S9 Ep 11Make Art, Make Money

On today’s show I (Preston) have a really great conversation with James O-Reilly, an indie artist who’s working on making the transition from freelancer to founder. James has had heaps of work come in over the last year which is good because he's making good money as an artist, but he’s not exactly sure where to go next with his business. Should he hire more artists? Should he hire a project manager or a sales person? And if he hires now, will work dry up and he’ll be in a bad place financially? In this one-on-one conversation I had with James, I found he was asking all the right questions. And it’s these fantastic questions that lead us on a journey to discovering exactly what James must do next to grow his art business. ========= JOIN OUR FIRST-EVER GROUP CHALLENGE HERE (code 'podcast' to save 30%) It's our 5-Days to Recurring Revenue challenge and it's going to be insanely fun and helpful. S9 Ep 10Working From Anywhere (Remote Works Podcast Sneak Peek)

To listen to more episodes or subscribe to Remote Works, click here. On today's bonus episode, I share with you a fun podcast called 'Remote Work' from the team at Citrix. You know how, before Covid, only a relative few of us knew how great it was to work from anywhere? Well, Remote Works is on a mission to highlight the new ways that millions of people are now working—from wherever they want. Remote Works features stories of digital nomads working from the beach in Barbados, Bali and beyond. But it’s not just stories about remote work on the beach. Each episode is full of insight and advice you can apply to your work and your team. I personally really enjoyed the episode about two women working in a tiny trapper’s cabin in the Arctic and dodging polar bears while fighting climate change. I got a special sneak preview of season 2 of Remote Works, and I’ve been dying to share this episode with you so today, I’ve included, with permission from Remote Works, the full episode for your listening enjoyment. You can search for Remote Works anywhere you get your podcasts and I’ll include a link in the show notes to make it easy. A big thank you to Remote Works for their support of Freelance to Founder. *** This show is a part of the Podglomerate network, a company that produces, distributes, and monetizes podcasts. S9 Ep 7The Truth About Being a ‘Founder’

On today’s episode, we chat with Chase, a co-founder at Electric Eye. They help Direct-to-Consumer Shopify brands make more money. Like Clay and me, Chase started out as a freelancer, but over the last five years he and his business partner have grown their agency to eight employees. In this conversation with Chase, we talk about all the things we three wish we had known about making the transition from freelancer to founder. We cover everything from hiring (of course) to when you should niche, fighting imposter syndrome, onboarding clients, sending client gifts, fixing major screw-ups and more. It’s a jam-packed episode and a must-listen for anyone wanting to know the truth behind what it’s like to go from freelance to founder. ========= JOIN OUR FIRST-EVER GROUP CHALLENGE HERE (code 'podcast' to save 30%) It's our 5-Days to Recurring Revenue challenge and it's going to be insanely fun and helpful. S9 Ep 6Giving Yourself a $40K Raise + Investing in People

On this week’s episode, we check back in with one of our favorite guests from last season: Amy Kuo. Amy’s business is growing well and she even hired her first intern this year. But she still has a lot of questions about hiring and outsourcing. And since Clay and I believe whole-heartedly that people are the best possible investment you can make in your business, we have a lot to say on the subject. If you’ve ever worried about introducing your employees to clients, letting go of important tasks, or if you’ll have enough work to give someone after you hire them, then today’s episode is for you. ========= JOIN OUR FIRST-EVER GROUP CHALLENGE HERE (code 'podcast' to save 30%) It's our 5-Days to Recurring Revenue challenge and it's going to be insanely fun and helpful. S9 Ep 5Attracting the Best Projects

You'll be happier and wealthier if you can learn how to attract the right kinds of freelance jobs in your career. On today’s episode, I’m joined by a special guest coach, my friend Matt Olpinski, as we offer some coaching to Wyatt Hill. Wyatt’s got a really unique situation: his boss allows him to make connections with customers at his day job and then pitch them his side-hustle services. While this setup is incredible, it also has Wyatt a bit worried: as he gets more successful, if he chooses to quit his day job, his client pipeline could dry up. So we spend the bulk of this episode showing Wyatt a few ways to attract the right kinds of projects on his own—without help from his boss. We talk about lots of tactics from SEO, to better contact forms, to online portfolios and Linkedin. With our advice and lots of hard work, Wyatt wants to double his side-hustle revenue next year and we think he can do it. ========= JOIN OUR FIRST-EVER CHALLENGE HERE (code 'podcast' to save 30%) It's our 5-Days to Recurring Revenue challenge and it's going to be insanely fun and helpful. S9 Ep 4Getting Clients to Treat You Like an Agency

On today’s show, I’m joined by a good friend of mine, Chelsea Baldwin as a special guest coach. Together, we coach Australian freelancer-turned-agency-builder Caroline. She has built up a nice freelance business and has begun to work with subcontractors to begin scaling her business. But she’s realizing it’s harder to transition from solo freelancer to full-on agency than she initially expected. Chelsea and I coach her on two critical tasks: How to get her clients to start treating her like an agency—instead of a freelancer. And how to get the word out about her new agency and start bringing in fresh clients even if she doesn’t feel quite ready. We wrap up the episode with some really strong advice from Chelsea on getting new clients with Linkedin. Join us on this jam-packed episode. S9 Ep 2Control Freaks Can Scale Too...Here's How

On today’s show, we have a really great conversation with Natalie, who has built a nice freelance design business but has also encountered some serious trouble when it comes to hiring. And even though Clay and I both know how critical hiring can be to your scaling success, we can also empathize with her feeling like too much of a control freak (her words, not ours) to make the best decision. So how do you start hiring without losing control of the most important aspects of your company? It’s a tough question that we get into on this episode of Freelance to Founder. On today’s episode (the final episode in our eighth season) I want to turn the tables and share with you an interview I did with my friends Marc and Julia at The Clearing. S8 Ep 16Should You Ever Turn Down a New Client?

