Ep 32FTF Ep. 32 - Open Cup or Bust After Defeat at Cincinnati

Hey, Fire fans! We're all in on the US Open Cup, right? After the defeat to FC Cincinnati, the Chicago Fire need to focus on their best opportunity to do something meaningful this season. And from the way they played in Cincinnati, they already were. Interim manager Frank Klopas rolled out a 5-4-1 formation and played for a draw from the opening whistle. He rotated his squad and tried to preserve his defense, but once again, the Men in Red couldn't hold onto points late. Lucho Acosta scored the winner for FCC in the 83rd minute, and the Fire left Ohio with nothing to show for their efforts. Tune in as our host breaks down the stats and the disappointment of the match. In the 2nd half of the show, Nick looks ahead to the US Open Cup where the Chicago Fire will face the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo have had a more impressive Cup run than Chicago so far, but a single-elimination tournament can produce many surprises. The Fire will need to create much more on offense than they have in their recent stretch of games to have any chance of claiming their 5th USOC Trophy - which would be an MLS club record. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 31FTF Ep. 31 - Draws That Feel Like Losses: Toronto FC Recap & FC Cincinnati Preview

Hey, Fire fans! The Chicago Fire are coming off a mid-week match at BMO Field, and unfortunately are coming off another draw. While a draw at Eastern Conference power New England may have felt like progress, the draw against Toronto FC certainly felt like a loss. The Fire changed up their formation, moved players around (Koutsias to the wing? Never again!) and would have ended up with a much worse result if not for the likes of goalkeepers Chris Brady and Spencer Richey. It looked like the Fire were playing for a draw in the second half and already thinking about their next US Open Cup match. But they can't overlook FC Cincinnati! The Men in Red travel to the Queen City (yes, another city with that nickname) to take on the top team in Major League Soccer right now. I don't think Brandon Vazquez will miss like he did in the first meeting between these squads, and Lucho Acosta certainly won't be a late sub for the orange and blue. This could be an ugly game for the Fire, who will have to rely on turnovers and quick counter-attacks if they are to have any chance at a result. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 30FTF Ep. 30 - Away Day Draw vs. New England and TFC Preview

Hey, Fire fans! Your Men in Red, the Chicago Fire, played the New England Revolution to a 3-3 draw at Gillette Stadium, behind goals from Georgios Koutsias, Maren Haile-Selassie, and an own goal from the Revs defense. However - and as per usual - the Fire were unable to hold the lead, giving up equalizing goals off of corner kicks to Bobby Wood and Jozy Altidore. (And that was after Noel Buck opened things up for New England with a banger.) In the second half of the show, Nick looks forward to the mid-week matchup against Eastern Conference rival Toronto FC. TFC is coming off a solid win, but internal struggles between manager Bob Bradley and Italian star Federico Bernardeschi could undermine their chances of a win streak. If the Fire continue to play counter-attacking football, and Lorenzo Insigne and Richie Laryea can't pick up the slack, maybe the Men in Red from the States take the three points. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 29FTF Ep. 29 - Rekindled: Fire Advance in USOC, Face Revs in MLS

Hey, Fire fans! Are you done celebrating the US Open Cup victory over Austin FC? Keep it going as long as you can, but also be prepared for MLS play against Eastern Conference foes, the New England Revolution. Your Men in Red travel to Massachusetts this weekend to start their climb out of Major League Soccer's basement. In this show, our host Nick previews the stats, line ups, and strategies of the Chicago Fire and the New England Revolution. Will we see a rivalry rekindled? Or will the Fire revert to their ways on the road? Stay tuned and find out! Nick also looks at some Fire coaching rumors, compares Gregg Berhalter to past Fire managers, and updates everyone on the contract extension of homegrown Mauricio Pineda. Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 28FTF Ep. 28 - Beware Greeks Bearing Goals: Fire Draw Atlanta

