Frederick Dale Bruner is a theologian and author of several works, including "A Theology of the Holy Spirit," his multi-volumed commentaries on the Gospels of Matthew and John and most recently a shorter commentary on the Letter to the Romans (all published by Eerdmans) . Dr Bruner has received degrees from Princeton and the University of Hamburg and brings his deep learning into every page that he writes and each Sunday School that he teaches. He discusses the difference between the giving and taking of classroom instruction and the pastoral proclamation of preaching, as well as his ongoing efforts towards fluency in Hebrew as he works on his upcoming book on Isaiah 53. His writing is well-researched, historically informed, and displays a genuine love for the church, and a heart-felt devotion to our Lord Jesus Christ. Dr Uche Anizor speaks with Mike Neglia about two distinct categories of apathy that we as preachers need to contend with, first: the spiritual apathy of our own congregations, how can we awake our hearers out of their dullness and indifference with the truth and power of God’s Word? And the second, and more insidious form of apathy that we must overcome is far more personal: what about us!? The Bible makes sense in its deepest and richest capacity only when we read it through Jesus shaped goggles. When we see all of it through the lens of its Main Character - it should cause us to preach explicitly Christian sermons.Mike Neglia (with some help from Clay Worrell) explains, shows and tells how to preach Gospel centered sermons that proclaim the gospel from every passage at our in-person training event in Costa Mesa, California. After graduating Bible college in Siegen, Germany in the summer of 2002, Mike flew to London, then hitchhiked across the UK and over to Ireland and finished up in the city of Cork. He helped out with Calvary Chapel Cork for a few weeks of summer outreaches and intended on leaving, but the pastor asked him to stay on “for a little bit longer.” He stayed in Cork as a full-time missionary youth outreach coordinator/assistant for more than two years. In 2005 the pastor felt called by the Lord to go elsewhere (New Zealand) and asked if Mike and Rachel would consider staying on and taking over the church. There are right and wrong ways to include personal stories and anecdotes in our sermons. Dr Adam Copenhaver helps us to think through this minefield and shows us some of the right ways to talk about ourselves, and the stories that we SHOULD include. When preaching to congregations that are made up of varying levels of education stories become even more important for turning abstract concepts into concrete realities. Adam Copenhaver has experience both as a Bible scholar and as a local church pastor. He studied first at Grace College and Theological Seminary in Winona Lake, IN, earning a BA in Biblical studies (2001) and an MDiv in Pastoral Ministries (2003). After serving for a few years as a local church pastor, Adam pursued further theological training. He studied first at Westminster Theological Seminary, where he earned a ThM degree in Old Testament (2009). His studies at Westminster focused especially on hermeneutics (Biblical interpretation) and he did research on how the book of Psalms is used in the New Testament. Adam then shifted to New Testament and completed a PhD at the University of Aberdeen, Highland Theological College (2012).Adam is currently the pastor of the  Grace Church of Mabton in Mabton, WA, where his ministry focuses especially on the teaching and preaching of God’s Word. As a pastor, he focuses especially on God’s saving work in Christ and strives to make Christ the center of the church’s ministry and practice.His publications include Reconstructing the Background of Paul's Rhetoric in the Letter to the Colossians (T&T Clark, 2018); What Is Christian Marriage: Notes for Developing a Biblical Theology of Marriage and Sexual Ethics (2016); and Translating Colossians Clause-by-Clause: An Exegetical Guide (2016). Growing up, Christian faith was the last thing on his mind as he pursued pleasure, relationships, and a musical career as the source of his identity. It wasn't until he heard and received the gospel of Jesus Christ that the illusion of a self-centered life was shattered. In its place, Tim experienced forgiveness and newness of life with God. Even though he then enrolled in a Bible college, he had no intention of pursuing pastoral ministry until a fresh reading of Romans 10 ("How shall they hear without a preacher?") opened his eyes to God's calling on his life. Shortly after that, he married Lindsey and moved forward in vocational ministry, with a passion for urban church planting growing in his heart. In 2004, Tim and Lindsey believed that God had called them to Los Angeles to plant a church. So they moved to Hollywood, and as they started meeting with others in small prayer gatherings, God began to change lives and build a church for His glory. Since then, Reality LA has become a thriving church in Hollywood, seeking the city's renewal through the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Tim's first two books, Better: How Jesus Satisfies the Search for Meaning and The Truth About Lies, were projects which came from lessons learned while living and pastoring at Reality LA. Looking back, it's clear that it has been nothing, but the sheer grace of God at work as the good news of Jesus has changed lives in Los Angeles. Ten years later, the Chaddick's believe that God has called them again — this time to London.The Chaddick’s connection to London started back in the early 2000s through involvement with various UK churches and continued through a relationship with various leaders, pastors, and friends. In 2015, a prayerful process amongst the Reality church-planting pastors culminated in a shared call to send Pastor Tim and his family to start a church in London as part of the Reality family of churches. Over the next five years, Reality Church London was planted and established as a city-center church focused on the gospel and reflecting the diversity of the city. And in 2020, Tim and his family sensed a change of season was on the horizon, which led them to prayerfully make a move back to California and take up a role amongst the leadership team at Reality Ventura.Tim currently serves as the Pastor for Preaching at Reality Ventura and is active in speaking at churches, conferences and helping leaders start and maintain new churches and fulfill their call to be effective on mission in their cities. He and his wife live in Ventura County with their three daughters Lily, Phoebe, and Paige. Jon Geraci is the lead Pastor of Calvary South Denver.Jon was born in Upland, California and grew up in a Christian home. It wasn’t until his freshman year in High school that the Lord got a hold of his life. It was then that he surrendered everything to Jesus.