Ep 208Healing the Gut & Autoimmune Symptoms with the Elemental Diet

bonus

Juan was facing an autoimmune arthritis condition, gut issues, and infertility. After trying a prescription drug that made him feel worse, he turned to healing his gut and mixed fasting with the elemental diet. In taking these steps, Juan was able to eliminate his symptoms—like joint pain, fatigue, and inflammation—and his wife became pregnant. The elemental diet is a liquid diet in which the contents are broken down into essential elements that can be quickly absorbed by the gut. Elemental Heal is the elemental diet formula that Juan used. If you've already tried diet, lifestyle, probiotics, and other interventions and still have lingering symptoms, personalizing the elemental diet (explained below) may be a good option to explore. https://drruscio.com/?p=32206 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 207The Autoimmune Paleo Diet for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis

The autoimmune paleo (or AIP) diet and community support together can benefit patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, according to a landmark study. AIP removes nightshades, eggs, nuts, seeds, ghee, and caffeine, in addition to standard paleo restrictions. The study's community support (which included online health coaching) contributed to 90-100% adherence to this diet. Interestingly, multiple participants improved symptomatically and/or were able to reduce thyroid medication, while their antibody levels didn't change. This suggests that caution is warranted when drawing conclusions about one's health status from thyroid antibody levels. In this podcast, Dr. Robert Abbott—third-time guest on the show and researcher on the study—discusses other health lessons, and insights on beneficial clinical models. https://drruscio.com/?p=32044 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Ep 207Are low carb or keto diets bad for your gut health?

bonus

Some articles circulate online claiming that low-carb or ketogenic diets starve your gut bacteria and are thus unhealthy. But these diets are not bad for your gut health. The claims are misleading: while they may starve some bacterial populations, they may promote the growth of others. These diets may not work for everyone. If you feel fatigued or irritable on a low-carb or keto diet, a moderate to higher-carb diet might be more ideal for your body. A diet low in fermentable carbs (called the low FODMAP diet) is worth considering if you suffer gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, or other digestive challenges. https://drruscio.com/?p=32042 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 206Best & Worst Gut Function Tests, with Dr. Ilana Gurevich

A GI functional marker test, or test of gut function, can be very useful to detect some gut conditions. It can help diagnose inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), predict pancreatic insufficiency (or need for digestive enzymes), and potentially detect leaky gut. However, patients should beware of paying attention to markers like secretory IgA, fecal lysozyme, chymotrypsin and beta-glucuronidase that are problematic or unvalidated. Also—because lab testing processes vary and markers can be difficult to filter even for clinicians—it's important that patients work with an experienced clinician in order to properly interpret their results. https://drruscio.com/?p=31764 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 206Have Brain Fog & Depression? Leaky Gut Could Be to Blame.

bonus

Leaky gut syndrome—also known as increased intestinal permeability—is a state in which the intestinal lining becomes damaged. This allows toxins, bacteria, and foreign particles to leak into the bloodstream. Robust research shows links between leaky gut (and other gut issues) and brain-based issues like cognition and mood. For example, intestinal infection was associated with later onset of anxiety. In other research, elevated zonulin (a marker of leaky gut) was correlated with higher psychological distress and social impairment. Evidence also shows that probiotics and gut-supporting nutrients can help heal these issues. Ep 205Meditation: Why It's Healthy & How to Get Started

Neuroscience research has revealed and continues to show the wide-ranging health benefits of meditation. These benefits range from lower inflammation in the body to emotional resilience to increased compassion. A small investment of time daily, just 10-20 minutes, can yield many returns on effectiveness in multiple areas of one's life. But it can sometimes be challenging for beginners to figure out what to do or what the process even looks like. Researcher and meditation teacher Ashok Gupta shares his recommendations for getting started, by becoming an observer of your thoughts and feelings. https://drruscio.com/?p=31643 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 205Cannabis Can Enhance Sexual Function and Connectivity

bonus

Medicinal cannabis has been studied and administered for health benefits like chronic pain reduction and chemotherapy-induced nausea. Compelling—while currently more limited—evidence shows that a small, controlled dose of cannabis can also improve sexual function in the four main domains: libido, arousal, orgasm, and bonding. The optimal medium to use is cannabis flower (to avoid harmful byproducts and have predictable effects) with a vaporizer that has proper temperature regulation and dose control. It's also important to wait about 10-15 minutes between each inhalation because effects are delayed. Just one or two puffs has impact for most at the recommended dose, and more can be counterproductive. Ep 204How To Identify and Treat CIRS and Mold Illness

Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is an inflammatory response in the body that may affect multiple systems—like digestive, respiratory, nervous, musculoskeletal, pulmonary—and is generally brought on by environmental exposure or infection. The most common trigger for CIRS is mold and mycotoxins from buildings with water damage. If you see health changes after a water leak, moving to a new residence (or office), or even after a brief exposure like a hotel stay, consider mold and CIRS a possibility. Tick-borne illnesses can also impact CIRS. The ERMI test may be useful to detect mold in your home. Some CIRS sufferers may be able to resolve their symptoms after a supplement protocol and ending exposure to the triggering toxins. Others may need to try further measures such as limbic system retraining. https://drruscio.com/?p=31402 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 204Long-Term Study Links Pesticide Exposure to Hypothyroidism

bonus

A large, 20-year study of farmers shows associations between exposure to certain pesticides and herbicides and an increased risk of hypothyroidism. Many of these chemicals are still in use. Note that the study measured occupational use, or very high exposure. Another study which measured pesticide levels in the blood—after participants ate organic versus conventional food—showed higher levels of pesticides in the blood of those who ate conventional food. Eating organic food whenever possible may help to moderate risk to your thyroid from pesticides and herbicides. https://drruscio.com/?p=31400 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 202How Psychedelics Might Change the Course of Healing

Sometimes, looking at difficult health issues holistically and asking good questions can uncover surprising paths to wellness. Jason Prall of the Human Longevity Project docu-series focused his career on lifestyle medicine after working to help many patients with complex issues. In additional to health practices like exercise and sun exposure, he has also seen powerful healing effects from psychedelics on the nervous system, both personally and in others. One high-impact activity you can incorporate right away is a daily 30-45 minute morning walk outside, which will set your circadian rhythm, lower your blood sugar, help regulate your thyroid hormones, and more. https://drruscio.com/?p=31078 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 202Brain Fog, Fatigue, Female Hormone Issues & Bloating GONE

bonus

The cost of care, especially in the realm of functional medicine, can be an unknown for a suffering layperson. It may feel to weary patients like their only option is to sign away many thousands of dollars. Julie's story shows that this does not need to be the case. After her general practitioner was not able to treat her myriad symptoms—including brain fog, fatigue, female hormone issues, bloating, and loose stools—Julie turned to functional medicine. The first functional medicine doctor she turned to quoted her an unreasonably expensive and lengthy package. Fortunately, she looked for a second opinion and found that our clinic, and Dr. Ruscio, a functional medicine expert in gut health, were able to get to the root of her issues quickly and cost-effectively. Ep 201Why Boredom is a Healthy Pursuit

Our society provides more stimulus and entertainment than ever before, from streaming video to mobile devices. Parents are often discouraged from letting their children wander off or attempt things unsupervised. And most people think of boredom as a negative feeling to be avoided. But could there be a value to boredom? Dr. Mark Hawkins, a high school counselor, thinks so. Cultivating a practice of boredom, or leaving space to do nothing, can lead to facing and resolving one's negative feelings, reflecting upon knowledge, creative problem-solving, and more. In today's society, one needs to more deliberately pursue boredom in the face of so much stimulus. https://drruscio.com/?p=30983 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? bonus

If you are still experiencing symptoms of hypothyroidism despite taking a thyroid hormone, a recent study shows promise. The study showed that two-thirds of women with the above condition, who brought their ferritin levels (or functional iron in their blood) above 100, saw their persistent symptoms relieved. Consider testing your ferritin and supplementing it before adding on another medication. Interestingly, 100 is not a cutoff for healthy iron levels in most blood tests, so make sure to take a closer look. https://drruscio.com/?p=30981 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 200How to Become Happier and More Appreciative

Stoic philosophy is an ancient life philosophy, originating in Rome and Greece, that may help you face challenges more effectively and with greater tranquility. One technique involves briefly visualizing the loss of someone or something precious, restoring gratitude for and awareness of that element of life. Another method is to review and analyze the surfacing of negative emotion to hopefully prevent it in the future. The practice of Stoic philosophy provides a balance to modern goals of material gain and status, and may contribute to increased well-being and resilience. https://drruscio.com/?p=30837 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 200You Live Longer If You Have Healthy Relationships

