EP 53: DW "The Pilot" and Classy thoughts

Throughout the review of "The Pilot" we drift on and off topic about Capaldi's regeneration, The Tenth Planet Cybermen, The First Doctor Companion Chronicle story with Steven Taylor "The Locked Room." I discuss the beautiful horror aspect of this episode, making the sound of unexpected running water scary. EP 51: Louise Jameson interview
The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast is very fortunate to have Louise Jameson on the podcast for about an hours time. We talk to her about acting, her time on Doctor Who in the 70's, her work as an actor, writer and director with Big Finish. Some of the people she worked with, such as Virginia Hey (4th Doctor Adventures: White Ghosts; Farscape) and Sir John Hurt (The War Doctor - Series 4: Casualties of War). Her time with Tom Baker in the 70's and some cast spoilers but no story line spoilers for a future Fourth Doctor Adventure featuring the Doctor and Leela. We had a great time, and are very thankful for the time Louise Jameson took out of her busy schedule to appear on our podcast. EP 48: Over produced podcast for December 2016 Doctor Who reviews
Episode 48 of the Doctor Who Alhambra Podcast, first official one with the new logo! In this episode of the podcast, we get to hear how Liam (@djNezumi) is getting older, the River Song audios have given us a change of opinion, Brett (@Mavic_Chen) might have an unhealthy fixation on the Great British Bake-Off. On the bright side, he no longer is rooting for Flip, the 6th Doctor's companion, to die. Near the end of the podcast, Liam begins to whisper talk, perhaps he's baby sitting Legeon's new offspring. Many of the news items we find off the amazing website: doctorwhonews.net. We talk about the new Fantom Publishing: Who Talks, An Unearthly Child and Cyber 60s. Doctor Who spin-off: CLASS will begin airing on BBC One, while those in the states get to wait until April. Power of the Daleks last animated review
In this episode of The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, Brett takes a quick look at the colourized and black & white of episode 6 and final episode in the animated classic Power of the Daleks, while looking at the Telesnaps from DWM SE #35. The 3D colourized Daleks go from being OK at times, but there are some issues. However, at the end of the day, we finally have Patrick Troughton's first story, Doctor Who's first regeneration story back in a visual format. EP 46: The Power of Kroll Audio Focus Review
Episode 46 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast focuses on the classic Doctor Who story (#102) The Power of Kroll. The Power of Kroll by Robert Holmes The 5th story of season 16 of Doctor Who, which was actually suppose to be the 4th story in the Key to Time, until it was swapped with The Androids of Tara. The Power of Kroll was the second story written by Robert Holmes in the Key to Time series, (The Ribos Operation being the first story Robert Holmes wrote). Writer Ted Lewis was unable to complete the story he was working on called Shield of Zarak. The Lost Episodes: Doctor Who http://www.shannonsullivan.com/doctorwho/lostrz.html The Time Warrior (to be recorded in December) Please stay tuned for those releases, and further releases when we focus merely on the strength of the story and storytelling, and ignore the visuals. EP 45: A "Power"ful animated review "of the Daleks" episode 5 with Liam's thought on
In this longer episode of The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, Brett takes a quick look at the colourized and black & white of episode 5 of the animated classic Power of the Daleks, while looking at the Telesnaps from DWM SE #35. The 3D colourized Daleks go from being OK at times to (see end of episode 3) to breathtakingly awesome (see end of episode 5). As much as I do dislike the sloppiness of the animation at times, I am very grateful for having this episode back in some visual format. I also have a previously recorded conversation with Liam discussing The Power of the Daleks and the Patrick Troughton era. Then of course we go off on a tangent or...a lot. So because of Liam's contribution, I think I'll classify this as an official Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, so episode 45! Oh yeah, Duff man's got another official podcast to listen to! In this short episode of The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, Brett takes a quick look at episode 3 of the animated classic Power of the Daleks. EP 43: October Big Finish reviews, News and someone is a moron
