CONFERENCE PREVIEW: The ACC has Virginia in the catbird seat, with Duke, North Carolina, Florida State and Louisville all giving chase (College Basketball 10/29)
Virginia is our pick to be, clearly, the best team in the ACC. But who's the best player? Best freshman? How many tournament teams are going to come out of a league that had only four tournament locks last season? The ACC might be coasting on its reputation a bit, and maybe that becomes more exposed this season if UNC can't get back to top-25 status and if Duke winds up living outside the top 10 in the polls much more often than it does in most years. A scan of the conference inside, with predictions on 1 all the way to 14. Major news: ESPN bails on its Orlando bubble entirely and Arizona has been hit with NINE allegations of wrongdoing from the NCAA (College Basketball 10/26)
On Sunday, The Athletic broke the news that Arizona has been assessed with nine NCAA violations, including five of the worst variety, by the NCAA. One of them is a Level I toward coach Sean Miller. The podcasts first 30 minutes touch on that (and Norlander's back from vacation), and then at the 30-minute mark, GP and Norlander react in real time to the news that, following Norlander's report from Sunday, ESPN has decided to kill all of its games and multi-team events scheduled to be held from Nov. 25-Dec. 4 in Orlando at Walt Disney World. That has huge scheduling fallout, of course. Will it lead to conferences opting to go league-only? Maybe. Hampton, Killian Hayes, Tyrese Haliburton and Onyeka Okungwu are discussed. Listen to this mock draft podcast to get you ready for November 18. NCAA does the right thing; Gregg Marshall denies assaulting his players; latest with Kentucky getting Olivier Sarr eligible (college basketball 10/15)
The NCAA's Division I Council voted on multiple significant items on Wednesday, and two of them we get into on this podcast: 1) all winter-sport athletes get an extra year of eligibility no matter what, which clearly will have a big impact on college basketball. No. 2) When the vote is passed in January, every NCAA scholarship athlete will be able to transfer without having to sit a season the FIRST time they opt to do so. So those two topics, in addition to how Olivier Sarr's situation at Kentucky fits into all this. The podcast wraps with the latest on Gregg Marshall, who on Wednesday denied every physically assaulting anyone with his program. It's a denial Parrish and Norlander did not anticipate, and certainly not six days after the allegations surfaced. NBA Draft Profiles: Iowa State is becoming a reliable factory for NBA picks, and Tyrese Haliburton should be a lottery lock
Our latest draft-centric episode focuses on the statistically magnificent Haliburton, whose season was cut short more than a month before COVID canceled college basketball. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander give an overview on the 1.5 seasons worth of production from Haliburton, who was a terrific college player and is one of the three or four best point guards in a point guard-heavy 2020 draft. 🚨Bombshell allegations against Wichita State coach Greg Marshall: repeated physical and verbal abuse of players and coaches
On Thursday evening, two reports dropped that revealed Wichita State has been investigating its coach, Gregg Marshall, after allegations of multiple incidents of physical and verbal abuse over the past half-decade. One story, via Stadium's Jeff Goodman, cites 26 former players and 10 former coaches giving credibility to the accusations. Marshall's job is clearly in jeopardy. College basketball keeps adding huge November and December games; John Calipari responds to Chris Mack; Bob Huggins update
Matt Norlander broke the news this week that Final Four frontrunners Gonzaga and Iowa have agreed to play each other Dec. 19 in South Dakota. What's the story? We've got it for you, and not only that, but let's look around and see how many top 25-level games are already in the works for the first two weeks of the season. Plus: GP and Norlander discuss John Calipari's weaker-than-wanted attempt at clapping back at Chris Mack, though there is a huge positive from it. The pod's got randomness as well: spanning the globe and checking in with our listeners in Chile, Sweden, Australia. You know, the usual spots. And we have a Bob Huggins update! NBA Draft Profiles: On Duke's Tre Jones, who could be picked in the teens or the low 30s. We say he's a first-rounder
Tre Jones had a very good two-year run at Duke. He's left the Blue Devils behind and is now a prospect placed anywhere from No. 17 or 18 on draft boards to as low as No. 36 or 37. Is the truth somewhere in between? Yeah, probably. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander project the draft placement and career of Tre Jones, and share a Fred VanVleet story along the way as well. Chris Mack going at John Calipari is absolutely amazing; Gonzaga-Baylor announced; Norlander reveals Big 12 December schedule in full
