S1 Ep 61Episode 61 - Amazing Grace
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Titus 2:11-15. In this passage, the apostle Paul highlighted the grace of God that has brought salvation. Not only does everyone have an opportunity to know Jesus, but salvation was also bought so that all could experience God's grace and mercy in their lives. This salvation teaches us some important things about how we should live our lives. We learn from this lesson that salvation gives us hope for the glorious appearing of Jesus Christ. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 3 of The Living Word, Summer 2021, entitled, "Amazing Grace" (June 20, 2021). S1 Ep 60Episode 60 - Rightly Dividing the Word
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at 2 Timothy 2:14-19. Here Paul exhorts Timothy to value truth and study God's Word in order to be able to not only understand what is truth but to be able to skillfully and clearly communicate truth to others. God's Word is truth and is the foundation upon which believers must stand. If we err from the truth, not only will we fall away, but our erroneous teachings will cause others to fall away also. We learn from this lesson that to know Jesus in His fulness, we should be diligent in studying God's Word. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 2 of The Living Word, Summer 2021, entitled, "Rightly Dividing the Word" (June 13, 2021). S1 Ep 59Episode 59 - Without Controversy
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at passages from Isaiah and 1 Timothy; passages that highlight the identity of Jesus Christ. Isaiah declares His name to be called Immanuel, Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 7:14; 9:6). In 1 Timothy, Paul tells Timothy about the mystery of godliness. But what is this mystery? It may not be what you think. We learn from this lesson that Jesus' identity is without controversy in the Apostolic church. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 1 of The Living Word, Summer 2021, entitled, "Without Controversy" (June 6, 2021). S1 Ep 58Episode 58 - We Need the Lord
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Obadiah 1:1-4, 17-21. Here we find the prophet Obadiah pronouncing judgment on Edom, the descendants of Esau. The story of Esau is one of a man who never valued the things of God. He sold his birthright for a bowl of soup; a birthright that included spiritual promises that had been made to his grandfather Abraham and his father Isaac. Pride was the hallmark of Esau and his descendants. Pride pushes God out of our lives, while humility invites God in. We learn from this lesson that God will bless those who recognize their need of Him and pursue Him.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 13 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "We Need the Lord" (May 30, 2021). S1 Ep 57Episode 57 - Faithful to Forgive
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Hosea 14:1-9. Here we find the prophet Hosea communicating God's desire for Israel to return to the Lord. Hosea's marriage to Gomer became a "living parable," illustrating the unconditional love God has for His people. As Hosea said, God promised to "love them freely." We learn from this lesson that God is faithful to forgive and restore those who turn to Him.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 12 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Faithful to Forgive" (May 23, 2021). S1 Ep 56Episode 56 - Great Mercy
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Jonah 4:1-11. This passage picks up the story of Jonah immediately after the prophet has preached to the wicked city of Nineveh. Unfortunately, Jonah is angry with God because Jonah knows God is going to show mercy on the Ninevites, the enemies of Israel. Jonah is ok with God showing mercy on him and his people, but he just can't handle the idea of his enemies experiencing God's mercy. We learn from this lesson that we must not begrudge God for showing mercy on others because we need God's mercy at all times. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 11 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Great Mercy" (May 16, 2021). Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Amos 3:1-7. In this passage, the prophet Amos is addressing the Children of Israel and warning them of coming judgment because of their sins. He reminds them that every choice has its consequences and sin brings judgment. However, the hope in this passage is found in the fact that God speaks through His prophets in order to bring warning so that HIs people turn to the Lord in repentance. We learn from this lesson that we must heed the preached Word of God.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 10 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "The Prophetic Voice" (May 9, 2021). S1 Ep 54Episode 54 - Open the Door
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 3:14-22. In this passage, the Lord addresses the church in Laodicea. Immediately the Lord shows His displeasure because the church at Laodicea has become blinded by worldly pursuits and does not recognize the error of their ways. Yet through His loving rebuke, the Lord patiently calls for them to repent. His love is depicted through a word picture describing Him standing at the door at knocking; simply showing His desire to come in to them and heal their broken relationship with Him. We learn from this lesson that we must open the door of our lives and choose unbroken fellowship with Jesus. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 9 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Open the Door" (May 2, 2021). S1 Ep 53Episode 53 - His Strength Is Perfect
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at II Corinthians 12:9 and Revelation 3:7-13. In Revelation 3:7-13, the Lord addresses the church in Philadelphia. They are commended for their works and God tells them He has set before them an open door. Additionally, He mentions that they have "little strength." However, we find out that it is ok to have little strength. In fact, God does well working with people who have little strength. We learn from this lesson that if we will endure, the Lord will be our strength and help. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 8 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "His Strength Is Perfect" (April 25, 2021). S1 Ep 52Episode 52 - Awake
