I talk with Alex Seigel on how educational trips are a valuable part of a school's curriculum, providing students with transformative experiences and fostering intercultural understanding. And a great trip includes a balance of key sites and unique experiences, tailored to the interests and educational goals of the students. Adventure leaders and local experts play a crucial role in organising and guiding the trips, providing insights into the destinations and facilitating connections with local communities. These trips can have a long-lasting impact on students' lives and careers, and it is important for schools to assess and measure this impact. Ep 65The UK Election and the local/systemic change debate
In this episode, I muse on the recent UK general election and its implications for education. With the Labour Party's victory and Keir Starmer becoming Prime Minister, there’s a palpable sense of hope and excitement among many educators. I discuss my observations from the Festival of Education and reflect on how schools might navigate these changes.Drawing from my career in system-level leadership, I explore the importance of local leadership versus systemic change. Schools with a strong internal purpose and community engagement often weather changes more effectively. I share insights from my work with Efraim Lerner on our book, Change Starts Here, and our not-for-profit, Work Collaborative, emphasising the power of local decision-making in schools.Links & Resources: Work Collaborative: workcollaborative.comFestival of Education: Festival of Education This episode is supported by the International Curriculum Association. Ep 64LIVE: Suicide Education: An Urgent Issue
bonusThe conversation focuses on suicide education and the proposed changes in the UK curriculum to include suicide prevention training for students. The guests, Debi Roberts and Professor Zaffer Iqbal, discuss the need for early intervention and prevention strategies rather than focusing solely on identifying signs of suicidal thoughts. They emphasize the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary skills and resources to support students' mental health. There is concern about the burden this places on teachers and the lack of robust training in suicide prevention. The conversation highlights the need for a long-term approach to address the complex issue of suicide. The conversation highlights the importance of addressing the underlying causes of suicide rather than just focusing on treatment. It emphasizes the need to enhance emotional skills and resilience in young people to prevent suicide. The lack of evidence-based suicide prevention treatments is also discussed. The conversation raises questions about the effectiveness of teaching suicide education in schools and suggests that critical thinking skills and multi-sectoral collaboration are also important. The importance of sharing stories of resilience and providing hope is emphasized.Join Shane's Intensive Leadership Programme at educationleaders.co/intensiveShane Leaning, an organisational coach based in Shanghai, supports school leaders globally. Ep 64Beyond Consultants and Quick Fixes
In this special episode, host Shane Leaning shares a recording from a session he co-presented with Efraim Lerner at the Festival of Education in the UK. They discuss their new model for driving organisational change in schools from within rather than relying on outside consultants and experts.Shane and Efraim believe that many schools have become overly dependent on external guidance, leading to a loss of confidence and agency among educators. Their model aims to empower schools to regain control and make decisions at the local level by tapping into the collective wisdom and expertise that already exists within the school community. By engaging diverse stakeholders in a structured process of discovery, alignment, exploration, and delivery, schools can drive sustainable change that genuinely meets their unique needs and challenges. Ep 61Infographics: A Beautiful Distraction?
