Dirty Chai with Chio - Ep 42 - Life lessons from a 90 year old Part 1 of 2
“These life lessons are widely known from the highly popular column by Regina Brett. “45 lessons, written by a 90 year old” was originally featured in the Plain Dealer Newspaper in Cleveland, Ohio. Since then, it has gone on to spread the story that Regina is now 90 years old. She is really only in her ’50s, but nonetheless, this Pulitzer Prize finalist has a wealth of knowledge and life lessons that you would think she truly was in her 90’s. Ep. 36 Interdependence: The Winner's Level of the Game - Dirty Chai with Chio
We glorify independence, don’t we? We do. It’s easy. It’s because it is such a difficult thing for most of us to achieve in a world filled with co-dependence, financial considerations, and life doing what life does. Independence seems like an achievement because it is one. In particular, if we achieve independence as a result of trauma, we easily slip into hyper-independence and are applauded for it. As a result, we sometimes forget that there is a level above that. Interdependence. Interdependence in a relationship, as defined by Stephen Covey, entails the mutual reliance and cooperation between individuals. Stephen emphasizes that interdependent relationships are characterized by synergy, where the combined efforts of individuals lead to greater outcomes than what could be achieved individually. It involves recognizing and respecting the strengths and contributions of each person while working collaboratively towards shared goals. In interdependent relationships, individuals are not merely independent or dependent but rather understand the value of cooperation and synergy. Covey emphasizes that true success and fulfillment in relationships come from embracing interdependence and combining efforts with others to achieve collective success. It's about combining strengths, supporting each other, and working together toward mutual growth and fulfillment. Have you scaled to interdependence? Let’s have coffee and chat. Ep. 32 Crafting an Unforgettable Presence - The Columbus Story - Dirty Chai with Chio
Welcome to our coffee date. I have a fun question for you: What do the story about the frog in boiling water, Adam Grant's book Think Again, Yuval Noah Harari's book Sapiens, and Dr Ali Abdaal’s interview on Steve Bartlett's Podcast called Diary of a CEO have in common? They all helped me put this story and idea together. Ever wondered why America is not named after Columbus? Let me tell you how an unknown person came to have America named after them. Ep. 31 - Crafting an Unforgettable Presence - The Christopher Langan Story - Dirty Chai with Chio
Welcome to our coffee date. I met Christopher Langan for the first time in chapter 3 of Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers. As I read on I learnt that a man with an IQ 45 points higher than Einstein, who taught himself to read by 3 and fell asleep during his SATs but still scored a perfect score among many other things, wasn’t living the life I imagined. Why? Is it a lie that IQ is a cornerstone of success? This story has all the answers. We even accidentally demystified Robert Oppenheimer along the way too and I may or may not have cried once or twice (I can neither confirm nor deny :D ) —one of the most informative episodes yet in the “Crafting an Unforgettable Presence” Series. The year is ending. Let’s take a look back at 2023. The intro to the podcast references learning emotional regulation. 2023 required a lot of that from me in my career. Ep 25. Please Unsubscribe, Thanks! - Dirty Chai with Chio
Inspired and informed by Julio Vincent Gambuto’s book, “Please Unsubscribe, Thanks!” is a thesis on the macro and micro behaviour we engage in for which we usually pay a higher price than we understand because it is at the expense of something else we value more. We do it all without thinking too hard… or at all. It’s a wholesale reassessment of our values, community, friendships, workplaces, families, ourselves, and our behaviour. How does unconsciously subscribing, limit your holistic success? What’s to unsubscribe? Let’s talk about it. Start writing today. Ep. 22 How Brilliant Careers Fail - Dirty Chai with Chio
Why do some careers stall while others flourish? The careers of 50 - 60% of managers and leaders will derail to some degree during their career largely due to a blindspot. In other words, “At some point, over half of us will get fired or demoted—or our careers will flat-line, and we won’t reach our innate potential. In his book, The Right and the Wrong Stuff: How Great Careers Are Made and Unmade, Carter Cast shares with us the turning point in his career at PepsiCo. Blissfully unaware of how negative perceptions were shaped around his unconscious behaviour, he was stunned when he was called into his boss’ office, and was told that he was “unpromotable” because he was obstinate,” “resistant,” and “insubordinate.” He was also lucky enough to be told directly. Most of us never truly know why we have derailed. More often than not, people get fired, demoted, or plateau not because they lack the “right stuff,” but because they are unaware of the “wrong stuff” and its impact. Realising that many people had no idea what was in their blind spot, Carter researched the topic and his research led him to five defining derailment archetypes. These archetypes are present across all organizations, genders, and levels of seniority. I discuss these archetypes in this episode. Let’s save you from derailment. This is a public episode. Dirty Chai with Chio Ep 3 - Lessons on Being a Corporate Change Agent from the CIA
I was at brunch with 2 friends who also happen to be C Suite executives. One of them expressed her frustration at the resistance she was experiencing to an idea that would improve her organisation. "It doesn't make any sense!" My immediate answer was to tell her to research Carmen Medina. Her story of trying to bring the CIA into the modern age of the internet is an apt example of the fact that being right is not enough. You need so much more. Carmen's story of failure and eventual redemption is brimming with lessons for the modern corporate individual. The higher you rise through the ranks, the more important it is to understand that being right is 1 ingredient of a few that are each key to the success recipe. Let me tell you her story. Dirty Chai with Chio Podcast S1 Ep 1 - Introduction & Analysis Paralysis
The Maven Mail and #CareerTuesday had a holistic success podcast baby! It’s called the Dirty Chai Podcast. It's all about holistic personal and professional success. The first episode is on Analysis Paralysis and the resources, tools, and mindset required to overcome it. I talk about my own experiences and the experiences of world thought leaders. Building a corporate career anywhere is not easy and people don't talk about the nuts and bolts of their success as much as they should. Perhaps it's humility. It also means a lot of people have to figure out the same things over and over and over. I don't get that. My goal is to make sure anyone who listens to this doesn't have to reinvent the wheel in figuring it out. Knowledge and awareness are half the battle to success. Let me help you win the first half of that battle. This is a public episode. If you would like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit chioneso.substack.com