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Romans 13:11-12, Ephesians 5:14, and Revelation 3:1-6. These passages reveal three different themes we discuss in this episode: 1. Being Awake, 2. Being Watchful, and 3. Being Clothed in White. It is interesting to compare the similarities between being asleep physically and asleep spiritually. Why should we stir ourselves to be awake? Why should we be watchful? Truly our spiritual survival is at stake because our adversary does his best to seek out the vulnerable. We learn from this lesson that we must stay awake and watchful in order to overcome the enemy of our souls. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 7 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Awake" (April 18, 2021). S1 Ep 51Episode 51 - Overcomers
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 2:18-29. In this passage, the Lord speaks to the church at Thyatira. He commends them for their works, faith, and patience, but calls them out on their tolerance of an evil prophetess named Jezebel. Though the Lord had given her a space to repent, this woman refused and is now facing judgment. The Lord's plea with the church at Thyatira is to remove themselves from this evil influence and seek forgiveness. God in His mercy always gives us a "space" to repent and we must take advantage of that moment by seeking the Lord while He may be found. We learn from this lesson that we must overcome sin instead of trying to live with it.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 6 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Overcomers" (April 11, 2021). S1 Ep 50Episode 50 - When Fear and Joy Collide
Send us Fan MailHappy Easter! This episode looks at Matthew 28:1-9. In this passage, we find Mary Magdalene and "the other" Mary (Matt 28:1) on their way to the tomb where Jesus had been placed. But while they were coming, a great earthquake shook the ground. An angel descended and rolled the stone away, and the soldiers guarding the tomb fainted, or as the Bible says, they "did shake, and became as dead men." Upon hearing the news of Jesus' resurrection, the women left to tell the disciples what had happened. And when they left, we are told they departed "with fear and great joy." How can these two things co-exist? We talk about that on this episode. We learn from this lesson that if we will press on through fear, joy will win in the end.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 5 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "When Fear and Joy Collide" (April 4, 2021). S1 Ep 49Episode 49 - Cling to Righteousness
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 2:12-18. In this passage, the Lord addressed the church of Pergamos. Pergamos was an idolatrous city and housed a place the Lord referred to as "Satan's Seat." And in the midst of such a wicked city, God still had a church that remained faithful. However, the Lord called them to repentance because of some inconsistencies. This was so that they could serve God more faithfully and as the lesson declares, so they could "Cling to Righteousness." We learn from this lesson that we must cling to righteousness no matter the evil influence around us.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 4 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Cling to Righteousness" (March 28, 2021). S1 Ep 48Episode 48 - Faithful in Persecution
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 2:8-11. In this passage, the Lord addressed the church of Smyrna. The city of Smyrna was hostile toward Christians and the Lord mentions the persecution they have been and will be facing. He then encourages them with two important admonitions, both of which we should take note of: 1. Fear none of those things and 2. Be thou faithful. This podcast discusses these admonitions. We learn from this lesson that we must remain faithful no matter the persecution we face. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 3 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Faithful in Persecution" (March 21, 2021). S1 Ep 47Episode 47 - Your First Love
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 2:1-7. In this passage, the Lord addressed the church of Ephesus. He commended them for several things including their commitment to working for the Lord, their labor, their patience, and the fact that they had refused to tolerate sin and wickedness. However, one thing He did have "against" them: they had left their first love. This episode looks at what that means and how we can apply this understanding to our lives this week. We learn from this lesson that we must stay focused on our first love, Jesus Christ. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 2 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Your First Love" (March 14, 2021). S1 Ep 46Episode 46 - Alpha and Omega
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Revelation 1:8-18. In this passage, the apostle John has been exiled to an island called Patmos where he receives a revelation of Jesus Christ (where we get the title of this book of the Bible). However, this Revelation of Jesus Christ was much different than the revelation he received of Jesus when he followed Him decades earlier. He had seen Jesus heal, cast out demons, and even saw evidence of His resurrection. But this encounter would be one that actually left him breathless and speechless. We learn from this lesson that the Revelation of Jesus Christ should produce awe and wonder in us.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 1 of The Living Word, Spring 2021, entitled, "Alpha and Omega" (March 7, 2021). Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at I John 3:18-24. In this passage, the apostle John exhorts believers to love God and one another; not only in word but also in deed and in truth. In addition, John explores what it feels like to be burdened by condemnation. However, he offers his readers hope by reminding them that God is greater than their condemnation and that we can have confidence before God. We learn from this lesson that even when our hearts condemn us, we can stand confident in God's love for us.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 13 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Confident in God's Love" (February 28, 2021). S1 Ep 44Episode 44 - Freedom from Fear
