Il mondo musicalmente variegato dei Gong comprende sfumature di psichedelia, space rock, jazz, avanguardia, krautrock e paesaggi sonori surreali. Il poeta beatnik australiano Daevid Allen (ex Soft Machine) iniziò a fare musica alla fine degli anni ’60, insieme ad una comunità in continua evoluzione di musicisti creativi; una formazione stabile della band si materializza infine con Didier Malherbe , Christian Tritsch e Pip Pyle, insieme ad Allen e la sua compagna Smyth ma nel corso di oltre 50 anni si sono susseguiti molti musicisti oltre ad aver dato vita a numerosi “spin off” della band originaria. Nel 2014 a Daevid Allen è stato diagnosticato un cancro e non è stato più in grado di esibirsi durante le cure e, soddisfacendo i suoi desideri, la band continua la tradizione dei Gong anche dopo la sua scomparsa onorando la sua influenza ed eredità.
