S1 Ep 19EP19: Self-Care - 3 Valuable Resources with Susan Pokorny

Self care is a topic that is currently receiving a lot of attention. But despite it being tha latest hot topic, most women still have a hard time giving themselves permission to take care of themselves. Self care is not selfish. It is crucial for our wellbeing and more so when we are going through divorce or any crisis. It allows us to walk through the added responsibilities and stress more effectively. It helps clear our minds to have a better overall outlook. It is setting healthy boundaries for ourselves to manage the three valuable but limited resources that we have - time, money and energy. Susan Pokorny is a trauma informed Yoga trainer, an aromatherapist, an Amazon bestselling author, and is extremely passionate about helping women around the topic of self care. In today's episode we break down the myths around self care and how it relates to our three valuable resources of time, money, and energy. Time A lot of women have bought into the myth that we don't have enough time to take care of ourselves. But we do have time. We only need to evaluate what is essential, what is really going to bring you life, what is going to bring you health and what is going to support you in going through this time. When we make good choices in health and wellness, it can actually give us more time because we're more effective, we're thinking more clearly, our brain is nourished, and we're rested. We can't produce more time, but self care can multiply and maximize the effectiveness of the time that we have. Money Self-care is an investment that we make for ourselves that will benefit in the long run. If you look at investing in whole food, it might cause more upfront, but the long term benefit outweighs the initial investment. We need to look at self-care as putting money into an emotional and physical bank account that's going to build up our resources. But it does not always mean spending more than you normally would. There are a lot of different things that you can to to nurture yourself that costs little to no money. In Susan's book, Two Inches of Wool, she shares hundreds of tips and ideas for self care that don't cost too much money. Energy There are good things that we can do, good choices that we can make in our life that will give us energy and there are choices that will draining us of our energy. We can support our body to do what it needs to do to eliminate the bad stuff. But it needs good fuel, and good food choices fuels our body. It takes energy to go out of our way and make better choices but when we're filling up our health and wellness bank it will help us get through difficult situations. We can look where we could be more proactive and practical with our health. "Self love has measurably deepened my relationships with the people that I love" Self care is investing in yourself that is essential for your long term and short term wellbeing. When we take care of ourselves, we deepen our relationships with those that we care about. That is the essence of self care. It's deepening a relationship with yourself, but it's also, it's giving the best of yourself to doing it. S1 Ep 17EP17: Divorce Doesn't Define Us with Dori Pulse

Going through divorce is a very powerful experience that shapes our characters. It is a time when we are tested to the core, challenged, and prepared for something greater. But divorce does not define us. Divorce is an event that we go through in life. Today's guest is Dori Pulse, the founder of Girl for God Ministries and author of Everything Changed When I Said 'I Do'. She has a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Theology, is a part of a step family for almost 20 years, facilitates divorce care programs at churches, a coach, a Stephen Minister, servant leader, and knows how it is to be in your shoes being married and divorced twice herself. We touch on so many topics which can actually be separate episodes or multi-day workshops. This episode is so insightful, inspiring, and uplifting. Here are some things we discussed: Divorce is the time to be extremely selfish. You need to take care of yourself first, so you can turn and take care of your children and the people around you Setting boundaries is very powerful. It all starts with being very clear about your values and what's important to you, setting these boundaries, communicating them, and most importantly enforcing them. Nobody knows our boundaries unless we tell them what they are. We're the only ones who can decide what those boundaries are for us. It is important to have accountability partners. Godly accountability can come in and give you fresh ideas that can help you see a different twist on things, will hold you accountable, be there to listen without judgement, and would always have your best interest in mind. Have a positive personal recorder. The only thing we can control is ourselves. During divorce when we doubt ourselves and are immersed in a lot of negativity, having positive self talk is extremely important. Spend a lot of time in scripture. When our strength is depleted, we can always rely on scripture to help us get by. "I am God's creation. I am his. He has a plan for me. There is no other man, but Jesus." Always be reminded of your gifts and talents. Journaling is one way to bring them to our conscious mind and be aware of them. When you know your strengths, you have the opportunity to be able to utilize and strengthen them. The power of silence. This does not mean allowing and staying in an abusive situation but walking away, hanging up the phone, not responding to texts, not having to prove anything and not letting anyone press your buttons. Going through divorce is tough. It takes time and an entire community of people to come alongside and support you. And women come out of the other side personally, sometimes professionally, spiritually, emotionally, stronger than when they started the process. Divorce is a long journey, and you need to get all the support you require. That is the intention of Women's Financial Wellness Center. We provide support and can direct you to all of the people that you would need through the divorce process - Attorneys, CPAs, therapists, etc. We'll help you find the team of people that can support you. S1 Ep 16EP16: Don't Park... Keep Moving with Nilda Campuzano