Hey, Fire fans! It was unofficially Greek Night at Soldier Field with Chicago’s Georgios Koutsias and Atlanta’s Giorgos Giakoumakis combining for three of the six goals on the night. The Greek strikers lifted their teams to a point each, but it was ultimately another disappointing performance by the Men in Red. An abysmal first half was salvaged by a masterful Xerdan Shaqiri corner kick (scored an own goal against the Five Stripes, but we all know it was an Olimpico), and the Fire showed enough effort to salvage a draw. In today's show, our host uses the goals as jumping off points to analyze the Fire's defensive lapses, lack of talent, and how relying on effort - and utility player/try-hard-effort-guy Fabian Herbers - will always lose out to superior talent. Nick also looks at the Fire's schedule over the next several weeks, and explains how the season could be over very soon. How did you feel about the match against Atlanta United? Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 27FTF Ep. 27 - Court Jesters: Fire a Joke in the Queen City

Hey, Fire fans! The Men in Red put on another joke of a performance at Charlotte FC during their midweek match. Despite the first half goal from Kacper Przybylko (who nearly turned a breakway into a blunder), the Chicago Fire allowed the opposition two late goals. The club from the Queen City saw Brandon Cambridge announce himself to MLS with a two goal performance. The Fire again showed their mental weakness, their tactical incompetence, and poor defending. In the show's second half, our host looks at the salaries of the Chicago Fire, as recently released by the MLS Players Association (MLSPA). It's not surprising that Shaqiri is vastly underperforming his contract, but the numbers paint a bigger picture of incompetent spending and clueless roster building. Nick compares the Fire roster salaries to LAFC - a team known for constructing solid rosters year over year - and poses the question: What if we took $4 million from Shaqiri's contract and spent it on better players on the bottom half of the roster? Twitter - Facebook - Spotify - YouTube Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Ep 26FTF Ep. 26 - Rinse & Repeat: Fire beat St. Louis Again! Take on Charlotte Shortly

Hey, Fire fans! The Fire are on a win streak! ... kind of. The Chicago Fire repeated their winning effort in regular season MLS play, defeating expansion side St. Louis CITY SC 1-0 in Soldier Field. That made it two in a row in all competitions, the Fire's best run of form in over a month. Tune in to hear out host give you his thoughts on the game, including the goal, the Klopas Effect, and how the Xerdan Shaqiri and Brian Gutierrez are able to play productive soccer together. In the second half, Nick looks ahead to the Men in Red's next matchup: an away match to Charlotte FC. The Crown City club is coming off a big win against Atlanta United (3-1!) but have they turned their season around? Both Chicago and Charlotte are fighting to move above the playoff line. Ep 25FTF Ep. 25 - The St. Louis Double: Previewing Chicago Fire vs. St. Louis City

Hey, Fire fans! What a week it's been! With the firing of manager Ezra Hendrickson and the US Open Cup victory vs. St. Louis City, the miserable loss vs. Nashville SC seems like forever ago. Now, the Men in Red welcome the Arch-rivals to Soldier Field and look to pull off the "St. Louis Double" by beating their new rivals in Open Cup play and MLS regular season play. Tune in as we look at St. Louis' possible formation and lineup, their strengths, and what the Fire will need to do to take all three points at home. We also read through former coach Ezra Hendrickson's farewell letter issued via social media. A classy look, yes, but there are some not-so-subtle insults and shots taken at the Chicago Fire FC organization. What did you think will be the result this weekend? Ep 24FTF Ep. 24 - EZRA OUT! Fire rocked in Music City, Sack Manager

Hey, Fire fans. The Chicago Fire have fired manager Ezra Hendrickson and assistant coach Junior Gonzalez. Fans of the Men In Red are breathing a collective sigh of relief (at least until they heard Frank Klopas was been named interim manager). This news comes as no surprise as the Fire have struggled to find any offense this season, frequently blow leads, and are coming off their worst match of the season to Nashville SC. Down in the Music City, the Fire got rocked 3-0 behind a hat trick from Hany Mukhtar. After two penalty kicks, the side from Chicago collapsed mentally, allowing a third to the reigning MLS MVP. The Fire tried a new 3-5-2 formation, but Nashville was the absolute wrong team for that. Tune in as we analyze the news of the Ezra's firing, review the formation and stats of the game, and what we anticipate for the future of the club. Ep 23FTF Ep. 23 - Will the Fire get Cooked? Previewing Chicago Fire at Nashville SC