“I was in Jr. High when I started my rebellion. Sean Gilliam serves as a lay preacher, Bible teacher and elder at White Fields Community Church in Longmont, Colorado, where he teaches Bible classes and occasionally fills the pulpit on Sunday mornings. In his career, Sean works full-time in real estate. Originally from the Chicago area, Sean studied at Eastern Illinois University and University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating with a Master of Social Work.  While working in this field for many years, Sean took some time off to go to South Africa to serve as a missionary to further pursue vocational/lay ministry.  While serving there, Sean earned a Layman’s Bible Certificate at Baptist Bible College of KwaZulu-Natal. And then I remember thinking - “God, If this happened in me maybe He could use me for this to happen in others?”The first time I heard expository preaching I sat in the front row and just sat there weeping. I literally felt my inner man being nourished. I felt the Word of God build my heart. And I remember thinking “ If I could keep the passion of the Pentecostals with this kind of preaching from the text that would be the thing.” Those are the two great things that have marked me ever since. The gift that expository preaching gave me was like “Dear God, if he can do this with 5 verses in Hebrews - look how fat the book is?! How much of this stuff is in there?! I want to study this book. And I want to know the God behind this text!” It was revelation and wonder. That’s the gift it gave me. A trap I see many people fall into is self-righteously judge the season they were in before, rather than integrate the best of it and do something fresh. At the heart of any human system (theological, philosophical, etc.) there is a “sacred core”. And until you acknowledge and respect it you’re never going to persuade somebody around it. And so you have to, with honor, touch the sacred core before persuasion can happen in any way. And most people assault the sacred core and wonder why they get resistance rather than acknowledging it and then moving towards the conversation. You don’t have to affirm what others believe to acknowledge their sacred core. The Bible doesn’t exist to make gay people straight. The Bible exists to make dead people alive. We are all coming to Jesus from various cultural positions and dispositions. And so my message is that Jesus Christ wants to change you in ways that are way more threatening than your orientation if you really want to call him Lord.New York is nowhere as near as distinct as it used to be because the world has been flattened through social media and shared media outlets. There are still differences, but there is a similar pattern throughout across the world.The Master starts with the Student. The Teacher starts with the Text. If the goal is “how do I communicate this to you”, you don’t start with “this is what it says”. You start with “this is where you’re at”.And then “how do I get this to you?” But if you only preach to where people are and what they want - they’ll never mature. But if you only preach what people

Conor Berry speaks with Mike Neglia about teaching and preaching the Bible with a pastoral heart that has been informed by formal counselling training. From there the Lord called him to the mission field in Siegen, Germany, where he met his wife, Hannah. After marriage and a daughter, Fae, the Lord led them to plant a church in Bristol, England. There the Lord blessed them with three boys, Flint, Dane, and Otis. After eight years on the mission field, the Lord called them back to their home church in 2015. "When I teach I want to keep in mind the GENRE of what I am teaching. I want to remember what the conventions are of that genre and how do they inform my understanding of this text? I’m trying to follow the logic of the author, how he structured what he wrote, and the questions he’s anticipating from his audience and how he answers them."  Kristie Anyabwile speaks with Mike about the role that genre plays in interpreting a passage's meaning, as well as the importance of feedback and peer review in the preparation process. She is married to Thabiti, a published author, bible teacher, and speaker. One of Kristie’s first opportunities to teach was at a women’s retreat. Despite not feeling fully prepared she took the opportunity and heard what initially seemed to be great feedback. Many of the women who attended complimented Kristie on her expositional teaching. Soon after, Kristie realized that there was so much more to teaching the Bible than accuracy. You have to reach the hearts of your audience. Since then, Kristie has grown into a more balanced teacher and credits a lot of this growth to the team of people she has around her. She’s focused on finding people to give her feedback from many points of view. This team approach has helped Kristie hone her delivery to be theologically sound, astute and precise, while remaining relatable to her audience. As an author, Kristie also places a big emphasis on genre when reading the bible or preparing a study. Genre provides context, structure and interpretation to the stories and passages she teaches. Kristie emphasizes the importance of understanding how the genre of the passage should inform the process of preparing to teach. "The Bible is one story, but people often think it’s one “thing”.  