Expat Chat Episode 128 - Australian Arrival Card Considerations for Expats
Welcome to the one hundred and twenty eighth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat talk about the incoming passenger arrival card that you need to complete when landing at an Australian airport. With many Australian expats looking to return home over the Christmas holidays to visit family and friends there is often confusion as to what box you tick on the passenger arrival card before you land. In the past there was quite a lot of apathy towards these cards but in todays digital world and with government departments linked electronically what you declare on these cards can make a dramatic difference as to whether it is plain sailing or greater scrutiny by government departments including the ATO. We have seen over the last couple of years these cards being used as evidence in court by the ATO when trying to argue a Australian expats residency. In this episode we run through the following topics: • What options are available to select? • Which box should I tick? • What happens to these cards after they are collected? That's why we started the Australian Expat Financial Forum. Its a place that Australian expats can share their expat financial war stories as well as ask questions that we can answer on this podcast. In this episode we run through the following topics: • How to setup a will across multiple jurisdictions? • How to setup for retirement when you don't know which country you will be in? • Can a Australian expat gift a property and not pay any tax? • What are the ATO obligations for drawing on a US 401k when residing in Australia? Welcome to the one hundred and fifteenth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. With the Australian Federal government recently releasing the annual federal budget there were many hopes and expectations of tax reform and restructuring to prepare the Australian economy for the years ahead but unfortunately none of that was to come to occur. This years federal budget is all about positioning the Labor government for a election which maybe called as early as October this year. The message they tried to get across was that we are fiscally responsible and you can trust us to manage the economy but with stimulatory policies in a number of areas we will see pressure on inflation and a reasonable chance that either interest rates wont fall within 12 months and a small chance of a rate rise In this episode we run through the following topics: • What were the major announcements? • Do any of the announcements affect expats? • Is there an update on the proposed tax residency rule changes? Expat Chat Episode 114 - What Is The US Exit Tax & How Does It Affect Australians
Welcome to the one hundred and fourteenth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. This episode was recorded before the recent floods in Dubai so it didn't get released in sync and you may notice us referring to a different episode number but as it addresses such an important topic for Australian expats in the United States we wanted to make sure it received some airtime. In this episode we run through the following topics: • What is the US Exit Tax? • Which expats does it affect? • How do they calculate the Exit Tax for expats? Expat Chat Episode 111- Steps To Become A Non-Resident For Tax Purposes
Welcome to the one hundred and eleventh episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about how to qualify to become a non-resident and what is the actual process that Australian expats must follow to notify the ATO. Qualifying to become a non-resident for tax purposes with the ATO isn't as simple as you think. With the current rules dating back to 1936 (when you used to jump on a ship to become a expat) there is some interpretation required which is why the Board of Taxation recommended the Australian government update the residency rules and we should see this play out in the next year or two. We also run through the mechanics of actually notifying the ATO that you are now a non-resident and the crucial steps you need to follow. In this episode we run through the following topics: • How do I become a non-resident for tax purposes with the ATO? • What are the new residency rules and how do they apply to current and future Australian expats? • What is the process of notifying the ATO that I have permanently left Australia and become a non-resident for tax purposes? The 2023 calendar year had it all with worldwide discussions about hard landings, interest rate movements, recessions and the conflict between Israel and Hamas. In this episode we run through the following topics: • What are some of the takeaways from 2023? • Did investors make money in 2023? • Question time from our members in our Facebook group Links that we discussed in this episode include: • Upcoming Webinars - https://atlaswealth.com/events • Facebook Group - Australian Expat Financial Forum Facebook Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/Australianexpatfinancialforum • Ask Atlas - Have your questions answered on the podcast by clicking this link - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/questions-or-feedback-for-the-expat-podcast/ • Expat Mortgage Podcast - https://atlaswealth.com/news-media/australian-expat-podcasts/expat-mortgage-podcast/ If you like the content make sure you let us know by hitting the thumbs up and subscribing as well as providing some feedback in the comments below. Expat Chat Episode 107 - When Does An Australian Expat Need To Lodge A Tax Return