We are thrilled to share a lively episode -- including a scoop on the Big 12. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open with audio of Louisville coach Chris Mack airing the dirty laundry with Kentucky coach John Calipari. An elongated, appreciative breakdown of Mack’s two-minute Twitter exposé that was a top-three highlight of the offseason. Stories aplenty, too. Beyond a beefy first segment, the guys discuss the existential issue threatening college basketball’s season: testing inconsistency and quarantine mandates (32:30), which are even affecting the NFL right now. The podcast closes (51:00) with some great news from Thursday: Gonzaga vs. Baylor on CBS in December. Details on that, and then Norlander unveils the entirety of the Big 12 league schedule in December, which has not been officially released yet but was agreed to by the league earlier this week. A number of top-25 matchups await between Dec. 6 and Dec. 22. Come on in and enjoy. NBA Draft Profiles: Villanova's assembly line of reliable NBA picks should absolutely continue with NBA-ready Saddiq Bey
Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander are back with another appetizer-portioned podcast that focuses on an NBA Draft prospect of note. Today: Villanova's Saddiq Bey, who went from being the least heralded Villanova recruit two years ago to knocking on the door of being a top-10 pick. Norlander thinks he might be a top-five rookie. Parrish thinks he's lasting at least a decade in the NBA. To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. The Pac-12 gets cleared to play ASAP; will Louisville and Kentucky be able to figure out a way to play each other in 2020?
Welcome back, Pac-12. On Thursday, the presidents and chancellors in the conference voted to allow hoops to return on the proper timetable so that all the teams will be playing with the rest of college basketball (save the Ivy League) when the season starts. The pod opens up with a discussion on that, then Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander split open some of the deeper issues with nonconference scheduling and why Thursday’s Pac-12 vote plays a big factor. The guys also discuss the expected reveal on Friday of initial COVID-19 guidelines (21:00) for basketball, which also will have a significant impact on what games we will or won’t get in November and December. The final third of the pod focuses on Kentucky (36:00) and its alumni just going off in the NBA bubble. Plus: Chris Mack can’t yet confirm Louisville will play, or host, Kentucky this year. Will arguably the best rivalry in college hoops go on a one-year hiatus? NBA Draft Profiles: On the heels of a historically bad UNC season, Cole Anthony is fighting for top-10-pick status
Happy Tuesday, everybody. College hoops will have no shortage of news later this week, so be on the lookout for another podcast in a couple of days. But before that, we continue with our NBA Draft profiles, focusing on one-and-done UNC point guard Cole Anthony. His stock was in the top-five range a year ago. Now he's reasonably somewhere between No. 12 and No. 18 in the eyes of many. His case is interesting; Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander evaluate the mercurial talent. The NCAA decides Nov. 25 will be the start date for college basketball's season; here's how we got here
On Wednesday, the NCAA's Division I Council approved a Nov. 25 start date. That's a good thing ... with some drawbacks. Good to have a date, bad for MTE events like the Maui Invitation which will now have to move around that date and create schedule chaos as a result. But there's a lot of positivity to get to! Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander have everything you need to know about this -- plus a look at the historic vote that came to be on Wednesday as well. NBA Draft Profiles: The reasons why Isaac Okoro reminds us Jimmy Butler, Kawhi Leonard when they were drafted
News: the NBA Draft's initial target date of Oct. 16 will be pushed back, with the new target being Nov. 18. That in mind, our Draft Profiles series continues with a player who could go as high as No. 4 or as low as No. 11: Auburn freshman Isaac Okoro. If you look at what Okoro does well right now and compare it to what Kawhi Leonard did well a decade ago, it's fairly surprising. We don't think Okoro will be a Finals MVP one day, but we do think his ceiling is what's going to get him drafted high. ACC coaches are going to propose that every team in college basketball plays in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. Thanks: WE HATE IT.
