So in this episode (Episode 66) we’ll look at the idea of the Antichrist and 666 in more detail. Some of us have been deeply wounded by friends, spouses, brothers and sisters, parents, even priests. Sometimes people wound you by accident. They never intended anything, but still you are walking around maimed. Today I’m going to share a true story that I hope inspires you to find hope in the hurt. Click to Listen: #061: When Other People Really Hurt You (This podcast is out of order because I goofed and made two Episode 57’s! So this episode which was announced as 57, has been moved and renumbered as Episode 60. #059: Revolution in Catholic Education - Jennifer Fulwiler Interviews Taylor Marshall

Happy New Year’s Eve! I have a sore throat and my voice is shot, so instead of recording I’m sharing a really fun interview that I did with former-atheist, now-Catholic author, blogger, radio host Jennifer Fulwiler at conversiondiary.com. She recently invited me to be on her Sirius XM radio show to talk about the “coming revolution in education.” I predict that college institutions will begin to lose their grip on the market and explain why. So please listen and enjoy this different kind of podcast. Please click here to listen to the podcast: You can leave a comment by clicking here. 4 Quick Bullet Points: What is the Taylor Marshall Show Podcast? This my weekly podcast hosted on iTunes, where I become a little more casual and share things from my own life – failings and personal insights. How do I present this material? I wrap together classical theology from the Jewish proverbs, the sayings of Christ, the lives of the Saints, and the philosophy of Thomas Aquinas. Is this podcast popular? It’s had 289,863 Podcast Downloads so far! #060: Is Saint George Still a Saint? [Podcast]

My goal this week is to answer a question that I get pretty regularly: “Is Saint George still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Christopher still a saint?” Or “Is Saint Philomena still a saint?” As you know, these saints were removed from the liturgical calendar and so you quite often hear people claim that Saint George or Saint Christopher are no longer saints. We’re going to look at this question from a historical, liturgical and theological point of view. Oh, and don’t worry, I’ll definitely explain why George is depicted with a dragon and why would should take that seriously. So if you’ve wondered “What’s up that dragon?” this is the podcast for you. #055: Why Do We Baptize Babies? The Covenantal Argument

My goal this week is to talk to you about infant baptism. If faith is something someone must know and understand and it must be a personal decision from the heart, why do we baptize children? They do not make a decision? Moreover, one might say that Catholicism has so many nominal members precisely because of infant baptism. Would it better to just wait till people mature and make the decision themselves? We will look at these common objections and then the biblical and historical reasons for baptizing infants. #054: Is God Male or Female - The Catholic Teaching

My goal this week is to talk to you about a controversial issue in Western culture. You may have wondered about it. You may have been asked to defend it and you did not know how to do it. It’s the question “Is God male or female?” This question touches on Trinitarian theology, Eucharistic theology, whether or not women can be ordained to Holy Orders, and even the theology of Holy Matrimony. So today I’ll share four conclusion I’ve made for myself about become a better “essentialist. Here’s the link to the book: Essentialism by Greg McKeown. #050: The Seven Sorrows of Mary are the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit [Podcast]