Episode 43 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast In this episode of the Alhambra Podcast, the trio of Brett (@Mavic_Chen) and Liam (@djNezumi) and Legeon (@legeonhenderson) reunite and bring an enjoyable hour (or more) discussion and sci-fi silliness for the month of October 2016. Starting off with the news! We are not reviewing Doctor Who - CLASS until it is released visually on BBC America, which will be around January 2017. We discussed the release of Doctor Who CLASS three book release by BBC books. Talking points: " If you could only one choice one boxed set "Doom Coalition" or "War Doctor" or other boxed set series, what would it be and why? I read a transcript from Whooverville 8 panel interview, from the Pubcast and Tin-Dog Podcast. Here is the transcript that I made and read on the podcast. It's not exact word-for-word. Question from the Pubcast: "Is there anything you would have liked to do on Doctor Who that you weren't able to do?" Eric Seyward: "I would have like to have a female companion a little bit tougher, a little bit more real, to contribute a little bit more. Tegan and Nyssa became redundant, it was difficult to fit them into stories. Tegan spent most of her time moaning, and Nyssa looking aloof and whatever. We had so many of them, Turlough, so three of them at one stage. With the exception of Turlough, they really couldn't contribute massively, because when you are driving around in deep space in a TARDIS. Tegan is from 1980 Earth, and she couldn't really contribute, because whenever they arrived somewhere she has to ask questions, and it makes her boring. But I would have liked to have had fewer companion, if you had a female one, certainly one that is stronger more positive contribution. I probably would have chosen one from deep space, where should would have the sort of knowledge that could compete with the Doctor. Minute 22:57 The Tin Dog Podcast: I loved the Terileptil (from The Visitation) have you ever approached or have been approached by Big Finish, to say "can we have them on this, because it's a lot cheaper with make-up? Because I think as a race, they would really have legs on audio Eric Seyward: Big Finish, they've never approached me for anything. It would make them more interesting. The Tin Dog Podcast: You seem to have a whole world building thing with them, rather than having them as the Villain of the Week. They had a society and they built beautiful things like androids. It sounds like there was more thought put in them than other... Eric Seyward: - Goes into the backstory of the Terileptil (However) The Tin Dog goes onto ask Eric Seyward about the story of The Visitation, noting that this story was the one selected as the story for the book "The Making of Doctor Who." By the way The Tin Dog asked this question, you can tell this is a special story to Michael, and wants to know more, saying that fans didn't have access to much Doctor Who content, so when it came out it was loved and cherished. The Visitation was the concentrated storyline in "The Making of Doctor Who" book. Yet Eric Seyward goes onto crap on The Tin Dog's question/reference, saying The Visitation wasn't a special story, it just happened to be the one that was in production at the time. One positive from the podcast was the Pubcast and Tin-Dog podcast panel interview, where Sophie Aldread's Go Fund Me project: "Strangeness in Space" a free podcast radio drama. http://strangenessinspace.com/episodes/ or on iTunes. Thanks to www.doctorwhonews.net for the up to date DW news! EP 32: End-of-Year 2015 Big Finish ranges Reviews
In episode 32, we begin with Doctor Who News, discussing the news that was revealed at Big Finish Day 8 with more Blake's 7, War Doctor Box set 4 with Leela. Starting with the month of January, we have some clips from Main Range 195 Mistfall, by Andrew Smith (writer of the classic story Full Circle). We gave some thoughts about the 4th Doctor getting an new companion that was not on the classic series (like the 6th Doctor). We speculate on the Big Finish Novel Adaptation #11 being Lungbarrow as we review The Romance of Crime and The English Way of Death. I talk about my love of Film Noir detective radio shows, and why I appreciate The Avengers. Liam explains to me the how Dark Shadows: Bloodlust works and thoughts on that range. Liam also continues to work on me to give Rise of the Runelords a listen, explaining and educating me on legends and D&D mythology. We continue on with the year's review looking at Main Range 196 release, Equilibrium, by Matt Litton. Liam gets after me (rightly so too), because I have not watched/listened to Blake's 7, Pathfinders, and then Gallifrey series, because my jumping on point was Gallifrey 7: Intervention Earth, due to reviews that I read told me it's a good jumping on point. We then look at the final episode of the 5th Doctor E-Space Trilogy, The Entropy Plague, by Jonathan Morris. I go on about how great Requiem for the Rocket Men, by John Dorney, and the greatness of the Rocket Men trilogy using clips to try to prove my point. Discuss Dark Eyes series 4 and the downfalls of this range compared to the greatness of Doom Coalition range. I share a few clips and share my love for the Novel Adaptation The Well-Mannered War by Gareth Roberts. We also discuss the possibilities of if the unresolved ending to the Well-Mannered War will get resolved in Series 5 of The 4th Doctor Adventures. Episode 32 includes all the Big Finish titles either Brett or Liam has listened to and reviewed from January 2015 through April 2015. EP 29: Time and the Rani Audio Focus Review
