Do you let the feeling of “not feeling like it” get in the way of your goals? In this solo episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast, I chat about the importance of focusing on how you will feel in the future, after you do something that you know you should do, instead of focusing on how you feel in the moment. Whether it be working out or drinking, it’s important to think of how you feel now and how it may make you feel after you do the “thing”. What I discuss: 00:43: Where should you put your focus? 05:16: Why do people enjoy alcohol? 08:01: How should you think of what to focus on? S1 Ep 263Episode 263: Professor Scott Galloway: Why Following Your Passion is Only For The Rich
Is following your passion really the way to go if you want to become rich? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Professor Scott Galloway, our esteemed guest on this episode, who turned a major disappointment – being turned away from UCLA tryouts – into a driving force that sparked profound personal growth and transformation. A renowned author and motivational speaker, Tony shares tales of his struggles and successes, unearthing invaluable insights about commitment, finding your niche, and embracing personal evolution. Professor Galloway explains how success isn't merely about intelligence. It's a complex blend of risk-taking, aggression, sales skills, seizing opportunities, and living life to the fullest. He also explains how it's not all about personal journeys - we also navigate the broader societal landscape, examining the profound impact technology has on relationships, dating, and socialization, as well as the loneliness epidemic that’s silently wreaking havoc in our society. Scott Galloway is a Professor of Marketing at NYU Stern School of Business where he teaches Brand Strategy and Digital Marketing to MBA students and is the author of the Digital IQ Index ®, a global ranking of prestige brands' digital competence. In 2012, Professor Galloway was named "One of the World's 50 Best Business School Professors". What we discuss: (0:00:01) - Following Passion and Personal Growth (0:10:54) - The Correlation Between Intelligence and Success (0:15:12) - Moving to London and Life Experiences (0:26:50) - Evolution of Courses and Personal Reflections (0:31:16) - Technology's Impact on Human Relationships (0:44:04) - Challenges and Solutions for Young Men (0:51:10) - Technology's Impact on Relationships and Mental Health (1:03:36) - Social Media Impact, Fitness Importance (1:10:50) - Coping With Depression and Hollywood Frustrations (1:21:13) - Book Promotion and Appreciation Key takeaways: The truth about the common advice of “following your passion” is that the person giving you this advice is already rich. They also most likely made their billions in iron or smelting. Ideally, find something you like that has 90 plus percent employment rate, which things like acting, modeling, sports do not have. Then, commit to becoming great at it. So if you find something you're good at and you start making money at it, the passion will follow. The correlation between intelligence and success exists, but it tops out. A person who's got a 120 IQ is much more likely to be successful than someone at 80. But above that, it flatlines. Plus, when you get really, really smart, it actually turns on you and that is because you become so thoughtful and see so many downsides to everything. One thing that entrepreneurs have is they’re too stupid to know we're going to fail. Parents, this question is for you: do you really feel rested after a family trip? In this solo episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with you about the difference between a family trip and a vacation. While society may like to make you believe that these family trips are necessary for building family memories, they’re not the trips that will allow you to come back to reality feeling fully rested. I also talk about how you can actually plan a relaxing vacation and whether or not your kids can be a part of it. What I discuss: 02:02: Is it possible to have a relaxing trip? 03:11: Can you relax on a family trip? 05:18: How can you shift from trip to vacation? 09:26: Is being on a trip with children traumatizing as a child-less person? S1 Ep 257Episode 257: Elon Gold: The Truth About Achieving Greatness in the Showbiz
Have you ever wondered what life behind the mic of a comedian looks like? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, we chat with the ever-so-hilarious and insightful, Elon Gold. We kick off with a raw and humorous chat on the hustle and grind of the comedy world and exploring how he started. There's also a thoughtful exposition on being Modern Orthodox and the essence of keeping traditions alive. Elon Gold is a comedian and actor who has starred in FOX's 'Stacked’ and NBC's 'In-Laws’. His one hour stand up special on Netflix, “Elon Gold: Chosen & Taken” received wide acclaim from audiences and peers alike. It is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. What we discuss: (0:00:00) - About Elon Gold's Comedy Career (0:10:57) - How important is tradition and belief in God? (0:23:22) - How does the show business work? (0:28:06) - Joining Larry David's Show Journey (0:38:17) - How does making a living in comedy look like? (0:41:02) - What lessons can comedy teach us? (0:51:22) - What can comedy do to help with recent incidents against jews? (1:00:02) - Should comedians cover controversial topics? (1:12:58) - Which women in comedy are the funniest? (1:18:55) - What type of people should we take advice from? (1:33:36) - What does Elon like to do to relax? (1:43:43) - What is the secret to a successful marriage? Key takeaways: When you wake up in the morning, it’s important to meditate so you can focus on the beauty and truth in your life. However, it’s equally important that you express gratitude for everything worth being grateful about in your life. Whether you like to observe your own thoughts or talk to your God, spending time reflecting on your thoughts and thanking the Universe or God for everything you have is imperative to a happy and successful life. In the show business, there’s no such thing as someone helping you out just for the sake of helping you out. In order for someone to give you a shot or a big break, it needs to be mutually beneficial. This is something that may sound harsh, but it is true in other types of relationships as well, such as romantic ones. If one partner is the only one doing all the work, the relationship won’t survive. Every and any talent you have is God-given. You are born good at something for a reason but you have to work very hard to be great at it. This talent is given to you so you know which craft to work on and become the best at. S1 Ep 255Episode 255: Jillian Turecki: The #1 Reason Why Dating Is So Hard These Days
We've all experienced it: the gut-wrenching pain of a heartbreak and the eventual struggle to understand the dynamics of relationships. In this episode of Habits and Hustle, we dive deep into the intricacies of relationships, discussing everything from the psychology behind relationship patterns to the role of stress, selfishness, and fear of rejection with Jillian Turecki. Jillian enlightened us with her distinctive insights on topics such as the reality of soulmates and the idea that a long-term relationship requires continuous choices. We also took a hard look at trauma bonds, anxious attachment, and the importance of becoming radically self-aware to break destructive cycles. This conversation was not just intellectual but also deeply personal, as it drew from Jillian's experiences and expertise. Finally, we shifted our focus to some of the more nuanced aspects of relationships. We ruminated on gender differences in emotional connections with sex, pondered over the concept of safety for women due to their vulnerability, and tackled the vexing issue of lost attraction in an otherwise fulfilling relationship. Jillian Turecki is a certified relationship coach, teacher and writer who for 20 years has taught others how to transform their relationships with themselves. Under the tutelage of Tony Robbins and world renowned family therapist Cloe Madanes, Jillian is certified by the Robbins Madanes Center for Strategic Intervention. Fueled by an insatiable curiosity about what makes a relationship thrive, Jillian has helped thousands through her teaching and writing revolutionize their relationship with themselves so that they transform their relationships with others. What we discuss: (0:00:01) - How did Jillian becoming a relationship coach? (0:11:02) - Are our relationship expectations realistic or selfish? (0:22:47) - How to break bad relationship patterns (0:33:35) - Busting myths about relationships (0:40:30) - How important is emotional connection in sex? Key Takeaways: There’s no such thing as one soulmate. People come into our lives for various reasons and not everyone who feels like a soulmate is. Not everything is meant to be a life story. Some people come into our lives to wake us up. Some people come into our lives to help us through a period of time. Some people come into our lives to show us some adventure. If you lose attraction towards a partner, you have to understand why. A couple can bring it back if they understand the why and they work on the why. And especially if there was once a lot of attraction in the beginning. It is something that typically can be resurrected as long as the other things are sort of rectified and worked on. We learn about our attachment styles and we learn about what we're experiencing on the attachment spectrum, based on who we are relating to. And it's also very dependent on what else is going on in our lives. For example, if we're going through a very difficult time in our lives, we might become more anxiously attached to someone because we think on a subconscious level that this person is going to rescue us and is going to make it all better. S1 Ep 253Episode 253: ALOK: How to Be Authentically You in A World Full of Fakes