Welcome to the one hundred and seventh episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about when does an Australian expat need to lodge a tax return. There is a lot of conflicting information out there about this topic which causes the confusion amongst expats and the answer is that some Australians do need to lodge tax returns whilst others don't. Typically you are taxed in Australian on what is called Australian sourced income (for example rental income, termination payouts, deferred income from employer shares etc) so if you have earned this type of income you will have to lodge a tax return. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Does an Australian expat need to lodge a tax return? • What qualifies as Australian sourced income? • What if my trading platform or bank does not know I am overseas? • Is a HECS/HELP debt lodgement the same as a tax return? Expat Chat Episode 106 - Expats Are Still Confused Regarding The Main Residence Exemption
Welcome to the one hundred and sixth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we revisit the topic of the Main Residence Exemption and the confusion amongst Australian expats that still surrounds the changes that came into play on the 1st of July 2020. With many Australian expats owning property when they leave Australia, especially their former principle place of residence, how this asset is treated when you are a non-resident for tax purposes is completely different to that of an Australian tax resident. The premise behind the Main Residence Exemption is that you can live in a property that you make your principle place of residence, move out of it and rent the property for up to 6 years and should you chose to sell it in that period you do not pay capital gains tax. However should an Australian expat follow this path not only will they pay capital gains tax when they are a non-resident for tax purposes but they will potentially pay it all the way back to the day that they purchased it, not when they left the country. In this episode we run through the following topics: • How does the Main Residence Exemption work? • How do the changes in 2020 affect Australian expats? • Sample scenarios of Australian expats retaining or selling their former principle places of residence. Expat Chat Episode 102 - The Importance Of Timing For Australian Expats
Welcome to the one hundred and second episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about why timing can make the difference of thousands, tens of thousands and sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars for Australia expats. The nature of an Australian expat means that we are always moving, sometimes staying in one location longer then the other however what this moving means is that in order to optimise your finances you need to ensure that your timing of events is structured in a way that ensures you don't experience any unintended consequences. Expat Chat Episode 100 - The Importance Of A Will For Expats
Welcome to the one hundredth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about the importance of wills and enduring powers of attorneys (EPOA's) for Australian expats. When we move overseas it is quite easy to forget about what would happen to our estates should the worst occur - a death of you or a loved one in the family. However its not until you are experiencing such a troubling time that you wished that these matters were addressed beforehand. Statistically speaking not many Australian residents have wills and the number of expats we meet are even less which is cause for concern. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Do I need to have a will as a Australian expat? • Do I need to have a will in each country that I hold a asset in? • If I am a beneficiary of a will and live overseas how will this be treated? Expat Chat Episode 99 - Why Some Expats Manage Their Finances Like Monopoly
Welcome to the ninety ninth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about why some expats manage their finances when they move abroad like they are playing monopoly. We saw a funny post on instagram the other day that said: "Imagine playing monopoly and never buying any assets or investments that generate income. Imagine you just went around collecting $200, giving your money to the rich and trying to stay out of jail". After reading this we thought that a lot of Australian expats chose to live their expat life like this, throwing away a great opportunity not only to travel and enjoy a great adventure but also to return to Australia with more money in the bank then when you left. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Why should Australian expats care about their finances? • What they can do to improve their situation? • What are some easy wins to make their time overseas successful financially? Expat Chat Episode 98 - When Should An Australian Expat Plan For Retirement
Welcome to the ninety eighth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about when should a Australian expat start planning for retirement. When Australians move overseas quite often their superannuation fund and the mechanisms behind saving for retirement tend to fall by the wayside as they focus on building their wealth using other vehicles. What a lot of people don't realise is that when they are living overseas and they are not contributing at least 10% of their income to superannuation unless they are saving this amount elsewhere they could be financially disadvantaged compared to their colleagues back in Australia. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Do I need superannuation if I am not retiring to Australia? • Can I contribute to my superannuation just before I retire? • What structures should I consider when retiring? • Can I utilise foreign pensions and social security? All depending on what country to intend to retire in will depend on whether there will be any local taxes applied to your allocated pension. The Australian superannuation system is unique when you compare it to savings plans and pensions around the world and it is one of the reasons why there maybe confusion overseas on whether it should be taxed or not. Expat Chat Episode 94 - Can A Expat Vote In The Upcoming Referendum?
