Gratitude is more than delighting in a gift; it is a feeling of happiness directed toward a person for giving you something good. Growing in our ability to consistently be grateful and express gratitude is not only life-changing but is part of becoming a mature disciple of Jesus. Living as a missionary is more about “being” than “doing”. Friendship and relationships are inseparably connected to the heart of God. We all know what anger looks and feels like. But most of us don’t know much about this emotion and where it comes from. So many people have never been taught basic life skills, and certainly not how to view all of life through the lens of the Gospel. Prayer was always meant to be a conversation with our heavenly Father, our Daddy. If you try and treat life and the rhythms in a missional community like a light switch, something you suddenly flip on in your lives, you’ll be disappointed and frustrated. We all have hidden idols in our life...big and small. An idol is anything more important to you than God, anything that absorbs your heart and imagination more than God, or anything you seek to give you what only God can give. One of the things that keep Christians from talking about their faith to their friends is the fear of sounding like a freak or being asked hard questions they can’t answer. Or they feel like they are supposed to “win” people over to their side of the discussion or they’ve failed. It’s easy to look across the auditorium–or across the room–and ask why the church and our small groups or missional communities are not more diverse. But are racial differences the only form of diversity there is? Church doctrines of grace and salvation, in some cases, may actually prevent us from creating an expectation that we are to be and make disciples. Do our existing models of evangelism and discipleship fail to produce true followers of Jesus? This week on the Lifeschool Podcast, we dive into the importance of recovering a robust view of the gospel and taking seriously the connection between conversion and discipleship with Bill Hull, a “discipleship evangelist” (I love that term!) who’s the author of a bunch of bestselling discipleship classics. A person can profess to be a Christian and yet still live under the impression that they don’t need to actually follow Jesus. Being a follower and disciple is seen as an optional add-on, not a requirement. It is a choice, not a demand. Being a Christian today, unfortunately, has little connection with the biblical idea that we are formed into the image and identity of Christ. In This Episode You’ll Learn: A historical definition of “conversion” that you’ll find clarifying. Why conversion and discipleship are two sides of the same coin. Something isn’t working. More and more we’re seeing people leave the church because it seems less relevant to them, and they are not being discipled in the normal aspects of everyday life.