Do you ever wonder why society hates people who live authentically? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with ALOK about their observations on what happens to us when we aren’t living authentically, what happens when we finally start living authentically, and what kind of reactions we may provoke from society…and why those reactions are okay! ALOK also shares their personal experience on how they had internalized feelings of hate towards themselves, how it almost drove them to suicide, and how they were able to come out on the other side. ALOK (they/them) is an internationally acclaimed author, poet, comedian, and public speaker. As a mixed-media artists, their work explores themes of trauma, belonging, and the human condition. What we discuss: 01:53: About Alok 07:29: How was Alok brought up? 11:05: How did Alok start living authentically? 18:20: How can you start living an authentic life? 19:45: Was Alok jealous of other people who came out before them? 23:25: Where do LGBTQ prejudices come from? 40:19: What was Alok’s experience with suicide? 46:55: What does Alok journal about? 54:28: How would Alok call themselves? 01:10:25: Where can you learn more about Alok? Key Takeaways: Most of us feel depressed, anxious, and sad because we are not living authentically. We are living lives that others, whether it be our parents or society, tell us we “should” live. We tend to sacrifice what our truth is and as a result, live a life that is out of alignment with what we truly want and are passionate about. The biggest motivator behind the hate many people who go against the grain is jealousy and envy. When someone sees someone else rejecting what society has forced on them, they express it as anger and hate, but it stems from the feeling of being upset with themselves that they don’t have the same courage as that person to live the life they want. S1 Ep 251Episode 251: Neil deGrasse Tyson: Why Embracing Wonder is Critical For Personal Growth
Do you consider yourself to be curious enough? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, Neil deGrasse Tyson and I explore the importance of retaining our childhood curiosity and how it plays a crucial role in our lives as adults. Neil shares his insights on nurturing curiosity and how fear of failure can hinder our progress in maintaining that innate sense of wonder. During our conversation, Neil also shares his unique perspective on using pop culture in education, the future of AI, and the complexities of quantum physics and philosophy. As an astrophysicist, Neil brings a cosmic perspective to our discussion, offering wisdom and knowledge that will surely spark your curiosity and ignite your passion for learning. Finally, we touch on the challenges and opportunities in transforming the school system, the role of religion, and even ponder hypothetical conversations with interesting historical figures. Don't miss this captivating episode with the one and only Neil deGrasse Tyson as we explore the universe and beyond together. Neil deGrasse Tyson earned his BA in Physics from Harvard and his PhD in Astrophysics from Columbia. In 2001, Tyson was appointed by President Bush to serve on a twelve-member commission that studied the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry. The final report was published in 2002 and contained recommendations (for Congress and for the major agencies of the government) that would promote a thriving future of transportation, space exploration, and national security. What we discuss: (0:00:01) - How important is it to retaining childhood curiosity and exploration in adulthood? (0:13:08) - What role does pop culture have in education? (0:17:09) - How Neil used Twitter to spark curiosity (0:29:25) - What does Neil think of AI's Future and implicated ethics? (0:38:50) - What do we know to be true in quantum physics and philosophy? (1:04:19) - A discussion about religion, gender, and continuums (1:19:13) - Who would Neil like to have a conversation with if given the opportunity? (1:27:36) - Why you should be Ashamed to die Key Takeaways: Living forever comes with its own set of challenges, including resource conservation, terraforming Mars, and the lack of urgency in life. We explore the concept of 'escape velocity of aging,' where the number of years that passes equals the increase in the average life expectancy of civilization, and how it could lead to humanity living forever. However, living forever comes with a bigger existential problem. See, knowing our mortality gives us meaning to our lives and how living forever could potentially lead to a life with no meaning. Curiosity and exploration are important. However, most parents have a natural instinct to protect their child may prevent them from learning important lessons in life. Think of how a seemingly mundane event such as a child playing with an egg can become an entire conversation about the natural world, and how the cost of ignorance can be more expensive than the cost of education. There are three categories of truth: personal truth, objective truth, and truth that is repeated. We acknowledge personal truths can invoke powerful emotions and even lead to armed conflict. Each one of these truths have their own characteristics that make it true in its own definition. S1 Ep 248Episode 248: 3 Hard Truths About Relationships