Today's episode with Nilda Campuzano is very refreshing and inspiring. We talk about the key elements in creating a thriving life weather you are contemplating divorce, going through it, or have gone through it. Nilda was a stay at home mom for 13 years before her divorce. She had a very trying time in the process - having children to consider, her family being in another country, and being away from the workforce for so long. But as she took things one step at a time, everything started coming to place. And she is now seeing the light at the end of her tunnel. I hope this episode inspires you to gain clarity, ask for support, and really advocate for yourself and for your children. Don't settle. Don't Park... Keep Moving. Here are some things we discuss: Do Not Isolate Yourself We all know the importance of staying connected and getting support. But as women are going through divorce, most feel that reaching out and opening up to people difficult and painful. Going through the process alone makes things very hard After emerging from self imposed isolation, you'll find people waiting for you You need to have the support from people who have gone through what you are going through Know Your Reasons Divorce is such a rollercoaster. You will doubt yourself, your decisions, your actions. Being extremely clear with the reasons why you came to the decision and having a visual helps ground you in times of doubt. To gain clarity, you can meditate, journal, seek counsel, start gathering financial information and get your financial house in order. Be very clear in your head and in your heart Write down all the reasons behind your decision Post it where you can see them Nilda shares her 2 biggest commitments to herself and her children and how honoring these commitments and communicating it allowed for the support of other people. Wanting to Have a "Peaceful" Process Nilda shares how she took all the responsibility and left nothing for herself because of the guilt she felt around her divorce and in wanting a "peaceful" separation. Looking back, she reflects that being a little bit angry and advocating for herself more could have done her better. Always advocate for yourself and your children Do not settle for less than you deserve Boundaries are easier to establish in the beginning, but is still achievable if set in place later "Real peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of justice." ― Andrew W. S1 Ep 15EP15: Divorce and Mental Illness with Shelly Smith, LMFT

Mental Illness is a very difficult but extremely important issue to talk about. And this is even more heightened when one is going through divorce. Shedding light on this issue is Shelly Smith, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, who talked about Mental Health & Wellness in Episode 8. In this episode, we discuss the different factors that can affect the divorce process when mental illness is involved. But the overarching theme, and the most critical, is for women to build a strong support system around her. It is important to have family, friends, and professionals help and guide you as you go through divorce. Going through divorce while dealing with mental illness is difficult, but as one of my favorite quote says… "Fortune favors the brave" You are brave! You have what it takes to navigate through this season, to advocate for yourself and your family. Listen in as Shelly and I talk about: Mental illness is rarely discussed but is more common than we realize If you suspect that you or your former spouse might be suffering from mental illness, the most important thing is to get professional help and proper diagnosis You need to set-up people, professionals, and boundaries in place to help you and protect you How and when to involve mental health counselling Reflect on your circumstances and allow healing to take place How the legal system is set up to create boundaries and deadlines, and minimize unpredictability Important things to remember: Take time to reflect on your situation. You can use a journal to help you navigate your emotions. Once you have the clarity from your reflection, reframe your mindset about the whole situation Remember that healing is a journey that takes time Having a support system is extremely important ASK. Ask for help, ask for protection, ask for guidance. S1 Ep 14EP14: Connecting Career & Confidence with Sara Reed