On this episode of The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, we focus on the audio only on Time and the Rani to see if the story holds up on its own without the visuals. Or this classic Doctor Who story is rightly slotted as one of the worse episodes to hit the television screens (Ranked 158 in DWM poll of 163 total episodes in 2003; Ranked 198 in DWM poll of 200 in 2009; Ranked 239 in DWM poll of 241 in 2014). In we do pull some audio from the Cast and Crew commentary from the 2Entertain DVD "Time and the Rani" as well the documentary "Last Chance Saloon," found on the special features of the DVD. We also pull excerpts from Big Finish's recent "The Sixth Doctor: Last Adventure" along with a special piece from an audio play written by Nev Fountain for Big Finish (I'd tell you what it is, but I'd rather you listen to the podcast and see if you think similarly to me regarding Pip and Jane Baker). EP 27: September 2015 Catch-up Podcast of all things Doctor Who
In this episode of the Doctor Who Alhambra Podcast, we go over the news relating to Doctor Who as well as Big Finish from the time of our last podcast. Please excuse the extremely nasally sounds coming from my voice, as Brett has been ill for quite some time. Luckily we have the great support and reliable voice and contributions from Liam. After the news we start our review the Big Finish Main Range release #203 Terror of the Sontarans featuring the 7th Doctor and Mel. Moving on to the other main range release #204 Criss-Cross featuring the 6th Doctor and his meeting his new companion Constance Clarke. From there we move onto the 3rd Doctor Boxed Set with the stories Prisoners of the Lake and The Havoc of Empires. Next we move to the second series of The Early Adventures featuring the 2nd Doctor, Ben, Polly and and Jamie in a full cast audio The Yes Men. Finally we finish off the Big Finish review portion of the podcast by looking briefly at the Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood: Conspiracy, as well as the non-Doctor Who releases The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Pathfinders Mummy's Mask: The Half-Dead City. We end the podcast looking at the two new series 9 of Doctor Who, The Magician's Apprentice and The Witch's Familiar. We discuss what we liked about these new episodes, and how Steven Moffat toys with creating things that will explain continuity and then takes a dump on it. Our next Audio Edition Review will be The Time and the Rani. Please listen to the story, and send us a tweet or an email about your audio only experience. EP 26: Audio Focus Review of The Twin Dilemma
Episode 26 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast starts off with some fun banter between Brett and Liam. We bring up the discussion of "what is cannon" if one is not able to read the Doctor Who books, comic books, and graphic novels, would that be considered cannon to that individual. Where as is Big Finish cannon to those who don't enjoy listening to their Doctor Who in an audio format. We make many attempts to do the Audio Edition review of The Twin Dilemma story, but both Brett and Liam get in the way of reviewing the story as we discuss: Reality Shows, Budget Constraints on Doctor Who, why the 6th Doctor era is not well like by fans (brought up many times), 1st and 6th Doctor character improvements because of Big Finish, Lucy Miller and Flipp's accent, and Flipp is a character, Jonathan Morris' twitter reply to my question about "We Are the Daleks" question about why the Imperial Dalek appears on the cover art (explained horribly), The Enemy of the World DVD release, Nichola Bryant being rescued by nudist followed my exprience with naked UK bikers. Regardless of all the tangents we get on, we do review The Twin Dilemma. Stay tuned for our next Podcast in September, when we look at the new Doctor Who News, the Big Finish releases for the month of September, the New Doctor Who TV episodes. Our next Audio Edition Review will be The Time and the Rani. Please listen to the story, and send us a tweet or an email about your audio only experience. EP 25: Doctor Who, Big Finish and Accent reviews for August 2015
In this episode of Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, we look into any recent Doctor Who news, as we eagerly approach the September 19th release of series 9 of the new series of Doctor Who. Thanks to DoctorWhoNews.net for providing the news we featured on this episode. Once we begin the reviews, we discuss the Iris Wildthyme series 5: Wildthyme Reloaded release briefly. Make a connection between the Omega Factor series and the X-Files. Big Finish release #202 The Warehouse, featuring the 7th Doctor and Mel is discussed with some of our complaints regarding this average, good jumping point episode, and 1980's TV style of making a Doctor Who. Next we have a spoiler heavy review and discussion of the Fourth Doctor Adventure 4.08, Return to Telos. Liam totally comes to the defense of this story, and finds it being one of the best two-parter 4th Doctor Adventures