Can the doctor taking care of you in the hospital be trusted? In this episode of "Health Care News," Twila Brase, R.N., a leading voice on patient advocacy and privacy, explains how hospitals are employing "hospitalists" who are more accountable to the hospital corporation than to patients. While physicians cannot mistreat patients or neglect their care due to liability and licensing concerns, those employed by hospitals may have to follow standardized treatment protocols that may not be tailored to individual patients. Minnesota is considering a bipartisan "Trusted Doctor" bill, the first of its kind in the country, that allows patients to choose a trusted physician to treat them, regardless of whether the physician has hospital privileges. This issue arose during the pandemic when family physicians were prevented from treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients with drugs like Ivermectin, as hospitals followed other protocols. Outside physicians were even banned from treating their patients in hospitals from New York to Florida. Brase discusses when the trend that led to hospitalists really took off, which was during the introduction of the Accountable Care Organizations under Obamacare. Hospitals could receive revenue based on the ACA's "shared savings programs," and so physicians were pressured to be more accountable to their hospital employers. Additionally, Brase highlights the continued work on HIPAA, the often-misunderstood privacy protection provision in healthcare. Earlier this week, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its AR6 climate change report. Expectedly, the report is defined by serial doomcasting and claims of impending catastrophe despite the growing mountain of failed predictions that are conveniently ignored.One of the most controversial claims made in the report is that anthropogenic emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main driver of temperature change. Real-world data has proven this false, yet it’s the main takeaway in each IPCC report.First released on Monday was the “Summary for Policymakers,” a section intended to guide policymaking decisions across the globe. The AR6 report continues to omit key information in favor of sensationalized claims that are easily refuted. For example, the 36-page summary doesn’t include a single mention of the logarithmic relationship between atmospheric CO2 concentrations and global temperature. Surely, policymakers should know that each unit of CO2 added to the atmosphere has a decreasing effect on temperature. The IPCC’s omission of this relationship implies that the warming effect of CO2 concentrations is linear, leading policymakers to overestimate the impact of CO2 emissions on global temperature and overcommit to emissions reduction strategies that are expensive and ineffective.Don't miss this data-driven discussion with host Anthony Watts and panelists, H. Most people recognized the acronym AARP. It’s for the American Association of Retired Persons. But few realize that rather than represent the interests of seniors, AARP acts to promote the interests of the health insurance industry at the expense of retirees and their pocketbooks. Chris Jacobs, founder of Juniper Research, has been investigating the AARP’s cozy deals with health insurance companies for years. Jacobs joins the podcast to discuss his new analysis of the AARP as well as the organization’s support of anti-Medicare policies. He also highlights the hidden surcharges the AARP collects off Medigap policies it promotes. Jacob’s new analysis, which can be found here, found that the AARP collected $627.2 million in surplus fees that were secretly tacked on to health insurance policies AARP promoted for the United Health Group. The fees comprise 69 percent of the AARP’s revenue. Not surprisingly, the AARP supports policies such as drug price controls contained in the recent Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that work more to the benefit of insurers than policy holders. Details are now emerging just how much the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) overstated deaths from COVID-19. Joel Hirschhorn, the editor of the Pandemic Blunder Substack and author of the book, Pandemic Blunder, dug deep into the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) to see just how brazen the hype had been. Zero-emission energy mandates are undermining grid reliability and substantially increasing energy costs in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These mandates pose similar problems for the grid nationwide. Public utilities are profiting from the legislative push for zero-emission energy mandates. Unfortunately, these mandates increase the amounts of expensive, intermittent wind and solar added to the grid. Increasing black outs and brown outs. Legislators should put an end to the premature retirement of existing coal plants to ensure grid reliability. Social media companies have defended their close relationship with the government to control the COVID narrative by saying it was voluntary and protected under the First Amendment. This raises a number of Constitutional red flags, says Jenin Younes, a litigator with the New Civil Liberties Alliance. The Biden administration announced this week that it was considering a ban on gas stoves, supposedly because it causes asthma in kids – a claim not backed up by science. In his book Clean Energy Crisis, Donn Dears explains why it is impossible for society to reach net zero carbon emissions. Dears explains why it would be a bad idea to attempt to go net zero if this was a realistic possibility. Fossil fuels are energy dense, having relatively little impact on the land and environment. Wind and solar require far more land, leaving a massive environmental "footprint." Not only are the so-called green energy replacements for fossil fuels not green, but they are expensive and unreliable. As wind and solar power is added to the grid, lives are placed at risks from outages while jobs are lost due to unreliable energy supplies. Now that Obamacare has been in effect for eight years, data is showing that Medicaid spending on low-income children has not kept pace with states that decided against expanding their programs to able-bodied adults. In his book Time to Think Small, author Todd Myers explains why big government efforts usually fail to fix the problem at hand. Rather, these attempts often create greater problems than the original problem they intended to solve. By contrast, new technologies, individuals and groups can provide flexible solutions to environmental problems that improve both the environment and society. Technologies, like cell phones and the apps they can run are allowing individuals and small groups to develop new insights into the causes and consequences of environmental problems and solutions to them at the local level. By contrast, one-size-fits all big government "solutions," often misidentify the problem and/or its causes, take time to develop, are inflexible, and often make a bad situation worse.