On Wednesday morning an outrageous headline came in: ACC coaches agreed on a conference call to propose to the NCAA an all-inclusive 2021 tournament. Everybody into the pool. Uh, what? Is this even possible? It's not practical. The pod leads with Parrish and Norlander picking this plan apart, then getting to Norlander's story from Tuesday that revealed how dozens of teams could be playing in a bubble in Connecticut in December. This ep wraps with a quick thought on Billy Donovan being on the coaching market and whether he'll make his way back to college hoops. What's the percentage on that right now? NBA Draft Profiles: Onyeka Okongwu is a high-ceiling, high-floor prospect who won't fall beyond the eighth pick
Happy Labor Day weekend, listeners. Our latest profile pod focuses on a one-and-doner out of the Pac-12 who draws comparisons to Brandon Clarke and John Collins. Onyeka Okongwu could go as high as No. 4 and seems to be slotting well into that No. 6 and No. 7 range. If you missed out on most of USC's games last season, listen in to understand why he's set up well to be an immediate impact player on the defensive end. Remembering the lives and Hall of Fame careers of two coaching legends: John Thompson and Lute Olson
College basketball has lost two of its greatest coaches ever in the span of only four days. This episode honors their memories and gets into some personal storytelling, too. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open with a long discussion about the late John Thompson Jr., Georgetown's greatest, who you can make a case for as the most important coach in college basketball history. And after the Thompson talk, the guys discuss Lute Olson (42:30), who is the most important basketball figure in the history of Arizona -- and the second-best coach in the Pac-8/Pac-10/Pac-12 to John Wooden. The tail end of the podcast touches on a bit of relevant news (1:02:00) on college basketball's start date and the NCAA trademarking "Battle in the Bubble." 🚨Will Wade has been accused by the NCAA of offering at least 11 players impermissible benefits to play at LSU
Two podcasts in one day? In August? We're here for you. This is a quickie emergency pod that addresses serious news that emerged late Wednesday morning: Will Wade, according to NCAA findings, has made at least 11 offers to players and/or former LSU prospects that included impermissible benefits. This information comes via an ESPN.com report, which cited documents obtained by the NCAA. This emergency pod not only lays out those details but also explains a potential timeline and discusses whether or not Wade is going to remain LSU's coach in the short-term -- because the long-term looks grim. Jay Wright leaving Villanova doesn't seem likely; when college basketball's season should start; welcome back, Marshall Henderson!
The podcast is thankful that despite what's going to be the longest offseason in college basketball history, there are indeed headlines that surface weekly that provide us with fodder for the pod. Today's ep opens with a discussion on scuttlebutt about Jay Wright and the potential he'd leave Villanova for the 76ers job. Then the guys get to Norlander's scoop earlier in the week that detailed the four potential season-start dates (26:30) the NCAA and its power brokers are deliberating this week and next. Stick around for Norlander's suggestion on how the season should start and Parrish's point about Christmas break. The ep wraps by welcoming back Ole Miss legend Marshall Henderson (47:00) who was announced Tuesday night as a graduate manager for the program. This could be fun! NBA Draft Profiles: If Deni Avdija played college basketball last season, he would've almost certainly been a top-10 player
The fifth discussion in our draft-profile series focuses for the first time on an international prospect. Deni Avdija is now being regarded as a better NBA pick than all but maybe three players who played college basketball last season. What to know, why he's intriguing, why his situation should never be compared to Luka Dončić. Parrish and Norlander did their homework, and we think you'll enjoy getting to know more about one of the biggest 2020 draft risers over the past six months. Gonzaga and Baylor agree to huge game for upcoming season; NCAA officially embracing playing college basketball in bubbles
If Gonzaga and Baylor can maneuver on a dime and schedule each other for next season, then of course there's real optimism college basketball can pull off a regular season for 2020-21. This episode leads with Norlander's scoop on Few and Drew's coup, and gets into a lot of the scenarios and scuttlebutt Parrish and Norlander have heard from coaches in the past week. We also got news as of late: the NCAA is officially embracing using bubbles and we know college basketball will have a definitive word on its schedule start time and details by mid-September. NBA Draft Profiles: James Wiseman played three games in college. He's still in the mix to go No. 1. Is it justifiable?
This week's prospect analysis looks at all of the off- and on-court attributes and setbacks that make James Wiseman a fascinating case. Wiseman is our fourth profile so far, and he's the final player with a realistic chance of being selected No. 1 overall in October. The biggest question we have: Will the fact he quit Memphis in December impact where he's selected two months from now? The Pac-12 cancels all basketball games until January. Are all other conferences destined to soon make the same decision?
