"What's in a name?" is a famous question Juliet asked in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. And while she wasn't asking the question about the Bible, when you read the Bible, you find that names mean a lot. Great meaning is attached to both people and places. And so it should be no surprise that when it comes to God, the central figure in the Scriptures, His name—or actually His names—matters a lot. So much so, in fact, that one name can't fully represent God's power and majesty. For most Christ-followers arguably the most familiar use of the word amazing is in the hymn “Amazing Grace.” And rightly so. God’s grace is truly amazing. But recently the Discover the Word group had a series of conversations about how amazing Jesus himself was to the people who encountered him in the first century. There are so many stories we read in the Gospels where we wish we had more details. Jesus tells parables that we wish had more of an explanation. When the angel, Gabriel, informed the teenage virgin, Mary, that she would become pregnant with the Messiah, she responded with a firm “yes!” And then she offered up what Luke calls a song of praise. There is a phrase that appears continuously in the scriptures, particularly it seems to be an idea that is important to the writer of the letter to the Hebrews. And what makes this phrase interesting is that some see it as a command. I would suggest, rather, that it is an invitation—an invitation to join with the writer in walking with Jesus. The phrase? “Let us…” He is not telling his readers what they must do, but rather he is inviting them to join with him in pursuing these things together. The phrase “let us” appear thirteen times in Hebrews, and, for this series of conversations, we want to cherry-pick several of those invitations for closer consideration.
