Nor was it disinterest. Karl was looking through the world through a different prism, and certainly a prism of which we should all have a go at experiencing. It’s really nice hearing him get around ideas at leisure and with Pip (and us) as a sounding board, and definitely a really cool way of sharing the worldview of one of the more fascinating characters in the cast of podcasts, series and media in general. The two get into it all, from the origins of podcasting (kind of beginning with the Gervais one of course), to his thoughts on the promo run, to confidence, last minute tinkering, being a fan of real life and the fine line between that and comedy, ponderings on having children, the XFM days, being rubbed the wrong way by Ricky, his genuine curiosity, working on Derek, people being over familiar and a charming spider story to round it off. Well, zero chances of Gerard sightings here, as Pip is joined this week by a mildly abbreviated by nonetheless great chat with the truly excellent director PAUL FEIG!With his new film ‘Last Christmas’ on the horizon, now is the perfect time to catch Paul, and Pip does just that, managing to pick him up on all things directorial and cinematic philosophy. Beginning with the importance of eye contact in an interview, they get cracking on it all - the film in question (‘Last Christmas’), his old Xmas film ‘Grounded’, the perennial success carrot to chase in a Xmas film, whether or not you can have too much fun on set, whether or not moments are funny in front of a crowd, fatal flaws and runaway trains, finding intimacy in London, well rounded characters and not just mindless representation, aiming for a perfect cast, getting along with said cast, film vs TV, the need for honesty behind the scenes, relating to women and a whole lot more in not a huge amount of time… Also some extrapolated thoughts up top from Pip about a point hinted at near the end - all will make sense! Everyone deals with it differently and it’s entirely unique to everyone, no matter who it involves, but the important fact to remember is that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. This is something Cariad reinforces throughout the chat with Pip, and it’s so important to remember, as our brains will have us thinking we’re on our own and have to withdraw from the world to repair. It’s a fascinating chat, as she and Pip go on a voyage - in very upbeat and positive fashion - through the death zone, which leads into topics such as the creation of an environment for a podcast talking about death, the lunacy of ‘@‘ing someone, being in a position to help but not as an expert, the mechanics of grief as well the very personal nature of it, Cariad’s own run-ins with death in her life, how death and grief are confined to the ‘sad room’, the afterlife and the weirdness that entails and the spirituality of atheism.