bonus

The influence of social relationships on health and happiness is a popular topic of research. A healthy marital relationship can yield numerous benefits, including better sleep and greater longevity. But marital stress can be detrimental to couples' immune systems. Stress in a relationship (or even loss) can be buffered by other friendships, by gratitude, by time apart, and by setting realistic expectations. Commitment from your social connections can also bolster health. Ep 199Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) & Tick-Borne Illness

bonus

Three main types of symptoms typically occur in mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS): allergic, inflammatory, and growth abnormality symptoms, which can affect different organs in the body. Lyme disease, Bartonella, and other tick-borne (and insect/animal-transmitted) illnesses can influence, trigger, or mimic the symptoms of MCAS. It's important to consider that these conditions may or may not overlap. Lab testing can help identify inflammation markers or specific infections. Treatments, from herbal to antibiotic, vary based on individual need. A person with MCAS may need to introduce one variable at a time in treatment, as they can be highly reactive. Paying attention to diet can also be a foundational step to moderate one's condition. https://drruscio.com/?p=30672 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 198Specific Tests and Tips for Detecting a Brain to Gut Problem

Neural pathways that form the brain to gut connections can be damaged as a result of a concussion or other traumatic injury. For some patients whose symptoms don't fully resolve with gut therapies, new treatments that stimulate neural pathways may be helpful. Functional neurology is an area of clinical practice that opens a window onto brain-based problems and provides some novel therapies. Today we talk about diagnostic clues for detecting a brain-to-gut problem and we explore electroceuticals, a new category of therapies that stimulate specific neural pathways with electricity. https://drruscio.com/?p=30240 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 1983 Game-Changing Probiotics

bonus

Often people try a few store-bought, random probiotics to help their gut, thinking they are all the same. Then they conclude that either they don't work, or that they don't tolerate them. Unfortunately, this can miss some of the most widely-studied effective classes of probiotics: a lactobacillus-bifidobacterium blend, S. boulardii, and soil-based probiotics. Phyllis, a patient, tried the random approach first and didn't tolerate them. Then she tried the Healthy Gut, Healthy You probiotic protocol which brought in each of these three classes, one at a time. With this optimal group of three, she is seeing better digestion, including better bowel movements and more regularity. If you haven't had success with probiotics, consider this protocol. https://drruscio.com/?p=30235 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 197When Your Brain is Stuck in Fight or Flight Mode

bonus

Sometimes a trauma, whether physical or emotional, can push your limbic system into a "stuck" state of fight or flight. This can lead to a host of issues, from chemical hypersensitivities or fibromyalgia to IBS or survival-related emotional states. To restore your limbic system balance, one approach comes in the form of a neural retraining program. This system targets negative triggers through conscious awareness, guided visualization, exposure therapy, the pursuit of positive emotions, and other guided protocols. If your symptoms seem aligned with this condition, you may want to consider such a program. https://drruscio.com/?p=30014 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 196New IBS Test with IBS & SIBO Researcher Dr. Mark Pimentel

An important contributing factor to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a food poisoning incident (and subsequent antibodies to a toxin called cytolethal distending toxin B, or CdtB). CdtB looks like a protein made by the body and can trigger autoimmunity that disrupts motility in the intestines. Dr. Mark Pimentel and his colleagues developed a blood test that tests for these antibodies, called IBS-smart. This blood test can be ordered by your doctor as a first-step to screen for IBS. It is designed to be covered by insurance. If you're suffering from IBS-like symptoms, this test may save you time and money by verifying your IBS. As well, your level of antibodies (if present) can help inform you as to the severity of your condition and may inform treatment. https://drruscio.com/?p=29842 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? The connection between the gut and brain is powerful, and often not realized by the general public. When Dr. Aleksandra Gioe was faced with severe anxiety, she tried natural solutions like chamomile tea and holy basil. But these supplements didn't address the more profound roots of her condition: gut inflammation. She also was suffering from bloating and chronic hives but didn't link these with her anxiety. After just beginning the protocol from Healthy Gut, Healthy You, most notably the low FODMAP diet and probiotic protocol, she has seen an 80% reduction in all of her symptoms. Other patients have seen a reduction in symptoms like brain fog and depression from treating their gut dysbiosis. https://drruscio.com/?p=29840 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 195The Science Behind Intermittent Fasting and Circadian Rhythm