Welcome to the ninety fourth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about the upcoming referendum that is being held in Australia next month and whether an Australian expat can and should vote. According to the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) an Australian expat is eligible to vote as an Overseas Elector as long as they are an Australian citizen over the age of 18 and are intending to return to Australia within the next 6 years. The next question is whether an Australian expat should vote and here we are not referring to them exercising their right to vote but moreso will it cause further complications with respect to their claim of being a non-resident for tax purposes with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Under the current tax residency rules if you were to vote the question of whether you would be classified as a tax resident is very grey and is one of the reasons the proposed tax residency have been recommended. In this episode we run through the following topics: • Can a Australian expat register to vote? • How does a Australian expat vote? • Where can a Australian expat vote? • Will voting as a Australian expat affect my non-residency status with the ATO? Welcome to the ninety third episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. Whether you have been working in Australia for 5 years or 15 years you would have accumulated some assets and making that move overseas can complicate your understanding of how to manage those assets due to the different rules you need to consider. There is also a fair bit of housekeeping you need to do before you move overseas but the good news is that not all of this has to be done before you jump on the plane and some of it can be done after you leave. In this episode we run through the following topics: • What happens to my super when I become an expat? • What should I do with my private health insurance? • What are my tax obligations to the ATO? • Should I remain on the electoral roll in Australia? • Do I keep my Australian drivers license? • Can I use Medicare as a Australian expat? • Do I have to update my address with banks and brokerages? • What is deemed disposal? Expat Chat Episode 88 - What Are The New Super Changes For The 2024 FY
Welcome to the eighty eighth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today’s Expat Chat we talk about the new super changes which are now in effect for the 2024 financial year. These changes impact current contribution amounts and caps, superannuation balances as well as what we can have in account based pension mode. The recent changes allow Australians to get more into their Superannuation funds, which is great news yet indexation was not applied to a lot of contribution types. We also discussed the notion of ‘Use it or lose it’ which applies to the catch up concessional contribution strategy, which has been in place since the 2019 financial year. Lastly, the downsizer contribution eligibility age has now been dropped to 55, which gives expats a greater chance to boosting super before age 60. In this episode we run through the following questions: • What the Transfer Balance Cap (TBC) is? • The changes applying to the TBC and what it means for those last minute contributions. • What the indexation means for the Concessional and Non-Concessional contribution caps? • An example of the catch-up concessional contribution strategy in practice • How the downsizer contribution operates and what the opportunity means for expats, as well as a brief client example. Expat Chat Episode 79 - Is Now The Time To Buy Australian Property?
Welcome to the seventy ninth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat. In today's Expat Chat we talk about whether now is the time for an Australian expat to purchase a property in Australia. With the recent pullback in property we are seeing a lot of property spruikers saying now is the time to buy but is it? The performance of the property market in the earlier part of this year surprised some with the sell off abating and this has been seen by some in the property industry as a sign that the market is turning however we liken it to that great saying of "one swallow doesn't make a winter" just like one month of positive returns doesn't mean the selling is finished. There are still many headwinds in the property market which include rising interest rates, rising inflation and the reset of over 800,000 fixed rate mortgages to variable rate mortgages in the coming months. In this episode we run through the following topics: • When should I purchase a property? • Has the sell off finished or is there more to come? • Does proeprty make sense as a investment strategy for Australian expats?