Do you ever get the feeling you're attracting the wrong kinds of clients for your freelance business or agency? Today's guest faces the same question: "how can I turn down clients who aren't a good fit?" Paul Chris Luke spent his first few years out of college working at an agency doing digital marketing. But then he decided to leave it all behind, sell his house and most of his possessions and move to Cambodia—a place he’d never even been. After taking a year off to reflect on where his life was headed and finding his savings running out, he eventually felt the tug to get some clients and start working again. The problem is: when you start freelancing, it can be hard to find the right clients—or better yet—avoid the wrong ones Now, Paul finds himself wondering how to keep his company small while working with giant brands that want to scale. IN this episode, we answer the question “is it a good idea turn down new clients when your business is so young?" We also talk about growing slowly on purpose, delegating without losing control, naming your business and lots more. I Caught Covid-19 and Lost Half My Business. But Then....

Imagine catching the coronavirus and losing half of your clients in less than 48 hours. That's what happened to today's guest, Jim Huffman. Jim runs GrowthHit, a conversion-focused agency serving tech companies and startups. When Covid-19 hit the U.S. in March of this year, Jim got an email from one of his clients asking to put their work “on hold”—which was all fine and well until another client cut them off….and another… and another. The pandemic had led to Jim’s company losing almost half a million dollars in potential client sales for the year. To top it all off, Jim caught the coronavirus while traveling for work. Not long after, Jim recovered from the illness and his business rebounded from the loss. And in this episode, we peel back exactly how Jim recovered and pull out lessons you can apply to your business as we all cope with Covid together. S8 Ep 13How to Scale When You Feel Too Busy

On today’s episode, we have a great conversation with Will Gibbons—a product rendering expert who works with huge brands like Pelaton, 3M, Vizio and more. After a year of working for himself, Will is facing perhaps one of the best problems you can ask for as a freelancer: He’s got too many client requests coming in and too much work that needs done. So in this episode, Clay and I walk him through a few hiring, scaling, and management tips to help him move up the “freelance to founder” scale without losing control of his business. S8 Ep 12Fixing Awkward Money Conversations w/ Clients

On this week’s episode we have a heart-to-heart chat with Bri Earles, a freelance social media manager and virtual assistant. Bri has never had any trouble getting new social media clients. But whenever Bri thinks about having money conversations or raising her prices, she kinda freezes up—using words like “awkward” “greedy” or “selfish” to explain how she feels about charging clients. What many freelancers like Bri fail to realize is the only way to become comfortable with charging more is to gain confidence about the value you provide. Cold Pitching vs. Content Marketing

On today’s call, we chat with Mihai Zamfir who has done some incredible work in building a presentation design company. Mihai gets a fair amount of new clients using sites like Upwork and other freelance marketplaces, but he’s ready to start finding better clients in more intentional ways. All of this leads us to an answer-rich coaching session all about short-term vs. long-term sales strategies. Cold-pitching vs. Content marketing. On the one hand, cold-pitching is hard and has notoriously bad conversion rates. On the other hand, content marketing is very time and labor intensive. So what’s the right path for you? We’ll help you answer that question and many more in today’s episode. But Rodney, a side-hustler with a full-time job, has been kicking this idea around in his mind for a whopping five years—so in this episode, Clay and Preston call him out. They dive into what’s been holding him up and what it’s really going to look like to build an audience-first business. S8 Ep 6Is Upwork Legit? + What You're Losing by Not Hiring

On today’s show, we have a nice long chat with Carl Smith. He’s been an in-house web developer for the past 20 years, but at the end of 2018, Carl finally launched a small business of his own—L&L Web Consulting. Carl saw some early success on Upwork, but when one client who was taking up 50 hours of his work-week suddenly halted their project, Carl was left wondering if sites like Upwork were the best way to get web design clients. In the first half of today’s episode, we talk all about Upwork—should you be on it? Is it a good long-term strategy? And is it worth your time? Then we round out the show with a great conversation on hiring a marketing expert, When is the right time to hire? How can you find the right person? And ideas for what to do if you literally have no budget for hiring but desperately need help. S8 Ep 5Why You're Failing at "Finding a Niche"

On today’s episode, we sit down with Margaret Ryland, a brand and identity designer who started her own design business not very long ago. Margaret is working hard trying to figure out exactly what kind of client to target which has left her listening to and reading a lot of advice about finding your freelance niche. Advice to "find your niche" in business is not uncommon on the Internet—you’ve probably seen it yourself. We've even published our own articles about it. But Clay and I worry that Margaret is rushing into niching down a little too fast. So in today’s conversation, we dissect why “find your niche” really isn’t all it’s cracked up to be—and what freelancers should be doing instead. We also talk about demanding full creative control from clients, ditching proposals, listing prices on your website, weeding out high-maintenance clients and lots more. S8 Ep 4Building a Business vs. Creating Another Job

Too many freelancers never actually build a business that works for them. Instead, they just build another job for themselves—trading one annoying boss for a dozen high-maintenance clients. Eesh. In today's episode, we sit down with Bobby Macey, founder of Macey Media. After side-hustling through a series of frustrating lay-offs, Bobby finally decided to take matters into his own hands and start a content agency. He’s doing a lot of things right and his business is growing fast. But Bobby still finds himself doing a lot of the client work he books—leaving him with late nights on his laptop and a work-life balance that’s a bit uneven. In today’s show, Clay and I share what we’ve learned about work-life balance and help Bobby answer important questions about when to hire and who to hire to best scale his business and rescue some of his personal life.