Intermittent fasting (or time-restricted feeding) is a method of limiting the time window you eat each day to a consistent number of hours and a consistent time each day. Between 8-10 hours of eating window is considered optimal in humans, which leaves 14-16 hours for your body to fast. This period allows your organs a break from digesting so they can heal. This can reduce leaky gut and improve blood sugar and blood pressure. Early studies showed that genetically identical mice fed the same number of calories became unhealthy when allowed to "free feed" (eat at any time) but lost weight when their feeding hours were restricted. Studies on humans have shown the same response. As a general rule of thumb, stay within a 10-hour eating window for at least 12 weeks to see best results, and stop eating at least 2-3 hours before sleeping. https://drruscio.com/?p=29660 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 195Genetic Testing & Treatment

bonus

In recent times, some types of genetic testing, like both diagnostic and predictive testing, have become more popular. These tests offer the potential to identify whether a current health condition might be affected by your genes, or whether you have a higher likelihood of developing certain conditions. Although these tests can offer some insights—such as whether your genes are processing glutamate well or producing too much or little estrogen—their predictive abilities should still be taken with a grain of salt. The science is still new and the effect of a few genes on an entire body is complex and not entirely understood. Likelihoods and probabilities are not certainties. In many cases, a traditional method of treatment and tailoring based on individual response can still be the best course of action. However, if you are facing a complex health condition, genetic testing may help shed additional light on your case. https://drruscio.com/?p=29658 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is finally available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 194Taking Care of Your Body's Energy Source

Mitochondria are organelles, or "small bodies", within your cells responsible for producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of the body. If mitochondria aren't functioning properly, your cells aren't fed. Some contributors to mitochondrial damage include environmental toxins like Roundup in food, poor diet that includes refined carbohydrates and added sugars, and even too many nutrients overall. The result could be inflammation, and other conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, infertility, or neural degeneration. To restore optimal function, consider a regimen that avoids packaged, processed foods and incorporates polyphenols and heart health supplements. Ep 193Retrain Your Brain, Fix Your Gut

Sometimes the limbic brain can become stuck in a negative cycle conditioned by trauma or stress. When this happens, mysterious conditions like chronic illness and gut imbalances can take hold in the body. Symptoms can include, but are not limited to, bloating, headaches, and an inability to relax, but also more severe symptoms like chronic fatigue, IBS, inflammation, or chronic pain. To break the cycle and restore homeostasis, extended meditation is highly recommended. As well, an anti-inflammatory diet, restorative sleep, and exercise can help. Ep 193Which Is Better, Low Fat or Low Carb?

bonus

The recent DIETFITS study explored how well people would do on a low-carb vs. a low-fat diet, based on genotype or the way they secrete insulin. The results of the study didn't reveal a link with genotype pattern or insulin. But they showed roughly equal weight-loss success for participants on both diets. Notably, the study forbid participants in both diets to eat added sugar or refined grain, and encouraged both groups to eat copious vegetables. More than whether your diet is high-fat or low-fat, it seems that high-quality whole foods are a critical factor in healthy weight loss. https://drruscio.com/?p=29414 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 192Testing To Predict Response To A Low FODMAP Diet

The GA-map test looks for signs of gut dysbiosis (or imbalance of your gut microbiome). This test is closest, clinically, to mapping the gut microbiota. European researchers sequenced the gut bacteria from healthy individuals and bacterial profiles from individuals with IBS and IBD. Then they compared the two, identifying bacterial "targets" that varied between healthy and IBS/IBD populations. If you were to take the test, you could get a dysbiosis index (or rating) from one to five, indicating how healthy or out of balance your gut was. One study used the GA-map to analyze the effects of diet on the microbiota. They noted that the low FODMAP diet markedly impacts the microbiome. In the future, your functional medicine doctor might use your dysbiosis index score to assess what treatments or diets to recommend. In the present, following a gut health algorithm and looking for symptomatic improvement is still a great option. https://drruscio.com/?p=29065 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 192Do Probiotics Cause SIBO? What the Research Shows

bonus

A handful of studies studying the effects of probiotics may be taken out of context. One study on Align probiotic (a Bifidobacterium infantis strain) showed that a few healthy people who took it for several weeks tested positive for methane on a SIBO lactulose breath test. No significant change in symptoms was noted, most likely indicating only that the probiotics had transiently built up in their digestive systems. The vast majority of evidence indicates that probiotics crowd out harmful bacteria without colonizing your gut. They are worth seriously considering to fight SIBO, fungal overgrowth, and leaky gut, and lessen many digestive symptoms. https://drruscio.com/?p=29064 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 191Steps to Lower your Alzheimer's Risk, with Dr. Dale Bredesen

bonus

A diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (or similar degenerative neurological conditions) is devastating, as so far no cure exists. However, recent studies into the condition show that the amyloid plaque responsible for Alzheimer's symptoms may form as a protective mechanism against other threats to the body. Promising research into the disease shows the possibility of prevention and even reversal of cognitive decline. There may be multiple risk factors for Alzheimer's, such as chronic inflammation, chronic infections, tick-borne illnesses, the presence of the ApoE4 gene, mold or heavy metals toxicity, hormone changes, and others. Getting a "cognoscopy" at age 45 could give early warning indicators. Prevention protocols may vary widely amongst individuals. Ep 190An Easy On-Ramp to the Keto Diet with Dr. Josh Axe