The Seven Sorrows of Mary are one of the most fruitful topics of mental prayer. On Fridays especially, the Seven Sorrows are a way to better contemplate the Divine Mercy of God. Here’s a video of me explaining how the Seven Sorrows relate to the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here. If you don’t see the video in you, you can watch it here. And here’s the podcast version: It is a tradition for Catholics to say daily one Our Father and seven Hail Mary for each. The Prophecy of Simeon. (Luke 2:34-35) The Flight into Egypt. (Matthew 2:13) The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple. (Luke 2:43-45) Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary. (Luke 23:26) Jesus Dies on the Cross. (John 19:25) Mary Receives the Body of Jesus in Her Arms. (Matthew 27:57-59) The Body of Jesus is Placed in the Tomb. (John 19:40-42) The Seven Sorrows of Mary also correspond to the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit: The Prophecy of Simeon – Fear of the Lord (Mary is explicitly reminded of her sorrowful vocation: “a sword shall pierced thy soul”) The Flight into Egypt – Piety (Mary fulfills her duties toward Joseph and Jesus in a foreign land) The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple – Knowledge (Mary’s knowledge of Christ’s identity as the Son of God) Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary – Fortitude (Mary’s strength in seeing Christ in His Passion) Jesus Dies on the Cross – Counsel (Mary is the spiritual guide and counselor for all who seek her crucified Son) Mary Receives the Body of Jesus in Her Arms – Understanding (As Mary holds the dead body of her Son, she perceives His coming resurrection) The Body of Jesus is Placed in the Tomb – Wisdom (Christ is hidden but Mary’s soul continues to see Christ and communicate with Him) Since Mary is the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, this should come as no surprise to us. #049: 6 Obstacles in Your Life (How to Conquer Them) [Podcast]

My goal this week is to talk about obstacles in your life. I recently read a great article on LifeHacker.com titled “Six Obstacles That Hinder Your Creative Projects” by Courtney Seiter. In our Episode 12, “Why You Should be More Creative”, we discussed the theology of being creative. Today we wrestle with the reasons we do not accomplish our big dreams in life. This is a follow up to that episode, so if you haven’t listened to Episode 12 “Why You Should be More Creative”, you should listen to it after you listen to this one. Taylor’s Voicemail about St Augustine in 50 Pages

On my birthday, March 29, 2014, the email subscribers of my blog took a vote on our next free book. I offered several free books I’d be willing to write for you as a “thank you” for your encouragement. The winning title was Augustine in 50 Pages: A Quick Layman’s Guide to Augustinianism. You can see the various book options and how the voting broke down by clicking here. My goal was to finish researching and writing the book by the feast day of Saint Augustine on August 28, 2014. I worked hard on it and put the finishing touches on it on August 29. Do you know how hard it is to squeeze Augustine into 50 pages? Please Listen Here: Your Voicemail about the Book Here’s a short 1 minute voicemail I recorded to you telling you about the book: Click here to listen to it: Taylor’s Voicemail to you about your free book. Here’s a photo of the final manuscript. Augustine in 50 Pages Table of Contents Here’s a sneak at the title page for the book: SAINT AUGUSTINE IN 50 PAGES title page.pdf When will you get this Free Book? The book is finished. But as you know, I am the royal king of typos (it’s a common theme in the comments box. My dad is dyslexic. Maybe I have a little bit of it.) So I need to get this Augustine manuscript professionally edited and cleaned up. Whenever that is finished, you’ll have this free book in your hands. Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages will go into paperback version and will be available for purchase at amazon soon. If you still want a free copy of Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages, sign up and get it here. Godspeed, Taylor Marshall PS: I shared this on Facebook, but I really felt that Saint Augustine was in the room with me when I wrote this book. It was a very supernatural sensation. The closest experience I’ve had as an author was writing The Catholic Perspective on Paul and my new fictional novel about Saint George, Saint Christopher, and Saint Nicholas (due after Thanksgiving). Question: Should the new title be SAINT Augustine in 50 Pages or just Augustine in 50 Pages? The reason I ask is that Thomas Aquinas in 50 Pages doesn’t have the “Saint” in front of it. #047: Don’t Swallow the Camel [Podcast]

My goal this week is to talk about ‘cleaning the inside of the cup.’ I’m going to talk about my own struggles with hypocrisy and how I’m trying to overcome it. In Matthew chapter 23, our Lord Jesus Christ warns the Pharisees about cleaning the outside of the cup, but not the inside. He also warns us about not swallowing the camel. We’ll look at these passages and try to see what Christ is teaching us. #045: Did Saint Paul Teach Once Saved Always Saved? [Podcast]

My goal this week is to take a look at the Evangelical Protestant teaching “once saved always saved.” Once upon a time when I was an Evangelical, I believed in this teaching. It basically holds that once you have accepted Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you can do nothing to lose it. Catholic Christians don’t believe this. So today we will look at the key Bible verses related to this teaching. It’s going to be fun! #042: Golf Cart Saints [Podcast]

My goal this week is to talk about the process of sanctification. My good friend Dr. Ben Olson invited me to play golf with him this week and it reminded me how the spiritual life is like golf. Full of frustrations, sand traps, water hazards, and missed putts. We’ll go through what a typical game of golf looks like for me and then relate that to the Catholic doctrine of sanctification. Video: Eve - Is Woman a Misbegotten Male? (Thomas Aquinas vs. Aristotle)

This is going to be controversial! Today we look at the classical and medieval understandings of woman as she relates to man. We do so by looking at the Genesis account and along the way we get into some dicey theology. If you’re a rock-ribbed feminist, you may want to stop reading here. Just sayin’. Thomas Aquinas locks horns with Aristotle on this issue of “woman as misbegotten male.” I think you’ll find this video especially interesting and helpful as you engage with others who argue that “The story of Adam and Eve is misogynistic!” You’ll also learn about Thomas Aquinas’ philosophy. As always, I look forward to the comments!!! By the way this video is the last of a series of NSTI videos that we’ve been releasing for the past two weeks from the New Saint Thomas Institute. Alert: TODAY (July 8) is the LAST DAY to sign up for the New Saint Thomas Institute. On Tuesday July 8 at 11:59pm the tuition will go from $37 to $47! This sale is only available for a few more hours. We will also close registration. If you join before 11:59pm July 8 you will get all the amazing bonuses worth (over $119), a tuition rate cut, and the Certificate in Theology. And you get a 21 day full money back guarantee! This sale will never be available again. If you’ve thought about joining the New Saint Thomas Institute, this is the day. Do it before 11:59pm July 8. Click here to sign up and get the tuition sale before 11:50pm Tuesday July 8. Here’s the video on: “Eve – Is Woman a Misbegotten Male? (Thomas Aquinas)” If you can’t see this video in your RSS reader or email, then click here. You can get videos like this every week through the New Saint Thomas Institute Here’s the mp3/audio version if you want to listen to it or download it: What does “Eve” mean? Eve comes from the Hebrew: חַוָּה‎, pronounced Havah or Hawah. Eve in the Hebrew language is Ḥawwāh, meaning: “living one” or “source of life”, and is related to ḥāyâ, “to live”. The name derives from the Semitic root ḥyw. Why the Rib? (STh I, q. 92, a. 3.) Thomas Aquinas gives this account: I answer that, It was right for the woman to be made from a rib of man. First, to signify the social union of man and woman, for the woman should neither “use authority over man,” and so she was not made from his head; nor was it right for her to be subject to man’s contempt as his slave, and so she was not made from his feet. Secondly, for the sacramental signification; for from the side of Christ sleeping on the Cross the Sacraments flowed–namely, blood and water–on which the Church was established. Aristotle on “Female as Misbegotten Male” Aristotle was a Greek philosopher before the time of Christ. He had been a student of Plato. Aristotle was brilliant and the rediscovery of Aristotle in the Middle Ages led to a renaissance in Christian, Jewish, and Muslim intellectual circles – especially in the fields of science. While the Church Fathers taught “immediate” conception, Aristotle taught a “delayed” conception. Consequently, Aristotle taught that “the female is a misbegotten male.” Aristotle, De Gener. ii, 3. Thomas Aquinas depends on Aristotle quite a bit, but not slavishly. Thomas frequently points out where and why Aristotle is wrong on hundreds of points. So it is interesting to see Thomas wrestle with Aristotle on the “status” of women in the scope of creation. Here’s the answer from Thomas Aquinas (it’s in more detail in the video lesson): “Reply to Objection 1. As regards the individual nature, woman is defective and misbegotten, for the active force in the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex; while the production of woman comes from defect in the active force or from some material indisposition, or even from some external influence; such as that of a south wind, which is moist, as the Philosopher observes (De Gener. Animal. iv, 2). On the other hand, as regards human nature in general, woman is not misbegotten, but is included in nature’s intention as directed to the work of generation. Now the general intention of nature depends on God, Who is the universal Author of nature. Therefore, in producing nature, God formed not only the male but also the female.” STh I, q. 92, 1, ad 2. Here’s how Thomas understands it: From the Aristotelian point of view of philosophical act and potency, an embryonic female is just a little less actualized (XX chromosome) than a male (XY). But Thomas says, “on the other hand,” from the biblical Judeo-Christian point of view woman is NOT a misbegotten male. She is integral to the fabric of creation. Question: So let’s get the comments rolling! What do you think? Does Thomas handle this appropriately? Does he not go far enough? You can leave a comment by clicking here. #040: Taylor and Joy Talk About Their Marriage [Podcast]

