How do you define faith? And what might great faith look like? One of the debated areas of biblical theology has to do with what we could call “atonement theory.” In other words, how did Jesus’ death on the cross accomplish our salvation. We humans march along a timeline of life. Birth. Middle. Death. We make plans and measure our progress along the line of life. But what if our timeline of life is a false perspective? What if life is measured not by days, months, or years or even by minutes and hours? What if our entire lifetime is really an existence beyond time? When ordered to evacuate the Philippines in the early days of World War II, General Douglas MacArthur made a promise to his troops and to the Filipino people, “I shall return.” Some two years later, MacArthur kept that promise by striding back onto Philippine soil as the victorious Supreme Commander of the forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, declaring “I have returned.” Famous returns are as old as history itself. Yet, the most significant of all returns is yet to occur—the return of Jesus Christ to this world. And, like MacArthur did for those he cared about, Jesus has assured us that, in fact, He will return some day. We live in a very different time from the time of the Bible. One of the more significant areas of difference has to do with women and the opportunities they now have. We live in a day of conflict. Over how to vote, how to parent and how to respond in a pandemic. In the early church, followers of Christ struggled with conflict as well, taking different positions on how to express and live out belief in Jesus. The Apostle Paul wrote many letters to various churches and one of his ongoing themes was unity. Doubt. One thing that every person who has lived long enough has in common is a struggle with doubt. Whether it’s questioning our calling because “How could God use me?” or prayers that have been not yet answered which can raise the question: Is God willing or able to help?” the issue of doubt is universal. What the Scriptures reveal is that the presence of faith does not necessarily mean the absence of doubt. In fact, we find examples of those who continued in the midst of their doubts. The stories of the past have been given to us to help us turn doubt on itself.