So when they read it they say “well, you read the Bible literally.” But if we read the whole Bible literally we would not be keeping genre in mind because, for example, we know that we don’t read things like poetry literally. Poetry gives us imagery, metaphors, and word pictures and they aren’t meant to be read literally. So we don’t read every book of the Bible literally, but we should read every book of the Bible “literarily”, meaning according to its literary genre. Sam’s first time talking about the Bible in public was to his youth group about a year after giving his life to the Lord. He’s thankful it was a young audience because, as he recalls, it was a disaster. He was young with no real guidance and had no idea what he was doing. Sam gave his first real sermon while he was in college. This was a very different experience for him. He felt the weight of preaching and experienced his own transformation during his preparation. Sam had a sense of the Lord speaking through him. Over the years, Sam’s sermon style has evolved. He was recently preparing for a sermon text that he had preached on before. Sam pulled out a sermon from 10-12 years ago and found many truths, but felt it lacked Jesus. As a young preacher, Sam often did his best to explain the passage and transfer the data of his research to his listeners. He now has a sharper focus resulting in more exegesis on the cutting room floor. Sam wants to spend more time talking about Jesus, framed by the text of the sermon. He explains teaching is about helping someone understand the text, but preaching is what he wants the heart of his audience set upon.Sam also hits on a number of topics in this podcast including sermons that interest non-believers, meeting in person vs online, and hand writing his notes. When we pray, God listens. When we pray from the pulpit, the entire gathered assembly listens as well. Pat Quinn believes that our public prayers should be thoughtful and instructive, as well as personal and devotional. He speaks with Mike about preparation for praying, as well as preparation for preaching. Pat’s first sermon was in 1975 on Psalm 145, and the greatness of God. He doesn’t remember much about it but it probably went on pretty long. Pat doesn’t recall if he was asked or volunteered but his first sermon was on a Sunday morning. This was a bit daunting at the time but he thinks it went pretty well. Pat doesn’t remember specific feedback but assumes it was charitable as his congregation is very kind. Pat also shared some great incites regarding feedback after sermons. Don’t give extended feedback right after the service, but perhaps a brief word of encouragement is helpful. Pat recalls many well meaning, older saints who provided some tips right after a service but they were often a downer. Pat models his critiques after Jesus  addressing the churches in Revelation. Start with positive, share concerns or issues, and end with positive. Music was Pat’s first ministry and another big part of his journey as a minister was as a high school leader for 30 years. This wasn’t exactly a training ground for preaching but helped him hone his skills as a communicator. High schoolers have a great bologna detector and it’s essential to be authentic and honest with them. Pat’s experience as a youth leader shaped his preaching to sound like he’s speaking from the heart rather than reading from his detailed notes. Pat also shares great insights on preparation with regards to sermon prep and prayer. While there is room for spontaneity, he looks at how an intentional approach can produce prayers and sermons that hold true to the spirit of the Kingdom.  Pat is the Director of Counseling Ministries at University Reformed Church, where he applies his love for the gospel to counseling, training counselors, serving as an elder, consulting, preaching, and occasional worship leading. Al Pittman is the Senior Pastor of Calvary Worship Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as well as the author of several books and a musician.Al was born in Panama City, Florida. His father was a career soldier, and he traveled extensively as a child, finally settling in Colorado Springs in the 1970’s. Al realized God’s call on his life at that time and began touring as the bass guitarist of a Christian band called “The Rays of Light.” Al earned a degree in Biblical Studies from Nazarene Bible College in Colorado Springs and later joined the staff of Calvary Chapel of Colorado Springs. In the 1990’s Al joined the staff of Calvary Albuquerque as an assistant pastor and worship leader. In the spring of 1997, the Lord called Al and his family back to Colorado Springs to pastor Calvary Worship Center. Wayne Taylor is the founding pastor and has been the lead Pastor of Calvary Fellowship Seattle for 41 years. During this time, God used their church to help plant over 50 churches, about half locally, and half globally. Recently, Wayne has transitioned to be an itinerate Bible teacher, a support minister to the church, and Director of Calvary Chapel Bible College Seattle. Being a member of the Calvary Chapel movement, Pastor Chuck Smith was often the standard many were compared to. Pastor Wayne recalls on early sermon he delivered as a young pastor, shortly after planting his church. He doesn’t remember the subject but vividly recalls a woman who approached after the service and told Wayne he did pretty good but not as good as Pastor Chuck ! Despite the lackluster review, Wayne was not discouraged and pressed on as a new pastor. As young man, Wayne was a musician and felt an early call to evangelism. He loves connecting with people on an individual basis and has adapted his preaching style to allow him to be a more dynamic speaker. One way Wayne accomplishes this is by memorizing large portions of biblical text. This allows him to “read” the word without breaking eye contact with his audience. While quoting scripture, Wayne describes being in the mindset of the Apostle Paul and the joy of delivering the gospel in a more intimate way. While Wayne does have complete sermon notes, his ability to preach without reading them allows him to gauge the congregation. This fluidity often allows for the Holy Spirit to impact the moment so Wayne can deliver a unique message each and everytime he preaches. With an evangelist heart behind all of his sermons, this ability to be in the moment with his audience helps Wayne to really be honest and powerful with his content.