Hey, Fire fans! Are you ready for more? Well, get ready. The Men in Red travel to Geodis Park in the Music City to take on Nashville SC. In a city known for barbeque and music, I hope you're ready for the Fire to get cooked - or get rocked - or just get embarrassed by a superior opponent. Tune in as out host looks at the top players from Nashville, the anticipated formations, and the odds on the match. Nick gives his prediction, as well, and he is not optimistic that Chicago comes home with a point. In the second half of the show, Nick also discusses why the Chicago Fire not releasing Brian Gutierrez and Chris Brady for youth international duty at the U-20 FIFA World Cup is the wrong decision. Ep 22FTF Ep. 22 - Please make it stop! Fire lose late at home. Again.

Hey, Fire fans. I feel your pain. I feel your hurt. I feel your frustration after another lead is squandered off a set piece, late in the game, at home. (And to none other than Fire-killer Cory Burke.) Tune in as we look back on another disappointing match by the Men in Red. Our host, Nick, breaks down the goals, the tactics, and the ... questionable ... decisions by the coaching staff. We also take a deep dive into the substitution patters by manager Ezra Hendrickson. Yes, he had to make an early move at center back for an injured Carlos Teran, but he had no backup CBs on the roster and was unable to adjust to this early setback. Stay tuned to hear some of the head coach's quotes, and how he continues to indict himself every time he opens his mouth. 00:00 Intro 2:22 - Goals Breakdown 5:36 - Examining Chris Mueller 9:42 - Substitution Failures 14:23 - Ezra Hendrickson Quotes 18:31 - John Donovan Segment 27:26 - Stats Review 31:04 - Fire and MLS Updates What'd you think of the match? Hey, Fire fans! I hope you have a short memory (what Atlanta game?) because the Red Bulls of New York are coming to town! Our Men in Red have a great opportunity to get back into the win column against a New York team that is struggling to score goals. They are also down several starters while the Fire are expected to have a full compliment of players. Ep 20FTF Ep. 20 - Fire Burned in Atlanta, Recapping Chicago Fire at Atlanta United

Hey, Fire fans! How are we felling after another debacle by our Men in Red? Our host is not happy - and he's going to let you know just how he feels. The Fire lose in the most Chicago Fire way possible - an own-goal in stoppage time (off the player's backside, no less!). As usual, we look at the goals and the stats, but Nick really has a fire lit under him. He expresses his frustration against his home town team, and rips into any idea that the Fire are having a decent season. Sadly, the only solution seems to be to a complete rebuild - something Chicago sports fans are sadly too familiar with. What did you think of the match and of the Fire? Ep 19FTF Ep. 19 - Previewing Chicago Fire at Atlanta United

Hey, Fire fans! We've got another great match coming up against Eastern Conference opponent Atlanta United. The Five Stripes fancy themselves as a favorite in the East, but will our Men in Red be able to bring Atlanta back to reality? Tune in as our host breaks down the players, formations & tactics, and headlines coming out of this matchup. The oddsmakers are not favoring the Chicago Fire, but they may be able to salvage a point by controlling the middle of the field and allowing Brian Gutierrez, Xerdan Shaqiri, and Kei Kamara to do what they do best: pass, shoot, and score goals. This should be a fast paced match between two teams with speedy wingers and wing-backs - Chris Muller, Maren Haile-Selassie, Caleb Wiley, Andrew Gutman, just to name a few. Ep 18FTF Ep. 18 - Not Again! Fire Draw Union, Drop Points at Home

Hey, Fire fans! Tell me if you've heard this one before: the Chicago Fire look to turn the corner on their season, play a great first half, then blow a lead (at home!). Once again, the Men in Red left Soldier Field with a sense of deja vu. After a good first half where the Fire controlled possession, gave Maren Haile-Selassie his first goal, and earned a wacky own-goal from an odd Philadelphia Union clearance, defensive lapses and poor discipline once again doomed Chicago. In this show, Nick breaks down the goals, player and coaching performances (Why didn't Ezra sub in Wyatt Omsberg!?), and gives his reactions to the match. He also takes a look at Gaston Gimenez, a now polarizing figure on the Fire's roster, and explains why he'd like to just move on from the inconsistent, hot-headed defensive midfielder. Good for Jim Curtin and the Philadelphia Union on stealing a point, but the home team played right into their hands and left their supporters saying "Not again" once again. Ep 17FTF Ep. 17 - Rematch! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Philadelphia Union

