A Cape Town cycling community is waiting for updates after a serious crash on Victoria Road left 61-year-old cyclist Landon Lagrange critically injured. Speaking to Lester Kiewit, Neil Robinson, CEO of the Pedal Power Association, said Lagrange was airlifted to hospital following a collision with a minibus taxi and remains in a critical but stable condition. Robinson noted that fellow cyclists administered immediate medical assistance at the scene, which may have helped save his life. As thousands of holidaymakers made their way back to the Western Cape following the long weekend, Provincial MEC for Mobility Isaac Seleko says traffic volumes surged from as early as Sunday night, with major routes like the N1 seeing a steady influx of vehicles from the Eastern Cape and inland regions. Speaking to Lester Kiewit, Seleko highlighted congestion through key points such as the Huguenot Tunnel, alongside ongoing roadside operations aimed at improving safety. While there was a visible increase in law enforcement presence, concerns remain around reckless overtaking, unroadworthy vehicles, and a persistent number of motorists driving under the influence. Seleko reiterated support for a zero-tolerance approach to alcohol on the roads but stressed that enforcement and public cooperation are critical. He also noted challenges in identifying new vehicles without permanent licence plates, although temporary registrations can still be verified when stopped. Nicky Heyburgh is living testament to the amazing services offered by the SA Red Cross Air Mercy Service (AMS). Along with her partner Neil Dallas, the couple were on individual motorbikes and had just started on a 30-day trip across South Africa when Nicky suffered a nasty accident along a remote stretch of the R355 dirt road in Tankwa. Thanks to the swift response of the AMS, Heyburgh was airlifted and taken to Vincent-Pallotti hospital in Cape Town.
