First Issue Club Comic Books

This week Vargas is a solo act! He's pulled some treasures out of the collection and telling their tales. Mostly how he got them signed. He also read some first issues! Bytchcraft by Aaron Reese, Lema Carril, Bex Glendining, and Morgan Martinez out on Mad Cave, and Krypto: Last Dog of Krypton from DC by Ryan North, Mike Norton, and Ian Herring. Lots of content for a single host!

Well, we missed last week and we're sorry for that... But today you get treated with a plethora of issues courtesy of father time. Thats right - TWO WEEKS OF FIRST ISSUES! Today, first and foremost we're talking buckets. Next we get into a marketing gimmick from Bad Idea Comics. On the slate of comics we've got Imperial, Death of the Silver Silver, The New Avengers, The World to Come, and Runaways all from Marvel Comics. On other pubs we've got Batman and Robin: Jason Todd, The Sixth Gun: Road to the Six, and Blood Type!

This week Vargas and Mike are crackin' into previews and giving you the highlights of what stood out to us. In other news — we warn you to avoid some spoilers, Batman and Deadpool are meeting, the Superman cast is going on a world tour, A new Toxic Crusaders comic, Local Comic Shop Day changes, & Bad Idea party at San Diego Comicon. Apart from the books in the title, we're talking about Dark Honor on the Image imprint SYZYGY, and Goddamn Tragedy - a one-shot by Chris Condon out on Oni Comics. Be nice, sign everyones yearbooks, have a great Summer (HAGS), and read lots of comics.

This week we try to think of two celebrities who have appeared as 3 different high profile comic book characters in movies while discussing the Spider-man Nior trailer. Then... You know its all about comics baby. Like the title suggests, we dig into Dan Slotts Superman, Zander Cannons Sleep, The Killer: Affairs of the State II, Whatever Happened to the Crimson Justice?, and Godzilla: Here There be Aliens. BONUS: Vargas missed last week so he catches us up on his take on Exquisite Corpses.

HEY! We've got a lot to cover this week. The Big 2 treated us with a duo of trailers. DC's mega long Superman trailer, and Marvels teaser/trailer for the Riri Williams Iron Heart show. They are both good, but we'll tell you WHY they're good to US!!! In comics we'll discuss the new Exquisite Corpse project that got kick started by James Tynion, the blind bag phenomenon that is Battle Beast (an Invincible spin-off series), a new direction for Supergirl where Sophie Campbell does double duty writing and illustrating Kara back in Midvale, and a brief nod of the hat to Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens.

Today, we'll be talking about the Old Guard sequel, an All-Star Superman audio book, comic supplies tariffs, and alternate timeline for marvels alternate ultimate timeline?!?! The comics we'll be discussing include Star Wars, Captain Planet, Spacequest, Blood & Thunder, and Vargas' pick of the week... Vanishing Point!

HEY! We're talking about first issues! If you wanna hear about the Fantastic Four trailer, we do that over on our patreon. OTHERWISE, stick around for some Thunderbolts and Diamond chatting. In addition to the books in the title, we've got another GI JOE silent mission (feat. Spirit), and Buried Long Long Ago.

This week we're talking tariffs and what a price increases means for us, and what they might mean for creators, before immediately contradicting ourselves and talking about how much money Skybound already made on the massive Transformers Kickstarter project. For first issues, we're of course covering the new jumping on point for one the most iconic titles out there — Amazing Spider-Man!! Then we've got some minis and one-offs with Fire and Ice: When Hell Freezes Over #1 out of 6 on DC, and Dani's entry into the series of GI Joe 21 homages (better known as 'the silent issue') with GI Joe A Real American Hero: JINX - Silent missions #1. We play a little bit of catch up on first issues past and talk Dark Pyramid, and Vargas reads each of the first issues of the Joe Hills old DC Black Label Imprint - Hill House!

There are a ton of first issues this week, and we're talking about as many of em as we can! Shout out to Valiants new Beyond books, that weren't at our shop this week. We'll try to catch up on those on the Patreon next week. BUT, we did cover Absolute Green Lantern, Daredevil: Cold Day in Hell, Deadpool Kills the Marvel Universe One Last Time, Resurrection Man, I Was a Fashion School Serial Killer, and Past Time. EMERGENCY BONUS EPISODE! By now, you've surely seen a ton of the news drops from this huge leak across the big 2 and several indie publishers. We're here to bring you our takes on some of the most alarming headlines we've come across so far. Buckle yourselves in! It's gonna be a wild week in comix-ville!

This week we're joined by our pal Chris Hacker – Who you might know from the Oblivion Bar Podcast! We talk a little about crawling Planet Comicon in Kansas City together, before we get into the show, which contains the following... MCU Casting announcements (You probably already saw them, but have you heard our takes on them!?!), Diamond getting sold, the club arguing over Hush 2, and talking about some other great issues like Absolute Martian Manhunter, The Mummy, You'll Do Bad Things, and MoOoOoRe. This week we did what we always do... minus one club member :( — but we've got two great first issues to talk about The Last Boy by Dan Panosian, and Absolute Flash by Jeff Lemire. A couple club faves and they both brought it!

This week were talking con prep for our upcoming weekend at Planet Comicon with Boulevard Brewing Co! New beers, new games, and new giveaways to be had. So look out for us at booth #100 and stay tuned to our socials. In the podcast we're talking about Dustin Nguyens cover pay concerns, a doc on Stan Lee's later life, and a few comic books with Assorted Crisis Events, Nick Fury vs. Fing Fang Foom, and Dark Pyramid. This week, the club talks about probably fake concept art for Avengers Doomsday. In addition to the comics in the title, we're also talking about Mothra: Queen of Monsters on IDW and Secret Six out on DC.

This week, we talk about beverage temperature, and what to put in cereal. ALSO, comic books were discussed! We'll chat about Kaiju & the Marvel/DC crossover before getting into some new(ish) first issues. Our comics include Red Hulk, Jumpscare, & Let This One Be a Devil.

This week Greg has a chat with Club favorite writer Matthew Rosenberg (At minute 9:00 timecode travellers!). During their discussion we get to hear more about the upcoming We're Taking Everyone Down with Us #1 on Image Comics. You can pick up your copy March 26 - and folks... It's double sized. In this episode we'll chit-chat about two marvel firsties: Xaviers Secret (which compiles an unlimited infinity series), and Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon. In the news, Captain Planet is back in comics, DSTLRY has a funny slip up, Jeff and Galactica are the cover of the week, Cineverse saves the previously doomed Toxic Avenger movie, Amazing Spider-man might be back to basics again, the DOGE doesn't wanna spend money on comic stuff, and more tomfoolery right here... This week the club talks about Diamond distributors, then gets into comic books! We read Behemoth, You Won't Feel a Thing, Astonishing Avengers, When I Lay My Vengeance Upon Thee, New Champions, Aquaman (All In!), and Rogue: The Savage Land

This week the club looks back on 2024 to reminisce about what in the comic book landscape we'll remember this even-numbered year for (for better or worse)!

We spend about 40 minutes talking about a 2-minute trailer, and then get into a handful of comics like a new EC Holiday offering (via Oni), Erica Shultz's Laura Kinney Wolverine, Ram V's New Gods firsty, and MORE!