I take a critical look at the growing popularity of infographics and one-pagers in education. While I acknowledge their aesthetic appeal and potential as conversation starters, as exemplified by the brilliant work of Jamie Clark and the WalkThrus guides, I argue that an overreliance on these simplified visual guides may be holding educators back from deeper understanding and effective implementation. I believe we need to think critically about how we use these tools to ensure they don't become a substitute for nuanced discussions and context-specific adaptations. Key takeawaysThe Nuance Problem: Infographics, by nature, can't capture the full complexity and nuance of educational ideas and practices, potentially leading to oversimplification and misunderstanding.Context Matters: Educators must adapt and contextualize infographics to their unique school settings, considering cultural, social, and institutional factors that can't be represented in a one-size-fits-all visual. The Implementation Gap: Infographics alone can't bridge the gap between theory and practice. Effective professional development requires a range of mechanisms beyond just attractive visuals.Thinking Critically: To avoid "lethal mutations" of educational ideas, educators must approach infographics with a critical eye, using them as departure points for deeper discussion and understanding rather than as comprehensive solutions. Throughout the episode, I provide practical tips for using infographics effectively in professional development, such as fostering critical discussions, adapting to school context, planning for implementation challenges, and integrating reflective practice. Whether you're a fan of infographics or sceptical of their value, this episode will challenge you to rethink the role of simplified visual guides in education and offer strategies for going beyond the surface level to achieve meaningful change in your school. Ep 56Linguistic oppression in international schools | A conversation with José Medina
Dr. José Medina discusses linguistic oppression in education and the need for linguistic liberation. He explains that linguistic oppression occurs when students are not allowed to fully leverage their entire linguistic repertoire, and are instead forced to focus solely on the language of power, which is often English. José emphasises the importance of metalinguistic awareness, which is the ability to make connections between languages in one's repertoire. He also introduces the concept of trans-languaging, which empowers students to use all of their language skills to access content learning. José calls for educators to create linguistically inclusive spaces and to model content language learning targets that incorporate the four plus one language domains.TakeawaysLinguistic oppression occurs when students are not allowed to fully leverage their entire linguistic repertoire.Metalinguistic awareness is the ability to make connections between languages in one's repertoire.Trans-languaging empowers students to use all of their language skills to access content learning.Educators should create linguistically inclusive spaces and model content language learning targets that incorporate the 4+1 language domains.LinksLanguage Magazine Article on ‘Content, Language, & Culture Learning Targets’José on X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok & YouTubeJosé’s website: drjosemedina.comThank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please share your experience. Ep 55How to see through a sales pitch
I explore what to do when you are approached with sales pitches as an international school leader. With a budget at your disposal, the challenge is often distinguishing genuine opportunities from sales noise. In this episode, I offer practical advice on how to critically assess these pitches, ensuring that any decision made is in the best interest of your school. I discuss five critical questions that every school leader should ask when approached by vendors. Ep 47Are there too many consultants in education?
This episode is supported by the University of Warwick's Centre for Teacher Education. Click here to learn more.I explore and question our growing reliance on consultants. With the sector experiencing significant changes, from the integration of AI to shifts in educational models, I reflect on whether this reliance is coming at a cost to our professional integrity. I share observations on the dual role of educational consultants: providing valuable expertise and perspectives to help schools navigate complex decisions while potentially fostering a dependency that could impede the development of internal knowledge and decision-making capabilities. Drawing from personal experiences and industry insights, I note a trend of short-lived implementations and a cycle of change with each new leadership transition, raising concerns about the sustainability of such practices. The conversation shifts towards advocating for a coaching model for whole school development, akin to organisational development coaching in the business sector. This model aims to empower schools to tap into their internal knowledge and insights, promoting a more sustainable and autonomous approach to school development. Key Quotes"International education is evolving at a breakneck pace... But as a result, have we become a little too reliant on consultants?""Every consultant I know has great intentions... but I'm curious as to whether the amount of consultants we have in education is a good thing.""If we manage to solve our challenges internally, we're creating a more sustainable and empowered strategy deployment in the long run.""Our organisations and schools are full of people, full of knowledge, full of insights. Most challenges should be able to be solved internally.""While consultants have their place and will always have their place, the future of our school development lies in empowering the educators and leaders to harness their own collective wisdom." LIVE: Are International Schools Cutting Corners? A Look Into Accountability
bonusThis is a recording of the latest Global Ed Leaders LIVE X Space where we took a deep dive into the multifaceted realm of accountability in international schools, exploring the tug-of-war between educational integrity and corporate influence. Joined by Dan Rosen and a host of experienced voices in the field, we peeled back the layers of what accountability means in an environment where diverse cultural contexts and business models coexist. We tackled the gritty details of how international schools navigate the complex web of governing boards, IB guidelines, and the often elusive quest for balance between profit and pedagogy.Venturing beyond the confines of formal accountability frameworks, we proposed a compelling perspective: Are the guardians of these educational institutions primarily accountable to themselves? We grappled with the enigma of 'whizbang' schooling and its resilience amidst privileged environments. The conversation culminated in a call to action; recognising the instrumental role that leaders hold in cultivating potent teaching forces, and ultimately, in defining and delivering on a school's core purpose. This frank exchange left us with more questions than answers—a hallmark of a truly reflective discussion on school accountability that resonates with the complexity of international schooling.Join Shane's Intensive Leadership Programme at educationleaders.co/intensiveShane Leaning, an organisational coach based in Shanghai, supports school leaders globally. Dr. Hamilton, who has worked closely with John Hattie and Dylan Wiliam, shared insights into the process of de-implementation in schools. Our discussion revealed that not all educational practices are equally effective, and by de-implementing, we can actually enhance student learning. Key Quotes:"The short answer is categorically yes. We do too much in schools." - Arran"So few of these things are really robust drivers...that on their own seem to significantly accelerate student learning." - Arran"It's really hard to unlearn. So if you've got an ingrained behavior...it's really hard to unlearn that behavior or that practice." - Arran"Everything we do generally makes a positive difference...but it's how much difference is that making?" - Shane"You're probably looking for no more than one to three high priority initiatives that you want to pursue in a given year." - Arran Arran’s insights from our conversation, along with his, Hattie and Wiliam’s book "Making Room for Impact", offer valuable guidance for school leaders seeking to streamline their practices for better outcomes.Thank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please share your experience. Ep 41Which Social Media Platform is Best for Educators?
