With so many shifts and changes occurring in our lives as we enter motherhood it can become a very challenging time in out lives. We acknowledge how we all may be entering motherhood but it brings up different things for each of us and things surface differently for all of us. 76. Perinatal and Postpartum Mood Disorders with Dr. Jane Shomof

In this episode we talk with Dr. Jane Shomof about perinatal and postpartum mental health and how she helps moms navigate the early postpartum period. Dr. Jane Shomof is a licensed psychotherapist, perinatal mental health specialist, substance abuse & addiction specialist, a doctor of clinical psychology, and the founder and CEO of Bloome. We discussed her journey of entering motherhood and how she did “all the things” and had a very specific birth plan that she was handing out to everyone only to have her first birth, back in 2011, not go according to plan. At that point postpartum depression was the only diagnosis but she knew something else was going on. She had dealt with a combination of postpartum anxiety and postpartum OCD and learned over the course of a 6 year span in birthing her children that not much had changed. She now works to guide moms on a path to better understand maternal mood disorders and really rework their mindset for both birth and the postpartum period. She mentions how a birth experience that doesn’t quite go according to plan can lead to thoughts of failure in parenthood and be the perfect place for a mood disorder to occur. Directly from CDC website: Group B Streptococcus (group B strep, GBS) are bacteria that come and go naturally in the body. Most of the time the bacteria are not harmful, but they can cause serious illness in people of all ages. In fact, group B strep disease is a common cause of severe infection in newborns. While GBS disease can be deadly, there are steps pregnant women can take to help protect their babies. GBS Pregnant people should get a dose of Tdap during every pregnancy, preferably during the early part of the third trimester, to help protect the newborn from pertussis. 55. PCOS, Factor V Leiden, Breech Baby, and Intuitive Movement with Melissa Gambone

In this episode we talk with Melissa Gambone about her journey of becoming pregnant, having a breech baby which resulted in a cesarean at the start of the COVID pandemic, and how she personally helps other mamas work with their bodies through intuitive movement. Knowing that Melissa had Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), she was told by conventional doctors that it would be difficult to become pregnant so she switched to a more functional medical approach. She learned how to balance her hormones and gave her body time to heal. When attempting to get pregnant they successful got pregnant only after a few months of trying on their own. She also was aware that she had Factor V Leiden, which is a genetic blood clotting condition. Which resulted in need to use blood thinner injections daily during her pregnancy which increased to twice a day as she got closer to delivery. As her pregnancy progressed, it was determined that her baby was breech and at 39 weeks a cesarean was preformed to safely bring her little girl into this world. This was in March of 2020, which was the start of the COVID pandemic and caused a lot to change for her birth plan and the early months postpartum. The family also took part in a big move, from Pennsylvania to South Carolina, while Melissa was 6 months postpartum. Now, at 15 months postpartum Melissa uses her story to guide her in her business Motion Melissa where she helps other women, especially mamas, learn to be more intuitive with their movements.
