts? The answer lies in the historical context of the time. After the conquests of Alexander the Great, Greek became the lingua franca of the eastern Mediterranean, and many Jews who lived outside of Judea found themselves more comfortable speaking Greek than Hebrew. Furthermore, the Greek language had a particular richness and flexibility that allowed for better expression of certain Jewish concepts. Overall, the Septuagint is a testament to the power of translation and the way that language can shape our understanding of the world. We will discuss the complex relationship between the Roman Catholic Church and organized crime in southern Italy and the United States, focusing on the mafia groups such as La Cosa Nostra in Sicily, the Camorra in the Campania region, the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria and the 5 Mafia Families of New York City. Despite the Catholic Church's opposition to secret societies, the mafia organizations have shown a unique affinity for the church and its practices. While these criminal groups may be seen as at odds with Catholicism, they often identify as Catholic and maintain strong ties to the church. The discussion also touches upon the broader concept of the separation of church and state, noting that in many parts of the world, including Italy, the fusion of religion and governance is more prevalent. Our guest for this episode is Shaun Blanchard, professor and Catholic theologian. Join us as we discuss the historical development of the doctrine of Papal Infallibility, which holds that the Pope is protected by the Holy Spirit from teaching error on matters of faith and morals. We explore the two opposing views on the extent of this infallibility - minimalists who hold that it only applies to specific pronouncements made ex cathedra, and maximalists who argue that it extends to all papal teachings. Shaun helps us to understand the dogma of infallibility and how it relates to the authority of the Church. We also examine the concept of conciliarism, which holds that Church councils are the supreme authority in matters of doctrine, and how it relates to infallibilism. Throughout this conversation, we provide historical examples of how the doctrine of Papal Infallibility has been applied, including the definition of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX in 1854 and the definition of the Assumption of Mary by Pope Pius XII in 1950. This period saw the rise of secular ideologies, such as nationalism and socialism, as well as the growing influence of scientific and philosophical rationalism. In response, Pius IX sought to reaffirm the traditional teachings of the Catholic Church and to reassert its authority over society. The Syllabus of Errors itself was a list of 80 propositions that the Catholic Church considered to be false, dangerous, or heretical. These propositions covered a wide range of topics, including religious freedom, separation of church and state, modernism, and the role of the papacy in society. Many of these propositions were drawn from previous papal encyclicals and other official Church documents, while others were taken from secular sources, such as political speeches and newspaper articles. The Syllabus of Errors was not well-received by many Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Some saw it as a rejection of modernity and progress, while others saw it as an attempt to impose Catholic teachings on society. Nevertheless, the document remained an important symbol of Catholic orthodoxy and papal authority throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Today we're continuing to discuss a pivotal moment in Italian history: the Risorgimento. This was a period of political and social revolution that ultimately led to the unification of Italy as a single nation-state. One event that occurred during the Risorgimento was Italy's attempt to build an empire in Ethiopia. In 1896, Italy invaded Ethiopia in an effort to expand its territory and influence, but they were met with fierce resistance and ultimately suffered a devastating defeat. This was a major blow to Italy's imperial ambitions and marked the end of their attempts to colonize Ethiopia. Despite this setback, Italy continued to try and build an empire, but they were met with repeated failure. These attempts were marked by military defeats and diplomatic failures, which ultimately led to the country's decline as a major power. The Risorgimento was an important period in Italian history that led to the country's unification, but it also highlighted Italy's failed attempts to build an empire. Today we will be discussing the Risorgimento, the best and worst ideologies in Italy, Pinocchio as a metaphor for Italian unification, and of course, pizza. The Risorgimento was a period of political and social upheaval in Italy that lasted from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. The movement aimed to unite the various states and regions of Italy into one unified nation. This period saw the rise of many notable figures such as Giuseppe Garibaldi and Camillo di Cavour, who played a crucial role in the unification of Italy. When it comes to ideologies in Italy, there have been both positive and negative influences on the country's history. On the positive side, the liberal and democratic ideals that emerged during the Risorgimento have had a lasting impact on Italian society and politics. On the negative side, the rise of fascism under Benito Mussolini in the early 20th century had a devastating impact on the country and its people. Pinocchio, the beloved children's story written by Carlo Collodi, can also be seen as a metaphor for the Italian unification. The character's journey from a wooden puppet to a real boy can be seen as a metaphor for the transformation of Italy from a collection of separate states to a unified nation. And last but not least, let's talk about pizza. Italy's most famous export, pizza is a symbol of the country's rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions.
