On Fruitloops Episode 11 Beth and Wendy discuss the life, crimes and victims of Timonthy WIlson Spencer, AKA The Southside Strangler. This case is notable as the first case in the US where DNA was used to convict a serial killer. Timothy Wilson Spencer was convicted of raping and strangling four women over 11 weeks in 1987. There was very little circumstantial evidence and Spencer did not confess. Then DNA tests linked semen from the crime scenes with Spencer's blood. Most of Spencer's victims were killed while he was living at a Richmond halfway house after being released from a state prison, where he had served three years of a 10-year sentence for burglary. The slayings took place on weekends when Mr. Spencer was signed out of the halfway house. Anthony Sowell, AKA The Cleveland Strangler, is an African American serial killer from Cleveland Ohio. He’s known for his “House of Horrors”, where 11 dead bodies were found scattered throughout his home. 11 known murder victims Span of crimes May 2007 to Sept. 2009 in Ohio. Jake Bird AKA The Tacoma Axe Killer was born in Louisiana, in what he described as a town with no post office, and he claimed that he could not remember it. He confessed to being involved in or committing 44 murders. He was apprehended on October 30, 1947 and hanged at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla. Up until the 1970s Bird was considered the most prolific serial killer in the history of the United States. But what he is most known for is his hex. (WTF ???) Chester Dewayne Turner, also known as The Southside Slayer, is an American convicted serial killer. On April 30, 2007, he was convicted of the murders of 10 women in Los Angeles, and was also found guilty in the death of the unborn child of one of his victims. In part 2 of our discussion about America's first black female serial killer, Clementine Barnabet we get into her wild confession, the media coverage and her trial. Her defense attorneys claimed she was insane, but she stood trial, was found guilty of the Randall murders and she was sentenced to life at Louisiana Penitentiary at the age of 19. Clementine Barnabet was sentenced to life in prison at Angola State Penitentiary. In July of 1913, she tried to escape jail but was caught before she even made it to the gate. Despite her escape attempt, she was considered a model prisoner. She didn’t, however, serve very long. In August of 1923, Clementine Barnabet walked out of prison and was never seen or heard from again. Clementine Barnabet has been called the first female African American serial killer. Her case has also been referred to as the "Mulatto Axe Murders" because the victims were murdered by axe and they were members of families with mixed-race children. Mulatto is an antiquated term which was used at the time to describe people of mixed race. The killer was presumed, by blacks and the police alike, to be selecting victims on the basis of their mixed – or “tainted” – blood. This case is also often referred to as "The Voodoo Murders", because of an alleged religious "voodoo" motive. The crimes began in 1909 and ended in 1912. Newspapers attributed up to 35 killings to Clementine, either by her hand or her instruction; she claimed she personally murdered 17 of these. And once again, the murders received little newspaper coverage, and as the years have gone by, few people remember these cases.
