195: Joe Bushner – Congressman James Traficant, Bribery and Corruption

Retired agent Joe Bushner reviews his investigation of Congressman James Traficant, who was indicted on 10 charges, including bribery, racketeering and tax evasion. This was the second time Traficant was charged with being corrupt. Although not a lawyer, Traficant, a colorful public official known for his outrageous behavior and language, represented himself during both federal trials. Retired agents Bob Burda and Tim Gannon review a Fayetteville, North Carolina bank robbery case that, based on information received from a confidential source, morphed into a murder-for-hire investigation. After the arrest and subsequent confession of one of the bank robbers, the murder victim's body was recovered from a shallow grave on the wooded reserves of Fort Bragg, an Army base near Fayetteville. 192: Kenneth Williams - Phoenix Memo, Phoenix Mountain Arsonist

Retired agent Kenneth Williams reviews the events that led him to write what is now known as the "Phoenix Memo," his work on the Phoenix Mountain Arsonist case, and the aftermath of 9/11. Ken authored the Phoenix Memo prior to the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. The five-page communication issued a warning to the intelligence community that Al-Qaeda members were training in the civil aviation community in the United States. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, his memo became public and received intensive attention from national news media. Ken testified before the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate regarding terrorism matters and cooperated with the 9/11 Commission. Retired agent Joe Navarro reviews the case of Rod Ramsay, an Army veteran living in Tampa, Florida, suspected of committing espionage while stationed in Germany. While interviewing Ramsay forty-two times, Joe recorded the evidence to prove that the spy handed the Soviets vital military secrets that could destroy the US. In this episode, Joe Navarro also reveals some myths about reading body language and what different nonverbal cues indicate. Through his work on the Ramsey case and others, Joe studied, refined, and applied the science of nonverbal communications. 183: Keith Tolhurst – Arizona Extortion, Kidnapping and Maiming Plot

Retired agent Keith Tolhurst reviews an extortion case where the subjects threatened to kidnap and cut off the arm or leg of the 12-year-old son of an Arizona millionaire businessman unless he paid them $250,000. Through a series of phone calls and notes, the scheme provided directions to the victim on where to drop the money. Frank Alber was arrested, convicted of conspiracy and mailing threatening communications, and sentenced to 6 years in prison for the elaborate plot. In this two-for-one episode, retired agents Jim Siano and Tom Baker, both first office agents at the time, review the kidnapping investigation of Barbara Jean Mackle and the arrests of her kidnappers Gary Steven Krist and Ruth Eisemann-Schier. Barbara Jean was buried alive in a wooden coffin-like box for 82 hours during the harrowing incident. 162: Jean and Tom O'Connor – 9/11 FBI Line of Duty Deaths and Illnesses

Special Agents Jean and Tom O'Connor review the work performed, and the devastating health-related complications experienced by FBI agents responding to terrorist attack sites at the World Trade Center in New York, The Pentagon in Washington D.C., Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and evidence collection sites on and immediately after 9/11. Special Agent Tom O'Connor is the President of the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA), and Special Agent Jean O'Connor is a trustee for the FBIAA Scholarship Fund. They are both detailed to the Human Resource Division (HRD) at FBI Headquarters to identify FBI agents, current and retired, who continue to battle illnesses related to 9/11 and to make them aware of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund (VCF). On behalf of the FBIAA, Tom and Jean O'Connor pledge to ensure that these agents and their families obtain the benefits they need and deserve and to honor the 9/11 FBI Line of Duty Deaths of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. 161: Jim Sweeney and Rich Macko – Broad Street Shootout

Retired agents Jim Sweeney and Rich Macko review the March 16, 1994, Broad Street shootout where Rich Macko and another agent were shot and seriously injured, and a drug gang member killed after a violent confrontation that occurred while the agents were attempting a car stop. The surviving gang members had to be tried twice for the attempted assassination of federal officers. FBI Director Louie Freeh visited the agents directly after the shootout and, for their actions, later awarded them the FBI's highest award for bravery, the "Medal of Valor." At the time, Jim was the supervisor and Rich a member of the Philadelphia Division's Violent Traffickers Project, a task force of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies established in 1988 to investigate violent drug dealers and drug-related murders. Also known as Squad 2, the federally funded unit was responsible for the dismantling of more than 50 gangs that had been selling drugs in the Philadelphia area. The subjects, a father and son, were convicted of mail fraud based on the premiums they collected to individually bury or cremate pets when they instead dumped them into mass cremations and burials. 159: Wayne Manis - The Order, White Supremacist Group

Retired agent Wayne Manis reviews his investigation of "The Order," a white supremacist terrorist group, also known as the Silent Brotherhood, that operated in the Pacific Northwest in the early to mid-1980s. The pursuit of these terrorists consumed five years of Wayne Manis's career as he tracked their assassinations, armored car robberies, bombings and counterfeiting activities. The hunt came to an end when Wayne and other SWAT Agents surrounded the terrorist on a remote Whidbey Island and killed the leader in a fiery machine gun battle. At the time, it was the nation's largest domestic terrorism case prior to the Oklahoma City bombing. 158: Garland Schweickhardt – Hollywood Mob Sting, The Last Shot

Retired agent Garland Schweickhardt reviews a case where he went undercover during a five-year sting targeting organized crime's influence over labor unions in the film industry. During the investigation code-named Dramex for "Drama Expose," Garland Schweickhardt posed as Garland Hoffner, an investment consultant for wealthy individuals who wanted to produce a non-union film. The case was later fictionalized as, The Last Shot, an actual Hollywood feature film. In the star-studded comedy, actor Alec Baldwin played the role of Garland Schweickhardt. Matthew Broderick starred as the screenwriter/director unaware that the producer was really an FBI undercover agent. 157: Scott Duffey – Russian National Robs Bank, Kills Mother

Retired agent Scott Duffey reviews a bank robbery case involving a Russian national that morphed into a strange murder investigation. In the process of gathering evidence to charge Dmitry Pronin with bank robbery, Scott discovered that just days before the bank was robbed, Pronin's mother had gone missing. Yulia Pogrebenko had just arrived in the U.S. from Russia to visit her son. Approximately five months later, her lower body and partial skull were discovered floating in the Chesapeake Bay and off of Tolchester Beach. Scott continued working with and assisting the Baltimore County Police Department on the murder investigation. 156: Lauren Anderson – Casablanca Bombings, LEGAT Paris

Retired agent Lauren Anderson reviews the assistance the FBI provided to the Moroccan government directly after the 2003 Casablanca bombings, which resulted in 41 fatalities at five different sites. At the time, she was the Legal Attaché (LEGAT) in Paris, France, where, in addition to France, she directed the FBI's engagement with, and operations in Monaco and twenty-two African nations. After her LEGAT assignment, Lauren Anderson was appointed to be the Assistant Special Agent in Charge (ASAC) of the International Terrorism Branch of the New York Joint Terrorism Task Force, where she oversaw the disruption of many terrorist plots and the success of many prosecutions. She also served as the interim Special Agent in Charge of the New York Counterterrorism Division and the Intelligence Division. Lauren Anderson and her teams received numerous awards and commendations, including from the Director of National Intelligence, the US Attorney General, Director of the National Security Agency, the Director of the FBI, the Respect for Law Alliance, and the Federal Executive Board.
