Spirituality is based on the possibility to comprehend our true nature, and thereby escape the painful cycles of life, death, evolution, and devolution, the mechanical wheel of nature. By awakening consciousness in the six intermediate states (betweens or bardos) one can transform life and death into vehicles for liberation. To perceive the reality, the Divine, one needs to know how to use the consciousness in a very specific way, a state of consciousness called in various languages Dhyana, Jhana, Ch'an, Zen, or Sampten.