In this episode I explore the transformative role of social media in the educational landscape. I focus on X (formerly Twitter) and LinkedIn, sharing my personal experiences and insights on how these platforms have evolved into essential tools for professional growth and networking in education. The discussion emphasises the unique features and community dynamics of each platform, highlighting how they can facilitate meaningful conversations and connections amongst educators and thought leaders. Key Quotes:"I prefer to use X… I know this is quite a controversial statement to many.""On LinkedIn, because someone's put a lot of effort into [a post], you often get very positive comments. There's generally much less challenge... on LinkedIn than X." -"When the original poster has posted an idea... on X, it's much more equal when someone comments because their comment will also be short.""Elon Musk has big plans for this platform including making it what he calls an everything app.""I love those audio communities [on X]... Ep 40China’s Future in International Education | A Conversation with Julian Fisher
(REPLAY OF EPISODE 1)In this episode, I spoke to Julian Fisher, the co-founder of Venture Education, a market intelligence consultancy focusing on education in China. If you're an international education leader, you won't want to miss this fascinating discussion on the Chinese education system including the challenges of maintaining a strong school culture in a diverse and constantly changing environment. Here are some of the key takeaways:The Chinese school system is not uniform and varies from school to school, with some using more open teaching styles and group work. The best schools in China are arguably government schools where Chinese families prioritize their children attending good schools and universities in China, rather than international ones. The traditional model of international schools is seen by some with a somewhat neo-colonialist nature, and the transactional nature of the engagements.A school with a strong culture that lasts beyond any one leader or any one member of staff is crucial.Bilingual or international schools offer an advantage in terms of individual support for students.Chinese families have historically been brave and willing to explore opportunities, such as studying overseas. To learn more about Julian’s work and Venture Education, visit their website at https://www.ventureeducation.org/.Thank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please share your experience. Ep 39Become a Master of Difficult Conversations
In this episode I explore how to handle difficult as a school leader. This discussion is particularly pertinent for school leaders, teachers, and anyone in a managerial role who grapples with the challenge of providing feedback that is both impactful and compassionate. I start by sharing my experiences as a department lead, reflecting on the anxiety and uncertainty I faced when addressing a colleague's underperformance. This personal story leads into an in-depth look at the COIN framework, a structured approach developed by organsational consultant Anna Carroll, which is designed to help leaders deliver clear, effective, and non-confrontational feedback. The COIN model, which stands for Context, Observation, Impact, and Next Steps, is broken down with practical examples. I demonstrate its utility in various difficult situations, like discussing unmet responsibilities and dealing with sensitive issues such as sexist language in the workplace. Throughout the episode, I emphasise the significance of this framework in turning challenging conversations into chances for growth and mutual understanding, thus nurturing a more positive workplace atmosphere. Key Quotes:"Life is full of difficult conversations. We've all had them, we've all squirmed through them.""Using a framework or system makes these challenging conversations feel a bit more manageable.""The COIN model is an acronym for Context, Observation, Impact, and Next Step.""This framework... helps free up some of your cognitive space, which is crucial in these challenging situations." Ep 38Is Coaching Just Another Fad? | A Conversation with Rachel Lofthouse
Rachel Lofthouse and I explore the challenges and nuances of coaching and mentoring in education, particularly in the context of international schools. We discuss the potential drawbacks of implementing coaching at scale without proper consideration and support, emphasising the need for a nuanced, teacher-centered approach. The discussion also touches upon the CollectivEd award, which provides a framework for schools to evaluate and enhance their professional learning and development practices. This is part two of our conversation so if you haven’t listened to part 1, go there first.Key Quotes:"coaching is really an inside out process. It starts from the inside.""If you can do something well, then really hone that talent, really make that work to the very best of your ability. Don't ignore it or deliberately sideline it because somebody's come along to say, well, this seems to be the thing that will get you a 0.5 additional score regardless of who you are.""And it's not just a gut