Ep 163Reading the Gospels - How to Read Matthew
Over the course of these four weeks Bill Crowder leads the group in thinking through the four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), and explores some elements that could help our understanding of these important accounts as we read and study them. The more we comprehend the settings of these witnesses to the life and work of Jesus, the more accessible his story becomes to us. Join the Discover the Word group as they have this important discussion about how to read the Gospels so we understand--not misunderstand--the life of Jesus. Ep 162Praying Paul's Prayers - Week 2
Paul mentioned praying for the churches he's writing to in several of his letters, but in the letter to the Ephesians, he actually prays . . . twice! Both of Paul’s prayers describe something we should all long for—being filled with the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:19). During these two weeks, be part of the group as they look at what it means to be filled with the fullness of God, and how praying that for those around us can have a tremendous impact. Ep 160Being God's Image
Old Testament theologian Carmen Imes joins the group for some captivating and thought-provoking conversations that delve into the profound subject of being made in the image of God. Explore with Carmen and the Discover the Word group how the Creation narratives throughout Scripture help us understand what it means to be human, and the distinction between "bearing" vs. "being" the image of God. Do you have questions about your purpose, your identity, and your significance? Then be part of these conversations about "Being God's Image" with our guest Carmen Imes. Ep 159What's In A Name?
"What's in a name?" is a famous question Juliet asked in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. And while she wasn't asking the question about the Bible, when you read the Bible, you find that names mean a lot. Great meaning is attached to both people and places. And so it should be no surprise that when it comes to God, the central figure in the Scriptures, His name—or actually His names—matters a lot. So much so, in fact, that one name can't fully represent God's power and majesty. Join the group this week as they discover how knowing the names of God in the Bible can help us appreciate more of who God is. What's in a name? Apparently a lot. Ep 158Fruitful Living - Week 2
Do you like fruit? Why or why not? Do you have a favorite fruit? Well, growing a life that matters, is the result of God’s fruit of the Spirit growing in our lives. But just what is "the fruit of the Spirit" and how does it grow in our lives? Galatians 5 contrasts the fruit of the Spirit with the works of the flesh and then Paul explains how the fruit of the Spirit is God’s characteristics in our personality. Ep 156The Pharisees - Week 2
When you read the Gospels, the Pharisees play a prominent role. So, when you hear the word "Pharisee," what do you think of? The dictionary defines a Pharisee as "a self-righteous person; a hypocrite." But were all Pharisees self-righteous hypocrites? Did all Pharisees reject Jesus? Or is it possible that how we think about the Pharisees is more of a stereotype? Of course, there are good reasons for the stereotype, but does the stereotype ever break down? Join the group as they lean into a few passages that may shine a new light on "The Pharisees." Ep 154The Good Shepherd
The Bible uses many metaphors to teach us about God, and one of the most common of those metaphors is "shepherd." But of course, metaphors only work when you're familiar with the cultural details. Dr. Tim Laniak joins the group to take them on a fascinating journey into the world of shepherds and Biblical passages about them. Drawing on his research living with Bedouin shepherds who lead their flocks in the same regions where Abraham and David once did, Tim explores how shepherds and sheep help us understand both God and ourselves better. Ep 153Amazing Moments in Luke
For most Christ-followers arguably the most familiar use of the word amazing is in the hymn “Amazing Grace.” And rightly so. God’s grace is truly amazing. But recently the Discover the Word group had a series of conversations about how amazing Jesus himself was to the people who encountered him in the first century. We saw nine times in Mark’s gospel when people were described as “amazed” at something Jesus said or did. This week, we want to move that conversation forward, by seeing five times in Luke when a similar thing occurs—people are amazed at Jesus. Ep 151Who is God? A Study of Ephesians
Author and New Testament scholar Dr. Lynn Cohick joins the Discover the Word group for a week-long walk through the New Testament letter to the Ephesians. What were the social realities in Ephesus that led Paul to address some of the most immense theological ideas of any part of Scripture? Things like the Trinity, salvation by faith, prayer, marriage, slavery and racism? Come to a better understanding of God's redemption plan by studying Ephesians with our guest Lynn Cohick this week on Discover the Word. Small word--big concept. John the Baptist lived a life that pointed to Jesus. From the womb to the tomb, John understood and embraced his multiple roles in the mission of God including a chosen child, a unique man, a forerunner of the Messiah, baptizer, prophet, witness, attendant, questioner, martyr and then ultimately being labeled a “great one” by Jesus Himself. Ep 147The 12 Minor Prophets - Week 3
There is a section of scripture in the Old Testament that most of us rarely turn to—the Minor Prophets. These prophets have come to be known as the minor prophets, not because they are of minor importance, but because of their shorter length in contrast to the major prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel). Ep 142John 9 and 10 - Week 2
There are so many stories we read in the Gospels where we wish we had more details. Jesus tells parables that we wish had more of an explanation. Jesus often uses complicated metaphors that we wish came with more questions and answers. Basically, we often wish we had more context to understand what Jesus is driving at. Well for the next two weeks, we are going to focus on one of the stories in the Gospels that comes with soooooo many details, context, questions, responses, parables, and metaphors. It’s a fascinating story, and it’s one that I think sets us up to think differently about our lives as we think about what it means to follow Jesus today. Let’s go on a journey together to unpack this multi-scene story in John 9 and 10, and see how this might influence our understanding of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. Ep 138138. Mary's Song | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
