Today on Extraordinary Women Radio, I’m excited to bring you this extraordinary woman – Guadalupe Briseno, a Latina Leader in Colorado’s Labor Movement in the 60s and 70s, and a 2020 Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Inductee. Her story is an essential chapter in the history of Colorado, the evolution of Latina feminist leadership, and the struggle for Chicano civil rights. The Kitayama Carnation Strike was one of the seminal events in 1969 that laid the foundation for the Chicano Movement in Colorado. The impact of the women-led social movement reverberated throughout the state within the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. But most importantly, Briseño and the Kitayama Carnation Strike demanded that women, as well as all laborers, be treated with the respect and dignity that they deserved. Fundamental human rights were at the heart of their demands – the same rights that are the foundation of many of the social justice movements today: equal-pay-for-equal work, immigration rights, anti-human trafficking, and the “Me Too” movement. Lupe Briseño, her companions and their role in the Kitayama Carnation strike empowered Latinas in the civil rights, labor, feminist, education, and social justice movements of the 1960s and 70s. Her actions and leadership are the shoulders upon which current Latina leaders stand. “The women were very strong. You’ll be surprised when the women make a stand.” – Guadalupe Briseno Let’s meet Guadalupe Briseno! I belong to a secret Facebook group of about 20,000 women called the FEMPS… you have to get invited to this group by someone already in the group… and it is therefore, the most extraordinary group of women! Last month, there was a post from Manouschka Guerrier. Hey Femps I’m heading to Colorado May 25th for about 10 days shooting my docuseries #FaceReality & looking to interview women in the cannabis, brewery & food industry. Anyone down to meet & share your story or know anyone in these industries to link me up with? Pam Houston: Author of Deep Creek: Finding Hope In The High Country and Cowboys Are My Weakness – 107

I am excited to introduce today’s Extraordinary Women Radio guest, Pam Houston: Author of Deep Creek: Finding Hope In The High Country and Cowboys Are My Weakness. Pam is one of my favorite authors of all time! I read Pam’s book, Cowboys Are My Weakness, many, many years ago. Her books a series of short stories about her life – so many which mirrored my own life at that time – and her fun writing style made me feel like I was in the room with her. Fast forward all these years later, and one of my clients casually asks, “Have you ever read any Pam Houston books? She has a new book out that made me think of you.” “OMG – yes I know who she is! I love her writing!” And I instantly proceeded to order her most recent book, Deep Creek: Finding Hope in the High Country. Deep Creek tells Pam’s story of finding her ranch in Creede, CO. At 31 years old, she was fresh off a tour promoting her book, Cowboys Are My Weakness. ,She had “no job, no place to lie except her North Face tent.” On an impulse and a good instinct, she spent her royalties on a 120-acre ranch near Creede, Colorado. It was more than she could afford, and required more maintenance than she could manage. And yet, 25 years later, it’s the piece of land that’s defined the largest part of her life. Deep Creek tells the remarkable story of “that girl who dared herself to buy a ranch, dared herself to dig in and care for it, to work hard enough to pay for it, to figure out what other people mean when they use the world ‘home.”’ So you can imagine how excited I was when I reached out to Pam as I was reading Deep Creek, and said – hey can I feature you on Extraordinary Women Radio – and within minutes she emailed back and said “Sure!” What’s really fun for me, is I’ve trail ridden in the mountains above Pam’s ranch. This is deep high country, and it is where my father’s ashes are spread, high atop a mountain range, 16 miles from any roads. This country is wild, rugged and magically spirit-filled. I feel Pam’s love for this land. It truly was a delight to feature Pam in this interview. She is also the author of Contents May Have Shifted, Waltzing the Cat, the novel, Sight Hound, and a collection of essays, A Little More About Me. Her stories have been selected for volumes of Best American Short Stories, The O. Henry Awards, The 2013 Pushcart Prize, and Best American Short Stories of the Century. She is the winner of the Western States Book Award, the WILLA award for contemporary fiction, The Evil Companions Literary Award and multiple teaching awards. She co-founded the literary nonprofit Writing By Writers, is a professor of English at UC Davis, teaches in The Institute of American Indian Art, and at writer’s conferences around the country and the world. You’re going to learn more about it in today’s interview, but first, let me tell you how I met Kate. Five years ago I said yes to a conference on the spur of moment knowing that I was meant to be there. That decision forever changed my business and my life. We had to apply to attend this conference – as the speaker list was stellar: the CEO of Whole Foods, John Mackey, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Lynne Twist , Ken Wilbur, Blake Mycoskie – the CEO of Toms Shoes, Allanis Morsette, Michael Franti, Tom Chi – the creator of Google Glass, Jack Canfield… and many, many more. The lineup was incredible. The message was powerful. “It’s time to redefine what success means.” The woman who directed and produced this conference was Kate Maloney, and I knew the moment I met her that she was a woman I needed to know more. Kate is a visionary… a movement maker and a woman with a passion for changing the way we looked at success! Over the course of the 4 days that I spent at conference, I was inspired to #RaiseUP how I was showing up the world. It’s where the seeds of my Extraordinary Women Connect & Extraordinary Women Ignite events were planted. It’s where the seeds of the podcast first gave birth. Shortly after, I wrote my own purpose statement that said… “I want to help 1 million women step into their passion and purpose and make the impact that they desire in the world.” Kate had seeds planted at this conference as well, although as she shares in our interview today – the vision would come to her very organically in the years that followed… A movie… a movement… We Rise Up – because our world needs us. Kate did a premier showing of We Rise Up at the Sundance Film Festival and also in Boulder this year. The official launch of We Rise Up will be this Fall… and I am thrilled to share that we’re going to have a private showing of We Rise Up at my Extraordinary Women Connect event November 7, 8 and 9th in Golden Colorado and that Kate will be joining us as one of our keynote speakers. “Business is perhaps the most profound change agent on the planet. It’s a powerful force.” ~Kate Maloney In our interview today, Kate shares more about the We Rise Up movement and how it came to be. You will be inspired… be sure to go out to the We Rise Up The Movie on their Facebook page or on their Web Site. Facebook page and join in the conversation. Then join us in November at Ignite and apply some of Kate’s magic to your world. Kate Maloney Show Notes Let’s meet Kate Maloney – the producer and founder of We Rise Up – the Movie and the Movement.

