Summary

Kamala Harris is visiting the U.S.-Mexico border for the first time since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee. During her visit, she will call for tougher border security measures, including additional resources for Border Patrol agents and fentanyl detection machines at ports of entry. She will also argue that the U.S. should have a safe, orderly, and humane immigration system. Her visit comes at a time when the Biden administration is set to solidify new asylum restrictions and as a recent poll shows that border security is a major concern for voters. Her opponent, former President Donald Trump, has criticized Harris' visit and her stance on immigration, calling for a border closure and highlighting a failed bipartisan border bill that Harris supports.
