This past year was another stellar year for the podcast. I aired 260 episodes, mainly interviews with famous and amazing musicians and other creatives, but also Special Episodes featuring my new musical works, tribute episodes, and Encore episodes.As I’ve done in the past, I’ve put together a Highlights Show featuring some of the best excerpts from ten of the episodes. Ann Hampton Callaway is one of the greatest stars of Broadway, Television, concerts and recording. Among her many other accomplishments she wrote and sang the theme song to “The Nanny” TV show. She talks about getting that assignment. Michael Shrieve was the longtime drummer for Santana, one of the greatest bands of the modern era. They were one of the biggest stars of Woodstock, and Michael’s drum solo in “Soul Sacrifice” literally stole the show. He talks about the rumor that the band was high on psychedelics during that memorable performance. Arturo Sandoval is one of the greatest jazz trumpeters of all time. He grew up in Cuba and had to defect to come to the U.S. He talks about how Dizzy Gillespie was instrumental in getting him and his bandmates out of Cuba and their first gig in the U.S. Jeffrey Biegel is an acclaimed Grammy winning concert pianist. He’s a good friend of Neil Sedaka, the legendary pop star and composer. He tells the story about how Neil informed his piano teacher at Juilliard about his first pop hit. Dave Eggar is a 5x Grammy nominated rock star cellist who played on Coldplay’s massive hit, “Viva La Vida”. He tells the story about meeting Chris Martin of Coldplay for the first time. Giora Schmidt is a virtuoso American-Israeli violinist. He tells the story of what happened when he flew on a commuter plane and there was no room in the overhead for his very expensive concert violin. Ivor Davis is a renowned journalist, investigative reporter and author. He tells what it was like to travel with and cover The Beatles on their 1964 tour of America. Benny Benack III is a spectacular young trumpet player and vocalist who has performed all over the world. He tells about playing wedding gigs when he was first starting out. Lucy Kaplansky is a folk music star and singer-songwriter. She talks about her loyal fans and their demographic. Billy Cobham is one of the greatest drummers of the modern era. He played in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, one of the most heralded bands of the jazz fusion era. He talks about the band’s first gig. So that’s it. Our 2025 Highlights Show. Kavita Shah is an Indian-American award-winning vocalist, composer and polyglot. She’s been hailed by NPR for possessing an “amazing dexterity for musical languages”. Her music covers modern jazz, new music, and her own exploration of folk traditions from Brazil to West Africa to India. Her album “Interplay” was nominated for France’s Victoire de la Musique for Jazz Album of the Year. She regularly performs at major concert halls, festivals, and clubs on six continents. He was the singing voice for the character Shy Baldwin on Amazon's smash hit “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” for three seasons. The New York Times describes him as "An astonishing vocal acrobat combining the timbre of a pure wind instrument with the swinging authority of a jazz powerhouse." He’s performed at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, London's Royal Festival Hall, The Kennedy Center and The Boston Pops. He has performed with artists including Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry, Marvin Hamlisch, Roberta Flack and Vanessa Williams. Lucie Arnaz is a renowned actress, singer, and producer. My guest today is Nigel Pearce, Beatles expert, who previously was a guest on this podcast. The songs you will hear were recorded over the last four nights of their final run in Hamburg at The Star Club. The recordings were made on an amateur tape recorder with one microphone. The tapes were lost for many years, but after they were found the tracks were enhanced using modern technology. They capture the band at a critical juncture, just before they returned to England and then exploded onto the world stage. The songs which were recorded were part of their live set and went on to become famous when they were properly recorded in the studio. Eric Jacobsen is a renowned cellist who is also the Music Director of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. He is known for combining fresh interpretations of traditional works with cutting-edge collaborations across musical genres. If I’ve got this right he’s also the Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and the Principal Guest Conductor of the Classical Tahoe Musical Festival. Eric is also the artistic director and co-founder of The Knights, an adventurous NYC-based chamber orchestra. Their current endeavors include a residency at Carnegie Hall. Dani Howard is originally from Hong Kong but she’s now a renowned British composer and orchestrator. Her works have been performed by the London Symphony, BBC Symphony and Royal Philharmonic among others. She won a Royal Philharmonic Society Award for her Trombone Concerto. Her debut album features the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and trombonist Peter Moore. Dani was Resident Artist with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Shayna Steele is a soul, jazz and blues singer extraordinaire. This woman has done it all. She has performed at major venues all over the world including the Monterey Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival and with a whole bunch of Symphony Orchestras including over 100 North American orchestras. She’s performed with Chris Botti, Moby and Snarky Puppy to name just a few. She has sung on the soundtrack albums for Wicked, Bourne Identity and Sex and the City 2. She made a guest appearance on The Sopranos. She was in the hit musicals RENT and Jesus Christ Superstar, and she played an original roll in Hairspray. She’s done background vocals for Bette Midler, Rihanna, and Kelly Clarkson. Bill Graham and Sid Bernstein were two of the greatest and most important rock music promoters of the 1960s. Bill Graham had two legendary theaters, the Fillmore West in San Francisco and the Fillmore East in New York City. He introduced and cultivated so many of the major stars of the era including Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Country Joe and the Fish, and the Grateful Dead on the west coast, and Blood Sweat & Tears, the Allman Brothers and The Band on the east coast.Sid Bernstein was the promoter who was responsible for The Beatles performing at Shea Stadium in New York City in 1965. He also brought the Stones, the Kinks, the Moody Blues and Herman’s Hermits to America. Will Healy is a pianist and composer who plays multiple genres of music including classical, jazz and hip hop. In 2023 he won the Leonard Bernstein Prize from the ASCAP Foundation. He has performed at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. His arranging credits include works for the New York Philharmonic and the Albany Symphony. He is the artistic director and founder of ShoutHouse, a group of hip-hop, jazz, and classical musicians. As a pianist, he has performed solo recitals in the United States and abroad. He also plays piano and synthesizers in the Pathos Trio, an award-winning metal-influenced chamber group. He is also a founding member of Upstream, a duo with violinist and composer George Meyer. He is also the author of the poetry collections The Ground, Heaven, Living Weapon and When Blackness Rhymes With Blackness. He’s also a sportswriter and he wrote The Circuit: A Tennis Odyssey about the 2017 pro tour, and a book about Roberto Clemente. He is the recipient of an Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He’s the poetry editor of “The New Republic”. And he is a Professor of English at Stony Brook University. Tom Sleigh is a multiple award winning poet, dramatist and essayist. He’s written eleven books of poetry. His most recent is “The King’s Touch”, which won the Paterson Poetry Prize. His other works include “Army Cats”, winner of the John Updike Award, “Space Walk”, winner of the Kingsley Tufts Award, and “Far Side Of The Earth”, which won an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His poems and prose have appeared in The New Yorker, American Poetry Review, Yale Review and The Village Voice. He is a Professor (Emeritus) at Hunter College. And he has also worked as a journalist in Syria, Lebanon, Somalia, Kenya, Iraq, and Libya. Lora Logic is a British punk and post-punk musician. In 1977, when she was 16, she became the saxophonist in Poly Styrene’s seminal English punk band, X-Ray Spex. They had a hit with “Oh Bondage! Up Yours!”. She went on to form Essential Logic, a post-punk band with duelling saxophones that released one album in 1979. 43 years later she released a second Essential Logic album together with a box set of her back catalogue. Essential Logic plays a post-punk mix of punk, jazz, reggae and funk. Her life took a detour in the ‘80s when she joined a Krishna community, became a mother, and dropped out of music for 25 years. He’s the Music Director of Germany’s Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra and Opera, he’s the Principal Guest Conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, and the Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. He also regularly performs with the Munich Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, the Vienna Symphony and the Munich State Opera. Rachel Flowers is an extraordinary musician. She’s been blind practically since birth but that hasn’t held her back one bit. She is an amazing multi-instrumentalist. Her genres include classical, jazz, rock and pop. She plays piano, keyboards, flute, guitar, bass, saxophone and something called the Chapman Stick. She’s performed with Arturo Sandoval, “Skunk” Baxter, Dweezil Zappa, Rik Wakeman of Yes and Burt Bacharach among others. She was mentored by Greg Lake and Keith Emerson of ELP and by Herbie Hancock. She’s won numerous awards as a pianist and a flutist. Welcome to Part 2 of the two-part Special Episode introducing my new release, “MA PETITE FLEUR STRING QUARTET”. This work transforms my jazz ballad into a lush classical string quartet piece. The work has been praised by a host of Classical Music Stars, all of whom are listed below. In Part 1 yesterday we listened to this new work. In Part 2 today we're going to introduce the incredible musicians who brought this piece to life.David Shenton is the genius arranger behind this work. David is an English pianist, violinist, composer and arranger. He started playing the violin at age 7 and he’s composed hundreds of works from small piano pieces to full-length operas. Violinist Katie Thomas is a soloist, chamber musician, studio violinist and concert-mistress. She’s played on Grammy winning albums and also recorded with artists like Rosanne Cash, The O’Jays, Jimmy Fallon and the animation series “Dragons”. Violinist Erica Dicker works in a wide variety of musical settings in both notated and improvised music. She is a member of the electro-acoustic trio Vaster Than Empires. She is also a founding member of the horn-trio Kylwyria. And she’s known for her work with composer and multi-instrumentalist Anthony Braxton.J.J. Johnson has been the violist at Radio City Music Hall. His Broadway musical experience has included On The Town, Cats, Fiddler On The Roof, An American In Paris, Wicked, My Fair Lady, and Sunset Boulevard. He has also appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman. Dave Eggar is a Rock Star cellist who recently was a guest on the podcast. He’s a 5x Grammy nominee. He’s worked with Paul Simon, John Legend, Norah Jones, Foreigner, Josh Groban and Train.