Do you have a bit of friction in your relationship? In this solo episode of Habits and Hustle, we share the 3 hard truths about relationships and what these mean for you. Whether it be trying too hard to be liked, agreeing with everything your partner asks from you, or disliking certain qualities in others, these tend to bring up some hard truths about yourself. What we discuss: 01:20: 3 hard truths about relationships 02:06: Does trying too hard make someone else not like you? 05:29: What does the quality you dislike in someone else mean about you? 10:51: Do you need a bit of friction in relationships? 14:39: Can what we dislike change throughout time? Key Takeaways: When you try too hard to be liked by others, you may come off as desperate. This will make it a lot harder for the person you’re trying to impress to like you. If you dislike a quality in someone, it may be because you see it in yourself. Do some self-reflection next time you point something out about your partner. Relationships, where there is little to no friction, don’t work - you can’t always agree on everything at all times and have a really strong bond. What we discuss: 01:27: How connected are the words “hustle” and “confidence”? 03:44: What is Robin’s story? 06:36: How did Robin accomplish everything she did at Peloton? 09:00: What does Robin look for in the people she hires? 10:20: How can you find the inner confidence to change careers? 17:04: Can you teach someone self-belief and confidence? 19:24: Did Robin have an idea of what Peloton would bring to her life? 21:02: How many classes does Robin teach in a day? 21:54: What does a day in life look like for Robin? 25:02: How does Robin get everything done? 26:01: How does Robin decide when she is going to say “no”? 27:55: How does Robin balance her career and personal life? 30:26: What is Robin Web3's project about? 35:56: Does Robin think Web3 will be the next big thing? 36:37: What habits does Robin practice daily? 40:12: What is on Robin’s vision board? Key Takeaways: Learning how to say no is just as important as figuring out what you’re going to say no to. It’s not always a question of “What do I have time for” but also a question of “What do I want to do?” Before you add something to your calendar, it should be something you feel like doing, that you can show up as your best self, and that will help you progress towards the end goal. So if it’s a mediocre “yes”, it’s a no. Nurturing your self-belief and building confidence starts by asking yourself the right questions. When you are honest with yourself and set out what you are capable of, what you can do, and why nothing is stopping you other than your mind, it becomes a lot easier to believe in yourself and move forward. Through the actions you take and the experience you gain, you will eventually build up your confidence. After all, confidence can only be built through action. Your daily habits are how you prime your brain to accomplish everything you have set out for yourself. Because once the brain is set on a goal, the body will follow. So by adopting daily practices like journaling, visualization, and other habits of this sort, you are prepping yourself mentally to go for everything you want in life. S1 Ep 246Episode 246: Do Opposites Really Attract in Relationships?
Do you think opposites attract? In this solo episode of Habits and Hustle, we chat about whether or not opposites really do attract in relationships and whether it’s a good idea or not to be in a relationship with someone who is the total opposite of you. The reality is, similarities between personalities and values are key to a long-lasting relationship. What we discuss: 01:32: Do opposites attract? 02:26: Do personalities have to be opposites? 08:10: What does the research say on whether opposites attract or not? 14:11: Is it possible for love to slowly grow over time? Key Takeaways: While many people may be looking for opposites in potential partners to complement their personalities, it could be a better idea to look for similarities. Your partner’s values must align with your own. This is not something you can compromise on nor would it be a good idea to look for someone with opposite values as yours. S1 Ep 243Episode 243: Vani Hari: How to Stop Food Lies and Fight Food Corruption
Do you really believe that cardiologists recommend Cheerios? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Vani Hari about the lies that multi-billion dollar industries are feeding us every day when it comes to our foods. From misleading statements to paying for health associations to give their seal of approval for their products, the corruption in the food industry is enormous. Vani explains how it’s up to you to watch out for yourself and make informed decisions when buying food for your family. Not only does she provides tips on how you can do that, but she also shares some of the corruption she witnessed first-hand. Vani Hari is an activist that lives in North Carolina and the author of the new book, The Food Babe Way, which guides 21 essential habits she taught herself to take control of her health. What we discuss: 01:17: How did Vani get started in the food industry? 12:03: How did Vani monetize her blog? 14:43: Who are Vani’s business partners? 19:27: What’s happening in the food industry? 24:38: Do health associations care about our health? 