Sweet Samara is a short documentary, directed by Divad Durant, that follows Jalal Sabur, a Black farmer, at the Sweet Freedom Farm in Germantown, New York. The film explores Mr. Sabur’s mission to use maple syrup as a tool or symbol for abolition, drawing historical parallels between syrup and the fight against slavery—when it was promoted as an alternative to sugar produced through enslaved labor.
