On this episode of Fishing the DMV I have a conversation with Jason Paugh. Jason is a local stick on Deep Creek Lake, the largest lake in Maryland. In bass fishing some people specifically target a world record for others it is all about tournament fishing. Jason made it a goal to document every fish that he caught. He has now documented over 4,000 bass caught under 3 years of fishing and has 22 Maryland State Certified Citations to his name!! On this episode of Fishing the DMV we talk about all things flathead catfish on the Upper Potomac River with Pat O'Donnell. Pat is an avid catfish angler who loves catching Flathead Catfish. Pat has agreed to come on the show to get some perspective as to why anglers love to target this creature in the best tactics that you can implement to increase your chances of success the next time you go Cat-fishing. The relative abundance of flathead catfish was a little less than half of the channel catfish abundance during our surveys in 2021 when no flathead were collected in 2011. However, the relative abundance of flathead catfish in our surveys more than doubled in the five-year period between 2016 and 2021. This still represents a very rapid increase in flathead abundance. John runs all 5 management regions of Maryland. In this episode we dive into the state of the state of the Non-tidal portion of the Potomac River, flathead catfish situation, trout stocking programs and the smallmouth fish stocking program. The relative abundance of flathead catfish was a little less than half of the channel catfish abundance during our surveys in 2021 when no flathead were collected in 2011. On this episode of fishing the DMV we have the privilege of talk to Chair of the Maryland Sport Fisheries Advisory Commission David Sikorski on the state of the Chesapeake Bay.David Sikorski is a native Marylander and lifelong and avid sportsman For many years, he worked in a small family residential building and real estate business where he largely focused on rental property management and new home sales. With an interest in policy, a knack for understanding science, and a love for fishing and the outdoors, David gravitated towards Coastal Conservation Association(CCA) Maryland in 2005 and began volunteering as a part of their Government Relations Committee, helping guide their conservation work. After volunteering for over a decade for CCA Maryland, David was hired as the Executive Director in early 2017, and now leads CCA Maryland’s habitat program and advocacy effortsDavid was appointed to the Maryland Sport Fisheries Advisory Commission(SFAC) in 2009 and currently serves as the Chair. He also represents CCA Maryland on the Oyster Advisory Commission(OAC). In early 2021, David was selected as a legislative proxy for the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission(ASMFC), the interstate body that oversees the management of migratory fish in state waters along the Atlantic Coast. Prior to being selected for this role, David was a member of the ASMFC Atlantic menhaden and striped bass advisory panels. David is also a member of the Marine Resources Education Program National Steering Committee and Mid-Atlantic Implementation team. On this episode of Fishing the DMV Jeff Kelble sits down with VDWR Biologist John Odenkirk to discuss fish, the health of the Shenandoah River, and some less known things that go on behind the scenes when river systems hit a downward spiral. Jeff spent over 6 years guiding the Shenandoah River before heading up the Shenandoah Riverkeeper position for 8 years starting in 2006 when he saw the river taking a nosedive. As Riverkeeper he built coalitions of river users, river related businesses, government officials and legal partners. Jeff worked to write and enforce effective environmental laws and regulations, and employ a litigation and advocacy strategy which over ten years solved dozens of complex pollution issues threatening public use of the Shenandoah River. This experience led to an opportunity to serve as the President of the Potomac Riverkeeper Network defending our Nation’s river for another 8 years. Jeff is currently the owner and operator of Ashby Gap Adventures. We as anglers rightfully get excited when a fishery is not producing quality catches but it’s important to know there are many folks working hard to advocate for this great resource! What started out as a way to get a little more water access turned into an addictive hobby that has led me up and down the coast and abroad chasing fish from a kayak. Along the way I have made some great friends from sites like www.snaggedline.com, put over 300,000 miles on my vehicles, caught a lot of fish, and even ran the largest kayak fishing tournament in Maryland for 7 years to raise money for local charities. I’ve been so consumed with kayak fishing over the past decade that it’s spawned other hobbies like reel repair and rod building; always on the quest for the rod with the right action and handle length for kayak fishing.