Dr. Temple Grandin: Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Inductee, Animal Science Professor, Livestock Industry Consultant and Autism Spokesperson – 102.

I’m excited and honored to bring you today’s Extraordinary Women Radio guest, Dr. Temple Grandin, a Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame Inductee. In addition to being a world-renowned animal scientist, consultant, author, inventor, lecturer, and designer of livestock-handling facilities, Dr. Grandin is also a leading specialist and lecturer on autism spectrum disorder, a brain condition that she herself has had since birth. In our interview today, Dr. Grandin tells her own personal story of finding the boldness and guts to do the great things in her life. We talk about how horses saved her life and how horses can impact our society, especially our kids – something that is so important right now. She shares her wisdom on the different spectrums of thinking that people have, and how labeling our in kids so quickly can be harmful. Dr. Grandin shares her story of how she led change in the very male dominated world of agriculture and how she overcame her fear of speaking, as she speaks all around the world today. Dr. Grandin is a legend in her own right. More than half the cattle in Colorado, the United States, and Canada dwell in humane livestock-handling facilities designed by Colorado State University (CSU) animal sciences professor Temple Grandin. Grandin’s extraordinary relationship with animals began with horses when she was a girl. During summers on her aunt’s cattle ranch, Grandin’s interactions with farm animals taught her lifelong coping skills that helped her overcome difficulties in communicating with people. For example, she invented a machine for calming herself that resembled squeezing systems used to calm cattle during branding. Her mother and aunt pushed her to develop her special talents despite the conventional wisdom in the early 1960s that autistic people could not lead mainstream lives. Grandin has shared her vast expertise in livestock handling in hundreds of industry publications, book chapters, technical papers, and scholarly journal articles. Her best-selling Animals in Translation is one of seven books she has authored on animal behavior and autism. Thinking in Pictures and Other Reports from My Life with Autism describes her unique thinking process, which is based more on visual images than on words and language. Grandin argues that many animals share this perspective, enabling her to foster practical approaches to human-animal interactions that have revolutionized the cattle-handling industry. Grandin generously supports graduate students at CSU and offers individual advice to young people on a daily basis. Time magazine listed her as one of its 100 most influential people in 2010, and the national media have interviewed her extensively, including on 60 Minutes, in The Wall Street Journal, and on National Public Radio. As a female trailblazer in an all-male industry, Grandin has used her well-known reputation to help others break through barriers of sexism and prejudice against persons with autism and bring about a fresh appreciation for all people. “Autism is an important part of who I am, which I don’t want to change. But this is not my primary identity.” ~ Dr. Temple Grandin To learn more about Dr. Temple Grandin, you can follow her on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. Dr. Temple Grandin Show Notes *** The Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame mission is to inspire by celebrating and sharing the enduring contributions of Colorado’s distinctive women. To achieve this, the Hall educates the people of Colorado about the stories of the women who shaped our state and the nation’s history with courage, leadership, intelligence, compassion, and creativity. Their talents, skills, struggles, and contributions form a legacy that the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame is dedicated to protecting. Kami is honored to partner with the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame, sharing the stories of their Inductees. You can listen to other Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame interviews here!

