It’s an engrossing one, which will have you thinking hard at the end - some very important nuggets to consider and definitely some very helpful wisdom and gold to enjoy. It was a terrifying scene, but Leon is someone who runs on in when people are running away, and therefore exactly the kind of person the force requires. So while this is not your regular star studded Distraction Pieces episode, it’s a very powerful and moving account of a man who ran towards trouble, and has since been dealing with the aftershocks. You’ll also detect that Leon is a painfully humble man when describing the night, but also very open as he goes into the effect it all had on his personal life, so you can expect inspiration from all sides - in how he dealt with the situation the night of, and how he addressed his own trouble thereafter. Some of which was self inflicted, by his own admission, but we are all human beings and absolutely not perfect, especially when dealing with such intense drama, job or not. MVP is an awe inspiring fighter, and for even the fairest weather fans of mixed martial arts his skill will dazzle you. With a unique style and mad victory set pieces, he’s become full on notorious in the sport and here he gets a good chance to catch up with Pip on all aspects, including the swiftness of the MMA universe, how he wants people to stick around for the whole thing - not just him, how you can enjoy and absorb so much more in MMA when you educate yourself on the moves, his family being into early kung fu film classics (must be some Wu Tang or 36 Chambers action in there somewhere), how hard it would be to transition to MMA from boxing, focusing on his strengths in training to catapult him to success, sprawl and brawl, having faith in his coach, being present in a fight and not studying tapes, how trash talk only works if it’s your true self talking it, being true to your personality, and everything else in between - including those amazing victory set pieces (as well as the full background behind the Pokemon one!). You wouldn’t have known she was hungover if she hadn’t have mentioned it, as she rattles through so many entertaining and interesting talking points about her own life and all things cookery, ranging from her Paddington beginnings, growing up in an aristocratic but less than well-off family with not a ton of parental guidance, her bodypiercing route and how she could have even gone on a completely art-based route, the death of her father in her early years but how she never used this as an excuse for going off the rails temporarily as a young’un, being ADHD but locking in and focusing, how she operates with such a busy brain, being her mum’s cookery sidekick and how traveling broadened her culinary palate, her family’s spiritual side, ill-informed people giving advice on social media, the demonisation of eating habits, body image and shaming, her entirely reasonable snubbing of the GQ awards and cooking technique over speed. How this much was crammed into a pretty short chat is a miracle but it’s just gripping throughout. Enjoy your time in Gizzi’s amazing world!• QUICK NOTE! I mentioned it in the intro but the episode is a touch on the reverby side.
