In Episode 207 I sit down with my friend Jereme Bounds. Jereme is someone I immediately took a liking to, he's a great human being and easy to talk to and get to know. His kids attend my jiu jitsu class and he recently pulled me aside seeking advice on pursuing health and fitness as he recently tipped the scales at over 300lbs. I shot him straight and told him what I'd recommend he changes, and he jumped all in. It's only been a week, and I know that's nothing in the grand scheme of things, but I want to highlight his story as he took those initial steps to change his ways because so many Americans are sitting in that purgatory and failing to get on the path. In Episode 206 I sit down with my Brother Johnny Martinez. Johnny and I first connected when he attended a Guns & Gis as a student. We then went to Costa Rica together to attend an Ayahuasca Ceremony and a true bond was formed! In Episode 204 I sit down with my friend Joshua Dukes. Joshua and I became friends online as we both walked a similar path as first responders that ultimately left the profession because of the Covid Pandemic! After we connected, we kicked the idea of a Maui Axis deer hunt together and last weekend he and his boys guided me and Zach on an unforgettable adventure! In Episode 202 I sit down with my friend and former Professor Marcus Buchecha Almeida. I trained under Buchecha from 2011-2013 and remain a teammate under the Checkmat banner to this day. We go all the back to the beginning of how Marcus found jiu jitsu and the long and arduous process of how he became an elite competitor. He went from wanting to quit jiu jitsu for having so many bad performances at competitions to becoming the most decorated jiu jitsu athlete of all time! Being part of the team and witnessing Buchecha's meteoric rise to superstardom is something I will cherish for life. What a time to live in Southern California with Checkmat. In Episode 200 I sit down with Kirk Davis. Kirk is part of an organization titled the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Puget Sound (or CAMPS). One of CAMPS main missions is assisting veterans in the transition from active duty to civilian life by assisting them in finding employment inside of the civilian workforce within the manufacturing industry. In Episode 197 I sit down with former Snohomish County Sheriff Adam Fortney. I've looked forward to this episode for quite some time because I believe Adam's leadership and common-sense approach as sheriff may have dramatically changed the trajectory of my life. He refused to enforce COVID lockdown measures in the county which I live and operate my business. In a time where many small business owners ended up in handcuffs, that wasn't happening here in Snohomish County, and I want to thank him again for choosing the hard right over the easy wrong. Showing courage in the face of tyranny will never be forgotten by many of us. When he stood up against the political elite, he painted a target on his back which all ensured they'd make sure his run as sheriff was a short one. In Episode 190 I sit down with Wil Ngotel. Wil has become my right-hand man at the academy coaching in both the kids and youth programs and helping in any capacity he can. I recently promoted him to brown belt last summer and it's been incredible watching the amount of pride and ownership that he carries as a leader on our mats. Wil moved over from the island of Saipan in 1993 and we go beyond jiu jitsu in this episode delving into his past and how he arrived at where he's at today. In Episode 187 I sit down with my Ukes! What the fuck is an Uke? An uke is the partner I use while teaching jiu jitsu to show the technique. This may not sound like a special position but as someone who's been teaching jiu jitsu for nearly a decade, I assure you it is! In Episode 174 I sit down with Russ Torgerson. Russ and I connected when he recently attended Guns and Gis last August. His story is fascinating as he was a coast guard rescue swimmer for more than a decade and then made the switch to being a coast guard pilot. He conducted the same missions but now just filled a different position inside the helicopter. Stephen has recently redefined himself with a new commitment to health, fitness, and an overall disciplined approach to life! He joined the team at 275lbs and in 5 months is already walking around at 230lbs, and he's just getting started! Stephen is a career Navy guy and coming up on retirement in the next year or so. Episode 168 I sit down with David Price and Johnny Martinez! David led part of the ayahuasca retreat I recently attended in Costa Rica. Episode 166 I sit down Retired SPD Lieutenant Jessica Taylor. Episode 160 I sit down with Lee Deckleman. Lee was on my team in 2004 when I was deployed to Ramadi, Iraq with Triple Canopy. That deployment was by far the most violent deployment of my entire life. Lots of ambushes, IEDs, and engagement with the enemy. We reminisce of all the crazy experiences we shared together and then delve into Lee's current mission where he has invested all his energy into becoming a yoga instructor.
