To join the union or not to join the union? For some voice actors, that is the question. But maybe it doesn't have to be. Writing voice over marketing emails is hard enough of a task on it's own without having to worry about whether or not those emails are ever actually landing in the inbox of the desired recipient. There are things you can do when writing emails to help keep them out of the dreaded spam folder and get them into the inbox. Some of the red flags are a bit technical, but many of them are content related. It could be as matter of simply changing your subject line or cleaning up your email signature. After interviewing CEO's from four of the major online casting sites, it became clear there were a few issues that are universal, regardless of whether it's on Voice123, bodalgo, CastVoices or VOquent. Voice Actors seem to be making some of the same mistakes over and over and over again, and those mistakes are costing them voice over bookings. The site is based in the UK, and it works much differently from other online casting platforms. There are no membership fees, and no job posting board. When you submit an audition on a casting site or through an agent, it's reasonable to assume it's for an active project and the voice actor will be hired "soon." Like... the next day. Maybe the next week at most. And so many VO's obsessively check their casting profiles and inboxes waiting for the email to come that says they've booked. This is a great way to make yourself crazy, and it isn't necessarily an accurate reflection of voice over casting timelines. It's been ten years since I made the jump into voice over full-time and in that time, I've learned a lot of lessons along the way. Some harder than others.