The ketogenic (or keto) diet emphasizes high fat, low carbohydrates, and medium protein intake. In some studies, the keto diet has been shown to benefit sufferers of epilepsy, insulin regulation, polycystic ovary syndrome, infertility, glioblastoma, and more. One common misconception is that you must be on the diet forever for it to be valuable. Beginners to the diet may want to start slow, replacing some of their carb intake with healthy fats. Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine have lessons to offer about the value of herbs, synergistic effects, and the overall body environment. On any diet, whether paleo, keto, Mediterranean, or another type, it's important to emphasize high-quality whole foods. https://drruscio.com/?p=28843 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at: https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 1903 Simple Steps to Naturally Treat PMS

bonus

Symptoms from Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) can be a challenging part of many women's monthly cycles. Two recent studies on adolescents show that vitamin D can be a safe and effective method for reducing these symptoms, lessening anxiety, irritability, sadness, cramps, and other associated issues. These benefits were not gained by the placebo group. Gut health and non-hormonal herbal supplements are other avenues to consider if your vitamin D levels are already optimal. https://drruscio.com/?p=28840 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 189Effective Anti-Aging Treatments for Hair Loss and Skin

When considering your options for anti-aging treatments for skin or hair loss therapy, know that individuals respond differently to different treatments. Together with your doctor, you'll want to consider the possible causes of your hair loss or skin health to determine the best course of action. Some of the main drugs on the market like Rogaine (minoxidil), which stimulates blood flow to hair follicles, and Propecia (finasteride), an oral dihydrotestosterone (DHT) blocker, are designed to treat the most common cause of hair loss in men and women, androgenetic alopecia. However, causes may not be as clear-cut for all women. PRP injections, dermarolling, low-level light therapy and stem cells offer fairly natural ways to stimulate your body's own healing responses, for skin rejuvenation and hair loss reversal. No magic bullet exists, but these therapies may also be used in combination, potentially yielding synergistic, better results. https://drruscio.com/?p=28622 My book is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 189Light and EMFs: Invisible Effects, and Fixes for Your Home

bonus

Artificial light and electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are an inescapable reality of city environments. Rather than sleeping when the sunlight tells us to, we alter our circadian rhythms with electric light, sometimes at the expense of our immune system and sleep quality. Artificial lights that mimic the sun may provide a more natural environment for our bodies. EMFs emanating from our devices may generate heat, disrupt melatonin and even cause mechanical vibration of cell membranes. Ways to lessen EMF exposure include putting your phone into airplane mode while sleeping, keeping it away from your body, and avoiding the use of your laptop on your lap. Checking your home with an EMF detector may also reveal external sources, which you can block while you sleep using some forms of shielding. https://drruscio.com/?p=28620 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 188Female Hormone Solutions with Dr. Anna Cabeca

When women enter perimenopause and menopause, estrogen declines and other female hormonal cycles shift. Even younger women can experience female hormone imbalances. Managing gut health differently can be one foundational piece to restoring balance. Gluconeogenesis (using glucose for fuel) is an estrogen-dependent process, so a diet that uses ketones can be beneficial in the midst of hormonal changes. Expert Dr. Anna Cabeca's patients have seen success with a combination of a ketogenic-alkaline diet, lifestyle, and, in some cases, supplements. Other factors may skew balance and are worth looking into, like stress, lack of vitamin D, inflammation, and food or toxin sensitivities. https://drruscio.com/?p=28606 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 188How Your Gut Health Affects Your Hormones

bonus

It can be frustrating if you've followed all the right advice on being healthy, and your gut and hormones are still acting up. Daffnee was in great physical shape, with several exercise classes a week, on the paleo diet, sleeping well, and taking birth control. Her existing IBS and celiac were under control. But her gut health was mysteriously declining, giving her bloating, brain fog, fatigue and more. When she began following steps from the Healthy Gut, Healthy You protocol, like targeted probiotics and adrenal support, she started feeling healthy and energetic again. She was able to support her hormones better too, and successfully transitioned off 10 years of birth control with no side effects. https://drruscio.com/?p=28605 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is finally available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 187Parasites and Your Gut Issues: What To Know