26:57: What is the three questions detox? 34:26: What is the difference between organic and grass-fed? 36:24: What buzzwords do you need to watch out for? 38:10: Why are American companies using better ingredients for overseas consumption but not in the United States? 46:18: How do Vani’s kids eat? 53:00: How can you eat healthy when you’re out and about? 56:47: Where can you find Truvani products? Key takeaways: Our food is corrupted in America. Most of the labels we see on our foods aren’t worth much - they’re pay to play and multi-billion dollar companies have the money to play. For example. health associations are putting their stamps of approval on products in exchange for a large cheque. As a result, these companies are playing with our health as we trust these indications on food packaging as telling the quality of a product we are buying. We need to inform ourselves about what these companies are putting in our food so we can make better decisions at the grocery store. Most food companies in the United States are purposely feeding Americans lower-quality foods using lower-quality ingredients, simply because they can and the regulations allow them to. But when it comes to expanding overseas, these same companies have no issue using better quality ingredients to serve those populations to comply with their regulations over food. Thus, these companies do have the “winning recipe” for making better quality foods here in America but chose not to. You can’t take anything for face value when you’re reading marketing statements on a product’s packaging. Many of these statements can be manipulated to make you believe that products are a lot healthier for you than they are. This is why learning how to read labels and researching what some of the added ingredients are is your best bet for buying foods that aren’t harmful to your health. S1 Ep 241Episode 241: Darin Olien: The Invisible Fatal Conveniences You Need to Know About
What do you think is more dangerous: breathing in smog or flossing your teeth? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Darin Olien about the invisible fatal conveniences we use and do every day. The world we live in makes us believe we have to but in reality, these conveniences are harming us and the planet. Darin stresses how important it is to take our health into our own hands, do our own research and due diligence, and make decisions for our health. One should never trust companies to do what’s in our best interest. And the same goes for government agencies, like the FDA, that we think are there to protect us: they aren’t. Darin Olien is co-host of the Emmy™ Award Winning, #1 Netflix docu-series, Down to Earth with Zac Efron. He has spent nearly 20 years exploring the planet discovering new and underutilized exotic foods and medicinal plants as a Superfood hunter Darin developed, Shakeology. He is also the founder of Barukas™, the most nutrient-dense nut in the world coming from the Savannah “Cerrado” of Brazil. As host of the widely popular podcast The Darin Olien Show, Darin curiously explores people, solutions, and health as well as life’s Fatal Conveniences™ – a segment of the show uncovering modern-day flaws and challenges that may be undermining our health and our environment. What we discuss: 01:12: What motivated Darin to write his latest book? 09:32: How bad are EMFs for our health? 10:25: What do AirPods do to your health? 24:59: Does airplane mode make your phone safer to look around for you? 26:25: Are our gadgets causing cancer? 27:45: What’s the solution to tracking your health? 30:53: Are the TSA scanners dangerous? 35:53: Is spandex safe? 39:22: Is cotton safer than polyester? 49:16: What is the most shocking fatal convenience? 54:35: How can we learn more about which products are dangerous? 59:10: How sensitive was Darin’s dad to chemicals? 1:02:55: What are the symptoms that you are over-exposed to chemicals? 1:06:33: Is aging cream doing what it claims to do? 1:10:34: How can you turn a fatal convenience into a healthy convenience? 1:12:36: What are the benefits of Barukas nuts? 1:16:19: How is Shakeology different from other brands? 1:20:07: What is Darin’s morning routine? Key takeaways: When it comes to your health, you cannot under any circumstance trust companies to do what’s in your best interest. And the same goes for government agencies, like the FDA, that we think are there to protect us: they aren’t. You need to take your health into your own hands, do your own research and due diligence, and make decisions for your health. Most fatal conveniences that are in our food can easily be avoided with one simple solution: grow your food. Not only is the produce that you grow yourself best for you, but they eventually become more convenient to eat than to go to the supermarket and picking out supposedly “fresh” produce. Most of the pains, aches, and illnesses we are experiencing are symptoms of over-exposure to chemicals and pollutants. When you start feeling anything other than healthy, it’s a sign that you need to change your lifestyle and be more careful of what it is you ingest, breathe in, and wear. S1 Ep 238Episode 238: Can You Really Manifest Your Way To Success?
