#023: How to Restart Your Mental Computer [Podcast]

Have you ever clicked your mouse so many times and moved it around with so many programs that the mouse curser on the screen just freaks out and starts bouncing all over the screen? Sometimes, when I’m impatient with a webpage loading I keep clicking it and then when the computer catches up to speed, the curser goes crazy and starts clicking things that I don’t want to click. This is how our lives become. We are pushing and clicking so much, that we are frying our minds. Before we know, we are doing things and saying things that we never wanted to do or to say. In those situations, it’s best to just close down all you programs and restart the computer. Today’s podcast walks us through how we can do just that. #020: When Prayer Becomes a Chore [Podcast]

I talk a lot about Mental Prayer, but personally I get bogged down and often it feels like a chore. A reader named Alex wrote me about when “prayer feels like a chore.” I can relate. Trust me. In today’s podcast, I talk about my own struggles and give three suggestions to overcome the idea that prayer is a chore – something to merely check off the list. Also, due to the overwhelming response – the old intro music is back! I also talk about Saint Alexander and the death of the heretic Arius who died on the toilet (as depicted in the image below). You won’t want to miss that story. It’s in this podcast’s “Saint of the Week” feature. #019: 12 Attributes of a Baptized Christian [Podcast]

Last week we looked a “bitter Catholics” so this week are reminding ourselves of the great spiritual identity and dignity that we have in Christ. We go through 12 profound attributes of the Christian given by God to us in Christ. Saint Paul is our guide as he leads us through his Epistle of Romans with reminders that we are “more than conquerors.” I also tried out a new podcast theme song. Leave me a comment below about whether you like the change. Your 12 Attributes as a Baptized Christian Print these out and put them in your Bible. Use them when you feel discouraged or defeated. The theology of Saint Paul is “become what you already are in Christ.” 1. In Christ I reign in life (Rom. 5:17). 2. In Christ I walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4). 3. In Christ I am alive unto God (Rom. 6:11). 4. In Christ I bring forth fruits unto God (Rom. 7:4). 5. In Christ I have no condemnation (Rom. 8:1). 6. In Christ I have been made free from the law of sin and death (Rom. 8:2). 7. In Christ I live by the law of the Spirit of life (Rom. 8:2). 8. In Christ I am a child of God (Rom. 8:16). 9. In Christ I am an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ (Rom. 8:16-17). 10. In Christ I receive all things from God (Rom. 8:32). 11. In Christ I am more than a conqueror (Rom. 8:37). 12. In Christ nothing can separate me from the love of God (Rom. 8:38-39). Taylor’s Goals for 2014

Here are my goals for 2014. I place them in a hierarchy. You may be shocked that I place myself (mind and body) before my wife and my children. This is counter-intuitive, but I have learned (the hard way) that if I am sick/tired/depressed/frustrated/discouraged I cannot serve my wife and children. Most books about goal-making will encourage you to do the same. I think it comes down to Mark 12:30-31: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God, with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind, and with thy whole strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. Notice that God is first. Then notice that you must love your neighbor as yourself. This implies that care is taken for self so that you can care for others. If I eat poorly, sleep only 2 hours, gain 15 pounds of fat for the sake of helping people, I’m going to be a wreck – they probably won’t want my help! So it’s important to care for yourself so that your care even more for your family, friends, and vocation in life. Think of it like this, if a fireman doesn’t workout and train, he can’t save lives. Taylor’s Goals for 2014 God Mental Prayer daily – 20 minutes and work back to 30 minutes 3 chapters of Bible Reading 365 days per year Daily Rosary (5 decades with family) 33 Day Consecration for Aug 15 Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe in February Mind Fortitude is the virtue that I will work on in 2014. Do one thing I don’t want to do, every day. (If you’re a Member of NSTI, please be sure to watch the two video classes on the 7 Virtues) Cultivate the habit of positivity by saying something positive to everyone I converse with Keep a tighter calendar, and schedule one hour daily for creative tasks Body Jog 5 days per week or 12 miles per week and log it in ”MyFitnessPal” Keep caloric intake below 2,000 daily by charting on “MyFitnessPal” One daily bodily penance Joy Say I love you 3 times per day Write her a weekly love note every Sunday Date once per week (preferably on Thursday or Friday) Seven Children Do something special with each child every week (eg, read a book) Have lunch with them at school every Wednesday Travel less and limit my speaking to protect time with family Work and Charity Record and Produce 52 Podcasts – one per week, every Wednesday Publish 3 blog posts per week (M,W,F) – 156 blog posts Publish 2 books in paperback and Kindle – Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages and God’s Birthday Grow readership of taylormarshall.com from 130,000 unique monthly visitors to 260,000 by Dec 31 Expand NSTI from 20 nations to 40 nations Launch certificate program for NSTI Get to know the Captains of the Troops of Saint George Continue to produce 90% of my content/writing for FREE. There it is. Some of you may be thinking: “Dang! Why pile it on? Why not just accept what God wills?” My answer: I straight up believe that’s not the biblical way to live. It’s not what I discover in the Proverbs. I think we must pray every day and then pursue the goals that God reveals to us. That’s what my list is. We must prepare and plan. That’s how we turn 5 talents into 10 talents: And he that had received the five talents coming, brought other five talents, saying: Lord, thou didst deliver to me five talents, behold I have gained other five over and above. His lord said to him: Well done, good and faithful servant, because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. (Mt 25:20-21) God is giving you talents for 2014. Don’t bury them! Make a plan! Now! I get a lot of things done and I do it with goals. It’s what Thomas Aquinas calls “teleology.” I call it “teleological living” (hey, that’s a book idea!). Having Closure with Failed Goals From past experience, I usually attain only 75% of my goals. I’d like to move that number up to 85% in 2014. That means that there are things on the list above that may not happen. I accept that. Still, I plan accordingly. I think keeping a better calendar will help bump that percentage up. Part of making future goals is getting closure with past successful goals and past failed goals. It’s like doing your taxes. You look at how the year went. What you made. What you lost. You can never move forward if you don’t accept the past and then kiss it goodbye. If goals don’t get you excited, you’re doing it wrong. More Resources for Goal Making I’ve recently produced 2 podcasts on Making Goals. If you want my philosophy on goals, please check them out. You’ll find them in Episode 16 (which is also about Our Lady of Guadalupe) and in Episode 18 (also about how failed goals can make us bitter and how to find closure with them). Our Lady of the Seven Veils (St Alphonsus and St Pio)

