This is based on the idea of an approach to mindfulness that had roots in the west, as opposed to the more commonly known eastern practice that emerged from Buddhism. In 2007, he lived in southern Italy for a year while he researched and wrote his first book Metanoia, which presented the thesis that a western approach to mindfulness emerged during the middle ages in northern Italy. This approach was inspired by Gnostic-Christianity which re-emerged throughout Europe with the heretical Cathar. This western approach to mindfulness was inspired by the teachings from the Sermon of the Mount and in particular the Beatitudes. Dr. Dupuis is Social Anthropologist and Visiting Research Fellow at the Department of Anthropology at the University of Durham (U.K.) and a member of the "Hearing the Voice" program. "Hearing the Voice" is a large interdisciplinary study of voice-hearing featuring an international research team of academics from anthropology, cognitive neuroscience, history, linguistics, psychology, theology, clinicians, and others. In addition to shedding light on the relations between hearing voices and everyday processes of sensory perception, memory, language and creativity, the program explores why it is that some voices (and not others) are experienced as distressing, how they can cause change across the life course, and the ways in which voices can act as important social, cultural and political forces. Dr. Dupuis has conducted ethnographic surveys in Amazonian Peru for a decade, focusing on the globalization of the use of psychedelic substances.
