Ep 142Episode 109: Tribute to Col. Bruce Hampton
This week we take a moment to say farewell to a man who has touched and influenced so many in our scene, Colonel Bruce Hampton, Ret. He has often been referred to as a "godfather of the jam scene," and he was respected and loved by so many. He was a leader of the jamband scene, as it grew from the clubs of the late 80s and spawned H.O.R.D.E. in the early 90s and through to today. He passed surrounded by loved ones, friends, and fans, doing what he did for so long, introducing the unexpected into music. Whether it be the Hampton Grease Band, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Fiji Mariners, the Code Talkers, or playing Trombone with Phis, he provoked his fellow players to circumvent the obvious and inspired them to rise to ever greater heights. This episode focuses on the intersections of Col. Bruce and Phish, of course, and also some other music (see below). A few other things: please give us input into our survey about how Phish has impacted your life. We have some good ideas for what to do with this stuff, so get your submission in! Ep 138Episode 105: Joel Cummins Interview
We're really excited to be releasing this interview with Joel Cummins of Umphreys McGee! Brad caught up with Joel while the tour was coming through Phoenix. Fun conversation about Umphrey's and Phish, with some music as well (tracks and timing below). Also, pretty cool that you can hear members of the band practicing in the background, as this was recorded backstage. We had a great time with this interview, and we hope you enjoy. Ep 135Episode 103: Tweezer So Cold
For many (most?) fans, there’s no greater gift at a Phish show than a Tweezer. Phish experiences are formed and strengthened based on single performances of this song. Shows can be saved by its appearance, soaring out of the speakers with Superman cape and all. Our friend and collaborator Matt is the brains behind this episode, and we're grateful to him for taking this on and putting this awesome resource together. Here's a link to the Tweezer So Cold data dashboard that Matt created (it's also embedded below). Also for this episode, we're collaborating with Phish.net again. Their hard work laid the foundation for all of the stuff Matt has done, and they agreed to host a blog post we put together about this episode. This episode is a mixture of us talking about Tweezer and playing LOTS of awesome Tweezer clips. Because this was such a great discussion, we only made it from the Tweezer debut in 1990 through 2000. Part 2 to tackle 2.0 and 3.0 will be coming soon. We're eager to hear your thoughts and feedback. Please subscribe and review us on iTunes and follow us on Twitter. Also like us on Facebook. Ep 134Episode 102: HF Pod Plays Dead
Hello friends! This week we're doing something different: we're playing Dead. Jonathan took the lead on this experiment, and we hope you'll like it. If you do, we may do it more in the future. Let us know what you think. The Grateful Dead has of course been a huge influence on all of us, and we wanted to share some of our thoughts and the Dead's music with our listeners. The music in this episode is a mix made by Jonathan, made up of many different snippets of versions of The Other One. Hope you enjoy. One of two exceptions being the 1985-06-30 (MPP, Columbia, MD) clip which is actually from the Space which preceeded The Other One. The clip contains an simulated bomb and explosion generated via midi. See below for the other exception. * This is the entire 1974-02-23 The Other One (approx 29minutes) 'folded' much in the style of John Oswald who created the "GreyFolded" album. Essentially, I took the entire 29 minute track, cut it in half, reversed the second half and overlayed it onto the first. Then I repeated the process until the track was reduced to the 1 second version currently in this mix. Venue information is not repeated so as to keep things relatively tidy.