Parasites were once a trendy topic to discuss in gut health, now small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) is a buzzword. Both still play a real role and should be considered if you are struggling with dysbiosis, inflammation, or other chronic conditions. Parasites may fuel changes in the microbiome, but can also take advantage of an already compromised gut. Holistic solutions and supporting the gut terrain are key. Frank pathogens should always be treated. Testing and treatment options are advancing, but still imperfect, so diagnoses and protocols still rely on a medical professional's best judgment. https://drruscio.com/?p=28269 My book Healthy Gut, Healthy You is available at https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 186Should You Test For SIBO with Leonard Weinstock

Some debates about small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) can take information out of context. A nuanced examination of relapse rates after Rifaximin, or breath test intervals, may spur a conclusion that SIBO treatments and tests just don't work. Research disagrees over the extent to which antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials, probiotics, the low FODMAP diet, and other treatments impact SIBO. SIBO is a complex condition, and treating for the root cause is important. We discuss our clinical perspectives and the latest research on SIBO testing and treatment. https://drruscio.com/?p=28107 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Ep 186Fatty Liver Improves with Probiotics – High-Level Scientific Evidence

bonus

The gut and the liver may be more connected than you expect: probiotics can reduce liver enzymes from non-alcoholic fatty liver. A recent meta-analysis showed that two liver enzymes, ALT and AST, a byproduct of liver damage, were significantly reduced in test patients when taking lactobacillus-bifidobacterium blends of probiotics. Insulin resistance also improved. If you're struggling with a liver condition, it's important to consider the impact of your gut health. https://drruscio.com/?p=28102 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Ep 185PRP Injections for Hair Loss, Does It Work?

In the last several years, medical specialists have started using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to address both skin rejuvenation and hair loss for men and women. Hair loss can often be associated with loss of blood flow to the scalp. PRP, which is "spun up" from your own blood, is a relatively safe and natural way to stimulate hair growth or collagen production in the skin. Results vary, but with minimal side effects and relatively low cost, PRP treatment is worth investigating. https://drruscio.com/?p=27839 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Ep 185Improving Memory Through Proper Exposure to Light

bonus

New scientific findings show that natural light, and light bulbs which closely mimic natural light, are closely tied to optimal memory formation. Light anchors the timing of our circadian rhythms, impacting sleep. The better you sleep, the better you encode memory. Indoor light bulbs which have less natural tones and brightness can have a detrimental effect on memory. Even if you optimize your indoor conditions, it's important to get outside regularly. Technology that pulses light shows promise if you're a jet-lagged traveler, shift worker, or someone who stays out late on weekends. https://drruscio.com/?p=27834 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You. Ep 184Simple Keys for Ending Your Joint Pain Using Regenerative Injection Therapies with Dr. Tyna Moore

Regenerative injection therapies like Prolotherapy, PRP, and Stem Cell therapy are becoming more widely known as treatments for joint pain. While Stem Cell therapy has grown in popularity, it's older counterparts - prolotherapy and PRP still serve a great deal of purpose when it comes to treating joint pain. When it comes to cost, risk, and invasiveness, Prolotherapy is the least, followed by PRP then Stem Cell therapy. It can be advantageous to seek out a practitioner who has been doing this kind of work, starting with Prolotherapy, for many years. They will be your best guide for treatment. So before you race out to get Stem Cell therapy, keep an open mind and consider that a lower cost, lower risk, (Prolo or PRP) therapy might be just the thing you need. https://drruscio.com/?p=27637 My new book is finally available: Click here to learn more: https://drruscio.com/getgutbook/ Looking for more? Ep 184How To Get Off Thyroid Medication

bonus

When you're sick and want to feel better, options like taking medication seem rather attractive. One thing to be aware of, is the over-prescribing of thyroid medication. Many people do not need to be on Thyroid medication for life or at all. Unfortunately, over-diagnosis is becoming too common. One study looking at the overuse of Levothyroxine Replacement Therapy, found that 60% of those on LT4 did not need to be taking it. The study concluded that the diagnosis needs to be more firmly established before treatment initiation and to undertake periodic evaluation of all patients on chronic LT4 treatment. https://drruscio.com/?p=27634 My new book is finally available: Healthy Gut, Healthy You.