and a great 4th Doctor story. I find myself on the other end on this release, and provide reasons why it is less than spectacular. Next, we look at The Sixth Doctor: Final Adventure release, which wraps up the Colin Baker's time as the Doctor finally complete, as we now have a proper regeneration story for the 6th Doctor that ties up some questions fans have had since Time and the Rani (except if you are into the BBC Books and perfer Spiral Scratch by Gary Russell). We finish off this months reviews with This is Colin Baker Big Finish Interview, featuring Colin Baker interviewed by Big Finish's own Nick Briggs. After the good bye's and beggin for downloads on the iTunes subscriptions, emailing the show, or tweet one of us, we have a special thing that was teased. As mentioned on earlier on the show, Liam asked that I attach my attempt at mastering a British accent from some guy on YouTube. List and enjoy how horrible it actually is! EP 24: July 2015 Big Finish reviews, Doctor Who series 9 talk, and rants
EWelcome to The Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast, with real Doctor Who fans, sharing their real Doctor Who opinions. Discussing but not limited to new and classic Doctor Who, Big Finish audios, latest DW and BF news, and much more! Episode 24 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra Podcast we look at some news, review Big Finish releases for the month of July 2015, and rant about this and that off and on. We start off the podcast with the news and discuss the anticipation to series 9 of New Who with information about series 10 being picked up. Next we hit Big Finish news regarding further cast information in the new Torchwood audio series. Then we discuss the Big Finish survey and the ultimate question "which Big Finish stories are people's favorites?" During this discussion, we go off in a tangent and defend Colin Baker's era. Eventually we get to the Big Finish releases for the month of July, getting into the main range release "We Are the Daleks" by Jonathan Morris. But then we quickly get on another tangent distracting us from this story, going from Big Finish cleaning up after Steven Moffat's giant Dalek building on Assylum of the Daleks, followed by the annoyance of the replican people Dalek stuff. A further rant continues with the new Dalek Collection DVD release, which as a waste of money, then change directions in midstream and quickly discuss The Adventures of Sarah Jane Smith darkness and how Big Finish could fill in the cracks since Liz Sladen's passing. The possiblity of Susan regenerating and asking Steven Moffat to at least make some other Big Finish reference besides "Night of the Doctor." To the surprise of Liam, I do come to the defense of Steven Moffat as I did see his masterplan for the Matt Smith era and some of series 7 isn't his fault. Continuing on yet another tangent, I share my dislike for many of Sylvester McCoy's stories. Once we get back to Big Finish reviews, we discuss Nick Brigg's 4th Doctor Adventure, The Fate of Krelos, where Liam suggests a challenge to me regarding my approach to listening to Big Finish. Finally, we end with a quick review of Counter Measures box set 4 and some talk on Dark Shadows and The Avengers audio play takes. In episode 20 of the podcast we catch up with what each other has been watching and/or listening to since last we recorded. Liam tells of his experiences in America. Next we look at the connections between some of the lost classic Doctor Who serials and a landfill in a New Mexico desert (audio segements came from ATARI: Game Over, a documentary made in 2014). I reference some facts that The Tin-Dog Podcast's host Michael, has made in some of his past podcasts (I don't know which one, but I'm sure they exist). Once we hit the news, Liam shares his frustration with Disney and their lack of consideration towards Star Wars fans for what they'll be doing with the continuity established in the book series once episode VII comes out in December. We discuss the news and future releases from Big Finish regarding Torchwood, Doom Coalistion, The Worlds of Big Finish (extreme crossover release) and it's potiential marketing sceme. When we get to the reviews we first finish discussing The Two Doctors classic story, focusing on audio only, but my explaining of what happened visually to add clarification to the story. Next we discuss the Big Finish releases: The Defectors - by Nick Briggs; Last of the Cybermen - by Alan Barnes; Death Match - by Matt Fitton; Suburban Hell - by Alan Barnes; The Well-Mannered War - by Gareth Roberts, adapted by John Dorney; Damaged Goods - by Russell T. Mini Episode (Teaser) for Episode 20