Do you believe in manifestation? In this solo episode of Habits and Hustle, we chat about how some components of manifestation are helpful in one’s self-development journey, while others are detrimental. Too many people fall into the trap of believing that their thoughts alone can bring them riches - but the reality is that thoughts don’t do the work for you - only you can. What we discuss: 01:28: Does manifestation work? 03:58: Do we overestimate how much control we have? 08:24: Is manifesting self-care? 10:02: Is the coaching industry giving manifesting a bad wrap? 14:40: How can you avoid getting scammed by a coach in this industry? Key takeaways: There is value in visualizing yourself achieving success, but these thoughts are not enough to experience success in real life. You must put in the work and take action. Manifestation has become an industry of its own, where coaches have taken over and are preying on people who may want to believe that their thoughts alone can give them everything they desire. Manifestation discards the fact that you are never 100% in control of external factors. The reality is that certain things are far beyond your control and you can’t manifest your way out of it. Episode 237: All Day Running Co.: The Mindset, Lessons, and Benefits Of Biking 3,000 Miles Across America
Would you embark on a 3,000 miles biking journey across America if you were asked to, right now?! In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Jesse Itzler and his crew about the 3,000 miles journey across America they are about to embark on to donate bikes to youth. We discuss what mindset they have about this physically tiring journey, what the mental and physical training for such a challenge is like, and how they prepare for such a big challenge ahead of time. Jesse also shares how he selected this year’s team and what every member of this team believes they will gain from accomplishing this cross-country biking challenge. What we discuss: 04:27: Why did Jesse want to start this? 07:08: What is everyone’s background? 10:54: What does the training for this type of sport look like? 14:42: What happens if someone needs a break? 16:23: What happens if the weather isn’t in their favor? 18:43: How is nutrition during a challenge like this? 23:17: What are the benefits of these types of challenges? 27:41: How much support does everyone have from their significant other? 30:29: How does one enter the flow state in a challenge like this? 32:35: How did Jesse select his teammates? 42:06: What are the craziest things this team has done? 45:59: What will they do with the footage they get from this challenge? 47:40: How many hours per day do they expect to be on the bike? 48:05: What other things are on their bucket list? Key takeaways: It’s important to spend time with people who are different from you. Different ages, careers, industries, values, and situations expose you to new realities and wisdom you would never have known of before. An even better way to spend time with people who are different from you is during a challenging time; they will expose you to new perspectives you may have never thought of before. Forcing yourself to take on new challenges that are beyond your comfort zone is what will allow your brain to expand and propel your growth. Working towards a common goal as a team is what will allow you to get to the finish line. Sometimes, not everyone can pull their equal weight at the same time and that’s part of the game. As long as you all support yourselves in working towards that same goal, you’re set for success. S1 Ep 235Episode 235: Bob Does Sports: How He Went From Four Seasons Doorman To Multi-Millionaire Content Creator
Would you ever take the chance of faking a sponsorship? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I sit down with Robby Berger, also known as Bob Does Sports, and chat about his journey from being a doorman at The Four Seasons Hotel to being a multi-millionaire content creator. In just a little over two years, Bob has built up an enormous following through different platforms and gigs, such as Bob Does Sports and The Brilliantly Dumb Podcast. He shares with us how he got Yamaha to be his first podcast sponsor, how much money he makes from sponsorships, and how he built a team from scratch. Bob also shares what his morning routine is like and why he believes his audience got so engaged with his content so quickly in the game. Robby Berger is a podcast host known as the personality "Bobby Fairways" that hosts both the podcast The Brilliantly Dumb Show, and its offshoot show, Bob Does Sports, which is popular on Instagram. Both shows focus on comedy and his fandom for sports, mostly the sport of golf. What we discuss: 00:28: About Bob 05:18: Why did Bob get a job at The Four Seasons? 15:31: When did Bob quit The Four Seasons? 18:55: Who was Bob’s first sponsor? 24:40: Who was Joey cold-cuts? 29:28: How did Bob grow his audience? 38:21: What did Bob do when he stopped getting paid? 44:01: What happened when Bob started filming golf content? 45:15: Who’s idea was Breezy Golf? 49:17: How much money is Bob making? 54:16: Who is Bob’s manager? 55:29: What is Bob’s sponsorship pricing? 59:20: Is it a real golf tournament that Bob is a part of? 01:04:04: What ownership does Bob have in these different businesses? 01:07:13: Why did Bob break up with his girlfriend? 01:13:42: What deals does Bob have going on right now? 01:18:26: Where are Bob’s favorite bagels from? 01:20:54: What is Bob’s morning routine? 01:27:56: How did Bob’s audience get so engaged? 