feeling of what will bring benefit, but an informed sense of what will bring benefit in their setting. So it's not just about coaching, it's also about mentoring and putting both of those in the wider context of professional learning. And I do think it's important to remember professional learning is not the same as training."" I think that word sustainable is the word that we perhaps need to most grapple with in education. We think about innovation and we think about change and development, and we probably don't think about how we create a sustainable workforce, a sustainable system that doesn't constantly undermine itself and compromise the outcomes that we're looking for."Links:CollectivED: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/collectived/New Guide to Teacher Coaching from CollectivED at Leeds Beckett University https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/collectived/guide-to-coaching/Here be dragons - myth busting Instructional Coaching for teachers | Leeds Beckett UniversityThank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please share your experience. Ep 37The Role of Coaching in Teacher Development | A Conversation with Rachel Lofthouse
In this episode of Global Ed Leaders, I engage in a dialogue with Rachel Lofthouse, Professor of Teacher Education at Leeds Beckett University and founder of CollectivEd. We delve into the nuances of coaching in educational settings, exploring its definition, application, and impact. Rachel's extensive experience offers a unique perspective on the evolving role of coaching in education, making this episode a must-listen for international schoo educators and leaders seeking to integrate coaching into their practice.Key Quotes:The Impact of Brief Coaching Sessions: "And it doesn't mean that if you just have one really thoughtful, focused coaching conversation that it will do no good. If in that moment the focus is sustained, the purpose is sustained, the attention that the people give each other is sustained, it can still have quite a considerable impact."The Cycle of Educational Trends: "This tends to happen to all sorts of phenomena in education, particularly nowadays, where social media helps things spread so quickly... And we're absolutely in a surge phase."The Rise of Executive Coaching: "If it looks like coaching for executives in business is a good idea, then we've got a huge growth in the role of executive and education. Well, they all want a coach as well."Interdisciplinary Approaches in Education: "Something up and running in a hurry doesn't really acknowledge that slow and emerging knowledge base. And of course, the other thing that we're not generally good at, is connecting the different knowledge bases."The Evolution of Professional Terms: "Nothing stays unified and uniform. Nobody's got a trademark on the word instructional coaching. It's not copyrighted to anybody. So, of course, over time and in different locations, people have legitimately chosen to use similar language to describe things that."Time and Resource Constraints in Coaching: "we haven't got an infinite amount of time and an infinite resource."Links:CollectivED: https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/collectived/New Guide to Teacher Coaching from CollectivED at Leeds Beckett University https://www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk/research/collectived/guide-to-coaching/Here be dragons - myth busting Instructional Coaching for teachers | Leeds Beckett UniversityThank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please share your experience. Ep 32Three Essential EAL Strategies for Success in International Schools
Today, I explore the vital role of English as an Additional Language (EAL) in international schools. I'll share three strategies that are key to supporting our multilingual students and promoting linguistic inclusion. Drawing from my experience in EAL, I offer practical tips from embracing an additive mindset to implementing scaffolding techniques and integrating language structures throughout the curriculum.Key InsightsCelebrating Linguistic Diversity: I discuss how multilingual students bring a wealth of diversity to our schools and why it's essential to shift from a deficit to an asset-based mindset. The Power of Scaffolding: I emphasise scaffolding learning to match students' cognitive levels, rather than simplifying content, allowing them to engage with complex ideas.Embedding Language Structures: I advocate for consistent language support in all subjects, highlighting how this can improve overall communication skills for every student.Strategies DiscussedShifting Mindsets: I reflect on the importance of viewing multilingualism as an enrichment rather than a challenge to overcome.Building Up, Not Watering Down: I talk about the necessity of providing students with the tools they need to grasp higher-level concepts, ensuring that all students can succeed.Language Across the Curriculum: I explore the benefits of reinforcing language structures in every lesson, aiding EAL students and their classmates alike.Thank you for tuning in, and as always, if you found this episode useful, please leave a review on your podcast platform.