What was mostly expected Tuesday: the Big Ten and Pac-12 announcing they were pushing football to the spring. What wasn't? The Pac-12 also announcing it will not have any sports of any kind played before January. So 12 Pac-12 men's basketball programs just had more than 100 nonconference games taken out from underneath them. Truth is, the rest of the sport is probably going to follow suit, but those decisions aren't expected until September. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open this pod by discussing the Pac-12, and then they get to speculating and building out what college basketball and the NCAA needs to do in order to best ensure college hoops doesn't end up like college football (21:50). Parrish reveals his template for holding college basketball's regular season and NCAA Tournament in 2021, while Norlander reveals some of his details on a 2021 NCAA Tournament that would be hosted and played in one state and mostly one city: Indianapolis. NBA Draft Profiles: Why Anthony Edwards is going to be the toughest yes-or-no decision for any team drafting in the top three
The NBA Draft lottery is two weeks away. Whatever teams land in the No. 1, 2 and 3 spots of that lottery will heavily weigh selecting Georgia's Anthony Edwards. He's a lock to go in the top five. But his one-and-done season with the Dawgs was hit-or-miss. Is his floor lower than most are acknowledging? Are analysts doomed to refer to him in the next few months as a "poor man's James Harden"? Hopefully not. Our latest prospect profile episode is here. Eye on College Basketball' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Castbox and wherever you listen to podcasts. NBA Draft deadline decision day arrives and who are the biggest winners? Iowa and Illinois! Full recap ⬇️ (08/03)
Monday was the NCAA's deadline for college players to declare whether they would remain in the draft pool or return to school. There were less than 10 meaningful and noteworthy decisions that came down in the 48 hours leading up to the deadline; this pod discusses all of those stay-or-leave calls, led by Illinois benefitting as much or more than any other school. MaCio Teague returning to Baylor: Are the Bears the Big 12/national preseason favorites? (College Basketball 7/31)
The NCAA’s deadline to withdraw from the 2020 NBA Draft isn’t until next week — but Baylor’s MaCio Teague went ahead and made a decision (1:20). He’ll be back at Baylor. And now, provided Jared Butler also withdraws from the draft, Scott Drew’s Bears look like they’ll be the preseason favorite in the Big 12. So Gary Parrish and Kyle Boone opened this episode of the Eye On College Basketball podcast by discussing Baylor (and the Big 12 in general) before reacting to news that conferences are largely turning toward league-only football schedules (18:30). What, if anything, does that mean for college basketball? And is it even possible to play college football and college basketball outside of a bubble given that Major League Baseball is hitting one bump after another? It’s a fair question to ask. NBA Draft Profiles: Why isn't Obi Toppin in the conversation to be the No. 1 pick?
In the lead-up to October's NBA Draft, the podcast will be adding more episodes to your weekly feed that include breezy but knowledgeable discussions on the biggest and best prospects in the 2020 draft pool. Our second episode of this variety focuses on Obi Toppin, who led Dayton to its best season in school history. Norlander believes Toppin will be the best pro of any player in the 2020 draft, while Parrish is nearly as high on the 22-year-old. And on the topic of his age, it's there that we find the biggest reason for why Toppin isn't regarded as a No. 1 pick by most. Is that justifiable? Gonzaga lost its best player Monday. Here's why Mark Few's program can now be compared to Duke and Kentucky (college basketball 07/20)
Rather significant headline popped Monday: Gonzaga’s best player bolted on the team and didn’t tell them in advance. Filip Petrusev would’ve been a First Team A-A pick in the preseason had he opted to return, but that’s not the case. Parrish and Norlander react to the news and differ on where they’d slot the Zags heading into the fall. Some behind-the-scenes intel is shared as well, plus a preview of Gonzaga for next season on the whole. There’s more news: Baylor has the No. 1-rated class for 2021 at the moment (22:30). Scott Drew is ushering in what looks to be the golden age of Baylor hoops, and that’s saying something. Remember, there were the Terry Teagle years! Stick around until the end: Norlander’s got some coach/school name marriages to consider. Two big commitments Wednesday: Moussa Cisse is going to Memphis and Jonathan Kuminga is going to the G League (College Basketball 07/15)
Penny Hardaway and Memphis got a commitment Wednesday from 2020 five-star center Moussa Cisse. Surely nothing will go wrong in the next few months, right? Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander give you the particulars of what to know about the situation surrounding Cisse, and then they get to Jonathan Kuminga's Thursday evening announcement (22:30) that he will be playing in the G League pathway program. That makes for five players who have said no to college and yes to the G League. And then a most interesting discussion on one coach's idea to play a shortened 2020-21 season (30:30) and potential one-year configurations for the 2021 NCAA Tournament. What Ivy League's fall-sports cancellation means to college basketball; Makur Maker picks Howard (College Basketball 07/09))
On Wednesday, the Ivy League made significant news in college sports when it announced all organized sports within the league would not be permitted through the end of the fall semester. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open with thoughts on basketball -- and football -- and how these issues are interconnected and why college hoops' season is already impacted. The guys also discuss Makur Maker's commitment to Howard (29:40). Will he even get to play for the Bison? Will others follow? And the podcast wraps with the story of Rasir Bolton and Pat Chambers (44:00). The former PSU player went public this week, prompting Chambers to issue a formal statement and apologize. 06/29: Emoni Bates—WAY ahead of schedule—announces his intention to play for Michigan State. And we think he will.