In the Cathedral of Foggia one can find an ancient and mysterious image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This icon, called “Our Lady of the Seven Veils,” once caused Saint Alphonsus to go into ecstasy, which I will describe below. As a young priest, St Pio of Pietreclina would make a visit to this image every day. I’ve read about the image, but knew nothing about it. I did some research and here is what I found. Madonna of the Seven Veils, Foggia In the eleventh century Foggia, Italy was a tiny town perched around the Tavern of the Owl. One day some local farmers saw three flames over a small pond or bog. Intrigued, they dug where the miraculous fire had been and discovered a large “table” buried in the mud. They realized that this “table” was actually a Byzantine icon that had remained somewhat preserved despite being soaked in water and mud. The image was cleaned and then cloaked with new veils. I assume there were seven veils and hence the name, but I cannot verify this. The icon was then placed in the local Tavern of the Owl for veneration. Soon the tavern became a place of pilgrimage. In 1080 Robert Guiscard built a church to honor the sacred image. In 1172 the church was expanded by William II “the Good” of Sicily. The “face hole” is all that one can now see of the original wooden icon. It is black and the face is now indiscernible. However, on Maundy Thursday of 1731, the Virgin Mary’s white face appeared in this portal, which was usually black and dark. Saint Alphonsus Liguori heard about apparition and went to Foggia to venerate the Immaculate Mother of the Savior. He also received an apparition of the Virgin’s face in the small black portal. He described the Blessed Virgin’s face on that occasion as a girl of 13-14 with a white veil. The apparitions of the Virgin’s face on the icon continued until about 1745. As the city grew larger, the church was decorated and enriched. The Normans, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, Spaniards, and Bourbons considered the church to be one of the most important in Italy. It has served as the site for several royal weddings. Today, the image is said to be covered in seven layers of precious metal and embroidered material – hence the name Madonna of the Seven Veils. Don’t let them just happen and get you off track. Realize the need for diversion and plan for it. We all need a break here and there. A little fun to relax the mind. 3) Featured Segment: “My Top 5 Daily Prayers” Source from Mark’s question on “Bread of Angels” Thomas Aquinas, Summa theologiae, III, q. 80, a. 2, ad 1 Reply to Objection 1. The receiving of Christ under this sacrament is ordained to the enjoyment of heaven, as to its end, in the same way as the angels enjoy it; and since the means are gauged by the end, hence it is that such eating of Christ whereby we receive Him under this sacrament, is, as it were, derived from that eating whereby the angels enjoy Christ in heaven. Consequently, man is said to eat the “bread of angels,” because it belongs to the angels to do so firstly and principally, since they enjoy Him in his proper species; and secondly it belongs to men, who receive Christ under this sacrament.” 4) Latin Word of the Week: I forgot the Latin word of the week, again.