Going through the divorce process and what comes after can be quite challenging. Having a dependable career and confidence in advocating yourself helps a lot in bringing normalcy and stability in this time. In this episode, Sara Reed shares her in-depth knowledge from an HR standpoint on how women can elevate themselves in the workforce. We talk about tips for women who are looking to re-enter the workforce and women who are looking to increase their cash flow. As women, we should learn to have the confidence and belief in ourselves that we have valuable skills that are valuable in the workforce and that we deserve to receive proper compensation. Sara reminds us… You need to believe in you before anyone else can. Top Takeaways: For women who wants to re-enter the workforce: Look at your experiences in managing your home, volunteer work, passions, interests, and intangible qualities to build up your resume Think of people in your circle, utilize your connections, and get recommendations where you can find work rather than looking at job boards. The importance of your attitude, activity, and actions in this season Other than traditional jobs, you can also consider starting a business, network marketing, consulting, or doing temp work For women looking to increase their current income and opportunities: Evaluate your current conditions and see what direction you really want to go Why, how, and when to ask for a raise and advocate for yourself at work The importance of having financial clarity about the divorce process and after How having a real and honest conversation with your employer about your current situation can help with your productivity and benefit the company Sara Reed is the Founder of Moonstone Coaching & Consulting, helping women have a career and life they can't wait to get out of bed for. She worked in the Human Resources field for 25 years before starting her coaching practice. She believes that often, the biggest barrier to achieving what you want is you – your assumptions, your fears, your doubts. S1 Ep 13EP13: Three Keys to Successful Budgeting

Budgeting. This is a powerful word. It creates fear and anxiety. It produces avoidance-type behaviors. It even impacts relationships. What are the costs of not budgeting? There are costs to our overall well-being. 1) Health: Lack of sleep 2) Quality of life: Financial-related stress 3) Financial: Actual dollars & sense Most of my clients come to meet without a budget. There was no formal system for tracking expenses. Each spouse had a debt card – and spent money freely. What was the cost? Credit debt with high interest rates. Overdraft fees to the tune of thousands of dollars. Not saving for college as the kids approach college-age. Using the equity to pay of debt. And, then add in divorce on top of all the mayhem. Budgeting is central to all financial decisions – and yet we avoid it at all costs. Women will often ask how much can I afford for housing? How much should I save? What can I afford for insurance? Etc. Those are all certainly great questions, but I don't know the answers… until we put together a budget. Think of a target. The bulls-eye is budgeting. The next ring is insurance – risk protection. Then savings (short, mid and long-term). Then estate planning and lastly end of life planning. All of those big decisions hinge on the budget. When I was in the financial industry it was normal to give clients a template, ask them to complete it and bring it back to the next meeting. The challenge was that most people took the template, filled it out on the way to the next meeting and missed some key information. There wasn't a process to help people develop a budget. When I left the financial industry in 2014 to open The Women's Financial Wellness Center, one of the first things I did was develop an actual budgeting process. My colleagues thought I was crazy. Would people really pay for someone to help them with a budget? The answer was YES! It was one of our fastest growing programs. We offered the budgeting services as a small group workshop as well as 1:1 coaching sessions. As I tested and measured the results and launched the podcast to reach more women, I decided to create my 10-step process into an online course. It is called the Beautiful Budget Course. What are the key elements of a successful budget? 1) Awareness Mindset – family history and the impact on your budget Why you want to create a budget? What are the benefits? 2) Step-by-step process While it is tempting to start with the template – and plug in the numbers – it is important to start with mindset, strategy and planning before that. Why is your style? 3) Support Accountability Automation Who needs a budget? Women who want to be empowered to make good financial decisions. Women who are open to learning. Women who are frustrated with their current situation. Once the budget is complete, the next phase is analyzing the results. It is important to look at the information in a way that is constructive. For example, you can first say… isn't that interesting? It helps neutralize the emotion especially if you see you are in the red each month. Then ask yourself, what could I do to move from being in the red to being in the black? Start to brainstorm all the possibilities. Are there expenses you could reduce? Calls you could make to find out about special promotions? Ways you could increase your cash flow? For example, could you start a business? Or turn your hobby into a side hustle? Or ask for a raise? The Women's Financial Wellness Center can help coach you through all of these situations. To get started, I would encourage you to go through the new Beautiful Budget Online Course. Then the next step would be schedule a 1:1 strategy session for additional budgeting support. S1 Ep 4EP4: Managing your Self-Talk

There is a quote by Beverly Ingall that I want to share with you. "Turn down the volume of your negative inner voice and create a nurturing inner voice to take its place." Why is it that when we are already down in the dumps, we become our biggest critic? Why is it that when we make a mistake, instead of learning from it, we obsess over it? To help us go through a divorce, we must all be aware of our self-talk. Our biggest pep talk comes from within us. I would like to share five tips on managing self talk: Acknowledge our past relationship with money Identify the situations and topics that can create feelings of shame, guilt and anxiety Choose to begin our day with positive affirmations Extend grace to yourself Be open and intentional to the change process Listen in as I expand on these tips and help you manage your self-talk.