For the second straight Monday, a No. 1-rated basketball recruit has proven skeptics wrong and announced a commitment to playing college basketball over more lucrative alternatives. On Monday, Emoni Bates made his choice to play for Michigan State, if and when he's eligible to do so. Bates is in the class of 2022 and has made no clear intention of reclassifying to 2021. Bates, 16, regarded as one of the two or three best prospects this century. Will he wind up playing for Tom Izzo? Norlander and Parrish both say yes and present the evidence and indications as to why. The second half of the pod is dedicated to the Big East and UConn (28:00), a reunion which will become official on Wednesday. With UConn going to the Big East, the guys power-rank every program, 1 through 11, and project the hierarchy of the league over the next five seasons. 06/24: Cade Cunningham sticking with Oklahoma State is an abnormally loyal player decision that deserves huge praise
Big-time college hoops news got the week going on Monday. No. 1-rated 2020 recruit Cade Cunningham announced he will stay at Oklahoma State for next season, despite the 2021 postseason ban the NCAA handed the school. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander open the podcast with perspective and reaction, then get into the Big East's 21 minority assistants coming together to rally for social justice (24:00), led by their goal to get Black Lives Matter patches on uniforms for all of next season. And what about Luka Garza (41:00)? Parrish caught up with him last week. Norlander poses a question: has college basketball ever had a player facing the scenario Garza is right now? Listen in to understand -- then stick around at the end for another Trivia Time! and a 90-degree day. 06/11: Zion Williamson’s ex-agent is hell-bent on trying to expose Zion, Nike and Duke
If you thought the countersuit against Zion Williamson would fade away, you'd be wrong. This week, attorneys representing Gina Ford, Williamson's ex-agent, filed a new suit for consideration and cited text-message evidence and allegations regarding a wealthy home, and multiple luxury vehicles, both tied to the Williamson family during his time at Duke. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander spend the first half this podcast discussing the matter. Then they turn to Norlander's story from this week about new head coaches adjusting to the job during pandemic (33:00) and move on to top-rated prospect Jonathan Kuminga (52:00), who is expected to announce next week a reclassification to the class of 2020, plus the implied likelihood he heads for the G League. Also, just a brutal Trivia Time! showing by Norlander wraps the pod. 🚨The NCAA shocks Oklahoma State with a one-year postseason ban and a litany of other sanctions
Friday brought a real NCAA bombshell: Oklahoma State was served a one-year postseason ban for 2021 among a laundry list of other impactful charges, including fines, a loss of recruiting days and scholarships. Gary Parrish flies solo for this emergency episode, giving you quick analysis to what became the biggest story in college sports heading into the weekend. 06/04: How the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests have created a positive stir for change in college basketball
A tragedy in Minneapolis -- the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer -- has catalyzed and sparked worldwide protest efforts to weed out systemic racism. College basketball and its leaders can be agents for true, overdue change in this country. Today's podcast focuses on the conversations Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander have had with coaches and players in college basketball this week. They touch on first-hand accounts from black coaches and the systemic racism they've encountered at the hands of law enforcement in the past. Parrish wrote this week about Rhode Island coach David Cox. In New Mexico, a team came together to protest peacefully. Norlander at one point references this story, first published at CBS Sports in 2016, where coaches shared their stories of encounters with law enforcement. There is also a movement afoot, sparked by Georgia Tech assistant Eric Reveno (31:00), who tweeted earlier this week that the NCAA should make November's Election Day a mandatory day off for all of college athletics in order to afford players and coaches alike the opportunity and time to vote Eye on College Basketball' is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts, Castbox and wherever you listen to podcasts. 05/27: Mac McClung picks Texas Tech, but will he be eligible? Plus: Pissed off Bobby Hurley, and remembering Eddie Sutton's HOF career