Honeybee Henderson – Spiritual Psychologist, Ceremonialist and Mystic Called to Teach Yoga in the Middle East – 098

Today I’m bringing you a mystical gift with Honeybee Henderson as my guest on Extraordinary Women Radio. Honeybee joins us from Amman Jordan where she has been called to teach yoga in the Middle East. Honeybee is Spiritual Psychologist, a Ceremonialist, a Mystic and has traveled the corners of the world in search of the greatest tools to align to the true Self. I personally was excited to hear more about Honeybee’s pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago. As she shares with us, “the Camino is only one piece of the puzzle. Over the last 4 years, I have been plucked from my home, and sent around the globe on a mission to empower women. I never know exactly where I am going next, or what waits for me around the corner. This is how I have been thrust into flow.” And so we jam about being in flow. We jam about the value of being a woman and of learning how to relax the mind, the control mechanism, the nervous system… to allow more energy to move through us! If we, as women, start learning how to listen inwardly to that small inner voice, called intuition, each woman will be able to live a life on purpose. This is Honeybee’s dream. Honeybee blends over 20 years of ancient practices with modern-day science to support people in attaining and maintaining alignment, a state of consciousness that allows connection to Flow. She is an active seeker and student of shamanic traditions, yoga, tantra, NLP and Spiritual Psychology. She draws on the wisdom collected from saints and sages, Mother Nature and mystics, science and technology to support full activation of the human potential. “If you’re a ‘yes’, go on full YES and you don’t need to worry about it. If you’re a ‘no’, it’s simply a no. It doesn’t mean it’s bad or it’s wrong for you. It just means simply it may not be the right time.” – Honeybee Henderson To learn more about Honeybee Henderson, you can follow her on her website: www.honeybeehenderson.com or follow her on Facebook or Instagram. Michele Ashby – Changemaker On a Mission to Get 1000 Women on Corporate Boards – 096

Today’s Extraordinary Women Radio guest is Michele Ashby, a woman on a mission to get 1000 women placed on corporate boards. She is the President and Founder of ACE LLC (Ashby Consulting Enterprises) & CDI LLC (Corporate Directors Int’l). Currently, there are only 2 women for every 10 board seats sitting on corporate boards across the US and Canada. Michele is on a mission to change this – to bring that ratio into a 50/50 balance, and to do it in a much faster timeline than that of our current trajectory of change… which, as she shares with us in this interview, would take 70 years! I believe in her work. We talk about her personal journey to public boards – working in two male-dominated fields – mining and finance. Michele has served on six corporate boards over 18 years and is currently an Independent Director for McEwen Mining Inc., MUX:NYSE, and MENE Inc., MENE:TSXV, as well as a subject matter expert on corporate boards, a key note speaker and an executive business consultant. She interviewed 200 women over 18 months and has found the gaps that can keep women from achieving board status, and this research became the foundation for her ACE Board Training For Women – with the goal of training 1000 women for corporate boards and the Corporate Directors Int’l Board Certification Exam, which certifies candidates for Corporate Board service. Her program teaches women how to get on boards, how to behave in the board room and financial and legal acumen. It also teaches women how to build their board resume – which is very different than a traditional resume, translating your experiences into the executive vernacular. “Stand out – by how you work and what you do for people.” ~Michele Ashby Michele is an author of 3 books and a former ultra-athlete. Michele is the first woman in North America to row 24 hours on a Concept 2 rowing machine – a total of 211,036 meters in 24 hours. Most recently, Michele was named as one of the Top 25 Most Powerful Women in Business in Colorado for 2019 by the Colorado Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Ashby has extensive non-profit and trade association board experience. Michele also founded Dani’s Foundation, in memory of her daughter, Dani Stell, which contributed over $1 million for Ewing’s Sarcoma cancer research over 15 years. She has also served as a Board member and Chair of the Board of the Oncology Board at the Children’s Hospital Colorado.