01:29:17: What food does Bob eat? 01:46:52: Where to learn more about Bob? Key Takeaways: Sometimes you have to fake it until you make it if you want to experience success. While Bob Does Sports has a huge audience and plenty of major sponsors today, he started by faking a year-long sponsorship with Windex to lure potential sponsors in. This allowed him to play his cards right and lock down his first real sponsor, Yamaha. Building a team that cares as much about the business as you do is the key to building something big and worthwhile. In Bob’s experience, he once reached a point where he had no money to pay his editor and he continued to support his content and work for free because he believed in Bob. If it weren’t for his editor, he wouldn’t have the massive audience and success he has today. Monetizing your audience is something you should look at like any other type of business. There is more than just one way you can generate revenue and it’s certainly not good practice to rely on one source of revenue. In Bob’s case, he makes money through Cameo videos, sponsorships, ads, and merch, and eventually built a Golfing brand. Episode 231: Ozan Varol: How to Stop Overthinking and Start Quitting
How much do you get done when you’re multi-tasking? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Ozan Varol about the importance of staying focused on only one thing at a time to maximize productivity, how to stop overthinking, and why we need to learn how to quit. He also shares the importance of taking some time to do nothing, such as staring out a window. Oftentimes, sitting with your thoughts is more productive than answering emails. Ozan Varol is a rocket scientist turned award-winning professor, #1 bestselling author, and internationally acclaimed speaker. He is one of the world’s foremost experts in creativity, innovation, and critical thinking. He helps industry-leading organizations reimagine the status quo with moonshot thinking. What we discuss: 02:03: What does it mean to escape conformity? 04:10: Why should we unlearn the habits we have picked up? 08:44: Why should you stop multi-tasking? 11:43: What’s the tinfoil-wrapped chocolate theory? 15:18: What is Ozan’s villain story? 17:22: What made Ozan want to write a book about nonconformity? 21:26: Can quitting be the solution? 24:54: Is persistence always the answer? 25:21: Where can you find the courage to quit? 28:51: Why are you still doing things the same way? 34:12: What are the adverse reactions to meditations? 39:01: What about Ozan doesn’t fit into the bucket of being a rocket scientist? 43:18: How can we stop overthinking? 46:26: How can we become more resilient? 52:26: What’s the worst piece of advice that Ozan has received? 55:26: What is a brain attic? 01:01:22: Why you should stop calling your office “the office”? Key Takeaways: Experimenting beats overthinking every single time. Oftentimes, we spend a lot of time thinking about the plan for a new project we want to work on. The problem with that is we often get stuck in this stage, as it gives us the illusion we’re making progress when in reality, we’ve made no progress at all. That’s why it’s important that you skip the overthinking and overplanning stage and instead, experiment. By taking action, you learn quickly enough the things you’ve been trying to find out by “thinking” and can adapt quicker. Knowing when to quit is just as important as knowing when you need to keep pushing. Sometimes, the job you have isn’t cutting it anymore, and quitting it is what will bring you to your next level. In other cases, your business may feel impossible to break even but you need to keep pushing. Whatever it is you are doing or want to accomplish, it’s important you know how to quit and put your foot on the pedal. Most of the habits we have picked up were habits created by other people who ingrained them into us. They thought for us, and we simply take on what they pass on without questioning it. However, that’s no way to live through life as a life of conformity is in no way a fruitful one. You are meant to use your thinking skills to ideate a life you want for yourself and put it into play. S1 Ep 230Episode 230: Self-Rejection: What It Is and How To Overcome It
Are you rejecting yourself before anyone else has the chance to? In this solo episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with you about self-rejection. I go over what it means, why we do it, what are some of the symptoms you are self-rejecting, and what you can do to overcome it. I also explain the difference between self-rejection and self-sabotage. What we discuss: 01:04: What is self-rejection? 03:51: Self-rejection vs Self-sabotage: what’s the difference? 06:46: How to overcome self-rejection Key takeaways: Self-rejection is when you reject yourself first, to avoid others rejecting you. When you self-reject, you put more value on others' thoughts and opinions than your own opinion of yourself. Symptoms of self-rejection tend to evolve around self-punitive habits such as turning down or not accepting compliments, turning down opportunities you are being presented with, and bringing other people down based on things you see in yourself. To overcome self-rejection, you must replace a bad habit with a good one. This means learning how to accept compliments, learning how to become less judgemental of others and yourself, and taking a chance on yourself when presented with great opportunities. S1 Ep 227Episode 229: David Nurse: How to Identify Your Action Archetypes
