But what is Ecological Dynamics, and why is it now finding a prominent place in jiu-jitsu? If you were to Google "Ecological Dynamics for BJJ," you might be met with faces like Greg Saunders and Ed Ingamels. Both are incredibly intelligent and authorities in the relatively contemporary space. But honestly, both can use some terminology that can turn curious ears into confused minds. My ultimate goal with this conversation is to make the topic more palatable for those curious ears new to the topic. Today we have the incredible pleasure of speaking with Kristina Barlaan, a second-degree black belt under Caio Terra. Kristina initially did not find jiu-jitsu interesting after starting to train Muay Thai at Cesar Gracie's Gracie Fighter Academy. Her first experience with training jiu-jitsu was during a NoGi class; she did not initially enjoy it. A couple of months later, a friend convinced her to try jiu-jitsu a second time, and it stuck. It would be hard to tell from her infectious personality, but Kristina is very candid about her struggles with mental health, and she overcomes it for BJJ. Her perseverance in fighting her mental battles is inspiring; what she has accomplished adds to it. Even as a high-level competitor with a list of accolades anyone would be proud of doesn't stop Kristina's imposter syndrome from rearing its ugly face once in a while. Laurenz is currently a purple belt and the creative director for Hyperfly. He has been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 2009. Haisam's journey in jiu-jitsu has been anything but easy. Haisam is Ghana-born BJJ black belt out of Assembly Jiu-Jitsu in Detroit, Michigan. After leaving Ghana at 15 years old to live with his dad in Japan, Haisam found BJJ and never looked back. Haisam recently gained massive attention after submitting Roberto "Cyborg" Abreu in 1:14 at ADCC. Haisam realized his potential in jiu-jitsu when he was a purple belt and decided to take the leap and change schools to Carpe Diem in Toyko, Japan. Michael Currier is a BJJ black belt and Army vet and owns Impact Jiu-Jitsu Fountain Hills amounts many other things. Michael was active in numerous sports, from wrestling to skateboarding. He has a natural desire to compete and push his limits. He contributes much of his success in BJJ, contrary to what many think of gymnastics and not so much his wrestling. Michael was offered to do gymnastics at Penn State but decided to join the Army instead.