How about this: we’ve got a six-topic college hoops pod for you in late May in the middle of a pandemic. And it’s 70-plus minutes at that. Dive in. The pod opens with GP and Norlander discussing Mac McClung’s commitment to Texas Tech and offer up their thoughts on if he’ll be eligible next season or will sit until 2021. Then the guys touch on Patrick Ewing and Georgetown for a moment before getting into a transfer waiver that was approved: Johnny Juzang will be immediately eligible at UCLA (16:40). His situation sheds light on why a few players might win on these decisions this offseason. From there, a discussion about Bobby Hurley (26:00) standing up for his wife and going after his athletic director. We want to alert our listeners that the Hurley portion of the podcast includes the topic of sexual assault, and the discussion and descriptions therein could be sensitive for some. From there, a recognition of the life and Hall of Fame career of Eddie Sutton (37:10), the late news Wednesday on no July recruiting (52:00) and more binge-watching TV musings from the guys (66:00). 05/21: Finally, some good news tied to sports and coronavirus: College players given the OK to return to campus for workouts starting June 1
We have encouraging news to pass along: many college basketball and college football players will be permitted to return to campus for social distance-aware workouts starting in early June. But first: the pod opens with the most urgent news of all. Both Gach is in the transfer portal. Then Parrish and Norlander get to discussing the first significant step in trying to get college sports on schedule (8:15), followed by a chat on the NCAA kicking the transfer-rule can into 2021 (30:15) and wrapping with some discussion on a top-10 team losing a player to the NBA process (44:00) and a tantalizing Trivia Time! 05/13: The Zion Williamson story that have plenty of Duke haters hoping the NCAA will somehow manage to punish Coach K's program
College basketball's had some interesting headlines the past few days, huh? A pandemic isn't slowing talking points or salaciousness in this sport, no way. Today's ep opens up with some quarantine catchup, which then segues into Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander discussing a question Parrish asked this week: if professors aged 60-and-up are being advised to not return for in-person teaching on campuses in the fall, then where does that leave the many college coaches of that age? From there, the guys get into the buzzed-about situation with Zion Williamson's (38:15) former marketing agent, who is countersuing against Williamson and agency CAA, and with that, there have been some leading questions -- but not allegations -- in what could eventually bring about depositions. The guys blend this topic with Kansas (58:00) and its battle with the NCAA, then somehow get into a bizarre basketball colloquialism of GP's. 05/04: Next up in the NCAA's notice of allegations assembly line: The Louisville Cardinals
Monday brought yet another big headline for college basketball. It's the offseason, coronavirus is still very much a threat to the United States, but the news cycle in college hoops will now slow. Louisville announced it had received its notice of allegations from the NCAA. There is one Level I allegation and a few more Level II charges, including a notable one against former coach Rick Pitino. This episode gets into the news and provides a bit more clarity on what's to come for Louisville and why this case is different from every other one under the broader umbrella of NCAA infractions cases tied to the Department of Justice's probe into college hoops recruiting. 🚨We have a replacement for Danny Manning at Wake Forest: It's East Tennessee State coach Steve Forbes (04/30 Emergency Podcast)
Podcasts on back-to-back days because we love ya that much. On Thursday Wake Forest completed its five-day coaching-search process by deciding that ETSU caoch Steve Forbes will be the one to replace Danny Manning. This emergency pod is dedicated almost entirely to that, in addition to a potentially messy situation that awaits Wake Forest. It appears that the school is going to try and not pay Manning his $15 million buyout. Obviously Manning wants his money. As for Forbes, he amassed a 130-43 record with the Buccaneers and guided ETSU to the 2017 and NCAA Tournament. The team would have gone back this year if not for COVID-19 cancelling the Big Dance. Get informed on what could be the only major-conference coaching change of 2020 in college sports. 04/29: NCAA rubber-stamps that college players will be allowed to make money off their name, image and likeness beginning in 2021 -- but here's the catch
Wednesday was a historic day in NCAA history. The organization, through the power of its Board of Governors, announced that name, image and likeness legislation has been approved, with the vote going into action come January of 2021. There are obviously issues and criticisms, two of which stab at the heart of all of this, so Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander make it much clearer in the first 30 minutes just how much still needs to be done and where the NCAA is going to find itself in some trouble. There's some basketball to discuss as well. After Sunday's NBA Draft decision deadline (34:20), Norlander lists the eight biggest stay-or-go decisions that remain, plus five other really good players in the draft pool he thinks will inevitably return to college basketball. The podcast definitely loses the plot around the 52-minute mark, so you've got that to look forward to as well.