Joy and I sit down today to talk about something very personal: our marriage. We talk about how we met and how we married. Thirteen years and seven children later, we talk about the good and the not so good. Our goal is to share with you a realistic picture of Christian marriage and to share just two things that will help you have a peaceful and loving marriage. Marriage is under attack. We all need to work together and give advice and support so that we can have healthy and happy marriages. Marriage is the primary icon of Christ and the Church. So if marriage suffers, we are not rightly depicting the mystery of Christ and human salvation. That’s why we recorded this podcast. This is probably the most important podcast that we’ve ever recorded! If you don’t usually listen to my podcasts, please don’t let this one pass you by. Video Lesson: 9 Big Theology Words you should know by now

In honor of the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity yesterday, here is a free video lesson from the New Saint Thomas Institute on the 9 “big words” that Catholics use to describe and explain the Trinity. As a confirmed Catholic, you must know and understand the canonized terminology for God – otherwise you might start speaking like a heretic and not even know it! #038: Should You Budget Time (or Money)? [Podcast]

My goal this week is to challenge you to reassess how you budget your time. Most people think constantly about their money. How much is in the checking account? How do I get a raise? How to make this money go further? How can I keep a better budget? I applaud that and I think the Bible has very sound advice about being a good steward about money. But the worldview of the Bible holds that time, not money, is your most valuable currency. Today I’m going to show why you should budget your time and give you 3 practical tips on how to do it more efficiently. Click to Listen: Podcast #038: Should You Budget Time (or Money)? #032: 4 Sections of Hell [Podcast]

My goal this week is to introduce talk about the afterlife. We are in the middle of the octave of Holy Week. We are celebrating the resurrection of Christ from the dead. But it raises the question: what is meant by the dead? We also say that he “descended into Hell” and yet Christ told the good thief that he would be with Him in Paradise. All of this confuses people. So today we are going to break it all down. By the time you finish this podcast you’ll understand limbo, Christ’s descent into Hell, the Harrowing of Hell, and how the thief could be in Hell and Paradise with Christ at the same time. Are you ready? #031: Meet the Saint Version of You [Podcast]

What if you were a living saint? What if 300 years from now, people carried around holy cards with your picture on them. What if there were a statue of you at the Vatican. What would that “saint you” look like? Today we look at three helpful attitude adjustments to get you going on that journey. Weekly podcast joke: And old grandma was sipping on a glass of wine. #030: Should You Be an Optimist? [Podcast]

My goal this week is to help you answer the question: “Should you be an optimist?” This might surprise you because most people assume that you are either born an optimist or pessimist – like being born right or left handed. My claim is that it is a choice that you can make and that you should choose “optimist” as your identity because you believe in God and you believe in Jesus Christ. Weekly podcast joke: Thomas Aquinas goes camping Tip of the week: form an intentional prayer circle – 5 people that you go to for prayer Proverb of the week: Proverbs 24:14 Featured Segment: Should You Be an Optimist? Saint of the Week: None Latin word of the week: optimus (plus cameo appearance by Optimus Prime!) Click to Listen: Podcast #030: Should You Be an Optimist?
