Fight For Iowa - Karl Roddy & Amy Fowler

George Roddy once set the Finkbine course record, shooting a 72 with nine's of 31-41. Roddy rarely lost over several years of competition starting in 1929. Sadly he couldn't defeat racism. Banned from country clubs where most prominent tournaments were held because he was African American, George Roddy never got to compete for a Big Ten title. He won several in state university meets and all of his head to head duals. Growing up in Keokuk and unable to afford a bus ticket to campus his freshman year, Roddy walked to Iowa City. The amazing story of new Hawkeye Hall of Famer George Roddy is the subject matter for this week's Fight for Iowa, along with Field Hockey's Amy Fowler. Plus, Iowa football in search of a consistent offense, is preparing for cross state rival Iowa State with the Cy Hawk trophy at stake.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's less than two weeks before College Football kicks off another season. The Iowa Hawkeyes are halfway through their fall camp. Questions are being answered, some will hang on through the first week or so due to lingering injuries. You'll hear about many of those developing positional stories as Coach Ferentz joins us on this weeks Fight for Iowa podcast, sponsored by Scheels, Iowa Corn and Athletico.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Fight for Iowa - Robert Gallery

Two of the greatest grid iron Hawkeyes arrived on campus in 1999 eager to help new coach Kirk Ferentz retool the Iowa program and get the new century off on the right foot. Both Robert Gallery and Dallas Clark had very few college offers. In fact Clark walked on, willing to play any position that would appropriate time on the field. Robert Gallery, ironically was listed as a tight end. Both found their niche and are on this year's College Football Foundation Hall of Fame ballot, with winners to be announced later this year. Robert Gallery joins us on this weeks Fight for Iowa podcast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Fight for Iowa - Kirk Ferentz & a Cy-Hawk Preview

College football is a month and a few days out. The Iowa Hawkeyes start their training camp in less than two weeks. Pre season awards and watch lists are rolling off the press for the likes of seniors Jack Campbell at LB and CB Riley Moss. Linebackers Seth Benson and Jestin Jacobs are highly thought of and punter Tory Taylor landed on the Ray Guy award roll call. Offensively the line, the blockers soaked up a valuable year of experience and look to build on a Citrus Bowl performance that saw the running game average 6 yards a carry. On this weeks Fight for Iowa podcast you'll hear from Head Coach Kirk Ferentz at the Big Ten Media kickoff in Indianapolis and we'll preview the Hawkeyes week two opponent Iowa State with the Cyclones veteran play by play voice John Walters. Fight for Iowa - Iowa Football Preview | South Dakota State

For those of us who think the summer flies by, Iowa Football is about 45 days out. Fall camp begins in less than a month. Now until kickoff, we'll preview each of the Hawkeye's opponents, starting with South Dakota State. The Jack Rabbits powered their way to an 11 win season and a spot in the national semi finals last December. In fact the Jacks have qualified for the football championship subdivision post season each of the last ten years. Like Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz, South Dakota State's John Stigelmeier KNOWS the lay of the land. The winningest coach in school history, Stigelmeier's teams have won 185 games. Ferentz has 178 wins in 23 seasons at Iowa, 190 over-all. Coaches that want to be balanced run to pass and turnover free. Tyler Merriam is in his 12th season as the radio play by play voice of South Dakota State. Fight for Iowa - Dallas Clark

Two of Iowa football's greatest are on this year's college hall of fame ballot. OT Robert Gallery and Tight End Dallas Clark are among 80 players and 9 coaches nominated by the National Football Foundation. Voting concludes the end of June and we'll know who's in this years class the end of December. Both Gallery and Clark were consensus All Americans from small town Iowa. Both were highly coveted 1st round Nfl draft picks, Gallery #2 over-all by the Oakland Raiders. Clark was chosen with the 24th selection by the Indianapolis Colts. Born in Sioux Falls and growing up in Livermore in Northern, Iowa, population 380, Dallas Clark would wear his Incredible Hulk pajama's most of the day if allowed. Folks in Humboldt county had no idea then that Clark would grow into the Nfl's version of the short tempered Dr. Bruce Banner. Clark played a mad blocker and pass catcher at Iowa for a couple years and then for 11 seasons as QB Payton Manning's main target, winning a Super Bowl along the way. While Dallas Clark loved Marvel comics super hero's he settled for a Rudy Ruettiger role. Rudy was turned down three times by Notre Dame before he was allowed to walk on, Dallas Clark arrived in Iowa City in 1999 wide eyed and with out a scholarship offer but determined to work his way into a Hawkeye uniform. The rest is material that books and movies are made of. Dallas Clark joins us on this week's Fight for Iowa podcast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Fight for Iowa - Kris Murray

Iowa basketball's Kris Murray is returning to the Hawkeyes for his junior season after going through the preliminary NBA draft process. After working out for most of the professional teams in Chicago, Murray says he learned a lot and can't wait to get back to work with his team mates and coaches, to play at least one more year....for the best fan base in the world. The 6'8, 210 pound Murray posted single season bests in every statistical category last season. His 9 points and 4 rebounds in 17 minutes was very good use of Murray's time. Add in 43 % shooting and 31 block shots. Murray will be welcomed back by his team mates when organized summer work outs begin this month. Murray joins us on this weeks Fight for Iowa podcast. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Fight For Iowa Podcast - Phil Parker

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz and Defensive Coordinator Phil Parker arrived together 24 years ago with the same goal, win games by running the ball and stopping the run. That approach has worked nicely.Parker began as backfield coach before succeeding Norm Parker. His recruiting and tutoring have been significant. From Bob Sanders and Desmond King to present day Riley Moss and the immediate future in Xavier Nwankpa, the Hawkeye secondary has shown a nose for the football. It was tops in the country with a school record 24 interceptions last season and has picked off 88 passes in the last 5 years. Fight for Iowa - Brian Ferentz

Iowa Hawkeye basketball and wrestling are in a frenzied focus this week. Big Ten titles for both the Men and Women hoops have them in an enviable position. The Brands Brothers and the wrestlers motor into the motor city for a showdown with the Nittany Lions, Wolverines and Buckeyes for a National championship. Quietly, across the street, the defending West Division champion Football Hawkeyes are readying for spring practice. March 23rd sees the opening session where the mold for this fall begins to take shape. Iowa lost to Michigan in the Championship game. A trip to the Citrus Bowl in Orlando New Years Day saw a late Kentucky touchdown result in a 20-17 victory for the Wildcats and end Iowa's three game bowl winning streak. With another successful recruiting class in the books, the coaches and players turn their attention to six months from now when a strong defense and special teams look for repeat performances of 2021. The offense wants more production from its QB and running game and should get both with a more seasoned offensive line and a years experience for gifted wide receivers Keegan Johnson and Arland Bruce the 4th. Wilson was an Iowa track star as a student and qualified for the 1924 Olympic games. Wilson at one time held the world record in the 200 and 400 meters. In between he and Steve Roe were George Wine and Phil Haddy. Three of the four are in the CoSidsa Hall of fame with Roe to be inducted in June.