Hey, Fire fans, we're back looking at the Chicago Fire's next matchup - a rematch against defending Eastern Conference champions, the Philadelphia Union. In a recent match at Subaru Park, the Fire lost 1-0 but performed better than expected. Will they get the full three points now that they are back home in Soldier Field? Our host, Nick, previews three big questions for the Fire: How will they start Brian Gutierrez and Xerdan Shaqiri together? Who gets the start along the backline? How will the Union play given their rotated squad from Concacaf Champions League? How do you think the Men in Red will perform this weekend? Leave a comment and be sure to follow on social media. Ep 16FTF Ep. 16 - Fire Defeat Loons! Recapping Chicago's Win Over MNUFC

Hey, Fire fans! The Fire are unbeaten in four matches, have moved up to 6th in the Eastern Conference standings, and are trending higher. Their latest result - a 2-1 victory over Minnesota United - was the Fire's best match of the season. The attacked cohesively, maintained control of the game, and made the tactical and formational adjustments to preserve the victory. In this episode, Nick recaps the goals, the coaching moves, and statistics of the Men in Red's latest performance. He also looks at young goalkeeper Chris Brady's performance. Despite the howler, he came up with a number of good saves, and has the right mentality to excel in the future. Brian Gutierrez also continues his performance as the engine driving the Fire's offense, and the attention he receives from opposing defenses is opening up lanes for wingers Haile-Selassie and Mueller, and wing-backs Souquet and Navarro. Ep 15FTF Ep. 15 - The Loons have landed! Previewing Chicago Fire vs. Minnesota United

Hey, Fire fans, the Loons have landed! MNUFC is in town to take on the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field. In today's episode, Nick asks three questions about the Men in Red and previews how he expects Minnesota United to play out this match, and whether Ezra Hendrickson or Adrian Heath will get the better of their opponent. For the Fire: Who starts at center-mid? Shaqiri or Gutierrez? Who starts as the outside-backs? Navarro and Souquet or Dean and Aceves? Will we see new Greek striker Georgios Koutsias? (I certainly hope so!) Meanwhile on the Loons side of the pitch, I expect a defend-and-counter style. Ep 14FTF Ep. 14 - What did we just watch? Fire Flat vs. DC United

Hey, Fire fans! What did we just watch? I wish I could say the Chicago Fire's flat play vs. DC United was a bad April Fool's joke, but sadly it's a result of an anemic offense, a defense barely holding it together, and a head coach unable to adjust/adapt over the course of a game...or a season...or his career (TBD). In today's show, our host looks at the offensive woes and how the team is operating on the slimmest of margins for error. Defensively, the team got lucky that Taxi Fountas and Christian Benteke had off-games, otherwise this could've been a 3-0 route at home. (And defense is supposed to be their strength!) Finally, Nick breaks down Fire manager Ezra Hendrickson's post-game comments, revealing that Ezra literally doesn't have the answers. What did you think of the Men in Red in their latest match? Our host gives you his thoughts on the first half, how things changed in the second half, and what exactly went wrong on the FCC goals. Not to be too pessimistic, the Fire did get three goals - Przybylko, Czichos, and Mueller all found the back of the net - but defensive woes and offensive consistency are still an issue. In this episode, we preview the Fire's opening match vs. NYCFC, examine the Giorgos Koutsias signing, and take a look at the coaching style of manager Ezra Hendrickson. Nick likes the Fire to draw 1-1 despite what could be a favorable matchup in Week 1 against NYC. He loves the Koutsias signing as having a high-upside from both business and performance standpoints. However, Nick is cautious about Ezra's tactics, formations, and substitutions. Hopefully he's learned from last season and ready to lead the team to three points.