As we prepare to release episode 20 of the DoctorWho: Alhambra podcast, we release this mini episode to let you know we are still here! Here are the main points that'll be discussed in Episode 20 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra podcast. The idea of looking in landfills to find missing episodes of the lost Classic Doctor Who series. We look at what's new in the News as well as the up and coming releases for Big Finish. We'll argue about the "greatness" regarding the new Big Finish range set to be released in September 2015. Next, we review and share our thoughts on the April and May releases from Big Finish, featuring: DW Main Range, 4th Doctor Adventures, DW Novel Adaptations, Jago & Litefoot, and Terrahawks. Followed by a long discussion as to why I can't get past episode 2 of Terrahawks, and Liam defends its awesomeness and compares it (wrongly) to Red Dwarf. Finally, we'll finish our look at The Two Doctors, without visuals. Please share this podcast with friends! Email the show at [email protected] Tweet us @AlhambraPodcast, @djNezumi & @Mavic_Chen
EP 19: Audio Focus of The Two Doctors & March reviews for '15
Episode 19 of the Doctor Who: Alhambra podcast begins with a quick discussion of what we've been watching or listening to since the last podcast. During the news segment we discuss DWM #285 celebration issue of Ten years of Doctor Who back on TV. Share thoughts of what we like and what we don't like, and Liam argues that perhaps Big Finish's Doctor Who releases were better than some of the TV stuff. Brett argues that it all went down hill when RTD left as it became more of a who's the companion compared to the Doctor's story, also perhaps Matt Smith's departure could have messed with Moffat's overall plan. From there we continue the saga discussion known as The State of Big Finish, as we again vent our frustrations with lack of discounts for the big supporters of many of their ranges, yet do crazy discount price reductions that give random guy a +50% discount on a large portion of their ranges. Liam informs me about an American radio show featuring zombies, where which Brett randomly complains about the zombie genre. We smoothly transition to Survivors Series 2 box set trailer release, to the 8th Doctor Doom Coalition release, as well as the great news of Big Finish retaining their Doctor Who license till the year 2020. As we turn our attention to the releases for the month of March, we discuss the last of the E-Space trilogy for the 5th Doctor main range, probably one of the best releases for this trilogy. We discuss some of the releases you might need to listen to, #136 Cobwebs, #174 Prisoners of Fate also written by Jonathan Morris, who also penned #197 The Entrophy Plague (if you haven't purchased or listened to all of the main range releases once Big Finish reunited the crowded Tardis, these would be the ones you'd need to listen to in order to understand the timeline of Nyssa). Then we get to discuss the 4th Doctor Adventures, and this release, 4.03 Requiem for the Rocket Men by John Dorney, is one of the first releases in which Liam and Brett have a difference of opinion regarding this range (the first one being 3.02 White Ghosts). We finish off the podcast with Liam giving his thoughts on Blake's 7 Ghost Ship (February) and Devil's Advocate (March), and Vienna Series 2. We finish the podcast reviewing the classic Doctor Who episode "The Two Doctors" as we see this show without seeing it. Liam watches it in his normal way, and Brett watches it without the visual as we try to figure out if the story holds up, acting, plot, overall viewing pleasure without visuals. We have some dynomite discussions as I share my frustrations with not being able to visually see it, as Liam asks questions regarding what is something actually like. Although I haven't finished watching it visually or audioly, the Two Doctors is an amazing story, very strong and enjoyable. Give it a watch without watching it and see if what it's like if you were unable to see this story. EP 17: January DW and Big Finish review
Episode 17 starts out with us talking about what we've been watching and listening to since last podcast. From there we move on to Doctor Who and Big Finish news. Next, we look at "The State of Big Finish," where we look at their growth from 2013 to present. We do vent some frustration and annoyances with the lack of communication Big Finish has with their subscribers, but we do keep in mind that Big Finish does produce high quality audio dramas and we eagerly anticipate each month's release. Then, we review the Main Range release 195 Mistfall, the first part of the 5th Doctor E-Space Trilogy. From there we move to the Tom Baker release beginning with the 4th Doctor Adventure, The Exxilons, then transition to the Novalizations, The English Way of Death and Romance of Crime. We acknowledge the Short Trips "Flywheel Revolution" and The Avengers Vol 3 release, but have no review at this time. Liam finishes off with his thoughts on Blake's 7 full cast, Mindset, and the last Pathfinders Legend story for series 1. Cam tries to make sense of some of the Pathfinders as well as the Dark Shadows - Bloodlush ranges. The show finishes off with the audio only review of the Sixth Doctor classic story, Mindwarp, and the tie-ins with Antidote of Oblivian, Peri and the Piscon Paradox, The Widow's Assassin, and The Rani's Elite (spoilers may occur if you haven't listened to any of those stories).