When the angel, Gabriel, informed the teenage virgin, Mary, that she would become pregnant with the Messiah, she responded with a firm “yes!” And then she offered up what Luke calls a song of praise. Because she began her words with attributing majesty to God, her song was named “The Magnificat” in Latin. What did her melody to God mean for her in her day? Ep 137137. Hesed | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
In this series of conversations, the group goes in-depth on a word we talk about a lot on Discover the Word. It's the Hebrew word hesed. It's one of the primary ways God introduces himself to the world, and implies perhaps the biggest promise God made to people. So what does that word hesed mean? And what is the promise? Explore how hesed dominates how God is described throughout the Bible, and how that provides a lens for looking at how we see God at work in the world. Ep 136136. Amazing Moments in Mark | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
I think we can agree that we live in an amazing world filled with amazing things and people. But there are also amazing things to ponder in the spiritual realm. Most notably, when we consider the story of the scriptures we should be amazed continually. This was so front of mind for the gospel writer Mark that no less than nine times in his account of the story of Jesus, he describes the people who interacted with Jesus as being amazed. It's another study through a book of the Bible that will inform how you read the Scriptures and challenge you as you live as a follower of Christ. Ep 129129. The First Christian Sexual Revolution | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
Pastor and author Timothy Keller says the the "sexual revolution" that started in the 1960's was not the first sexual revolution. In fact, he believes it's a step back from the first, Christian sexual revolution that Jesus and his first century followers initiated. And while Christian sexual ethics might look more restrictive on the surface, he contends that they actually promote a much higher vision of what sex is and what it is for. Be part of an important week of conversations the Discover the Word group had with Tim Keller about "The First Christian Sexual Revolution." Ep 128128. Let Us... | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
There is a phrase that appears continuously in the scriptures, particularly it seems to be an idea that is important to the writer of the letter to the Hebrews. And what makes this phrase interesting is that some see it as a command. I would suggest, rather, that it is an invitation—an invitation to join with the writer in walking with Jesus. The phrase? “Let us…” He is not telling his readers what they must do, but rather he is inviting them to join with him in pursuing these things together. The phrase “let us” appear thirteen times in Hebrews, and, for this series of conversations, we want to cherry-pick several of those invitations for closer consideration. Ep 127127. The Bread of Anxious Toil | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
"Eating the bread of anxious toil." How does that make you feel? Well, the Discover the Word group goes on a journey this week, searching for the word "toil" in the Bible. They'll start at the beginning in the story of Creation in Genesis, touch down twice in the middle of the Old Testament, and then find the word "toil" in two New Testament passages. And interestingly, in following the theme of "toil" in the Bible, we discover that this idea, in a lot of ways, tells the story of the Bible, and points to some freeing and life-giving teaching of Jesus that will make the time we spend toghether this week worthwhile. Join the group at the table for this study called The Bread of Anxious Toil. Ep 117117. Lord, Teach Us to Pray | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
“Can we talk?” How do you feel when someone asks you that question? Well, this week, the Discover the Word group will use the Lord’s Prayer as a model to explore the subject of prayer in Scripture. By recognizing the difficulties inherent in cultivating a consistent prayer life, and examining the aspects of the model prayer Jesus laid out, we will encourage each other to persevere in prayer. Because it’s nice to know that when God says “Can we talk?”, it’s an invitation and not a confrontation. Ep 116116. Paul, the Letter Writer | Week 2 | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
Many Christians today imagine the apostle Paul sitting down at a desk one afternoon in a quiet room all by himself and writing a letter to one of the first-century churches he started on one of his missionary journeys. A letter we now have included in our New Testament. And when he finished writing that letter, he signed it, sealed it, and put it in the mail. That is the way we write letters, or the way our grandparents wrote them. But is that how Paul wrote his letters in the first century? Join the Discover the Word group as our friend Randy Richards joins us to show us how basically every aspect of that scenario about writing letters is wrong. In these conversations called “Paul, the Letter Writer,” we’ll discover what letter writing was like in the first century, and how that influences how we read Paul’s letter today. Ep 114114. Does Sabbath Still Matter? | Discover the Word Podcast | @Our Daily Bread
This week on Discover the Word, the group will consider the idea of Sabbath, and whether it still applies to us New Testament people who are under the New Covenant. We'll explore the intention and heart behind Sabbath, going all the way back to Creation and the first mention in Genesis chapter 2. We'll note it's inclusion in the giving of the Law. And we'll notice all the confusion Jesus seemed to create about Sabbath when He was here on Earth. And in the end, we'll consider whether or not Sabbath still applies to us today.