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at II Kings 6:8-17 and II Timothy 1:6-7. Second Kings tells us the story of how God kept frustrating the king of Syria because each time the king would plan a move in battle, God would reveal the king's plans to the prophet Elisha. When the king realized what was happening, he sent his army to capture the prophet. While surrounded, Elisha helped his servant to understand God was with them and they did not need to fear. We learn from this lesson that God has given us the power to live without fear. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 12 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Freedom from Fear" (February 21, 2021). Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Ephesians 6:10-13, I Timothy 1:18-19, and I Timothy 6:11-12. The apostle Paul is quick to remind both the Ephesian church and Timothy of the fact that we are at war. No, we do not fight against flesh and blood, but we daily battle against spiritual wickedness all around us. However, we have been made more than conquerors through Jesus Christ and He has provided us the weapons to stand against the enemy. We learn from this lesson that we must remember we are in a battle for our souls, and we must fight the fight of faith every day.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 11 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Fight the Good Fight of Faith" (February 14, 2021). S1 Ep 42Episode 42 - Age Does Not Matter
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Acts 15:36-40, I Timothy 4:12-14, and II Timothy 4:11. In Acts 15 we find the apostle Paul in a heated disagreement with Barnabas, his fellow church-planter. Their disagreement centers on a young man named John Mark. These two missionaries were unable to come to an agreement and the result was they separated from one another and went in different directions. However, Paul's words in II Timothy 4:11 show that eventually Paul found John Mark to be a valuable asset to him and his ministry and he gave the young man a second chance. We learn from this lesson that we must encourage and believe in young people who desire to do the work of God.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 10 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Age Does Not Matter" (February 7, 2021). S1 Ep 41Episode 41 - Sensitive to the Lord
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Acts 28:23-31 and I Timothy 4:1-2. In Acts 28 we find the apostle Paul under house arrest and yet even while incarcerated he preaches to all those who will listen. Though some believed and some did not believe, he still "with all confidence" (v 31), shared the truth of God's Word. The warning surrounding his preaching was that some hearts were closed to the message and did not believe. Paul tells Timothy that similar things will happen in the last days. In fact, Paul says, "some shall depart from the faith . . . having their conscience seared with a hot iron." How important it is for us to keep our hearts turned toward the Lord and His Word. We learn from this lesson that we must stay sensitive to God and His Word. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 9 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Sensitive to the Lord" (January 31, 2021). S1 Ep 40Episode 40 - God Is Always Faithful
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Malachi 1:6-14 and 3:6. The Book of Malachi presents a sobering warning about the corrosive nature of discouragement. The people's disappointment with the outcomes of their best efforts slowly turned into accusations against God. Their disappointment also led them to make excuses for their own unrighteous behavior. To defeat this discouragement they needed only look to God's faithfulness. We must do the same. And when we see God as faithful, we can then seek to make His name great among the unbelievers in the world. We learn from this lesson that continual reminders of God's faithfulness keep spiritual discouragement at bay.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 8 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "God Is Always Faithful" (January 24, 2021). S1 Ep 39Episode 39 - Seeing Beyond the Present
ESend us Fan MailThis episode looks at Zechariah 3:1-10. As a contemporary to the prophet Haggai, Zechariah also prophesies concerning the rebuilding of the Temple. However, in the passage we look at in this episode, not only does Zechariah speak of the rebuilding of the Temple and the re-establishment of proper worship through a righteous priesthood (as he references Joshua, the high priest), but the prophet also causes us to look forward to the coming of the BRANCH, which is Jesus Christ, the Messiah. We learn from this lesson that God gives us visions of the future to encourage us to be faithful in the present. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 7 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "Seeing Beyond the Present" (January 17, 2021). S1 Ep 38Episode 38 - The Work of God
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Haggai 1:2-14. The Book of Haggai chronicles the progress of the Temple-building project. However, King Artaxerxes had issued a royal decree to stop the building, and the Jews stopped--for fifteen years. The foundation lay exposed to the weather for one-and-a-half decades. That is when God inspired the prophet Haggai to prophesy to the people to remind them to finish what they had forgotten. We learn from this lesson that God's Word and work must be our greatest priorities. For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 6 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "The Work of God" (January 10, 2021). S1 Ep 37Episode 37 - God Will Restore
Send us Fan MailThis episode looks at Zephaniah 3:8-13 and Acts 2:1-4. In the Zephaniah passage, we are made acutely aware of the fact God will judge sin. However, the prophet also gives a glimmer of hope because God also seeks to bring restoration. The prophet points to the restoration that will come through the Holy Ghost. Acts 2 tells us of the initial outpouring of the Holy Ghost and gives all of us the hope of restoration we can receive through the power of God's Spirit living inside us. We learn from this lesson that though God judges rebellion and sin, we can find restoration if we turn to Him.For those who use Word Aflame Curriculum, the Bible passage focused on in this episode comes from Lesson 5 of The Living Word, Winter 2020-21, entitled, "God Will Restore" (January 3, 2021).