What we discuss: 00:34: About David 03:06: What is an action archetype? 05:11: Can we fit into more than one archetype? 07:43: How can you overcome fear? 09:11: How can being a comedian help you overcome fear? 10:41: What is the burn archetype? 12:14: What happens if you don’t become aware of your past burns? 13:56: What do your pressure points say about your emotions? 16:18: What is the inopportune archetype? 18:19: How can you get over this inopportune feeling? 20:44: What is self-efficacy? 26:22: How did David become a coach? 29:05: What does it take to be an NBA coach? 39:32: What role does ego play in people giving you a chance? 42:12: Which players did David work with? 45:38: How much do coaches in the NBA make? 48:36: Did David’s uncle help him get involved with the Raptors? 51:50: What is the perfectionist archetype? 53:45: How can you get over perfectionism? 01:03:10: Where can you learn more about David? Key Takeaways: When we fail to take action, it’s usually due to some type of fear that is holding us back. David Nurse explains how we classify these types of fears by something he calls “action archetypes”. Some of us fall into the perfectionist archetype, where we don’t take action unless we feel everything is perfect. Other people fall into the inopportune archetype, where we feel like we can’t take action because it’s not the right time and/or right conditions. Whichever archetype you fall into, it’s crucial to become aware of it so you can get yourself out of it and start taking action. To overcome fear, you need to look at yourself from a different point of view other than the one where you have access to your internal thoughts. David’s advice is to look at yourself as a comedy show. What he means here is to take a step back when you’re experiencing fear to observe yourself. Go from being the actor in the comedy show to being the viewer. When you do this, don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself. This will help you put in perspective how your fears may be irrational and that you’re capable of getting through them. It’s great to have confidence in yourself and a high level of self-esteem, but it’s not enough to have one or the other. What you need is to have both of these traits and then combine them with action. It’s through having high levels of confidence, and self-esteem, and taking action that you develop self-efficacy. S1 Ep 228Episode 228: Decoding Trendy Slang Words
Do you know what it means to have drip? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, we go through a list of slang terms used by Gen Z in every day life and on social media. We go through what these slang terms mean, how to use them in a sentence, and where they originate from. What we discuss: 01:17: What does “drip” mean? 02:25: What does “extra” mean? 03:31: What does “it is giving” means? 05:51: What does “rizz” mean? 06:44: What does “ touch grass” mean? 07:17: What are the top 10 slang words? 09:10: What is a “simp”? Takeaways: Many of the slang words young people are using these days are borrowed from other languages, other cultures, and other countries. Examples include British terms such as “lads” as a synonym to men and “ savage” from Black culture to describe someone who is not holding back. Slang words come in and out of style every few months. This cycle is further sped-up due to the speed at which social media distributes the new terms, making adoption of these terms a lot faster. S1 Ep 227Episode 227: Dr. Will Cole: How to Heal Shame-flammation
Did you know feelings of shame can physically appear in your body? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Dr. Will Cole about shame-flammation. Given that your body is a cellular library of the thoughts, emotions, and traumas you live, these cells can deeply impact your health and express themselves through autoimmune and metabolic issues. We also chat about the different supplements you can take to support your nervous system, and gut health, and reduce inflammation. What we discuss: 01:33: Will’s latest books 04:18: Why is gut health not adopted by modern medicine? 06:37: What are the root causes of chronic illnesses? 09:49: What illnesses correlate with shame? 12:28: What is shame-flammation? 14:10: How can you heal your shame? 19:37: How can you support your vagal tone? 26:29: How can people who are Type A appease their vagal nerve? 29:16: What other ways can you heal your feelings? 36:30: What are the symptoms of gut health issues? 38:19: Does inflammation cause depression? 41:13: What are the symptoms of IBS? 45:09: How do probiotics help with gut health? 50:40: What is the issue with magnesium? 51:30: What other supplements should you take? 55:04: Is ashwagandha necessary for our nervous system? 57:25: How does basil enhance your health? 1:00:03: Can we become allergic to foods we often eat? 01:03:33: What’s the difference between allergies and intolerance? 01:04:27: What are the signs you have a dysregulated system? 01:06:59: Where can you learn more about Dr. Will? The reason why these strong feelings of guilt and shame cause inflammation is that our body is composed of millions of cells, which all carry the weight of our thoughts and our emotions. When we constantly feel these negative emotions, our cells build up a library of these negative thoughts. As a result, our negative emotions make us physically ill through inflammation as this library becomes the make-up of our bodies. Most of the imbalances that we experience in our body, such as hormonal imbalances, are a symptom of an imbalance in our gut microbiome. When we constantly feed ourselves the wrong things, whether they be food or thoughts, our gut’s health deteriorates, which in turn can make us develop mental health issues such as anxiety and depression that are difficult to treat. Dysregulation in our body manifests its way through different physical signs and emotional signs. To regain control over this dysregulation from an emotional perspective, it’s important to focus on supporting your vagus tone. What you want to do is to find a meditation type that works for you and your lifestyle and stick to it to bring your body back to a parasympathetic state. Once you learn to appease your mind, you learn to appease your gut and reduce inflammation in your body.
